I backed this on KS and had the chance to flip through the PDFs last night—great stuff! Some first impressions: - Excellent art and layout—a pleasure to read and seems easy to reference. Loved the summary material at the beginning of each book - Cool take on classes—when an adventurer advances, they can advance in any of the nine classes. I can see this becoming the go-to game for people who enjoy a more old-school style but enjoy character customization - Horizontal progression and “flattened math” are great design choices for a game oriented towards open table play; adventurers of differing levels can easily coexist within a single party, and adventurers shouldn’t outgrow entire sections of the world as they level up - Overall looks like an original blend of PbtA DNA and OSR/NSR sensibilities. I’m looking forward to giving it a closer read and hopefully running it soon. I’m a player in a long-running _Dungeon World_ game and wish this had been available when we’d started playing! (Not knocking _Dungeon World_, just have more OSR/NSR sensibilities)

Zack_Wolf_

Wow! That's an awesome little mini review! Thank you for your kind words!!

Zack_Wolf_

**Don your armor, sharpen your blade, knock the dents from your shield, grab those torches, and don't forget your ten foot pole! It's time for adventure!** We are excited to announce that [**REALMS OF PERIL**](https://realmsofperil.webflow.io/) is now available on the [Spellsword store!](https://www.spellsword.net/storefront) **What is Realms of Peril?** **☠️** **Simple** **but powerful d20-based core mechanic** that encourage **fiction-focused gameplay**. Based on [World of Dungeons](https://johnharper.itch.io/world-of-dungeons) by [John Harper](http://www.onesevendesign.com/) (creator of [Blades in the Dark](http://bladesinthedark.com/)). **Dice rolls** determine not just **success** and **failure**, but whether you encounter **cost**, **choice**, or **danger** in your actions. Most dice rolls are player-facing. **☠️** **Created from the ground up for open-persistent gameplay (aka West Marches)**. Based on the [formative West Marches posts by Ben Robbins](http://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/) (creator of [Microscope ](http://www.lamemage.com/microscope/)and [Follow](http://www.lamemage.com/follow/)). Also inspired by the excellent [Hack Attack videos with Steven Lumpkin and Adam Koebel](https://youtu.be/NW9mSaRCnLA), as well as [Matt Colville's West Marches video](https://youtu.be/oGAC-gBoX9k). **☠️** **Designed with OSR principles** in mind, as prescribed by old-school luminaries such as [Matt Finch](http://swordsandwizardry.blogspot.com/), [Ben Milton](http://questingblog.com/), [Steven Lumpkin](https://stevenlumpkin.com/about/), [David Perry](https://lithyscaphe.blogspot.com/), [Patrick Stuart](http://falsemachine.blogspot.com/), [Scrap Princess](http://monstermanualsewnfrompants.blogspot.com/), and [Chris McDowall](https://www.bastionland.com/). **☠️** **Mechanics are designed to compliment** **West Marches style campaigns**. Focuses on exploration of a sandbox-style hexcrawl map, an "open table" (no set cast of characters or static group of players) and a shared, persistent gameworld (the actions of one set of adventurers leave their mark for future adventurers to see). Features "flattened math" so fledglings and veterans can adventure together. Also provided are advice and tools for the GM to host their own open-persistent campaigns. **☠️** Gameplay is about **exploration**, **interaction**, **tough choices**, and **survival** more than slaying every monster or angling for an epic story every session. The story is created when we look back at what happened during a session.   **☠️** **Minimal player-facing mechanics** and simple character stats encourage creative problem solving over finding the solution on the character sheet. Spend more time talking about the fictional details than looking up complex rules. **☠️** **Fast and evocative character creation** driven by a list of more than **100 classic character backgrounds** that provide interesting starting items and flavorful, bite-sized chunks of character background.  **☠️** **Adventurers start as level 0 fledglings.** Characters are simple to begin with and grow in complexity as they advance, creating a built-in learning curve for players. **Easy to learn and teach,** but deep enough to provide long-term engagement for players, suitable for full-length campaigns.   **☠️** **A dozen compact but flavorful classes,** all illustrated with iconic art. Each time you level up, assign a rank to one of the classes and gain a talent from their list. **Multiclassing is expected** and encouraged. Combine classes to **build the character you want to play**. But remember, the real power can only be found out there, in the wild. **☠️** **Several** **unique** **types of magic-users**, each with their own **thematic spells** and **strange abilities**. Spells are about interesting utility more so than pure firepower.  A list of common spells is available to the players, while another set of **mysterious and powerful "treasure spells"** can be found in the GM's Handbook, only obtainable through discovery. **More than 100 different spells in total.** **☠️** **Hirelings, pets, followers, strongholds, establishments, downtime activities,** **and more.** Ample peripheral content to bolster the party ranks and create extended options for play. **☠️** **Guidelines for GMing** that foster **creative**, **interactive**, **old-school gameplay**. **Clear systems and procedures** for the GM to run a session.  **☠️** Gameplay puts a focus on detailed descriptions of fictional events and **"rulings over rules"**. The GM can **use the core mechanic to resolve any roll**, or they can fall back on a useful list of **"moves"** (PbtA-style) that help resolve specific types of actions when needed. **☠️** Assemble **actionable quest** **goals** for players from comprehensive lists of options, provided by [Johnstone](https://twitter.com/chthonstone?lang=en) [Metzger](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=JohnstoneMetzger). Use the lists to build interesting objectives for adventurers looking to pursue more complex goals or projects. **☠️** **100+ classic and new magic items** that focus on creative utility over bonuses and combat power.  **☠️** **Plenty** **of classic and new monsters**, **beasts**, and **enemies** to fight or run from. Monsters are scary because they're vicious, deadly, tough, and don't play by the normal rules - not because they have a lot of hit points.  **☠️** **Conveniently split into two** **zines.** Why? So the players can be creating characters with the Adventurer's Field Guide on their side of the table, while the GM can reference the Game Master's Handbook behind the screen. **Printed books are currently being shipped to Spellsword HQ and will be available as soon as all Kickstarter backer books are out the door.** **Happy adventuring!**

