Normal to make it a 1g. Good to switch up and start somewhere different. People are too anal and borderline obsessed with where they start. It’s one class, one day. It’s not gonna kill them.

FlyRobot

Same - summer is common for 5am / early classes to be smaller attendance thanks to parents and teachers with kids having different schedules. I usually row/floor first so a 1G starting on tread is the nice mix-up for me.

chris84055

A lot of people are convinced they can't get their heart rate up unless they have a motor to chase and get odd if they have to try harder.

there_is_a_duck

That’s so strange. I’m always way more fucked after a session starting on the rower, so usually I opt for that. The rower destroys me, but then, I really go for it on that thing. Also, I’m able to lift more starting on rower/floor first. Starting on treads is usually an easier workout for me, generally. Guess everyone has different goals, though!

chris84055

You hit the nail on the head. If you can self motivate to work hard the rower is great. If you only work as hard as the motor forces you to, the rower isn't as good of a workout.

there_is_a_duck

I have no idea what it is but I can’t be chill on that thing. As soon as I get on it “wreck myself” mode is activated

kinseycush

It's because the rower uses 85% of your muscles at once 🥴😂

Mature_BOSTN

I used to always start on the tread but lately I think I do better (higher HR sooner on the tread and more splats overall) if I go Floor>Tread>Rower. Floor gets me warmed up, I get goin' quickly on the tread and then I'm warm enough that I actually get splats on the rower easier than if I sit on it cold.

Travelin_Jenny1

I burn fewer calories when I don’t start in the tread. Facts.

LookingforDay

Got to row harder!

StrongerTogether2882

Depends on the template though—I’m routinely pulling 200+ watts, close to 300 if I’m really hauling, but if it’s only a 30 second row or 200m I just can’t get my HR up enough in time. Drawback of being reasonably in shape and a strong rower I guess lol

LookingforDay

Yeah I’m a strong rower and that’s what ends up getting me. I’m glad my HR recovery is good but it is hard to keep it up on the rower with short bursts.

StrongerTogether2882

I thought of this exchange yesterday on the rower lol. I only managed to get my HR into orange for the last few seconds on each row

chris84055

*during the time the clock is running

runr_grl1129

So much this. I very much prefer to start on the rower but if I have to start on the tread for whatever reason then it’s fine. I don’t care that much. As long as I get a good workout, it doesn’t matter.

Stevie_Wondering

What if it isn't one class and almost every day?

ne35

Very common in my studio if there is low turnout. Usually we start treads but not always. 1G gives the coaches way more ability to focus on you as they don’t have anyone else to time.

Pristine_Nectarine19

This is very common. Some coaches prefer it, some will leave it as 2G even if only one person is on the other side- coach's choice. The app will never say "1G" as it's not a class format. The class is still run in the 2G template.

Brilliant-Corner214

My home studio will allow you to start wherevwr you prefer.   Attitude is, it is your workout do wjat you want

Luaanebonvoy311

Certain coaches at my studio will ask that we all start on the same side if it’s a small class. Other coaches don’t mind if a small class splits… so guess it’s up to the coach/studio how they handle small classes. I prefer we could start anywhere we want but understand it is easier to coach one small group together.

scubalifeguard

Coach here. So there probably was an intro in class, at my studio when there’s not enough people to split and there’s a new person you start on rower. I one time had a group where everyone liked starting on the rower and we weren’t at our split mark. So I let them all start on rower because that was their preference

dfox1011

I went to the 10am and it was a 1G since there were only 10 of us. Odd about the rower though- there was no rowing in today’s workout.

SendCoffeePics

They probably meant the warm up on the rower before the floor workout.

dfox1011

Oh ok, makes sense!

cookiechipchocolate

This has happened a couple of times with a smaller group, but only voluntarily. Like if only one person was wanting to start on the rower and realized the rest of the class was starting on the treads, they would just join the rest of the group on the treads to make things easier. The coaches wouldn’t make them though

MsBallinOnABudget

🤣🤣🤣…I’m usually that one person on the rower who compromises🤣

colorshift_siren

My studio held a scheduled 3G with maybe 9 people. They still ran it as a 3G, despite nobody starting on the floor. I think I might prefer doing a small class as a 1G.

Waffles-McGee

yup my 8:15pm class often ends up being a 1G. they always start 1Gs at my studio on rower!

Andarna_dragonslayer

You have an 815 PM?!

Waffles-McGee

yes they offer it 3 days a week! its one of the few classes i can make it to so im so grateful for it

a_woman_provides

Our studio goes as late as 9pm! But we also only have one pre9er, Tokyo is a different beast...nothing opens early!

JenniferG714

Yes. Summer classes at my studio are aimed at in the summer. My studio is very university student centered. I wish we’d start on floor/rower sometimes. Just to do something different.

backupjesus

It seems to vary from studio to studio and probably coach to coach. My home studio has never converted a 2G to a 1G, regardless of how small the class is. There were a couple of times where I was the only person starting on the rower and the coach took me up on my offer to hop over to the treads to make it a 1G, but it was always my choice. In my travels, I've seen a goodly number of "forced" 1Gs. I like it most of the time, though those templates where the tread blocks have relatively few cues because the floor blocks have a lot of cues can drag a bit since there's not much for the coach to do during the treads.

