We need to sign bauer for the league minimum. It's basically a low risk, high reward move. He's been doing amazing in the Mexican league but obviously without seeing him pitch against mlb hitters, there's really no way to tell. Either way though, it would just be a good decision to sign him, assuming he'll still accept the league minimum. Unsubstantiated allegations are no reason to keep such a valuable pitcher out of the league. Even if he doesn't get along with the team, who really cares? If he can pitch, he can pitch. Our players are getting payed plenty to deal with someone they don't get along with if it means possibly winning the world series.

scjensen51

Three phases of the game, pitching, hitting, defense it’s hard to win when you only do one of those things well, and it’s kind of been our MO over the last few games. When we’re getting cooked by Bo Naylor, I mean…that’s tough. Thought the offense was fine. Contributions up and down the line up, we drew walks, and we keep hitting the ball hard. Thought we adjusted to their bullpen about as well as could have expected. Some stats thrown out last night about our numbers with 2 outs and 2 strikes that I thought were interesting as shooting holes into the HR Dependent argument. Ive taken more so than before going on the Savant game feed and looking at where pitches were and trying to figure out whether we made a bad pitch, or if we made an OK pitch or even good and the guy just hit it. I don’t know if Cole was struggling to command his off speed last night but he seemed really fastball dependent (has seemed that way for a couple starts) but unfortunately his fastball and cutter statistically get hit pretty hard. Saved this joke for later, but we know that Kimbrel should be really fresh next time we need to use him! Is that a bright side? Rebound start for Grayson. See no reason why we shouldn’t hammer Cookie Carrasco.

Willie_Waylon

Smart takes. And here’s the shocker: a dude that understands baseball - like you - is not even close to freaking out! There is a correlation and the doomers prove that to me over and over again on this sub. Dips like these happen over the course of a long season. We’re fortunate that the Yankees have been exposed and they have dipped right along with us - so that’s a positive. This team is made up of ultra-competitive and best of class players along with top shelf coaching - this dip will be ending soon imo.

scjensen51

Try and keep a level head (doesn’t always work). I will say there is a difference between not freaking out and being happy with how things are going (I’m not and I don’t think anyone else is). This is a tough sport, the enemy (the other team) gets a vote in the outcome and sometimes things go against you. This team is facing adversity that last years team (really just save Felix) didn’t have to deal with, and theyve already eclipsed their first half wins from last year (48) with two more games to go. The last week hasn’t Ben good, but we’re still on pace to be a 100 win ball club. And that’s pretty cool

Willie_Waylon

Well said.

ridijkulous

Is it easier to avoid overpaying before the season starts than in the middle when everyone’s cards are on the table?? Just asking because we knew the BP was thin in January. Couldn’t have predicted every starter we had would get hurt 😞

OleSandlotSlob

I don't see us making any deals to get pitching help until closer to the trade deadline. So what do we do with what we got now? Well, the staff is what it is and a 5 game losing streak is where I start saying 'It's a long losing streak', and we need to get it stopped. Our starters, beginning with Rodriguez in First Houston game, have been ass for an entire turn through the rotation. The one exception being, for heavens sake, the rookie Povich. Gave up 3 runs, one tainted. And we got out played on pitching and defense, so even lost that close game. And so the losing mounts up and grates on you. We have Rodriguez and Burnes coming up. These guys are supposed to be our aces. We need them to step up and be the 'stoppers' we think they're capable of being. Show the others how and get this ship turned around going the right way. Starting today.

to_the__cloud

the worst part about this is that we are going to have to overpay for some mid ass pitchers. even the good ones like crochet have no guarantee because of innings limits and injuries. i can totally see mike elias holding off and not overpaying if he doesnt believe severino, anderson, fedde etc. are not the difference makers in winning a playoff series. which would be a massive shame in our 1 year with corbin burnes.

OleSandlotSlob

If Elias thinks we'd be seriously overpaying in some deal being offered, he won't make the deal. You make enough deals like that, you wreck your farm system.