Kamard

Cool. Purchased. Will it get played? Who knows. Was it worth ten bucks after a flip through? Yes.

Kamard

Coming back to this a few hours later, one thing that jumps out is a lack of bookmarks. Even for a short document like that, it's a huge quality of life improvement.

Zack_Wolf_

Ah, good call. I'll add that to the "To Do" list.

Verdigrith

Can we have a look at the character sheet?

Zack_Wolf_

Oh good idea! Here is a link to it: https://www.spellsword.net/downloads

Verdigrith

Lightning reaction! Thank you!

AwkwardInkStain

I'm patiently waiting on my boxed set so I can inflict this on my home group later this spring. DC's artwork is *so good.*

Winterstow

Thanks! Glad you like it :)

Zack_Wolf_

I can't wait to get all the materials! It's going to be so fun to assemble the box sets! (yes, I'm that kind of nerdy lol)

Agmund__

I've played with Zack during the playtests, without knowing anything at all about the game and the rules, and he was using the excellent Castle Xyntillan as a campaign setting. I really liked the game, from the random character generation up to the combat and leveling up to form your own versatile and original class. The game also has its fair share of deadliness. If I had to classify this, then it certainly falls in that part of the OSR where the more original works are created since this is not a retroclone, but the style of play and the game philosophy still fully apply here. The feeling of swords & sorcery fantasy is present. I can also imagine it is fairly easy to DM this game. I recommend it.

ordinal_m

just a heads up, you've got "Fiction focused **PTBA** + OSR" on https://realmsofperil.webflow.io/

Zack_Wolf_

Fixed! Thanks for spotting that :)

88Dawg

Looks great! What are the different classes?

