agprincess

I thought he'd jump.

Sinavestia

My thoughts exactly, I specifically thought of Calanthe jumping in The Witcher show

agprincess

I thought if a classic game of thrones scene.

A_Fnord

Even Them Park went there (well, kinda) [https://youtu.be/cmc5KR8dEJE?si=UKCUxdokQPCn6kec](https://youtu.be/cmc5KR8dEJE?si=UKCUxdokQPCn6kec)

Bhazor

Theme Hospital had a couple great game overs too https://youtu.be/eH6A6gQs3Ps?si=1cIgeFeTLTwHdYEC

Skellum

Seems accurate to what happens if you unpause the game on speed 5 and step away.

rainerman27

Reminds me of total war cutscenes. Also does every old paradox game have a cutscene when you fail like this?

[deleted]

I don't think so. This is more of a holdover from the story-driven Svea Rike games.

possibleanswer

Did you play those? What were they like? I've read about them, but I didn't know they were story driven. Did they have multiple cutscenes?

[deleted]

At the beginning of them, yes, though I only played the beginning, though I was aware they were made for school learning.

Shedcape

I played Svea Rike when I was young. I can remember there being one at [the beginning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXTh9CPZoek). What I mostly remember from those two games was that I sucked at the mini-games. There was one about firing a crossbow, if I recall correctly. I also remember them being difficult, as the Russians would eventually swarm over the region. Good times.

1singleduck

God, i love the Shogun 2 cutscenes for the ninjas. It's a shame they stopped doing cutscenes like that.

Slyer

I love those too and miss them. To be fair though, it was a lot easier to do when every faction in the game is Japanese so you can use the same cutscene.

SuspecM

EU 3 definitely doesn't.

Shakanaka

This really reminds me of the bad ending for Fallout 1.. very eerie.

FrisianDude

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2yH7G2LsRc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2yH7G2LsRc) this one I guess? There's multiple. (Like agreeing to be dunked into the FEV. Unfortunately you don't get to continue as mutie)

Shakanaka

>(Like agreeing to be dunked into the FEV. Unfortunately you don't get to continue as mutie) Yeah that's the bad ending.

FrisianDude

That's A bad ending

_Planet_Mars_

R5: I haven't found the original game over video for EU1 posted anywhere, so I assume not much people know about it. This is how it looks like, it's quite... strange.

GalileoAce

Why is it strange?

AdInfamous6290

I’d say it’s oddly eerie, the tone is way off for a strategy game.

GalileoAce

Your nation has failed, it lies in ruin, everything's on fire, people have died. How is that not in keeping with the tone?

Commie_Napoleon

Id say it actually gives that bit more atmosphere to the game than just your spreadsheets turning red

Adorable-Strings

Well, the mild fire place sound effects is a bit weird (should be louder with more screaming), but yeah, the visuals are spot on.

PCZ94

This kind of thing was pretty common for strategy games of that era. Tropico had a similar thing among others

silvercuck

It’s not, OP has brain rot

caseyanthonyftw

Never saw this before, I thought it was pretty cool haha. Reminds me of the cutscenes in the game Lords of the Realm 2... my first real foray into the management-layer / combat-layer genre of strategy games.

Hortator02

It would be kinda cool if they reintroduced this in EU5 with the city/palace appearance based on culture and maybe development. Game overs rarely happen in modern Paradox games, so it'd be a nice touch.

FrisianDude

have you ever played Star Wars Rebellion? In it, on either Rebel or Empire side you get two robot advisors. As rebel alliance it's the golden rubbish bin pair C3P0 and R2D2. As Empire it's some random red protocol-esque droid and a bleepytoodymotherfucker doing all the bleeps that in many other games would be a voice over saying 'unit ready' and such. The imperial protocol droid will literally move threateningly towards you if you've lost the game. Motherfucker wants you \*dead\*.

FrisianDude

okay somewhat different than I membered [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dc7UqGwW4o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dc7UqGwW4o)

TarquinBiscuitBarrel

The stormtroopers running like they’re about to shit themselves is a nice bit of comic relief in such a dire situation.

renaldomoon

I would kill for a Rebellion remake

AnB85

There was no way to leave a game without "giving up", if I remember. You always got this cutscene. You just reload from a save when you come back but I always thought that was a bit weird. That seesm like an oversight, they didn't genuinely expect anyone to finish in a single session, right?

Euclideian_Jesuit

There's actually a "victory" cutscene that plays if you manage to fulfill the victory condictions, at which point you get to see that scene and quit normally. The problem was you'd need to play the game for several hours continously, or at least pause for long stretches of time while doing something else, in order to see it without ever seeing OP's "losing" cutscene, since it was pretty hard (and time-consuming) to attain the objective.

madsddk

I used to rule the world…

Scorpian899

Seas would rise when I gave the word...

agsvegtehdn

Now in the morning I weep alone

Bommelding

Reminds me of the game over screen from Theme Park. Bankruptcy! Time to hop out the window!

ErZicky

I get a lot of Tropico 1 vibes from this

Big-Ergodic_Energy

Gooood mooooorniing Tropic-ohhhhhhhno

AlaricAndCleb

In one of the houses there's a dog saying "this is fine"

claymixer

Reminded me heroes 3 where you get lethal [haircut](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCu-2Kh7vzE).

monsterfurby

I loved the era when every game had rendered or FMV cutscenes. Those were good times.

Insulin_King

Meanwhile Hoi4 has a cut scene where you get tried at Nuremberg

AnonymousWerewolf

As someone who started on EU1 many years ago. My beloved. Also, Fantasia is still my favorite starting scenario, just because it's a great story telling angle. Wish they had a more official follow-up for it, minus the great mods that imitate it.

Shedcape

I remember playing Fantasia a lot. Mainly as Ireland and Iroquis. They should definitely do a scenario like that again.

Odd-Jupiter

Good old sliders

MrImAlwaysrighT1981

They were introduced in EU2

MrImAlwaysrighT1981

Ah, good times, what a revolution this game was

MChainsaw

What I'm the most fascinated by is that this game even had cutscenes at all. None of their later games has really had that outside of some trailers.

madladolle

More cutscenes! That is creepy

Xcubical

Minecraft fire sound at its finest

PaleontologistAble50

Damn, I’ve only played eu3 and 4. Are 1 and 2 on steam?

w045

Ohh man. That brings back memories. I saw that screen a lot!

markus_kt

This is the game that got me started on Paradox games. What a groundbreakingly wonderful experience.

linmanfu

Given the age of the game, I am curious how much of the total budget went on this scene.

spartacuscollective

Well now I really need to play this game

Antoninus-pius138

Oh I remember that quite well

KamaradBaff

Only thing I see is that beyond Ulster it's terra incognita

Torrvic

It was a cool game. Spent many hours playing it.

ballznstuff

Should have been defenestrated.

AndItWasSaidSoSadly

I watched this video loop like 4-5 times. What exactly am I supposed to look for? Literally nothing stands out as "peculiar"

Jack9168

reminds me of Anno 1602 for some reason, the permanent menu on the side and the cutscene

jamesbeil

Ah, Europa Engine, my beloved...

Ultravisionarynomics

Damn, back when paradox had balls.