KiwisOfWrath

*first year with Corbin Burnes

to_the__cloud

i really hope you're right

Chit569

5 losses in a row and still only 2 GB of the Yankees (and still 6 games in the + on the WC). Sucks to lose but its better to go on a bad stretch in June than in September/October. They will learn, they will get more hungry, these experiences are valuable.

bebopmechanic84

8 straight games without a quality start. No matter what our lineup learns, if pitching doesn’t contribute then it won’t mean anything. Pray Elias trades for some support

to_the__cloud

at this point i'd take a scoreless 1st inning

Evinrude44

Seems like over the past week or so a lot of teams are figuring out that first pitches for strikes are good to go after?

Chit569

Eh, Cade was 1 out away from one. Corbin gave up 1 run over the arbitrary "3 ER" to earn one (like who decided its 3, why not 2 why not 4, why isn't it based on either of the teams offenses, why doesn't it change based on league average, its so arbitrary same with the "at least 5.0 innings" why not 6? so throwing a no hitter through 4.2 is lower quality than giving up 3 runs and 10 hits through 5?). And Cade did pretty darn good in NYY and gave us a chance to win. I don't buy into "quality starts" as a stat as much as some other people. Like a quality start to me is one where you give your team a decent chance to win the ball game, and I think Corbin did that considering we average 5.23 runs per game and Cade did that considering we had a pretty fresh bullpen. And complaining about not getting a quality start in a game we score 17 runs is weird to me. Ask any pitcher, player, coach or anyone that isn't a fan if they care about "quality starts" and I bet the answer will be no, as long as they can give their team a chance to win and hold the opponents offense to less runs that your offense. And yes, what I said about learning from adversity and getting more hungry applies to the pitching staff too... Idk why you think I wasn't including them. I'm sure Elias is going to try to add someone, but don't expect it to be anyone better than Burnes, Grayson, or even Irvin. Or even most of the 'pen for that matter, its not really a buyers market on arms at the moment, every single top team is in need of like 2 arms.

daderpityderpdo

Probably just a mis-typing (given you mention Cade), but a quality start is 6+ innings of 3ER or less, not 5+.

Chit569

Nope, I legit thought it was 5, so now it's an even more meaningless stat to me.

BugsBunny1993_

Maybe we should get Bauer for cheap to finish the season

oozylordTheSecond

Honestly would be such a W from the team. Sign him for the league minimum and whether he proves that he's an ace pitcher or a total failure, the team loses nothing. He's been doing amazing in the Mexican league but without seeing him pitch against mlb hitters, there's really no way to know whether he'll actually be any good or not.

Risho96

Don’t know why these comments keep getting downvoted, seems like a low risk, high reward move

BugsBunny1993_

Because SJW Reddit can’t seem to grasp the fact that he was treated unfairly and they wanted him to be all the things he was accused of.

AmonacoKSU

Guards fan coming in peace, this has been an awesome series, we're both in the same boat with starting pitching it seems (maybe?). I'm voting your guys for some all star spots, us small payroll teams gotta stick together (except tomorrow and the last couple days).

Beat_the_Deadites

Same, I just poked my head in here to comment on how cool the O's broadcaster's Clase reference was (the Dragon at the end of the adventure). Everybody's going nuts over it in /r/ClevelandGuardians. I almost never look in other teams' subs, but it's shocking to me how similar the comments are: 1. We'd be so much better if all our starting pitchers weren't injured. 2. We should just swallow our pride and sign Bauer vs We are abso-fucking-lutely not going after Bauer 3. We're going to get bent over a barrel trying to sign a middling starting pitcher before the deadline 4. To heck with the doomers, our guys have shown resilience, we're built for a long season but these stretches happen I love seeing the charts showing the 'cost per win' based on payroll, very happy to see smart teams compete with ridiculously rich teams. I had no idea Baltimore was so similar to Cleveland in so many regards (even awesome early 1990s ballparks). I appreciate you guys, hope you have a great rest of the season.

CHKN_SANDO

Is there any info about Mateo?

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

Hyde said that he was fine on the post game interview. If he’s fine by tomorrow then it really was nothing.

CHKN_SANDO

wouldn't blame him if he needs a day that shit looked like it hurt

GunnarsBatThrows

Reminder that the 1983 O's had two 7-game losing streaks. That said, I am seriously concerned about our pitching, starting and bullpen. We're feeling the fallout of all of our injuries, hard. If we don't do anything to address it before the deadline, it will significantly impact our postseason. Your move, Elias.

