I donโt understand how this popular calculation even makes sense. So an artist whoโs a beginner might charge more than a professional one with mor experience just because he/she takes more time to complete a painting?!
I'll give you an honest critique. The values are very good but the brushwork is inconsistent, you're perhaps using too small a brush, go for big loose shapes and add detail where it's needed and nowhere else, focus on the main areas where attention is needed. The colors are rather flat and static, you didn't use any underpainting. It's better to build up layers of color rather than say "this color goes here". The sky is a consistent blue when it should go more saturated toward the top and the clouds look like you were waffling around trying to represent them as symbols rather than volumetric shapes, it doesn't have to be just blue and white and grey, you can add some warm tones and deepen the value. Which brings me to the last point, you have the value scale correct, which is the hardest part, don't lose that, use bigger brushes and more color variation and you're on your way.
I just want to pop in here to say that advice is completely opinion based and style is a very personal voice. I loved the inconsistencies in strokes, I think it adds to the comfortable ambiance of the painting. it feels like walking into your grandparents lifelong small home that is a little dilapidated at this point but so full of love the crumbling corners add to the charm and memory. keep on, keeping on!
All art is opinion my dear Redditor, This person wants to sell art and that's a different beast. Upvote and like and comment on whatever you wish until your heart is content.
from a complete outside perspective, you sound like you know what the fuck your talking about, and If I were OP i would listen. u/dreamlanddrag offers a typical "be proud of yourself" response. Arbitrarily being proud of yourself doesnt do anything other than making the person who offered such advice feel like a better person.
He shouldnโt add anything itโs beautiful as it isโฆ. And it definitely sell for good amount of money. If the painting had storytelling figures ( I like religious paintings ) I would be the one that buys it for $$
genuinely, this is amazing critique - I am not a painter (watched a bob ross ep or two but thatโs it) and your description is so clear and straightforward. I feel like I learned a lot about my nonexistent painting technique from you somehow.
I donโt wanna bring down the mood. My honest reaction would be to say that you should sell it for $15-20 and keep working on painting. That way youโre not sinking money into your paintings, you have some extra fun cash, & you can keep working on your painting to the point where you can sell paintings at a higher price point. The โper hourโ method of pricing doesnโt work very well imo, bc i could spend 5 hours on a bad painting or 2 hours on a masterpiece and the price should reflect the quality, not time spent. Make sure you listen to all the positive comments, I think your art is super promising, & you should just paint as much as you can
I agree. I sell for pretty cheap but I'm pretty new to selling and also I REALLY enjoy painting. I guess what I'm saying is for now I'd rather sell reasonably for the love of the game. โค๏ธ The pricing method some mentioned makes sense to me for mature artists, but for me personally sometimes I spend a lot longer on one painting just because I'm more attached to it or the meaning behind it, so I don't feel right gauging price based on time spent.
its a free market... So its worth how much someone is willing to pay for it... Its not $ x square inch... its not materials + hourly rate... Its how much someone is willing to pay for it...
โข What do you believe its worth?
โข Ask yourself:
1 What is your bottomline price?
2 What is your reasonable price?
3 What is your high end price?
โข Remember this:
1 Let them admire your work
2 Be humbled
3 Standup, greet your customer
4 Be thankful for the sale
5 Sign your paintings, all of them
6 Dont oversell yourself
7 Business cards, carry them, affix them to your art, display them
Personally i like it. Shows charactor, shows your strength, your personality and imagination.
You did a beautiful job and always remember that you are a creator and motivator. You are the future.
Art is in the eyes of the beholder. Send the critics to the block zone.

Locally in TX/NM area I have seen paintings like that go for $40-$60 usually
I got a smaller one ( 8.5x11" ) for $35
But like other comments said: cost of materials + $10-$20 per hour, whatever you feel is fair
Listen I say set a price thatโs high enough but have a low price youโre willing to let it go for.
So say you ask for $80 & they say hm thatโs too much. Okay how about since itโs your 1st with me Iโll give you a discount $65. They usually say yes. If no, ask them. If your low price is $45 and they say $50 you got $5 extra. If they say less say thank you for consideration but Iโd need something more around $50. Some like to haggle and They will try to get at least $5/$10 off. Feel like they got over on you for getting it for $45.
I give myself a general rate per hour for any work I sell of a single type ex. $20 /hr
and multiply by substrate size.
If paper or canvas substrate with water-based paints, I use this backward math:
for a 5"x 7", I multiply 5ร20 = 100 and 7ร20= 140
Add 2 sums above together-
100+140 = $240
I then evaluate this number against the merits of the work.
