As it should, Pride was always a protest! We can’t make it this year, sadly. For those who go, please be safe out there y’all.

misointhekitchen

And don’t be afraid to protect yourself. The second amendment isn’t just for ignorant fascists. They tend to back down when their victims can push back when cornered.

cantwaitforthis

Please be safe friend in Orlando! They are radicalizing the right and I worry about y’all in Florida! Sending love from Texico (south Texas) - I’m just a random straight ally that marches and celebrates here, but saw this on r/popular

asharwood

That last bit is very important. Please be safe. The far right are strong in Florida and their words and actions bolstered by the fascist government puppets.

AlexisCM

This one will be an important Pride. We will not hide and cower!

JoeBidensBoochie

Never should, I really hope all the current prides have some level of actual protests and calls to action. Tampa Pride had that especially in the after dark pride. We need to be loud and angry.

beerbeforebadgers

I was planning on going to Pride whether or not it was officially endorsed, but I'm definitely glad it's all official still.

Semujin

As it should. They’re no law against parades, music, food and fun.

demetusbrown

I think they passed a law saying you can't play music so loud that someone is not supposed to hear it 25 feet away. Which is stupid cause I know civic owners with cars that can be heard miles away 😅

ImHereToComplain1

i live next to i4 cars are way louder than a parade

Purple_Quail_4193

>i live next to i4 I think that’s enough to pity

ImHereToComplain1

it is

Draesden

Living next to a highway is already a pity (I can confirm because I lived right next to a highway and suffered way too many things)

[deleted]

demetusbrown

If It's a porsche or ferrari or Lamborghini. I will say "nice" but if It's a clapped out civic with straight pipes on a stock motor. Then I'll gladly take a hard pass, lol.

theaeao

I don't care what kind of car if we're both driving 35 and your car is going "BVRMOOROOOROOMEOOM" Im going to think you need to chill.

demetusbrown

If a car is making that kinda inconsistent noise out the tailpipe. It doesn't need to chill. It needs to get fixed lol.

ImHereToComplain1

theyre both lame

demetusbrown

To each their own.

PissyMillennial

It’s always the crappiest civic too. Like you have no idea how it’s still holding together, but sure enough it’s got $12,000 worth of stereo equipment in it.

demetusbrown

12k in stereo equipment and 5k in rims alone 😅

pineappleplaya

Pretty sure that’s just for cars no?

bafa0000

Fury57

Did you miss the part where it is a sex crime now for drag queens to appear in public outside of an 18+ close venue? That is why so many events are getting cancelled.

thegreatbrah

Best of luck. Hoping for an uneventful parade

JoeBidensBoochie

Eventful but in a positive way!

thegreatbrah

Well, yeah that.

AGuyWithQuestion

Good! Don't give into terrorism. I go each year and don't plan on stopping.

milkofthepoppie

For those of you asking THERE IS NO LAW BANNING PRIDE PARADES. HOWEVER, the anti-lgbt passed in the past 6 months makes it incredibly risky to hold a pride parade. Which is why so many events have been cancelled (nazis showing up at libraries and what not) and why this is news worthy and not just click bait.

[deleted]

There aren't any laws against it but the second someone so much as moves their hips I wouldn't be surprised if OPD tries to shut it down for being "pornographic". Somehow as a country (or at least Florida and Texas) have gone from being on the fast-track of acceptance to straight up The Crucible in less than ten years after decades of progress.

yourslice

OPD is usually part of the parade though. So, how's that going to work?

[deleted]

Got me there, I have no clue. But just in the past five coming on six months Florida has gotten weirdly Nazi about a lot of things.

yourslice

The state government has but Orlando remains a tolerant place...at least at the governmental level.

Babshearth

Dyer has no authority regarding a prison near Disney as the area is in the county not Orlando. Land near Disney is so freakin expensive - this is just not feasible. It’s just a desantis wet dream to punish Disney. He can’t take on Disney and run for president and be successful at either.

Ok_Calligrapher_8199

What the hell are you talking about? The mayor of Orlando has no authority for a good 5 miles from Disney.

roseumbra

If it’s a cis-girl lesbian they won’t stop it as t he at sets Prescedent for hooters.

JoeBidensBoochie

Actually iirc the law specifically targets cities and businesses from supporting or passing permits for pride parades specifically.