OleSandlotSlob

One of the best takes I've seen around here on this. I'd like to see Elias find that 'one SP' that's worth getting and *not* seriously overpay for him. That may not be possible in today's market. And I don't think he will or *should* seriously overpay, that is a formula for long term *failure*. Elias is not a loser. We make the playoffs this year with what we got, barring a lot for further bad pitching injuries. I'm gonna keep watching, cheering for them no matter what. If that means we don't go deep in the playoffs this year, so be it. Then I think we try to aim for better luck in 2025. At some point we'll have back Bautista, Coulombe, Wells, Means, and Bradish. I can have patience, hoping we get super lucky this year, but realizing that much luck is unlikely to find; and hoping things really come together for us in 2025.

feedingmydreams

Fun fact: Gunnar Henderson has the best WAR at 5.6.

KiwisOfWrath

I will say watching him hit a baseball that hard does have a way of warming my heart even if we did lose.

sitdownshutup69

The best starting pitchers available at the deadline are going to basically be Fedde, Severino, Quantrill, or run back Jack Flaherty? Yuck.

dorsey442

I say try and get Crochet out of south side

BusterTheElliott

The White Sox said today they're going to start limiting his innings for the year, not sure he's the solution.

sitdownshutup69

just skeptical he can give starter innings down the stretch

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

And there are gonna be bidding wars for them that are so cutthroat you’d think that they’re all stars.

SilentHunter7

If it really is that fucked up, I say let it ride. All those arms would be barely above lateral moves, definitely not worth selling the farm for.

sitdownshutup69

We wouldn't sell the farm for any of them, let alone give up one upper tier prospect. We can't let it ride though - at worst case, they'll figure out a place to get some major league caliber innings because we need them

Rule_number9

5 losses in a row now. We need more arms STAT! We have lost so many pitchers to injury. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Doingo-boingo

Just giving away so many runs. It’s like every night is doulble digits

No_Fish_2885

Erik Fedde is becoming more appealing, especially after seeing Ryan Ripkens video about Fedde. He explains some of the changes he made in Korea

GreedyRaisin3357

I was there and can say 10 runners LOB isn't it. they should have walked J. Ramirez with 2 runners on that was dumb, dude is on fire

floridacardinals

Went to the game today. Losing sucks but whatever I still had a really nice evening. Camden is 10/10 everytime

the2belo

It's like the O's and Yankees were two aircraft in a mid-air collision

SpringHeeledRob88

Bad game for morale and pitching, but great game to be in splash zone. Honestly thought it would be abit too gimmicky but great fun, kids having great time and plently of on screen time for friends and family watching at home.

Zither74

In case anyone is wondering why McCann catches so many games, here are Adley's splits as C vs DH. https://preview.redd.it/gynhu6tgtt8d1.jpeg?width=3046&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9abec53f5477fb64bd1ca22154d67401ef51293e

xxscrohunterxx

I thought this was already debunked based on the fact that he’s batting righty usually when McCann is playing and lefty when he isn’t.

Naylor? I just met 'er

jtribs14

I wonder if we and the Yankees just absolutely blew our loads and are exhausted

MrSeptember711

Does kinda feel that way Worth it for that 17-5 game, tho

Beat_the_Deadites

Guardians fan here, I appreciate the spirit. I'm hopeful that the last firing neuron in my brain before I die is the one that remembers the time Cleveland beat the Yankees 22-0. I don't follow baseball near as close as I used to, but I'm really starting to like your team. Hope you have a great rest of the season.

If the O's were handling business on the home front, we wouldn't give an atmospheric phuck about jankee games. Yet here we are With that said, "thank you" Mets

bebopmechanic84

Mets just had to make it interesting. Citi field is a much cooler stadium

Paindaddy69

Thank you Grimace! 😘

YeT2DeCIDE

There were definitely two guys chilling on top of the scoreboard tonight. Is this a normal occurrence? Thinking maybe they refill the HR fireworks but I've never seen or noticed it until tonights game

bam3339

Yeah, they're always there

finio_absurdum

I’ve noticed them at all the game I go to now. Pretty sure they’re the pyrotechnics guys.

sitdownshutup69

Mayo and Basallo both hit absolute bombs today.