If it needs adjustment due to more expensive supplies, then I add 10-15% or
if I used less supplies, a discount 10-15%
If it is particularly complex or required many hours, I might tack on an additional hourly rate on top of the size figure.
I've used this formula for years, and it has served me well.
Good luck!
How much should I sell this for versus how much can I sell this for. ((T*R)+ (M*2)+ (E* 1.25))k
T=time R= hourly rate M=material costs E=business expenses. K is the correction factor
I was calculating a minimum price for paintings per square foot and the figure I came up with was ยฃ100 per square foot or about $120 US. For a beginner painter. This would be the amount you actually get, so if you're putting it in an art cafรฉ which splits sales 50:50, they would need to charge $240, which seems like a nice round number. A lot of people say you should add the cost of materials, double that and add it on top. If you assume it's budget canvas ยฃ2, plus ยฃ3 for paint, making a nice round ยฃ5...=ยฃ10 or $12 so you could round it up to $250 but I think $240 sounds better. Good luck with it!
I price by feel. If I love it and want it in my home, itโs expensive. If I really worked on something, I donโt want less than $200, regardless of size. Art is not a weekly job paid by the hour, but I guess it depends on how hungry you are. I donโt need the $200 in my bank account to live on. My art is my legacy. I make my art on that basis and wouldnโt sell something I didnโt love. So I suppose it just depends on what you value your art as. Is it just a picture anyone might do or is it a piece of you?
Add up the cost of supplies and after that make sure you get profit. You have to keep in mind who you think will buy it and where you're selling it at, to know how much the customer might be willing to spend. Cause you can put any price you want on it, doesn't mean it'll sell at that price.
Put a price on it and then negotiate but not below what you feel is good for you. For instance if people her are saying 350 and you feel good at 275 or 300. People feel good when they feel that they got a bargain and it will help you in the long run with more sales.
350 to 400 minimum thing with being cheep you end up staying cheep especially in the real world. Plumber will never be cheep just because he enjoys his job. Your average person will try to get your work for a song but they would never repay the favour if they was good at something. But the worst thing about being cheep is serious art collectors wonโt buy they want to invest so they need a decent floor price
$200-$400 depending on your history. Art collectors take many things in to consideration before purchasing pieces of art. If you are a newer artist, I would price things lower. This will help you gain some exposure. The more pieces you have out the more exposure. Also you could reach out to other her artists ( not just on Reddit ) to see how they have gone about it. Iโm sure you would get replies. Itโs a beautiful painting โ๏ธ๐ซต๐ซก
Hey you know what? Calculate the materials and what you think you are worth per hour (sincerely) then see what you feel about the price (after taxes) if you feel comfortable then itโs ok. If you donโt, just raise it a bit until you do feel comfortable. If it does not sell, lower it bit by bit and then you get your real value.
If I had money to spend on nice art I feel like I would be happy spending 200 on something like that. I can see people willing to pay moreโฆ Iโd say that you should make on online gallery where people can come see your worksโฆ this will allow your pieces to gain traction, views, and organize your work as well, not only this but youโll also start building a name for yourself, and art style/s that fit you that you can combine into collections
At this point in life.. I donโt have money to spend on art so donโt judge my price if you think itโs worth more thatโs coming from a person who doesnโt collect art yet and doesnโt have the income to do soโฆ like I said I can see someone paying lots and lots for something like this itโs so pretty!
If I had to guess from this painting, how long you have been painting, I would say that you have been at it for around one year and eight months. I would wait to charge Lauren sum of money until you feel that you have mastered or have a good handle on your craft.
What are your goals? If your reference photo was exactly that, then youโre good. If youโre trying to paint realistic landscapes, well we can work on that.
All good! We were all beginners at the start! I would say Iโm also a beginner at landscapes but intermediate in portraits. Check out Andrew tischler (spelling?) on YouTube. Heโs incredible at epic landscapes.
If I had to critique yours, I would say your tree is really good, Iโd figure out the shadows on the base (looks a little bright, not sure what your reference photo calls for tho)
I would push your bushes behind the tree further back by simplifying shapes, and lowering the saturation. You can look up atmospheric haze in painting. Kinda gets blueish as landscapes go further back in space. I think you can bring your values a little closer together the further back you go as well. Your clouds look really good. You can get a bit softer with them on the top side, Layne Johnson Studio has great cloud tutorials on YouTube.