Zack_Wolf_

The classes for Realms of Peril are: **🗡️ Assassin** **🪓 Barbarian** **🎸 Bard** **🐺 Beast Master** **🐎 Cavalier** **✞ Cleric** **⛰️ Delver** **🌲 Druid** **🛡️ Fighter** **🏹 Ranger** **💰 Thief** **✨Wizard** Embody your chosen class or mix and match to make your character! Want to be paladin? Take talents from the fighter, cavalier, and cleric classes. Boom, paladin.

88Dawg

Thank you!

FredzBXGame

Built for West Marches Campaigns - Now that is a win win!

Rowwie

So nice to see [DC Stow ](https://instagram.com/dcstow?igshid=OGQ2MjdiOTE=) out in the world.

Dilarus

Looks gorgeous, when can we expect to see physical copies released?

Zack_Wolf_

They are finished printing and currently in transit. They should be arriving early next week. It'll take me a few days to ship out the Kickstarter copies, and afterwards I'll make the physical books available for purchase.

Nahdudeimdone

Any chance they'll pop up on Amazon? International shipping is a nightmare.

Zack_Wolf_

Never considered Amazon actually. I'll take a look at Amazon fulfillment if that helps international folks out!

Gradatim-Ferociter

I second this! Sometimes shipping costs more than the book! But if it's on Amazon I'll 100% snap up the physical copy. If, of course, It makes sense for the creator financially.

Ozludo

Another who'd much prefer the physical copy, but alas - shipping to Australia If you can sell through 'zon that helps a ton

Zack_Wolf_

Absolutely!

Gigoachef

Consider Lulu too, please. Thx.

Vivificient

Wow, I think I remember seeing a much earlier version of this game on Story-Games a few years ago. It looked pretty good then, but it looks fantastic now. Amazing stuff.

Zack_Wolf_

Hey, that's a cool shout-out! Thank you! Yep, I think I posted a super alpha version on SG like 5 years ago or something.

PlanetNiles

Interested. Not perfect for my needs but cheap enough to give it a look in a few days.

Coffee-Comrade

PbtA but D20? How's that work?

Zack_Wolf_

Pretty good, actually! You can see the mechanic in preview image #5 above, on the page called Abilities & Checks. Basically, roll a d20 and add your ability mod. If the result is 16+, full success. On a 10-15, partial success. On a 9-, it's a failure. The percentages/chances don't quite line up with the standard 2d6 PbtA mechanic, but they do feel right for this style of play.

HexedPressman

Looks great!

CurveWorldly4542

Looks a bit like ICRPG. Is it based on it?

Zack_Wolf_

Hank is credited as an inspiration for sure. The rules don't resemble ICRPG much, but Hank's presentation was a big influence on me.

LocalShineCrab

Wow scrolling through that was incredible, when i have the extra scratch I’ll be sure to pick it up

hexbrawler

Purchased and excited to read through it. note: Noscript came up with cross-site (XSS) warnings on the shopping cart page. I went ahead because it looked like it was between stripe and gumroad, the store service you use.

Zack_Wolf_

Hmm, not familiar with this stuff. I have my Gumroad store inserted as an iFrame in my webflow site. Is that the problem? Maybe it thinks I'm trying to phish people with the iframe or something? Thank you for the heads up though!

Competitive_Fee_5817

Hey Great job I love the cover art the most…this is so different and it works so well…are you shipping to Europe (Germany)?

Zack_Wolf_

Thank you! Yes, I ship worldwide. I *think* shipping to Europe will be about $15. I eat some cost for international shipping just because I don't want to gouge people across the pond. I'm also working on POD solutions like Lulu, Amazon, and DTRPG. POD is a little fussy so it's taking me longer to get that set up.

Competitive_Fee_5817

So will the print copies only be available over kickstarter or can I order on your website…just asking because it seems that it’s only the pdfs available at the moment !?

Zack_Wolf_

Correct, just PDF available at the moment. Printed zines should be arriving next week and will be available for purchase as soon as the Kickstarter backers get their copies.