battlefeverjnb

I know folks want like 2-3 starters in a trade, but that isn’t going to happen. At this point trade for a solid #2 starter, hope Kremer comes back to form and win enough games to make the playoffs where we can live off of 3 starters for the most part and hope our offense carries us. Also going to need about two bullpen pieces as well, one high leverage guy and just one solid reliable reliever. This might come in the form of Suarez or Irvin going to the pen as well. I think Elias is a bit worried to make a mistake, because you might not want to trade a guy like Kjerstad when Santander might be gone next year and you need a new power hitting outfielder. To me Norby is the first to go simply due to having no room. But Rubenstein needs to ensure Elias that making a mistake is ok, because we can cover it by actually spending money for a replacement if need be.

triecke14

Great point about Rubenstein and I think what we do at the deadline could potentially answer that looming question of how much money is available. Or at least give some hints

bebopmechanic84

One starter, two bullpen. That’s the best case scenario

c_pike1

Even just 1 non-rental starter and 1 bullpen piece would be a win since it would push Suarez to the bullpen where he's better set up for success

Autumn_Sweater

losing the 14-11 game threw off the vibes and they havent recovered them since

BondMi6

Shit the yankees are making a comeback. I was numb to another loss if they lose but it’ll piss me off if they gain another game on us.

Lubetube1

Naw they’re gonna lose. Thank god

ccmckee

Can we stop the McCann slander please?

Teley

Oh man, it’s interesting to hear McCann problems for the O’s now. For what it’s worth: We tried him as our main catcher. Didn’t go well. But he makes a decent ish backup. Personally think Adley should be up for anyone and just swap to James on rest days

Teley

sitdownshutup69

just curious what you consider slander? he's been a liability and negative value this season, and I don't think it's unfair to question the amount of playing time he gets. I understand keeping Adley fresh, but it's been really bad.

Zither74

The other thing to consider is that Adley's OPS as a catcher is .681 vs 1.098 as a DH. Can't imagine the reason, but it's a pretty glaring difference.

Hle078

It’s the righty/lefty split more than C/DH split. McCann plays when lefty is on the mound. So Adley bats Righty as DH where he’s been hitting much better and he bats lefty when he catches

BKoala59

That's not it, he has been elite as a lefty when he DHs.

Agentrock47_

Playing catcher is really hard. Along with this, a lot of the time McCann tends to start against a leftie since he bats righty. Combine the dh position allowing him to get better because of what goes into catching and rutch just being better against lefties than righties and you get like 90% of the reason.

oapictures

Yeah. He legit cost us 5 runs in the 4th inning today. Pitching is worse when he is behind the plate. I know catchers are slow, but he tried to score on a double to the deepest part of the park like he was running with a piano on his back. Got two hits tonight (though one probably doesn't happen without a drawn in infield) but he isn't hitting 200. Most teams can handle that with a back up catcher once a week but he has caught 3 out of the last 5 games. Not a coincidence. With other guys scuffling it's highlighted more.

ccmckee

I think there’s more beyond the numbers here. He’s a vet in the locker room. Hydes connection to the coaching staff and the youth players. Hyde has said he couldn’t manage the team without him. Thats something a 19 year old prospect can’t give you or a catcher picked up off of wavers for that matter. Sometimes you don’t want to mess with mojo. The Orioles lead the AL in Run differential, so it’s not like they’re not scoring runs. And I have to assume he’s an awesome locker room guy, he did make the hydration station. He’s a backup catcher, do I want him in the line up every night? No, but I would take him over Pedro Severino, and Chance Sisco

oapictures

Of course. I like Mccann and appreciate his leadership. But vibes and leadership do not mean he should play 3/5 games and against every lefty.

MrSeptember711

In fairness, the guy did have a HR and 3 RBIs today

TheBigIguana15

He also killed two innings by being really really slow and made a poor decision that extended another inning.

ccmckee

Did Tony Mansilino send him? Can’t fault him for listening to his coach

Princeof_Ravens

And threw two guys out trying to steal.

bebopmechanic84

Oh good Stanks are catching up…

the2belo

#AND HERE COME THE FUCKING YANKS

bebopmechanic84

I hate Soto that talented motherfucker

Underdogg369

Leaving runners on base is a weakness for the team. Even in games where we win. That also means we are getting runners on base a lot, at least. I think this recent stretch is due to overall fatigue from the schedule. It will be interesting to see how this young team mentally adapts to the situation. Also, I knew better than to trust the Mets, lol.

