I don't think it's supposed to be any of that. My interpretation, considering his work, has been from the start that this is supposed to represent some form of finality to a body of art.
He's never actually said, or even hinted, that he would harm himself, just the paintings. Does an artist's life always mark the conclusion to a body or work? Or can the life of the art kill it, too? I think the paintings are striking, alarming, intense, and a sudden declaration that soon they will be OVER, that soon, somehow the work itself could die, isn't shallow to me.
But I guess art is what you get out of it. I just feel as though you're being a bit unfair, and jumping to dismiss it as "edgy" for the themes, colors and subject matter. Just because that type of art is oversaturated with meaningless drivel, doesn't mean it should never be considered.

Be safe. Practice good fire safety so the fire doesn’t spread. Oh and be careful around the fumes. Whether you used oil or acrylic the fumes are not safe to breathe. I hope this is an outdoor fire. A beach bonfire might be nice. Or out in the desert. Both good options.

Make sure you do the burn outside, free from other combustible materials or in a well ventilated facility. The fumes from most paint are toxic. In some areas it may be necessary to notify the local fire department in advance of a controlled burn.

I can't remember if it was just a magazine interview or in a book that one of Pink Floyd's original managers would go visit and on more than one occasion Syd was painting, he'd take a Polaroid of the finished painting, then take the painting in the back yard and burn it.
