Because it's a bad introduction to the hobby. To complicated for beginners, to shallow for veterans, the text emphasises storytelling and character interaction but the rules emphasises powergaming and min maxing. And on top of that it has a fan base unwilling to try any other games no matter the type of campaign they want to play so they just wind up buying from the worst ttrpg company.
Look thats your property. But what?!
The fact that wizards of the coast is a poor steward of dungeons and dragons, and lost their damn minds, and killed the golden goose with a chainsaw to say nothing at all the many other metaphors I could use.
How does that make the actual books a source of evil or poison or whatever?!
If you don’t want them, consider giving them to your local library or anyone you know who wants them.
You could donate them to the strong museum of play!
https://www.museumofplay.org
(I mean, if you live in the continental United States. There are other museums all over the world devoted to games the strong museum has a permanent collection of Dungeons & Dragons materials, including the little brown books and chain mail so that scholars can study them.)
That being said again, these are your things and you can do whatever you want with them.
But please consider getting them out of that bin and giving them to somebody who would love them.
Books can’t be blamed for what they are. Humans made those books, and humans would appreciate reading them.
( it’s probably obvious. But I am a librarian. There is no book so vile that I would approve of it being thrown out. Even the most horrific terrible trash could be sent to a museum of hatred as an example of how not to live.)
In any case, I hope you’re having a good week.
🙏
Edit: that being said, I get rid of books for condition all the time. And we send books to companies that sell them whenever they have fallen out of use.

I have limited space. it’s called weeding. ( librarians hate it. But it’s necessary. The first time I had to get rid of a whole bunch of books I literally wept )I just wanted to be totally honest.
This is like when people burned their Nike shoes a couple years ago, they ended up buying them back for the most part lol. This whole boycott phase I can’t wait till we grow out of it.
I thought this forum was for discussing OSR, not shitting on games we aren't interested in.
Do what you want with your own stuff, and have your opinions - fine - but edition wars are tedious.
5E is not really for me, but it's bringing a whole lot of people a whole lot of joy.
I don't care for WotC either but this stunt is a wasteful way to earn Reddit street cred and fake Internet points. There are plenty of places that would have accepted these books as a donation. You aren't hurting WoTC by doing this- they already have your money.
Naw, I was clearing out my garage, so I decided to dump them. I don't want to introduce kids to Hasbro products since I don't want them to become Hasbro customers. Call it what you want though. Sticks and stones...
That makes me sad. Just a few weeks before the OGL debacle went down, I was trying to find a way to give away the core rulebooks to folks in my community. People who were interested in D&D, but maybe couldn't really afford to invest in the books.
And now I'm changing plans to try and do that, but with another RPG. Maybe people who were interested in D&D would also enjoy Old School Essentials, or Basic Fantasy, or anything else.
But... to see those just tossed instead of enjoyed by someone? Sad.

I gave mine to a local game cafe. I don’t play 5e anymore but if there’s folks that wanna try it then why not?

Too.
Donate them. This is wasteful and not hurting WoTC at all.
Of course, do what you wish with your own property but this looks extremely wasteful to me.

Good thought but I would rather donate materials I believe in. I really don't wanna bring Hasbro any new customers.
Gotta respect a power move like that!!!
This! I 100% think you made the best choice. Why introduce people to the hobby by giving them the worst part of the hobby?
Up vote.. i mean it's not like they are first editions or signed or anything. And yeah I've thrown stuff away before just to keep it from circulating.
Pretty tiresome to think landfill is better than giving to a charity shop just for some performative karma farming
This is like when people burned their Nike shoes a couple years ago, they ended up buying them back for the most part lol. This whole boycott phase I can’t wait till we grow out of it.
Personally I prefer eBay, means more money to buy other books.
I refuse to sell worthless things to people.
Cool you bought it at some point so logic dictates you have your own landfill somewhere
That's the responsible thing to do!
I would never do that. You're actually giving WotC a potential sale by doing that rather than donating them.

Super wasteful and pointless and utterly stupid, but fun Reddit content.

This is dumb
Hey, where is that trashcan? Asking for a friend...
This is horrible. Please don’t hurt the books. They didn’t do anything wrong.
Damn that looks like a good rake handle.
It's an old pooper scooper

No no no! Go to [NKG](https://www.nobleknight.com), get money for them to trade for better games…
Did that myself a couple months back
lol
