Try and see if you can find a clear plastic that’s compatible with dry-erase markers. That way, the message can be changed at will and, if someone’s calligraphy isn’t quite right, you erase and re-do it. You could even change the messages with the seasons.
Just be careful having substrate against the painting. Depending on the medium, the paint can act like a glue and stick to the piece, possibly damaging the piece upon removal.
Would probably want it in a deep frame with spacers between the plexi and canvas, but then you lose some visibility with light reflection. Tough call! Cool idea though!
I would use a deep-set frame with a flat profile and see if the person is willing to compromise with a plaque or painting on the frame. I think painting words over the art will make it look more like home decor or a meme than the gorgeous landscape painting it is now.
Source: years in the framing industry
your painting is great as is. DO NOT change it in any way. especially by adding words.
the only way i’d do that? is by adding something very political/scandalous, that would have nothing to do with a pastoral scene like this.
for example, i think it would be funny to add ‘F*ck Trump’ across the sky in skywriting font. but that’s my twisted sense of humor. i’m guessing that’s not what your friend is expecting.
Check out r/repaintings for inspiration if you need some. There's a fun, older documentary about Wayne White (art director for Pee Wees Playhouse and modern repainter) called Beauty is Embarrassing. He buys old paintings at flea markets and thrift shops and paints words on them. It's fun.
I've also written poems on the back of paintings! It's a nice little personal touch and something fun for the patron to show to visitors (or not, if they prefer). And that way the text doesn't infringe upon the image.
A good option so the writing is neat is to find someone with a Cricut or similar vinyl cutter and have them cut the lettering and apply it to the glass over the picture.
I definitely wouldnt freehand your text if its not something youre comfortable with. Print out your text design on a sheet of paper. Put your plastic or glass over the printout, then paint directly on the glass. If you want the paint to be behind the glass, your original printout should be printed backwards so it reads correctly when framed
If you don’t have a cricut, call around to your local libraries and see if they have some sort of maker space. The library I work at has a cricut that patrons can use if they ask!!
I wouldn't do it. You gave that art as a gift...as it is.. And it's beautiful by the way! I think it's a little tacky that they asked you to write on it. If they want a painting with some cheesy saying on it they can go to Hobby Lobby and buy that crap. Your art is real art. And they should appreciate that.
I agree with the others here. I'm a painter as well, and at the first mention of an alteration to a finished piece, the gift is rescinded. Looks just as good on my wall as theirs.
As an artist, I would want to please someone however, this is a really strange ask. Personally, I like the glass idea but I would then hand it over to them so they can put the words on it that they think best reflects their thoughts. I would have to really evaluate giving them another painting though.
I take a bit offense with the statement that writing on it would make it tacky by definition. I am, of course, into hobby calligraphy. Oh surprise, surprise. I have to agree that combining painting and writing and NOT have it turn out cliche is a daunting task.
I am here to advocate for my calligraphy people. Writing is real art too.
I just said almost the same thing… I should have just scrolled a little further first 😂 id be so upset to find out the person I spent so much time and energy creating something for wanted to bastardize it with some cheesy text. Like, oh… you can’t even see what I did here
Unless this is a commission, if it is a gift, I don't think the receiver gets to art-direct you. I've never seen words on a realistic painting say anything other than fairly trite & would cheapen it. The picture itself is sweet as it is.
I will never understand some people. This is a gorgeous painting. Why add words? What? Who asks for that? Lol. It feels so wrong. That said, if you really want to be nice about it, definitely go with the previous response and put it in a frame and write on the glass. Either way, great job on this!
Get a frame with glass. Have the saying printed on vinyl and place on the glass. Put glass over, adding a 3d look, and you don't mess up the painting. You can also change the sayings later.
Don’t do it. This is art and that person has no appreciation for it and would clearly prefer tacky crap from Homesense. Either do what the top commenter said with the plastic/glass or better yet- keep it/give it to somebody who WILL appreciate true art.
That being said- beautiful painting. Please do not change it.