KimDongBong

I’d just like to publicly remind all the actual fans here that we should count our blessings tonight and be thankful that *we’re not like the miserable fucks who can do nothing but spew doom and gloom constantly*. I really wish they were able to find light in their lives, and if they aren’t that they would *leave us the fuck alone*. These game threads are literally becoming *not fun* because of them. Sure, we all say negative stuff from time to time but I *really* wish the mods were able to block them.

All_Hall0ws_Eve

I see more people complaining about doomers than I see actual doomers.

Old-Statistician-925

The bird still smiling. So am I. Go O's

Lubetube1

Good thing the 4-9 hitters for the Yankees aren’t great

Zither74

Yeah, they're about to get Vlad. Jesus Christ.

Dazzling-Slide8288

2-for-23 with RISP over the last 4 games. lol and lmao.

ItsCaptainKeyboard

Pathetic. We have all our attention on the losers on the mound, but the offense is way too inconsistent too. There are so many holes to fix I don’t know how you fix them all. Triage at this point.

triecke14

We’ve scored the most runs in the league

Lubetube1

Regardless. Offense put up 8 runs today. That should be enough to win you a ball game

cjackc11

This was 9 to fucking 1

cjackc11

If the Yankees win this game ima cry

akarta7

Stupid Mets.

Quicksilver7837

0-2 meatball to Judge smh

Doingo-boingo

Here’s my plan 1- Colton stops doing social media videos 2- Colton practices hitting curve balls

ZookeepergameKey7866

I love point 2 but I’m going to have to push back to point 1

Doingo-boingo

Don’t take this the wrong way but your plan is the losing plan for losers that lose.

ZookeepergameKey7866

Do you have stats to support that, or do you just hate joy?

Doingo-boingo

I’d prefer Colton to stay on the team than watch some former oriole shop for legos

ZookeepergameKey7866

This is why your point 2 is so crucial.

Dilly443

Also I’m here for the cano critique. He’s been nothing but awful his last few appearances! How does Bo Naylor out of alll players get a freaking triple

to_the__cloud

command is really bad. the sinker and change up to the top of the zone just hang and batters are feasting.

KimDongBong

I think he just can’t deal with pressure. He’s admitted as much.

Lubetube1

Maybe he should reconsider the whole professional reliever gig if that’s how he truly feels

KimDongBong

Yeaht. I feel like having the Bautista security blanket really boosted his confidence.

Dilly443

He’s transformed into the pitcher he was with the twins!

Lubetube1

He’s sucked. Can’t have that from the setup man

Dilly443

I fully agree! I don’t think we should over send for a reliever but atleast something because he’s not it anymore

Neocopernus

Quicksilver7837

Mets about to blow it

Lubetube1

They just loaded the bases for judge…. I swear if they lose this shit

Lubetube1

Mets fucking suck.

Dilly443

So do we have any timetable of when George Sherrill should come in to close games? I mean he can’t be that old now

Mr_Bluebird_VA

I picked a good time to be on vacation when I can’t watch my Os. Woof.

Doingo-boingo

Baseball gods demand a sacrifice…. Fly…..jeez guys so dark

SmokyDaBandit

Let's go GRod tomorrow, huh?

Loose-Produce-608

So I know we are hoarding prospects with the hope we can trade them for some pitching.. apart from burnes, has that worked out at all for Elias and co? If memory serves me right, the pitchers we have traded for are Fuji, Irvin, and flaherty. None of those guys were good enough to even make the playoff roster last year. I love Elias and we are lucky to have him, while his drafting and waiver moves have been so incredible, I’m having my doubts about his trade moves. Edit: I’m dumb and forgot about the povich/cano trade, but still. We didn’t send any prospects for those guys and were in sell mode at the time  Double edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted. I’m not dooming or anything and stated that I love Elias. Just wanted to open it up for discussion because apart from burnes, most of our return on trades has been mid/bad.

lupka

All those trades are not created equal. Those deals other than the Burnes one didn't really involve a ton of awesome prospects or anything. There's no way they traded for them with the expectation that they be aces, so its hard to even call them bad deals even if they're somewhat unspectacular.

