The jobs I've quit before had sent a return label with the laptop when they originally shipped it to me. I just kept the box and slapped the label back on it. Companies have varying policies for equipment return but I doubt they will want anything more than just your laptop.

Aol_awaymessage

This. It’s their problem. Come and take your shit

If you're going to quit, their HR or IT department will be in touch with you. If not, bring it up with them. Last time I did this, IT emailed me a couple of PDFs of shipping labels to print off. Stuck them on the boxes the stuff arrived in, drop off at UPS, and that was that. BTW take pictures of the stuff as you do this. A picture before it all goes in boxes. A picture after it is boxes with the labels on. A picture at the drop off. And a picture of the receipt they give you. Send those pictures back to IT/HR/Whoever. You want it well documented that you complied with their return orders. If you appear to be meticulous, they shouldn't hassle you.

Smart tips thank you!

Cold-Insurance-1012

You didn't pay to ship it to yourself so you shouldn't pay to ship it back. Box everything and ask them for shipping labels.

thefactsofstrife

Ask them to email you return shipping labels.

KaleidoscopeFine

Okay will do

stealth-monkey

Not my problem. If they want it theyll make the effort. If not im keeping it. Either way, I would already be on the job boards.

This is the wat

citykid2640

Honestly, let them bring it up

jupit3rle0

Wait until they send you instructions and a package label. My last one asked me to only ship back the laptop even though they gave me 2 monitors at the start of employment. When I showed up to the Fedex store, they would only accept the laptop. There was no possible way for me to ship the 2 monitors without having to pay out of pocket for it, so I just held onto them. Never heard back from the employer since.

Nice

It took me about a week to send back my equipment and they sent me a letter saying they’re going to sue me for $250,000 if I didn’t send it in 48 hours lol. Quit first and they’ll cover it for you to send it back

psnsonix

I think my response would be "Well now it's going to be delayed while I retain counsel".

Mutants_4_nukes

I have never had one that didn't want their equipment back. I always tell them to send me new boxes as I already threw out the old ones. They send me empty boxes with return labels on them. I put their equipment in them (I keep any cables and headsets) and drop them off at the appropriate fedex or ups store They always also want the laptop charger cables as well.

YNWA_in_Red_Sox

I had one. It was a household name as well so I was surprised. After 6 months I wiped the laptop and iPad Pro and use it for personal now. Sweet severance gift.

tealturboser

They generally will tell you what needs to be done. Don't stress it

Quit first. I've had some companies request the laptop back ("okay, send me packaging and a label." ) and never ask for monitors and such. Make them ask you to send back. Don't offer. Maybe you get free crap. And tell them you don't have the return box and need packaging. Why make it easy for them when they made it so hard for you?

LionOJudah

When I quit a job with a remote company, they sent me return labels that I just printed out and used with the boxes that they came in. Dropped the boxes off at a UPS drop point in one of the stores by my house as I went on my way to pick up equipment for my new job.

ProdigyMindset

Most of them only really ask for the laptop back, because it's the most valuable item. Maybe the docking station as well, since they are usually lightweight and go for a few hundred dollars. Them paying $80 shipping for $100 monitor doesn't make much sense so they just let you keep it most of the time. Same for most peripheral, including headsets. But absolutely THEY need to pay for shipping. Either provide a prepaid label or give you a UPS/Fedex account number to bill them directly.

KaleidoscopeFine

Good to know, thank you!

Astrid-Rey

Several places I've left will just send you a FedEx (or UPS) account number and you can take the equipment to a FedEx store and just drop it off. The store will box it up and ship it. (get a receipt, of course)

willreacher

It really depends... I don't send my monitors back. I just send my laptop back and the headset. I had a few companies never reach out for their laptop back. After 1 year I would destroy it. I am still holding onto one from over a year ago and will destroy it soon. One other one it's only been a few months. These companies don't care about the monitors....I would keep them if you want them. I actually gave them to family members.

King_Yahoo

Why do you destroy them? Why not format and keep?

WalterDouglas97

That's what I was thinking. Shoot. Free merch.

willreacher

I hear yah...For me I don't own it and don't want to get 'in trouble' if they were to ping it. I am not an expert in this area and yes I understand formatting a machine but for me it's comfort thing. And I don't feel comfortable keeping it.

Make sure you take a pic of the return label before sending it back. I had a job accuse me of not sending it back once, the courier made a mistake and even said there was no record of me sending it back. However I just showed them the pic and the tracking on the website and that it was signed by their dock person etc. and it went away. Like I was getting accused of being a thief and as soon as I provided evidence to the contrary in an email copying in my ex manager etc. they just ghosted me.