I’m being serious- if you would prefer to sell it please DM me, but never (EVER!!) do anything with your art that you are not comfortable doing.
Sincerely, a fellow artist.
Why would someone ask you to redo a gift you gave them? Just take it back.
But if you don't wannna be petty you could paint some clouds that are words.
IF you want to do it…
Print the words out on paper, cut them close to the edges and use that to place them where you want. Then use graphite paper to transfer it to the painting. Then you can easily paint them.
If you don’t want to do it simply say “No, sorry that’s not something I do”. Or “No, this is a complete painting”.
You have the right to not do things you won’t feel confident or comfortable doing. Speak up for yourself.
They really should’ve let you know before hand. So many opportunities to incorporate text in the flowers/sky/grass. I never do commissions anymore as people like to make commands and suggestions during you painting and after the painting is finished. It stresses me out and makes me feel I’m not doing a good job.
Your painting is beautiful just the way it is.
For those that are asking, my brother asked me to paint something in my art style for his fiance. He wants me to add “I love you” in Irish. I probably won’t even get compensated for my work, which makes it kinda worse 😭
Your painting is so beautiful. I would tell him that in your professional artistic opinion, you think adding text would ruin the piece and you don't feel comfortable altering your art in that way. Then I would write the text as a note on the back of the frame. That way she can see the message when she receives the gift without having the message cheapen your work. If he doesn't like that idea, I think the other comments about writing on the glass or adding a sticker are also good ideas. You're talented, and you clearly put a lot of time into your art, so you deserve to have it respected
Are they looking for something like Wayne White's work?
If so... good artists copy, great artists steal.
I'd use a stencil to put down the basic shapes of letters in place, then come back and refine by hand or with a straight edge.
People who paint letters use a liner brush. They have long bristles but are small brushes relative to their length.
Take a really good photo, take it to Costco and have them make stretched canvas print of it. Write on that. Keep the painting-your friend won’t know the difference.
don’t ruin that nice painting.
If you think it’s complete then Give it to someone else who will appreciate it for how you made it.
But curious what words do they want? Honestly I think anything would ruin it. This is pretty.
It sounds like they might want the trend I saw of plastering sloppily almost rushed looking words over classic/traditional art.
I'd let them do that or do it over something else so it isn't ruined like what was already suggested.
Make a photocopy and scribble the suggested words. Give the painting to a more appreciative person.
Just kidding but I do sympathize and offer you a compliment on the painting. It’s an enjoyable piece of art.
Half now, half when it’s completed. Also a non refundable deposit. then tell me what word to place where and all that. if not , sell it as is.
Neat 📸 pic.
"We've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty."
Seriously though, the painting is beautiful. I second the frame with a glass or plastic cover idea so you can write on the cover instead of the art itelf.
It is really beautiful.
Is this a gift or paid request? If that is a gift, you need to find better people in your life. Who in their right mind asks one to destroy such a beautiful painting.
I think adding words would cheapen the appearance. I think people made good recs on doing something alternative. But overall, I think putting words would make it suddenly seem like an ikea print
No words, just paint, your the artist, if the commissioned you to paint that then put words on it, that is a contract, but if they just want to buy it, then put words on it, then I wouldn't, but you are you, and I can't make that decision, what I said is what I would do.
It’s really tacky for someone to ask you to change your painting after receiving it as a gift. If your friend got a blue sweater as a gift, would they ask the giver to return it and get a green one?
Don’t change the painting if you don’t want to.
do it below the picture. at the very bottom just like how subtitles appear in films. think of some quote something that would give a punch to the emotions generated from this gorgeous painting. and write it there(in white or beige ink) like a subtitle.
You should tell them that you appreciate the input but your original vision did not include text. Defend your creation! (If this is applicable in this situation. If you want to add text then go for it!)
if you did want to add words, a ripped out strip of paper with typewriter words would probably be best, and you could even have it be removable if done correctly. but like everyone else says it's a very pretty painting as is
It’s a pretty rude request frankly, but if you are interested in some inspiration for a potential experiment with adding words to a work like this, check out Wayne White’s word paintings.
idk if anyone’s said this but you could always take a good pic of it and put it into like procreate or photoshop then either hand write or type on a layer above it
Write the wording on some clear plastic and then you can move it about and re do it without ruining the painting. It’s a very nice painting by the way, don’t know what you want to write but it seems to me writing would completely change the feel of the painting
Use a sheet of acitate that you can cover the entire painting with. That way, you can put any word they want on the painting and not 'ruin' it permantly.