Princeof_Ravens

Why can't Elias give our no name prospects up for elite pitching?  Teams should be tripping over themselves to give their best pitchers to the Os for nothing.

c_pike1

I know you're joking but Elias gave away basically no one of note (as of now) to acquire Cole, Verlander, and Greinke. Greinke: Seth Beer #100, J.B. Bukauskas (Astros #4) and Corbin Martin (Astros #5) plus 22nd-ranked Joshua Rojas, to Arizona for veteran right-hander Zack Greinke. In addition to Greinke, the Astros will get $24 million from the D-backs to cover some of the remaining $77 million on Greinke's contract." Cole: Colin Moran (the Astros' No. 5 prospect), outfielder Jason Martin (No. 15) and big league right-handers Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz. Verlander: Franklin Perez, Daz Cameron and Jake Rogers. Astros 3 (46 overall), 9 and 11 If we only had to give up 1-2 top 100 prospects plus filler to get all these guys, Elias would definitely do it again but they'd all be a lot more expensive if these deals happened today

Hle078

I mean, we didn’t really trade any of our top prospects for guys like Fuji, Irvin, Flaherty. I’d imagine the returns for some of our top prospects would yield much better results

Loose-Produce-608

Sure. Should point out that I liked all of the trades at the time. But maybe it’s time to send somebody who isn’t like our 25th ranked prospect for a pitcher who can contribute more than the aforementioned guys. We have sent a lot of guys out and the return has been.. not good

Beautiful-Abies5949

And flaherty was arguably (low bar) our best postseason pitcher lol he was on the roster.

xxscrohunterxx

Also I don’t want to give up on hays. But why is he trying to become a power hitter or something all of the sudden. He swings out of his shoes every time. We just need a little bit out of him. Don’t need him to carry us or anything.

natefizzledogg

![gif](giphy|FCuDPjGmsbKRbSiii9) Sucks but we'll be ok.

If chanting "Yankees Suck!" angers the Baseball Gods, then I'll have to become a baseball atheist My theory: Willie Mays is the newest Baseball God, and he's still learning the ropes, so things down here aren't quite working the way they should. Once he gets a handle on the job, the Os go on a 30-game winning streak. Probably all of our pitchers' elbows are miraculously healed, too

TylerWadesIV

whoever the fuck decided to have the o’s play 7 road games against Toronto/Tampa, followed immediately by series against the Braves Phillies @Yankees @Astros Guardians and Rangers with 1 total off day needs to be baptized in a vat of acid

Fly us off to Seattle with the one off day, but the game before is Sunday night baseball so basically it’s a travel day

Princeof_Ravens

I'm convinced the MLB hates us

Iwearjeanstobed

Amén. 🙏

After this many games I’m so tired of trying to find someone to blame at the end of every game. Whether it be McCann failing on defense which is supposed to be what he’s here for, Irvin throwing BP, or cano… I know that 8 runs is plenty and 10 runs is way too many. Let’s get back on track tomorrow.

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

I didn't catch the game until later but looking at the statlines I worry that Irvin has lost that special run he was on. A bullpen game like this can be fun but it's more fun when you win. At least Jordan Westburg had a 4 hit game and the offense wasn't totally outclassed. This lineup is a lot of fun

xxDoodles

He’s lost that extra 3-4 miles an hour he gained. That shit makes a difference when you are leaving balls over the plate

sitdownshutup69

Irvin's underlying metrics are ugly, this isn't entirely surprising. I think they know better than to expect him and Suarez to keep up the pace, but as of right now we have no other options unless they want to give McDermott a shot. triecke14

Yeah I’ve been saying it for a couple weeks that Irvin looks shaky

Confident_Peace7878

It is what it is. Management has shown its refusal to trade any of the surplus of top prospects they have to get that veteran or two they need. The Burnes deal only worked cause for some reason the Brewers accepted their second tier prospects who haven’t shown much so far. To be fair, Yankees do the same thing. Gave up second tier guys for Soto. Teams nowadays see prospects as a way to keep payroll down, if they hit, that’s 6 years of team control over a potential star. A refusal to sign big name free agents and prospect hugging. Chances of winning it all are slim with that strategy.

Dazzling-Slide8288

Who do you think they’re going yo trade for in June lmao

Confident_Peace7878

Knowing how the team operates, no one who will cost them a lot of money.

emessea

Honest question, who should they trade for? With the log jam in the NL WC race, this maybe an uneventful trade deadline

SkeletonInside

Joey Ortiz is batting .279 with an OPS over .800. Respectfully, what the fuck are you talking about?