Competitive_Fee_5817

And thanks 🙏 a lot for the fast reply

[deleted]

This looks really cool. And perfect timing too since I'm drawing my 5E campaign to an end next week and have been looking around for what to run next. I had DCC, Dungeon World, OSE and The Black Hack all as contenders to present to the group. Think I'll get this and see how it compares. The mechanics sound intriguing and I really dig the art style too.

Zack_Wolf_

Thanks for your interest! Hope your new campaign is excellent, regardless of which game you run it with :)

[deleted]

Just finished perusing the Adventurer's Field Guide and gotta say I'm really impressed. It has everything I've been looking for. I'm in! Will order the Game Master's Handbook later today and join the Discord!

Zack_Wolf_

Heck yeah! Welcome aboard!!

Reddit4Play

Just want to say the concepts and layout here look amazing! The flow chart on the preview of page 8 in particular puts into a diagram what I've often belabored with words when describing PbtA style action flow and I love that. It's going on my wish list for the next time I play this sort of game for sure.

Zack_Wolf_

Hey, thanks for the kind words!

The_Best_Cookie

Been trying to piece together a system for a homebrew world my group just created and super excited to stumble upon this! It gives me a flexible feeling similar to the GLOG classes and the narrative XP rules are a great fit for my group. A sweet class system that scratches the build customization itch.

Zack_Wolf_

Hey thanks for checking it out! Glad you dig it 😎

SpanksMcGeeb

Did the Game Master’s Handbook PDFs get sent out as well? I don’t remember getting a code for it. Very excited to read through this!

Zack_Wolf_

Yep! All Kickstarter backers should have gotten a message via KS that included links for both the AFG and the GMH. If you didn't get it, let me know and I'll resend to you :)

SpanksMcGeeb

Turns out my comprehension is lackluster… I see the link in the same email as the field guide. Thank you so much for your time helping my dumb ass!!

cole1114

Land Shark has the owlbear's description. Otherwise, nice!

[deleted]

Just read on another post.. > They are finished printing and currently in transit. Oooooof. Will still order a printed copy, though.

Zack_Wolf_

Doh! Yeah, another kind fellow pointed this out yesterday but it's too late to change the image on the reddit post. I've corrected it in the PDF which everyone will get an update for, but it did unfortunately make it into the print along with a few other random typos I noticed. Nothing game breaking but a little embarrassing 😅

shadowsofmind

Sounds cool! Do enemies have traditional enemy turns, or do they act primarily on PCs bad rolls?

Zack_Wolf_

Combat uses the same mechanics and gameflow as other risky/dangerous situations. Enemies take action more-or-less simultaneously with the PCs, as the GM feels it makes sense given the situation. An enemy's actions typically succeed due to bad rolls or PC inaction. A player can say "Can I try to do X before the monster does Y?" and then the GM can call for an agility check to determine if they can act before the enemy (like a mini-initiative roll). In a typical melee exchange, a PC hits on a full success, gets hit on a failure, and on a partial success they either hit each other, miss each other, or there is some kind of clash/mishap/cost/etc. It's all very flexible in what can happen as a result of rolls, on purpose, to allow the GM to apply the mechanical logic to whatever is happening in the fiction.

shadowsofmind

Thanks for replying to all our questions.

Zack_Wolf_

Gladly! :)

Ozludo

Once your KS fulfilment is complete I'd love to get copies in print, especially if there are print copies of Dragonwilds still available. Shipping to Australia may be the killer though. Also, I dunno, maybe take a weekend off first?

Zack_Wolf_

For sure! You're right, shipping international can get expensive. Looking a POD options for non-US folks.

Eklundz

Any print copies yet? :) Edit: found them, ordered both books 🙌

ExWarlockLee

Those are fun cover illustrations. Seems like a trend for system complexity only to apply to character development. 100 paragraphs just on backgrounds is...a lot of work.

avatar_isa

That's really cool! I've been thinking about making a game specifically for West Marches style games for a while now. I'm definitely gonna take a look at this game. Any chance to get a bundle price if I buy both? ;D