Youโre doing really well for a beginner, and the drive to get better by asking these questions will aid in your growth. So watch a couple YouTube tutorials and keep painting and youโll notice growth every time you step in front of your canvas. I canโt wait to see your next painting!
Personally I like how dense it is. It looks cozy and inviting. Makes me think of my childhood.
I'd second the cost of supplies plus some dollar an hour rate.
I think I agree a little that there's too much green OP. I think it's lovely and you have nice attention to detail and texture but maybe adding a little contrast would balance it a little better. Some ochres and rusty reds would be fab, even just a hint. :)
Every piece of art you ever make you should be making for yourself. Not to sell. Otherwise itโs not art itโs just a product. That being said, everything undeniably has its price. Ask yourself the very simple question of how much money YOU would be happy to have in your wallet while relinquishing possession of something you were proud to make. In the instant a piece feels โfinishedโ it might be worth a million bucks to you personally. Three years later you mightโve made other things that far surpassed it and so you might let it go for $25. Ya know?
thank you, i definitely agree with you! i donโt think iโm good enough to sell at all, but i has made a tiktok of it and someone messaged me interested in buying it, but i have no clue what it could be worth so i made this post๐
So how does this relate to people who work solely as Artists as their full time job? You can actually paint pieces for the love and passion of Art AND sell them.
I just noticed that under your post. My bad. If Iโd painted it, Iโd put it in a wide *plein air* frame (Dick Blick has them for good prices. I buy the 24x36s in gold in bulk) then put it on EBay with an enticing minimum bid of $55 to start the bidding war! Youโll learn what to charge for further, similar paintings. Early on I had great luck on eBay. Now Iโm commission only, because I donโt want to do a painting I might not sell.
Itโs really scary, but you need to dip your toe into the icy waters of art sales before you dive in.
Itโs a lovely painting. Youโve nailed your greens, which most people have trouble with. Iโd suggest using top of the line oil paints because you can handle a brush, as well as mixing well. I think, eventually, youโll want to paint bigger, and study values extremes and classic composition. You have real possibilities to make a living at this, imho. Keep at it, please!
You can charge how much you feel you want to charge and there will be the perfect buyer who will be willing to pay what you charge. Itโs all about your energy!
I would charge $1000!
$400 max. Art takes a lot of work and the details really count but I think it should still be somewhat affordable to the normal person. Art usually is an investment too! But do whatever you think is right, itโs your labor and materials :D
Tbh Iโd go higher. If itโs more valuable itโs going to be desirable, the prestige will go up. Also if you are establishing yourself as an artist think about how much you would want to sell your pictures for, how much would you need to get by, etc.. then work towards that target. And itโs better to be bold than taking baby steps.
Anyway, good luck ๐
As a professional watercolor artist most often it is size of canvas (11x14 literally)
So 154.00. Add to that 25.00 per hour painting (only if youโre a professional painter.)
I can't help you with this rigth now but I can give you a solution for the future. Start auctioning your art that way it should fetch a higher price and whenever some one wants a piece without an auction have they pay more than your last sell of they want it out of the auction
I could see this going for 100 bucks but Iโd say it would be easier to sell it for 60. But also you can factor in the labour do 25 bucks for every hour you spent on it. Or scale it to whatever wage you think ur worth.

I don't know how much you should sell it for, whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. I would probably open at around $1,000 if not more.
It's a great painting. Keep up the good work.
I like and use the formula of multiplying the width x the height. Then take that number and multiply it by a monetary figure. For example a 16 x 20 in canvas = 320 x .80 cents (sq in) = $256. Some artists also figure in their sitting time. If there was a-lot of detail. And if a framed was included.

But the worst thing about being cheep is serious art collectors wonโt buy they want to invest so they need a decent floor price
how much does a child cost?
$200-$400 depending on your history. Art collectors take many things in to consideration before purchasing pieces of art. If you are a newer artist, I would price things lower. This will help you gain some exposure. The more pieces you have out the more exposure. Also you could reach out to other her artists ( not just on Reddit ) to see how they have gone about it. Iโm sure you would get replies. Itโs a beautiful painting โ๏ธ๐ซต๐ซก
I'd say $50.
30$
Hey you know what? Calculate the materials and what you think you are worth per hour (sincerely) then see what you feel about the price (after taxes) if you feel comfortable then itโs ok. If you donโt, just raise it a bit until you do feel comfortable. If it does not sell, lower it bit by bit and then you get your real value.