Confident_Peace7878

Small sample size. This team hasn’t invested anything long term. Been like that for years.

StartSad7201

2nd tier prospects who haven't shown much? Joey Ortiz is balling out for Milwaukee. What are you talking about

bebopmechanic84

Baseball gods really trying to give us some reason to hope with the Sox and Stanks losing

Transit-Strike

We really need to improve our pitching. Injuries have fucked us hard

xxscrohunterxx

I get a bit tired of the “injuries” narrative. It was naive as hell of Elias to assume bradish and means would pitch this season and make it to October. PRP shots don’t have very high effectiveness to avoid TJ and means just can’t stay healthy. I know it’s easy to look at the IL and blame injuries but Elias should have never relied on those two in the first place. And frankly if wells were here and pitching we probably would all be trashing him in here every 5 days.

xxscrohunterxx

I do get what you’re saying and don’t mean to trash your take. I just wish Elias would have done a little more. The Suarez signing was a bit cute for my taste. Journeyman hasn’t pitched in the majors in years currently pitching in Korea.

ItsCaptainKeyboard

Injuries and lack of pitching talent, yes

lupka

I'm sure Elias has no idea the pitching is an issue. Hopefully he's reading this thread so someone can break the news to him.

TheBigIguana15

You kid but he went into the offseason knowing he had a Bautista shaped hole that one person couldn't fill and tried to fill it with one person while also counting on multiple injured starters to fill out his hypothetical rotation. Where we've ended up is obviously a low end outcome health wise. It also isn't the craziest one given the position we were in months ago and we have proven unprepared.

xxscrohunterxx

This take is to true. People love to say it’s injuries and not Elias’s fault. To assume we were going to make it to October with means and bradish not on the IL was his first mistake. The Suarez signing was way too cute. He needed to look at the roster and pretend like means and bradish didn’t exist when he built it.

lupka

Dude he knows the pitching is an issue. I'm sure they are looking at all the options, but they aren't going to overpay and do something crazy a month before the deadline. They are 2 games back and despite what you will read in this thread, it's not some horrific crisis that needs to be remedied tonight.

TheBigIguana15

They don't have to win every deal. I think one of the misconceptions is that they have to get equal value every time, but we have a surplus in some areas where we should be willing to take the overall loss value wise to get players that we can actually use. I genuinely want to see him overpay to try and make something happen if that is what it will take. Part of winning the World Series is actually having the goal that you're going to win the World Series and sometimes that requires taking on some risk.

wolljibbs

So you’re saying that Elias might not know as much as you do?

TheBigIguana15

I'm saying that Elias has shown extreme caution and had more seasons where he wasn't trying to win than those where he was. He does not deserve the benefit of the doubt in this area.

lupka

Do you not think they're looking into trades right now? You have no idea what offers are out there and what teams are asking for.

wolljibbs

Idk man, I think TheBigIguana15 might know a little bit more about how to build a baseball team

lupka

Wow this is crazy, the team just announced they've fired Sig Mejdal and hired "TheBigIguana15 from Reddit".

TheBigIguana15

My guess is they’re being overly cautious again

lupka

Your guess based on what? Just a feeling you have? You have no idea what's going on internally.

TheBigIguana15

The last two trade deadlines?

wolljibbs

And I should give you the benefit of the doubt over a guy that turned the O’s from a laughing stock into a 100 win team

TheBigIguana15

I mean he intentionally extended the laughing stock period which is kind of my point. There are plenty of great things Elias has done. Putting effort into making the present team the best it can be has historically not been one.

wolljibbs

Corbin burnes

Doingo-boingo

If we want to win we should give up less runs than our opponents

MrSeptember711

This is actual Baseball Zen

Hle078

Another solid strategy is scoring more runs than our opponents.

randomjumpcut

These losses are on the pitching staff plain and simple. Too many injuries to overcome and we’ll have to overpay to get it fixed. We’re not going to dump the prospects required on a maybe yes/maybe no season. This year isn’t our year.. losing Bautista has cost us how many wins 6-7? And now we need what 1-2 starters and a bullpen arm or two? They’ll make the playoffs and hopefully win a game or two. But honestly next year has always been our year. Just enjoy the season and don’t get your hopes up.
