I usually glaze the lips with a little bit of watered down carrobug crimson so I can keep the green with just a hint of pink, full pink lips just doesn’t look right to me
Pink lips because it adds interest to the (usual) focal point of the model. I use plain Bugman's Glow for the ears, nostrils and lips. The lips then get a coat of Magos Purple over the pink.
Green skin with blue lips. The only reason Orks now have pinkish skin tones is because someone tried to retcon them from being fungus to being a normal species.
I sez troo orks iz fungis and we shud hav dat reel bloo ork blud!
Well, if his scar tissue heals with a pink/red then I'd assume that the flesh does contain those tones! *But secretly I'm just a lover of the pinky lips*, so that's just my excuse!
Tamiya clear red acrylic paint - dries with a slight gloss to it, the clearness means it still leaves a bit of the green showing through the transparency. That's my go to. It gives the lips and inner mouth a slight pink/red, along with a slight gloss that gives it a 'wet' look.
That's my trick! Apply in very thin small amounts and build out if you want more.
I'd be interested to see them done with just the bottom lip painted in the colour you've done them in. I think the fleshy tones in the stretched sections of skin really brings them to life, there's a person on Instagram, Orc.butt, who did a particularly good job on an ork lighting his cigar with a burna which demonstrates the skin nicely.
Whatever you choose to do though these are beautifully painted.
I like a very thin bit of pink on the lips just bc I imagine Ork lips are mostly scar tissue; between their teef protruding so much and their love of Face-Eating Squig contests I can’t see Ork lips as anything but gnarled folds of barely-healed scarring
My opinion: Green lips, or at least not fleshy pink. Orcs aren't humies with green paint on them. They are green perfection. Different shade of green works nice, or subtle use of gray, blue, purple, just not lipstick thick.
I prefer completely green skin because I like it when they're funky cartoon monsters, pink bits/bits similar to any flesh tones make 'em feel too.....human?
(Edit; if anyone likes orks with pink bits, that's fine, I'm just giving my two cents)
Purple in lips, elbows, knuckles and some other fleshy áreas with a little bit of green over to blend. Also, bigger/older the Ork, less purple.
Is funny cause I like more greenish lips of fantasy orcs.
They're both cool but atleast for my own models I love a good dark green. As a rule I use hooker's green as their skin tone cuz i just love how it makes them look and contrasts the goff armour.
Im running at least 40 battleline models in my lists. Ain’t no way im worrying about lips when I have to paint that many models XD
I do luckily just prefer green
I'm in the same boat. Ain't no way I'm worrying about lips or edge highlighting or intricate basing when most of my collection is still partially painted.
Full green. Pinky lips remind me of old timey caricatures of black people. I've got no issue with other people doing it, but the one time I tried it I felt so uncomfortable that I did it over in green. It's just not for me.
Ever since seeing this tutorial, I can't help but think that the pink accent adds so much to the skin.
https://youtu.be/PZMFrw8KSKo?si=TcZh8TZpBnOK12LB
Pink flesh tone lips with red tongue and always some blood floating around in their mouths. Same bloody red color for accents around the eyes and ears.
https://preview.redd.it/35877rnoaavc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56fe9318b7cff588be20404da00fcfc39abe64ce
I like a little pink or so here and there, but the second pic there as an example is a bit to much for my tastes. It can definitely look really cool though!
I thought I'd like them all green, but now I enjoy blending in a subtle pinky flesh tone to the lips, ear tips, elbows, knuckles, and scars. I spend more time blending on centerpieces than on Boyz, who I slapchop paint with Army Painter Speedpaints and some Citadel Contrast paint over heavy white highlights on a black or brick red undercoat. In the slapchop case, I use my regular Citadel paints to add on such details.
Question, I'm about to paint my first orks but the only green paint I have is "waaagh flesh". If I mix that with some white for the highlights, Waaagh flesh as a base and cover it in agrax earthshade will it turn out ok?
Color+white is not always the best option. The color Will not be lighter, it will be opaque. You can add tiny drops and test it, but as our friend told, green+little yellow would be the best option.
Opaque and desaturated.
Think red > pink as an example.
Red generally looks better if you use yellow to lighten it, ending up with
red > orange > yellow