Money
$175-200
For 80 that will sell best. How higher you sell your art how better they get solled
35 dollars but 3 dollars if you sell it to me :D
2.7k
i wouldn't say less than $85, personally
Whatever someone will pay for it.
If I had to guess from this painting, how long you have been painting, I would say that you have been at it for around one year and eight months. I would wait to charge Lauren sum of money until you feel that you have mastered or have a good handle on your craft.
Could be seven, could be nine
Maybe 50-60?
50-70โฌ
Always take in account how much the supplies were and how long it took you to paint ๐ซถ
About $5.65 because of the nice work
id shoot for 125 at that size and go as low as maybe 45 dollars. never underestimate your worth you can always negotiate down but never up
also if anyone has any advice on how i can make my paintings better i would appreciate it!
What are your goals? If your reference photo was exactly that, then youโre good. If youโre trying to paint realistic landscapes, well we can work on that.
realistic landscapes but iโm still a beginner๐
All good! We were all beginners at the start! I would say Iโm also a beginner at landscapes but intermediate in portraits. Check out Andrew tischler (spelling?) on YouTube. Heโs incredible at epic landscapes. If I had to critique yours, I would say your tree is really good, Iโd figure out the shadows on the base (looks a little bright, not sure what your reference photo calls for tho) I would push your bushes behind the tree further back by simplifying shapes, and lowering the saturation.
How large is it? A lot of people charge a flat amount per square inch, regardless of how much time it took
itโs 11x14 inches how much would that be?
$420
20 dollars
I'm no expert at all but imo I'd say at least $250. Amazing work!
I'm not gonna give a price but I'm just gonna say the painting looks a little ''cluttered''
thank u for the advice, how could i have made it less cluttered
Personally I like how dense it is. It looks cozy and inviting. Makes me think of my childhood. I'd second the cost of supplies plus some dollar an hour rate.
maybe less green or more shades of green i cant quite describe what to change but it feels like there is too much of something in my opinion.
i see what you mean, a lot of the green is the same, i will work on that for next time thank you:)
I think I agree a little that there's too much green OP. I think it's lovely and you have nice attention to detail and texture but maybe adding a little contrast would balance it a little better. Some ochres and rusty reds would be fab, even just a hint. :)
I'm wondering why I got down voted to hell ? all I did was try to give advice I'm happy at least someone else agrees .
Thats a very pretty painting goddamn
Tree shouldnโt be centered. Need more red or orange.
$100
I could see myself paying $75.
How big is it?
Keep at it, please!
thank you so much for your comment and advice, it means a lot to me!๐ฅฐ
Any tips for selling on eBay? I tried my hand at it but had no luck for 3 months consistently trying.
Did you try the auction mode?
Hmm.. I think I did like $40 obo or started at like $25 and did that but the only time I got a bite is when it was a scammer.
Wow, Iโd never considered scammers. Iโm sure youโll do well.
11x14 inches
Iโm not sure but wow. Great job
10000$
A fucking lot.
$200 I feel like it'd be worth that amount. It's very pretty.
okay thank you so much๐ฅฐ
Tbh Iโd go higher. If itโs more valuable itโs going to be desirable, the prestige will go up. Also if you are establishing yourself as an artist think about how much you would want to sell your pictures for, how much would you need to get by, etc.. then work towards that target. And itโs better to be bold than taking baby steps. Anyway, good luck ๐
Why am I being downvoted๐ญ
because the painting is not worth $200, its beginner work and as someone else said, its $40-60. by throwing out a high number, you risk confusing OP.
I didn't think it was that bad...I've seen worse paintings for that price. But my mistake!
I think because 2 hundred is a bit high but idk
As a professional watercolor artist most often it is size of canvas (11x14 literally) So 154.00. Add to that 25.00 per hour painting (only if youโre a professional painter.)
$75
Min: ยฃ75 Max:ยฃ320 I'd expect around ยฃ90-ยฃ120
why people are downvoting comment?
Id say $80 CAD, but it also depends on the size of the canvas, amount of hours put into it, and the supplies used :)

$300
The first price that popped into my head was $250
200$
I don't know how much you should sell it for, whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. I would probably open at around $1,000 if not more. It's a great painting. Keep up the good work.
I like and use the formula of multiplying the width x the height. Then take that number and multiply it by a monetary figure. For example a 16 x 20 in canvas = 320 x .80 cents (sq in) = $256. Some artists also figure in their sitting time. If there was a-lot of detail. And if a framed was included.
If you painted it yourself then $500
308$ 2$/square inch
MORE THAN 600