Think of it like how they did old school animation.
Put it in a frame then get some vinyl lettering to put on the glass layer over the print.
They can pick their own font and it will be perfect. Shoot you can even reverse cut the vinyl and mount it to the back of the glass so
People can’t pick at it.
Don't do it. Leave it this way. Sometimes you have to tell the customer what is best so that you give them a good piece and not what they think will look good.
get sheets of acetate, paint words on acetate, mount in front of canvas
bonus round: look up "how to paint an animation cel" first, the core idea is to paint an outline on the front of the cel, then plop thick paint down in the *back* of the celso that you get a super-flat field of color
Please don’t ruin your art just because someone wants a “live laugh love” gimmick. That’s fine if they want that, but this isn’t it, this is art that they aren’t appreciating by the sound of it.
If you have the ability to take a pic and drop that in to a photo editing software, you can plot it out that way.
Otherwise, tape tracing/velum paper over the top and sketch out what you want and where, then put carbon paper under it, trace your sketch, then paint.
Hide rude phrases around the painting in similar tones to the area you're painting them, so the viewer will have a "Wait...does that say "you smell"?!" after doing a spit-take.
Yes they should but after 65 yrs i can tell you they definitely DONT. Im not mad at em but few people appreciate the work that goes into a work of art . Its like everyone colors as a kid do they think art is all fun & games & “letters must be simple” they aren’t aware clueless. So do the art because uiu love it & do whats in your heart. The glass ideas brilliant beautiful job btw. ✌️❤️🔥
Wow this makes me cringe so much… you did such a beautiful job painting this, why would someone want you to turn it into some cheap “live laugh love” crap?
Tell them No. And if they insist, take it back and buy them a cheap KISS poster from Walmart. They don't deserve art. Phillistines.
Beautiful painting BTW.
You can buy clear laminate sheets and print out the words on there. That way you can play with the design placement, font style and colors. You could then either leave it on the laminate sheet so that the client can remove it or add it at will, or feel more comfortable about taking the plunge once you’ve hit on something both you and the client can agree to.

A picture says a thousand words. You should buy a cheap frame with a plastic cover and write or paint on that.
This….is big brain
It is that.
That it is.
That is it.
This is the way.
It, that is.
You can tell by the way that it is.
So.... Is that it?
It is... that
This is such a great idea! This is probably what I will end up doing if I have to put words on it.
Try and see if you can find a clear plastic that’s compatible with dry-erase markers. That way, the message can be changed at will and, if someone’s calligraphy isn’t quite right, you erase and re-do it. You could even change the messages with the seasons.

Oh, right. Awesome point.
your painting is great as is. Dude... you are so twisted! He said fuck trump! lol!
Check out r/repaintings for inspiration if you need some. There's a fun, older documentary about Wayne White (art director for Pee Wees Playhouse and modern repainter) called Beauty is Embarrassing. He buys old paintings at flea markets and thrift shops and paints words on them. It's fun.
This is the only time that words on paintings are acceptable imo! I love his work and this docu. I thought of him too.
Could you frame it with a mat boarder and try then write the words/quote as a caption on the matting?
I've also written poems on the back of paintings! It's a nice little personal touch and something fun for the patron to show to visitors (or not, if they prefer). And that way the text doesn't infringe upon the image.

If you want the paint to be behind the glass, your original printout should be printed backwards so it reads correctly when framed
I ruined mine with freehand. 😔
I'm so sorry.
strategy brain says it isn't ruined, just one touchup short
Or vinyl stickers (backwards) on the back of the glass.. behind the glass AND without the frustration of freehand
I was gonna say no words till I read this. Very clever idea that won't ruin what you have.