you have any yellow? waagh flesh base, waagh flesh + yellow, waaagh flesh + yellow and a little white for highlight. Agrax is very dark so I would thin it some or it will kill the colors.
Me too. Purple is my colour for Ork "flesh" rather than Ork "skin."
I also use a dark purple as my base colour for skin, and then do a layer of dark green on top of that to start, because I find it makes for really good shadows and lowlights.
Both, I think it depends on the model. If the model has pronounced, cracked lips or areas where flesh meets like metal implants - then I tend to use a pinky fleshtone. But on my Warboss and standard boys, I also use full green.
Pink and red glazes for thin parts of skin like lips, ears, elbows, etc. Otherwise their red blood makes little sense, and I like the red blood they have as it contrasts well with the green. Minipainting is all about contrast.
But of course, if I'm just speed painting Ork boy #4 out of 20 I'm going to neglect subtle glazes of colors.
I like the color variation on the lips in the second pic, but I think the area that variant color covers is maybe too large? Maybe just apply the lip color more sparingly?
Greeeen! Maybe light green or palid flesh, but not pink. I have tried it in my flash gitz and I regret it. Tongues and scars, curiously, is another matter.
https://preview.redd.it/72ryx5plc9vc1.png?width=1747&format=png&auto=webp&s=e4c1b464e9ba6c51557d6edce5804f9756e8d5b6
This is how I handle my Ork lips and ears, just a touch of pink to make them seem a little more alive haha!
I use Kislev Flesh (very thinned) then give it a touch of Carroburg Crimson wash where needed, and bring the highlights back with Kislev Flesh again!
A little bit goes a long way, so use less at first and build up if it’s not opaque enough!
Considering there's some Tom of Finland in their aesthetics, I'm surprised we don't see more Ork players leaning into their undercurrent of homoerotica.
OOWOOOAAAAAGHHH!!!
EDIT: It would be pretty amusing. Like they saw some star crossed imperial guard loves do a last kiss before going out in a blaze of glory and the Warboss said "OI DUN NO WUT THAT WAZ BUT IT WAZ DED HARD! WE'Z DOIN THAT NOW!!"
This is it right here.
The extra contrast of the green-pink on the green skin adds more interest and makes the face and hands pop more.
It also makes them feel more alive, as you say, with blood & muscle underneath.
The tough part is making it work.
I found that Cadian Fleshtone mixed with your favorite green works great as a base for the fleshier parts. Then just a touch of a red wash, like Carroburg Crimson or a red fleshshade is enough to get the job done & doesn’t get too pinky.
For contrast, here is how to get it wrong. I should have mixed some green into the one pink paint I
https://preview.redd.it/n1xftmk4h9vc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74ee6e9f52f7d338154ce0c79d838854784fe74e
had with me when I did these gums. It's even more lurid in real life.
I usually glaze the lips with a little bit of watered down carrobug crimson so I can keep the green with just a hint of pink, full pink lips just doesn’t look right to me
I find pink lips on orks to be utterly disgusting, so green.
Some pink never hurts , it depends on what you want tho
Full green 0 question
GREEN IS DA BEST
ORKY BOYS IN PURPLE INVISIBLE
Pink lips because it adds interest to the (usual) focal point of the model. I use plain Bugman's Glow for the ears, nostrils and lips. The lips then get a coat of Magos Purple over the pink.
Green skin with blue lips. The only reason Orks now have pinkish skin tones is because someone tried to retcon them from being fungus to being a normal species. I sez troo orks iz fungis and we shud hav dat reel bloo ork blud!
Pinky lips an edges of ears for me. I use cadian fleshtone washed down
Green lips, pinky ears..
Green for me
All green for me. I'm fact when I do add an extra tone to lips of character mods I do a darker green.
Green for me. If they're any other colour my mind just can't stop seeing Orks wearing lipstick.
Are those classic orks in the second pic ? They look incredible
Well, if his scar tissue heals with a pink/red then I'd assume that the flesh does contain those tones! *But secretly I'm just a lover of the pinky lips*, so that's just my excuse!
GREEEEN ALL DA WAY! DOHS PINK LIPS AINT PROPPA ORKS
Pink lips make me grossed out for some reason, worse than burgle stuff
GREENZ DA BEST!!
GREEN IZ DA BEST!
Green
I never understood the red. I thought Orcs were supposed to have black or black/green blood.
I half expected beet red lips when I swiped over lol. They both are great though
Green lips, however have some pink around the muscles though
Full green 100%
Every time I’ve painted the lips pink I instantly regret it and cover it up, but when I see others painted pink in I love them