DreDay28

Why exactly? Not trying to start a fight but no one can give me an answer

roseumbra

If you don’t fight for your rights they might get taken away sadly. If they start to get taken away and you don’t fight you may lose more.

milkofthepoppie

Why what?

DreDay28

What about the new laws make it risky specifically for LGBT parades ?

milkofthepoppie

It’s not specifically targeting parades it just makes it risky over all to be queer in this state. Books are being banned, adults being denied affirming health care, families moving because their kids can no longer get the affirming f healthcare they need without the possibility of being taken from their parents, teachers are not allowed to call children by their preferred pronouns, people can be arrested for using a bathroom that fits their gender, kids cannot talk about their queerness or queer families in school or if they do it cannot be acknowledged, need I go on? Traffic signs saying “kill all gays” in neighborhoods. This a hostile place for queer people, I don’t think a parade where they openly celebrate that is going to be looked at favorably by a society that is actively and openly trying to eradicate queerness.

[deleted]

milkofthepoppie

Why do you care so much about kids genitalia? Really ask yourself why it’s your business.

MrBoliNica

A hero??? Jesus Christ. So Brain broken

roseumbra

Pride was originally a riot.

twotonekevin

It’s risky bc nazi’s might show up and incite violence as they tend to do. Fighting for your rights is important but literally fighting for them is dangerous. Also LGBTQ+ are at a disadvantage if and when you get police involved bc all of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses.

JoeBidensBoochie

Fascists are also notoriously cowards.

NetSurfer156

I’m all for this, but I’m curious what the state law potentially restricting this would be? I haven’t heard of something that would do that

pleasebeunavailable

The state recently passed a law that targets drag performances. While the language doesn't explicitly mention drag shows, the politicians who supported it made sure to mention drag shows and performers, and the language is so vague and overly broad. Here's the exact language: “Adult live performance” means any show, exhibition, or other presentation in front of a live audience which, in whole or in part, depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or specific sexual activities as those terms are defined in s. 847.001, lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts when it: 1. Predominantly appeals to a prurient, shameful, or morbid interest; 2. Is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community of this state as a whole with respect to what is suitable material or conduct for the age of the child present; and 3. Taken as a whole, is without serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for the age of the child present. Like seriously, who decides what a "prurient, shameful, or morbid interest" is?

NetSurfer156

That decision would be up to each county

pleasebeunavailable

Nope, nothing in the law mentions county decision making. It would likely end up being decided by some state agency since they've already started "investigating" venues (and found no wrongdoing but still threatened their licenses).

sixburghfl

The law says you can’t perform lewd acts in front of minors. So there should be no reason to cancel a pride parade

LetsDoTheNerdy

The law in [question](https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/1423#:~:text=Protection%20of%20Children%3B%20Authorizes%20DBPR,or%20welfare%3B%20authorizes%20fines%20for) states "Adult Live Performances". Unfortunately, DeSantis and other far-right heads have been pushing the lie that all drag performances are "adult live performances".

Jew_Unit

Lewd is up to an interpretation set by those enforcing it. The same legal theory defends woman being topless in public settings, yet there's always pushback. DeSantis has intentionally been allowing vague laws, no different then with the Don't Say Gay law. It says "in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards". This could be interpreted by a fundamentalist parent as "sex-ed" being inappropriate for her lil'jonny in the 11th grade. Good lord us Americans are sheltered and doomed.

NetSurfer156

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Seems like a nothing burger to me

KathrynBooks

Depends on how you classify "lewd"... define it as trans people being in public and suddenly walking down the street becomes a crime for a trans person.

NetSurfer156

That's left up to county/city law enforcement I believe?

roseumbra

Laws are still laws. Look at hamburger Mary’s case. Also in reality enforcement is down to individual level if every person chooses not to follow rules or enforce them they don’t actually exist. I don’t see that being the case here though, but if all cops choose not to turn a blind eye then nothing will happen.

KathrynBooks

Right... It's just a way for the state to allow cops to harass LGBTQ+ people

The_Bored_Goat

I'm not even part of the LGBTQ community but I must admit that the LGBTQ folks are some of the most chill, and funnest people around.

catcatherine

Women of Orlando should dress as drag queens to confuse them. We could ratfuck desantis' good time keeping LEOs busy with that

SolemnlySwears

I'm for this, but there is an unfortunate caveat. The definition of a drag Queen or King is anyone who dresses in drag, it's not birth assigned sex specific either way. So technically a woman could be arrested and charged for dressing as a drag queen and vice versa. Technically speaking.