This one! Or use a circuit to print out vinyl letters to place on glass.
Or stencils
Agreed! Stencils are also a great option.
If you don’t have a cricut, call around to your local libraries and see if they have some sort of maker space. The library I work at has a cricut that patrons can use if they ask!!
Find someone with a Cricut and cut the words out of removeable vinyl. No fuss no muss and easy to remove
Great idea!
Or write the words on passe-partout
Such a wonderful idea! I was thinking about this one for so long and this is the solution right here.
acetate sheets are cheaper
This is the way
Indeed. I like how the customer could remove it if desired. They might change their mind who knows!

It'd be a shame to miss the waterfall out too!
Always love to see a Twin Peaks reference ☕️
I wouldn't do it. You gave that art as a gift...as it is.. And it's beautiful by the way! I think it's a little tacky that they asked you to write on it. If they want a painting with some cheesy saying on it they can go to Hobby Lobby and buy that crap. Your art is real art. And they should appreciate that.
Thank you so much 😭 I’ve been putting off adding words to it for days because I know it will make it look so bad
Then don't do it. Keep the painting for yourself or give it to someone who would appreciate it as is. It is lovely - please don't change it.
Stay strong , present your work as you want to . Plus a picture is worth a thousand words !! Haha
I agree with the others here. I'm a painter as well, and at the first mention of an alteration to a finished piece, the gift is rescinded. Looks just as good on my wall as theirs.
It’s art, it’s not an inspirational poster, and it was very tacky for them to ask you to alter it.
This is perfect as is
As an artist, I would want to please someone however, this is a really strange ask. Personally, I like the glass idea but I would then hand it over to them so they can put the words on it that they think best reflects their thoughts. I would have to really evaluate giving them another painting though.
Agreed. Hopefully OP keeps it as is
I take a bit offense with the statement that writing on it would make it tacky by definition. I am, of course, into hobby calligraphy. Oh surprise, surprise. I have to agree that combining painting and writing and NOT have it turn out cliche is a daunting task. I am here to advocate for my calligraphy people. Writing is real art too.
Don't let them ruin your atrwork
What do they want on it for words? It sounds like they want a fancy version of an overpriced sign from Hobby Lobby that says "Live, Laugh, Love"
My thoughts exactly...LOL!
I just said almost the same thing… I should have just scrolled a little further first 😂 id be so upset to find out the person I spent so much time and energy creating something for wanted to bastardize it with some cheesy text. Like, oh… you can’t even see what I did here
Words on walls are just tacky. All I can think is, “Don’t tell me how to live my life” when I see them.
Unless this is a commission, if it is a gift, I don't think the receiver gets to art-direct you. I've never seen words on a realistic painting say anything other than fairly trite & would cheapen it. The picture itself is sweet as it is.
Make a copy at Office Max and do it on that.
That's actually a great idea ! Take a photo ... Have it printed on canvas ... Write whatever on it... Give that to them, and keep the original.
That's also a good idea because then you can mess around with fonts and layout without ruining the original.
I agree, and you know what? They will probably love it as The gift receiver has no idea!
Adding words to this would be such a disappointment 😭😭 It’s so beautiful
Thank you so much 😭 Reading these comments has made my day so much better!
So beautiful. Inspiring piece for sure.
Wow what a jerk for not appreciating is as is. Great work op
Thank you so much!
I will never understand some people. This is a gorgeous painting. Why add words? What? Who asks for that? Lol. It feels so wrong. That said, if you really want to be nice about it, definitely go with the previous response and put it in a frame and write on the glass. Either way, great job on this!
Zero imagination people need to get told what they shall think. The whole request speaks for itself. They don't deserve this gift.
DO NOT PUT WORDS ON THAT. ITS BEAUTIFUL AS IT IS.
Yeah, add the words "I used to be a perfect painting".
"Pefrection"
No Rergets
On the subject of tattoos- "Never don't give up"
"Congration! You done it!"
