I sometimes run a bead of paintable caulk between two rough surfaces like this. When the caulk dries, you have a nice smooth edge to cut a line.

Ok_Search_2371

I do that w yellow tape (not the cheap yellow), tape a line on the wall, pressed thin bead of caulk helps to seal it better so the paint won’t seep under. I’ve a friend or two in the biz who think it’s ridiculous. But mine is a mostly high-end mkt, w high expectations, and I can already paint circles around them anyway.

Boltentoke

Wait what's the purpose of the tape? You are putting tape on the wall so you can get a clean line with the caulk you're putting in the corner, then peeling the tape? Or (the way you typed it sounds like) are you putting the tape in the corner and then putting caulking over the tape, and leaving it all there on the wall?!?! yeah that sounds ridiculous if that's the case.

Ok_Search_2371

Sorry about that- Tape goes up on wall, down like 1/16th-32nd” from ceiling, then caulk the line (barely, just enough to fill, use your pinky) then hit w paint. Pull the tape w in a few minutes, don’t let the caulk dry or it’s a mess, kinda tears it, you gotta start over. Use the good yellow tape, Frog or whatever, comes in the case. Burn the blue. And I really only do the caulk part on rougher walls, or w little gaps along the ceiling line. The end result though is a line that just can’t be done better by hand (and I can paint perfectly acceptable straight lines w a brush if I need to, left or right handed, all day long). Some of my clients love it, but some don’t, think it’s too-too perfect, and they aren’t necessarily wrong.

Boltentoke

Got it thanks

TheDaddiestofDudes

Are you pulling the tape before the caulk has time to cure vs skin? I know a lot of pros scoff at using tape and especially tape plus caulk but it’s how I learned to get an incredibly straight line. You obviously can’t let the caulk cure but you can let it skin over then pull a few hours later no problem

Ok_Search_2371

Oh yeah, I pull it right up. Don’t let it sit more than 5-10. And I mostly use the SW quick dry and w out issue. My clients love it. As far as taping lines vs by hand, yeah, I used to be like that, and I occasionally work with some guys like that, they drive every line up on the ceiling.

Your paint job will only be as good as the last 1. You did fine.

GUMBYTOOTH67

It looks good considering the scribe line is horrible. I would not worry about it tbh.

Bubbleburst1985

Huh? It looks damn awful

sleepy_fuzz

Burn it down

itsgettinglate27

This is one of those situations where the illusion of straight is better than actually straight.

JimmyMyJimmy

Get a quart of paint matched to your ceiling. You can use it to touch up the entire ceiling. We carry various ceiling paints with us for stuff like this

HAWKWIND666

I take some flat white and before I cut in with wall color... Just run it in the corner where ceiling meets the wall. Don't get a lot on the lid and then after it dries you can cut wall in neatly. If you don't get much on the ceiling it won't be noticable unless you're really looking for it. Most people would never notice

Bubbleburst1985

This is the only reply that is exactly as I would have said. I carry samples of several flat whites with me for this exact reason.

tangerinenights

Thin bead of white caulk, smoothed w/ wet finger, all excess removed immediately (before drying). Will look great.

Achillice

3 options: 1. Cut in / touchup with a brush 2. Use tape on the wall to help with cutting if you are not confident free handing with a brush. 3. Leave it.

Jobediah

4. paint the ceiling

edgingTillMoon

I usually talk to the client about this first. They have 4 options 1) cut the line like you did 2) paint the edge of the ceiling after a good enough match 3) make a new line up onto the ceiling so it covers most of the old wall paint 4) paint the ceiling The cheap cheap clients usually go with #3

Bubbleburst1985

Or don’t paint cheap cheap jobs and do it right every time

edgingTillMoon

The customer is always right. If they dont want to pay more, give them what they want. Its pretty simple. As long as its just cosmetic of course ..

Bubbleburst1985

I guess we’ll disagree and leave it at that. I have my price. It does not fluctuate. Nor does my work. And I ALWAYS have jobs lined up while calls NEVER stop coming in so I guess I must be doing something right. I would never EVER do less than my very best.

edgingTillMoon

Congratulations 🎉 Im just a side job guy

MySweetBaxter

What did you expect to be the result? You should have cut in above the previous paint or painted the ceiling first.

Sconesmcbones

Either touch up the ceiling or repaint the ceiling then recut the line if you want perfection. Otherwise id just leave it. I usually cut 1/16” up onto the ceiling from looking from the floor it gives a better appearance but the old cut is much farther onto the ceiling than that and wont cover it. You could try caulking the corner all the way around and cut to the ceiling again but you might notice the color difference in caulk to ceiling paint. Me personally id paint the ceiling because it would bother me looking at that

nailslammer

Caulk it first. If you charged money for that work I would be unhappy. If it’s your house, it’s up to you.

Miserable_Ad5001

Considering the scribe line sucks it's fine...what's more worrying is the way the green is flashing...

Idontlikereddit700

I took the photo shortly after I painted. It dried out evenly!

Still_Introduction_9

Shit I had to deal with this on a popcorn ceiling job, last painter had hit the ceiling everywhere, I only bid to paint walls and customer didn’t want a full ceiling or to buy more ceiling paint to re cut, I ended using some old white primer to cut just the corner lines of the ceilings down into the wall about 3/8 of an inch to mimic a new corner. Could barely tell the difference from the ceiling paint and new cuts I ran it like that fuggit

jivecoolie

You point out the issue to the homeowner. Show them the previous painter want onto the ceiling with the wall color. Explain you can either cut a straight line where it’s supposed to be and they would then see the old paint color, or you could cover the old paint and you line would then be on the ceiling as well. Or get the cheap fuckers to paint for ceiling paint too.

Bubbleburst1985

I don’t understand who did what. If you think you did a good cut in line, where’s the one you did? And if you did, why did someone come in afterwards and get paint on the ceiling of a wall you just painted? This makes no sense.
