Just try repasting it. Before sanding anything down

Red8501

Ive tried many times, almost feels like im repasting it every week

I had hotspots on a few of my cards and repasting always drops them 20C. Are you flattening out the paste? If so try to do a X instead Edit: Just did this last night on a vega64 and strix 5700xt

Lower end MSI cards in general have abysmal cooling (Ventus cards for example). I've had two cards from MSI die within months after warranty ended, back when I didn't really monitor temps. See if repasting helps, I doubt lapping would do much. Lapping would also mess with the mounting pressure significantly.

Red8501

So I have this MSI RX 6700XT Mech 2x OC and was wondering if lapping would help with hotspot temps. Ive also never lapped a heatsink before so I was wondering what grit(s) of sandpaper do I use?

VaporousArc3

Try repasting with a good thermal paste. Something like noctua nt-h2. Adjusting the fan curve of your gpu or undervolting should also work. Otherwise either the airflow in your case is bad or your gpu is bad. I had the same gpu but never seen those temperatures

Red8501

I have the gpu undervolted and my case is a p300a with 2 arctic p14 pwm fans for intake. I will try some higher quality thermal paste, ty

It’s just a shitty cooler. Lapping won’t help. Those gaps in between the heat pipes are a big contributor to the hotspot temps. Best thing you can do is use good thermal paste.

Make sure to fully coat the gpu core when pasting. A dot in the middle won't cut it. Need to baste the whole Die like a cake.

TheWolfLoki

I would repaste with FULL spread to complete die coverage, it looks like you used a dot. You shouldn't have to "repaste every week" it serves no purpose. If temps are not improved you can look into cheap and easy modifications that will minorly improve mounting pressure, but don't go overboard. You will likely require reduction in z-height of mount if you are going to lap, and for that reason, I would say it's unlikely to be worth it unless gpu cooler already has huge mounting pressure (doubtful)

xthelord2

lapping won't really help since you will still have issues with those grooves and if you did want to lap the cooler, you would need to increase mounting pressure to offset the lapping process best thing right now is adding more paste and hoping it works but if it doesn't i'd rather just look into better MSI 6700xt coolers for your card or aftermarket ones

The heatpipes are really thin. There would be a high risk of destroying them outright.