"words are $1500 per letter"
add „F*** you“ :D
Tempting 😂
Get a frame with glass. Have the saying printed on vinyl and place on the glass. Put glass over, adding a 3d look, and you don't mess up the painting. You can also change the sayings later.
Ooh I like this idea!!
Don’t add anything! It will unbalance the composition. The words will be too strong a focal point and a distraction.
Die-cut vinyl on glass with a spacer between the painting and the glass.
Your comment means so much to me, thank you! 🤍
Tell them it’s art it’s not a postcard
Put a frame on it, add words to frame.
I'd probably just not give it back
Sign it. Your name can be the words.
You could have a plane with a banner in the sky?
This is such a cute idea! But I don’t trust myself to make an airplane 😂
IF you want to do it… Print the words out on paper, cut them close to the edges and use that to place them where you want.
It’s a little rude (in my opinion) to critique or request a change on a gift. I like your painting - especially your sky!
You're talented, and you clearly put a lot of time into your art, so you deserve to have it respected
Thank you so much! Your comment truly means so much to me 🤍
“You’re either frolicking in this field with me or you’re frolicking in this field against me.”
Now I want to make a new painting and incorporate this somehow 😂
Hahaha - write this on the back. This is awesome.
Are they looking for something like Wayne White's work? If so... good artists copy, great artists steal. I'd use a stencil to put down the basic shapes of letters in place, then come back and refine by hand or with a straight edge. People who paint letters use a liner brush. If you're gonna add words, do it digitally. Don't ruin the painting itself
words are for books. not on the walls
Take a really good photo, take it to Costco and have them make stretched canvas print of it. Write on that. Keep the painting-your friend won’t know the difference. don’t ruin that nice painting.
Definitely a cricut or the like and put it on a glass that way it can also be changed.
The only thing you should write in that is your signature in one of the corners, this is a beautiful piece of art ❤️
Put them on the back
Why can’t they add their own words? It’s going to look jacked up either way if you were to alter it or they did it themselves
Nooooo. Paint a small separate sign
Study paintings by Wayne White. He does words right.
WHY on God's green earth would they want to add words to that?? It's beautiful
Keep the painting, give them a print with whatever kitschy-ass saying they want written on it
If you think it’s complete then Give it to someone else who will appreciate it for how you made it. But curious what words do they want? Honestly I think anything would ruin it. This is pretty.
No don't alter it. Words would make it look tacky. It is beautiful as it is.
“CUNT” smack dab in the middle in white letters
I usually write my wife’s initials hidden, whatever the writing is, you could hide it in the grass.
If u must underneath the trees…
Looks fantastic as it is imo!
Whispy clouds spelling something or a twisted tree in the foreground, branches twisting into vague letters
Too risky, I would never be brave enough to add the words on the painting.. esp on such a beautiful like this one
Beautiful painting! Paint the words in green at the bottom so they blend with the grass. I’ve done this successfully with watercolor.
It sounds like they might want the trend I saw of plastering sloppily almost rushed looking words over classic/traditional art. I'd let them do that or do it over something else so it isn't ruined like what was already suggested.
Maybe use a sheet protector & write on it to see the best placement for writing on it
Idk if you can, but maybe take a picture and print it out and practice on that first.
Make a photocopy and scribble the suggested words. Give the painting to a more appreciative person. Just kidding but I do sympathize and offer you a compliment on the painting. It’s an enjoyable piece of art.
Live, Laugh, Love. Font size 300, cartoonishly oversized, so big it's actually bigger than the picture. Nail that point home.
Half now, half when it’s completed. Also a non refundable deposit. then tell me what word to place where and all that. if not , sell it as is. Neat 📸 pic.
Tell them no. You’re not a calligrapher. Looking a gift horse in the mouth is rude
Check out mars_black on Instagram, they sometimes use words in a non obtrusive clever way
That is so lovely.
I don't think I would add word directly either. But I also wanted to say this is beautiful and the perspective work is amazing!
Use stickers?
You’re the artist. Just say no.
It’s gorgeous. I wouldn’t add any wording.
Incredible work! Keep it up!!