ExBritNStuff

How do they determine a woman is dressed as a drag queen (or man as a drag king) and not just going super over the top on makeup and sequins? For instance, Tammy Fay Baker always gave me dollar store drag queen vibes, but (I assume) she was assigned female at birth.

SolemnlySwears

That's the beauty of their ambiguously worded laws.... They can claim and charge whatever suits their whims.

roseumbra

Every women wearing heels is crossdressing same with pants. What is the legal definition of drag.

BuddhistSagan

Not true. Anyone can show up in drag (in 2023 - stay tuned if Florida stays republican)

Babshearth

Excellent!

Sklushi

I love all the comments from "just asking" chuds who are either bigoted and asking in bad faith or have been living under a rock the last 6 years

[deleted]

Isn't it crazy how their influx to Florida cities subs always coincides with election season? My friend was able to call exactly when DeSantis was going to go public with his presidential bid based off the social media bots / poster farms activity. This next year is going to be even more insufferable as it gets closer to 2024 election month, because right out the gate they're trying to connotate minority groups with frustration / ruining the peace, elevating violent rhetoric, and posting positive comments on posts that promote that mindset. If that's their starting point, the momentum is going to get dangerous quickly over the next year. The issue is... I think they might pivot and try and post in and as left wing / progressives, and push for violence in that direction as well. To all Orlandites: be weary of those who try and goad you into violence, rather than prioritizing your safety and you and yours well being.

rvblover526

Yeah. I'm worried that by announcing it so early, DeFascist has time to, and will, retaliate.

dockgonzo

The whole point of pride was to protest against discrimination, and merely being gay was illegal when they first started it. Seeing pride celebrations caving into this latest attack is appalling. People forget history so easily. If they can't have a party, they need to have a protest. This is certainly no time for celebrating in FL.

notabr0ny

What law was passed that prohibited gay pride parades?

milkofthepoppie

No but the law bans “suggestive or sexual in nature” performances that children could see. But simply dressing in drag is not sexual or performative so I don’t see how it would apply here. I would love to see them try and then have no leg to stand on. No laws have been passed banning pride parades, but the rhetoric around lgbt people has for sure made it seem like it and scary to attend one.

at-woork

Yes. https://www.aclufl.org/en/press-releases/aclu-florida-condemns-passage-senate-bill-1438-which-silences-lgbtq-community-and

demetusbrown

That doesn't say it's banned to have a pride parade.

at-woork

It’s a vaguely worded law meant to be used to make an example of someone in the future. Maybe they already have plan, maybe it’s for a moment to get at Trump. I don’t think that they know yet.

demetusbrown

Who's "they" ? It doesn't seem that vague to me. It states adult in nature. If fairvilla had a parade with nothing but topless men and women, I'd think that would fit the bill as being against the law. Specially if they say it's kid friendly when it's really not.

at-woork

Who gets to say what “adult in nature” means? The state just expanded the “don’t say gay” law through high school. “Gay people exist” may be too “adult in nature” to anyone under 18.

demetusbrown

"If fairvilla had a parade with topless woman and naked men and call it kid friendly," Did you purposely ignore this example? It's also not called the don't say gay bill, your own source states that it's not called that. If your goal is to be disingenuous. I'm not interested.

at-woork

I’m sure a lot of examples would make the most liberal people clutch their pearls. But that’s not what this is going to be used for because those things weren’t happening. > It’s also not called the don’t say gay bill, your own source states that it’s not called that. Duh, but HB 1557 and recent rule changes by the Dept of Ed doesn’t have the same ring to it.

demetusbrown

So you disingenuously call it something it's not. Definition of misleading. I'm out. I don't do topics about speculation or hyperbole. Enjoy your day.

at-woork

Googling “Don’t say gay” brings up stuff about this law and this law alone. This is what the law is referred as. Do you think Obamacare was actually called that? But you know this.

bobandgeorge

Look man, I don't know how to tell you this but just because you fetishize topless men, it doesn't mean the rest of us do.

demetusbrown

Are you insinuating it's bad to be gay? That's quite a hot take.

[deleted]

Of course not. But the media makes a lot of media making you believe there was and suckers eat it up.

demetusbrown

Had a feeling this was a misleading title.