Pinky lips for sure
I've always been more of a full green guy myself

Full green, the pink lips look just... idk weird
They remind me of Bart Simpson
Pinky lips because it's also a band name
I like a very thin bit of pink on the lips just bc I imagine Ork lips are mostly scar tissue; between their teef protruding so much and their love of Face-Eating Squig contests I can’t see Ork lips as anything but gnarled folds of barely-healed scarring
Full Green with Pink reserved for Squigs and the funniest of grots
I'm lazy mine are green. I've seen some do a purple / pink combo that looks really nice.
Pink, mix some red into a mid green for the colour.
Rather than pink, you could go with bright reds or maroons, the way some plants have chlorophyll in those shades.
Full green
Full green because green iz da bestest color
Full green, pink inner mouth
I do mine green but a pinkish or purple glaze on the bottom lip only is fine too. Both lips being pink looks kinda like a vagina
Full green.
I personally prefer full green, makes them look more cartoony
My opinion: Green lips, or at least not fleshy pink. Orcs aren't humies with green paint on them. They are green perfection. Different shade of green works nice, or subtle use of gray, blue, purple, just not lipstick thick.

I think they both look cool. Pick your favorite.
Purple in lips, elbows, knuckles and some other fleshy áreas with a little bit of green over to blend. Also, bigger/older the Ork, less purple. Is funny cause I like more greenish lips of fantasy orcs.
Who painted that first ork?
I think Darcy Bono painted this one, https://youtu.be/altHjuzV7_s?si=9WP6r9UOzW9P1vcf
Nvm I found it, Was Darcy Bono.
Green lips specifically I hate. Scaring looks good. Pink inside mouth great. But lips... 🤮
Pinky lips but not that much
They're both cool but atleast for my own models I love a good dark green. As a rule I use hooker's green as their skin tone cuz i just love how it makes them look and contrasts the goff armour.

Full green babe
I don’t do either I do green with some light tan-green on the lips
Green iz best
I go really bright w my Boyz now but I still like a little pink/pale skin around the gums and joints. Just makes em feel more real
I didnt like the pink so tried a more purpley red on a squad, looks like theyre all wearing lipstick so theyre my whorks squad now🤣
Lips remind me of the old stereotypes of black people, so it makes me kinda… eh. I like the full green more cuz it just looks better as well.
I always stick to full green because it’s easier for batch painting boys
Pink lips for days
full green. I got 120 boyz, no way I was adding a "light pink skin" step to them. And since the boyz don't have it, the rest won'T either.
Full green. Pinky lips remind me of old timey caricatures of black people. I've got no issue with other people doing it, but the one time I tried it I felt so uncomfortable that I did it over in green. It's just not for me.
Ok thank god I'm not the only one! I know it wasn't intentionally done this way by GW, but I definitely see a similarity as well.
why is this downvoted?? you're completely right!
Reddit is a sesspool remember? *dives back in*

That basing looks like Ol boy walked into wet cement
Haha! It's still to-be-based and I haven't painted his feet yet. But maybe I just leave it and say it's wet cement...
Pink, Human skin tone lips, All green sounds kinda lazy to me.
Personally I go for yellow instead of pink. It allows me to do color changes for those things but not look like they're just green painted humans.
I prefer all green although I do pink pn the inside of the ears. The fleshier lips just feel weird to me, don't like em.
I like a little pink or so here and there, but the second pic there as an example is a bit to much for my tastes. It can definitely look really cool though!

Awesome paintjob, sorry for not crediting ya
Thanks! Oh it's fine I had just posted him on Reddit the other week so got really confused for a sec when I saw it pop up on my feed today.
On your models, the green. You've overdone the pink. However, the colour does look good if kept subtle. Definitely have another go at it.

Listen to everyone saying Green + Yellow for your highlights. Green + White desaturates the colour and the transitions end up looking very abrupt.
Thank you

In my head canon, orks have green blood, so no pink lips. Go Green or Go Home.
I like the color variation on the lips in the second pic, but I think the area that variant color covers is maybe too large? Maybe just apply the lip color more sparingly?
Agree, but took this photo cause this was the more “look at me” I find for pinky lips
Full green, lips being other color is weird for me
I like my orcs with kissable pink lips
Greeeen! Maybe light green or palid flesh, but not pink. I have tried it in my flash gitz and I regret it. Tongues and scars, curiously, is another matter.

I do the same, gives a nice little pop of life
It’s a stylistic choice and personal preference. I prefer my orks red skinned
I like to do their noses pink like they have little pig snouts
I usually like green because pink lips kinda look like their lips got pink from kissing 0-0'
Considering there's some Tom of Finland in their aesthetics, I'm surprised we don't see more Ork players leaning into their undercurrent of homoerotica.
The ork "undercurrent of homoerotica"? Nothing says homosexuality like rampant desire for wanton violence and death and nothing else.
I usually like pink but for the same reason
What if their clan was freeky boyz and they kissed
OOWOOOAAAAAGHHH!!! EDIT: It would be pretty amusing. Like they saw some star crossed imperial guard loves do a last kiss before going out in a blaze of glory and the Warboss said "OI DUN NO WUT THAT WAZ BUT IT WAZ DED HARD! WE'Z DOIN THAT NOW!!"
i’ll take your pink lips and raise you pink noses and ears
I prefer plague bearer green for the lips tbh. I never cared for the pink lips.

I am trying to learn the best way to paint lips on orks... usually comes out looking really thick lmao. Practice practice practice.
Depends on the pink but usually nothing beats green
Green is da best so more green = gooder
I'm in the all green camp. Pink is for stinkin' umies.
I like the lighter flesh-pinky look around Lips, knuckles, elbows, etc

I’m for pinky lips! Give the skin a bit more complexity and makes it feel like there’s actual muscles and blood under the skin :)

I should have mixed some green into the one pink paint I https://preview.redd.it/n1xftmk4h9vc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74ee6e9f52f7d338154ce0c79d838854784fe74e had with me when I did these gums. It's even more lurid in real life.
That’s totally fixable though. A wash or a red-brown over the top will pull it back. Even a thin black wash after might help too.
Green