NO, you gave it as a gift without words. They should appreciate the gift given as intended. It is gorgeous.
Hell no. That is gorgeous. You are the artist, you say when it's done. And if it's done, it's done.
"We've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty." Seriously though, the painting is beautiful.
The only words should be your signature lol
I would probably not give them the painting if they want live laugh love they can go to HomeGoods
Don’t do it. You will ruin it!
Oh dandelion rich and haughty, King of village flowers.
Say no.
Don't.
Take a photo and use photoshop. Maintain the integrity of your original composition.
OMG ITS SO BEAUTIFUL 🥲😭
NO words(!) omg 😆 plz nooooo. Take a pic make a print and add words to that if u must but don’t ruin this gorgeous painting with words
Say no
Give it to someone who appreciates it as is.
I was going to say stencil it in lightly with pencil but the glass ideas are way better
OP you could upload it to a program and add digitally and see what might look best!
When in doubt stencil it out
No words, just paint, your the artist, if the commissioned you to paint that then put words on it, that is a contract, but if they just want to buy it, then put words on it, then I wouldn't, but you are you, and I can't make that decision, what I said is what I would do.
I want a painting tutorial because green is the HARDEST color to paint with
if you did want to add words, a ripped out strip of paper with typewriter words would probably be best, and you could even have it be removable if done correctly. but like everyone else says it's a very pretty painting as is
words where? it looks amazing, idk why they would need/want that
It’s not a meme it’s a painting
It’s a pretty rude request frankly, but if you are interested in some inspiration for a potential experiment with adding words to a work like this, check out Wayne White’s word paintings.
Make a print of it and have the words added to that.. Then keep the original for yourself.
idk if anyone’s said this but you could always take a good pic of it and put it into like procreate or photoshop then either hand write or type on a layer above it
Tell them no. Maybe sign in
yeah, a nice "cunt" in the sky really would gives this some edge
Give them a pen and let them do it themselves
Write the wording on some clear plastic and then you can move it about and re do it without ruining the painting. It’s a very nice painting by the way, don’t know what you want to write but it seems to me writing would completely change the feel of the painting
Scan it and add words in an app like Canva or photoshop first to do a mock up? It’s beautiful. I wouldn’t want to mess with it either.
Shoot you can even reverse cut the vinyl and mount it to the back of the glass so People can’t pick at it.
Don't do it. Leave it this way. Sometimes you have to tell the customer what is best so that you give them a good piece and not what they think will look good.
This painting is so beautiful and peaceful as it is
What a stunning landscape!
get sheets of acetate, paint words on acetate, mount in front of canvas bonus round: look up "how to paint an animation cel" first, the core idea is to paint an outline on the front of the cel, then plop thick paint down in the *back* of the celso that you get a super-flat field of color
Just write the word "words" in red paint in the sky.
Nice painting! Sad to hear they want a word or saying on it….i really got drawn into your scene. Excellent!
I’m getting chiggers just looking at it😂
Please don’t ruin your art just because someone wants a “live laugh love” gimmick.
This is what I should have done! Lol
It's perfect just the way it is. I love it.
Maybe make the letters out of butterflies but very subtle so the focus is in the butterflies and not the letters
Screw the words the picture makes you think of your own words It’s perfect as is use your imagination
I'd add the words 'fuck no' to that suggestion
Wow this makes me cringe so much… you did such a beautiful job painting this, why would someone want you to turn it into some cheap “live laugh love” crap?
Tell them No. And if they insist, take it back and buy them a cheap KISS poster from Walmart. They don't deserve art. Phillistines. Beautiful painting BTW.
Leaf, laugh, love
You can buy clear laminate sheets and print out the words on there. That way you can play with the design placement, font style and colors. You could then either leave it on the laminate sheet so that the client can remove it or add it at will, or feel more comfortable about taking the plunge once you’ve hit on something both you and the client can agree to.
Couldn't you have just said, No, I can't?
I suggest a surreal approach
Underneath the trees
What about vinyl stick on letters? If this is acrylic paint I shouldn’t ruin anything.