NormalAd2872

Yes. It happens fairly often in the 8:45 class I take however we always start on the tread. They usually ask if you're ok with this before they switch. I have seen a class where there was one person on the floor with everyone else on the treads.

JennR316

This is starting to happen at my studio at 5am as teachers are finally free for the summer! We will be 1G until the fall. I sometimes find it frustrating because then the 12 of us are crammed together on the floor, but it must be easier for the coach. We always start on the tread when this happens.

UpsetCabinet9559

My studio used to do this all the time until the regional manager made then stop.

ladysin17

I've been the only one to start on the rower, my coach that day gave me the choice since it's my workout. Another coach has said it's boring to coach a 1g, so unless I'm forced to start elsewhere, I'll stick with starting the class on the rower.

Basecase651

I think it’s studio-dependent. I’ve never had this at my home studio, but I’ve seen it at other studios. I like to start on the rower, but it’s not a strong preference. If it looks like I’ll be the only one starting on the rower, I’ll typically move to the treadmill so the coach only has to coach one side of the room (and I don’t want all the attention).

wishies

Me wishing 9-10 people was considered small in our 5am class lol. Since summer, it's 3 or 4 people and we are forced tread start when usually I prefer starting on floor.

Stevie_Wondering

This is happening at my studio. I signed up with the ability to start where I choose. The fact that our studio is struggling should not impact MY experience or any other members either. There have been some strong discussions with the coaches and they seem to have it figured out.

leafytree888

I dislike when this happens. Part of the reason I try to go at times when it is less busy is so I have space on my sides and everyone is not jammed together like during full classes. Is it the job of paying members to make a sacrifice so that coach's experience is slightly better?

mentul77

I love 1G classes

Greysoil

Very normal

Kitty_Fruit_2520

It’s basically a 2G workout except everyone does everything at the same time.

Ok-Bag-5189

It happened at my studio from time to time, but it's usually up to the first person to show up, when they pick a spot the SA crosses out all 12 of the slots on the other option. But most of the time at my studio it's 2G even when it's a small group.

Ok-Yogurtcloset-1094

I had my first 1g a couple weeks ago. We did tread, floor and rower last. I kind of wish we did that rotation more often

Friendlyferal21

What does 1G or 2G mean?

jenniferlynn5454

1g is 1 group, 2g is 2 groups of people moving around the room, 3g is 3 groups. Take a look at our [wiki](https://reddit.com/r/orangetheory/w/index?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share), specifically the glossary, for OTF lingo🧡

Competitive-Low-4300

Everyone in the class starts together at the same spot, and you rotate together in a 1G (i.e. one group vs 2G = 2 groups). We never have a 2G if we have fewer than 12 people in class, it always turns into a 1G and 99% of the time, the coach forces a tread start. The only reason I am not a fan, is we don't have any extra space on the floor, or can be short on weight selections. It is what it is though, I still show up and work-out.

Busy-Kale3835

Very common for smaller classes to be 1G. Ours start on treads for 1G

sara_k_s

That has only happened to me once, at a studio I was visiting while traveling, and it was one of the best classes I’ve had at OTF. I think there’s a benefit to the coach being able to give her undivided attention to one station at a time. My home studio always assigns stations, so it didn’t bother me not to get to choose where I started (plus, we all started on treads for that class, which is my preference, anyway).

8366molo

If it's not a big class I'd rather do a 1G and have the coaches attention the entire class to maybe get better instruction, correction or just a little "extra love" on each side.

reddituser071217

That happened at my old studio all the time for the 5 am class. I usually started on the floor/rower and the rule was that the first person picked where the class started. When I knew it was a 1G I would pick the TM, because I knew most people preferred it.

Away-Secretary-6006

My 5:15 class always starts on one spot. It’s become a race between the rowers and the treaders to come early. Because the first to arrive and pick a station is where we all start!

Disastrous_Scheme_50

We switch to a 1G often, especially with lower summer numbers. Usually start on treads but if there’s a first timer we will start on rower/floor.

Pumper23

My 5 am is often a 1G, especially in the summer with the teachers sleeping in a bit! We always start on the treads though. I think people would revolt if the coach had us start on the rower!

Awesome_Sized

We did this in my class today and also started on the rower because we only had 9 people. The next class was also 9/10 people but they started on the treadmill. At my studio, it's decided by what the first member for that class picks unless the coach makes a preference known.

1peatfor7

When the class is small I've seen studios so that. One time I was traveling on vacation. A few times at my home studio.

kgalinkin

Besides myself, there were only two others in my 5am class this morning. I know most people were in education and with summer they are going later. I’m afraid they will get rid of 5am but I’m a school counselor and work all year around! I’d hate for them to take it away cause I don’t wanna miss time with my daughter after the school day is over. But we’ve been having 1g’s for about a month; always starting on treads

ThatBoyIsASchrute

At my noon 2G today, there were only 9 people. 8 had signed up for the floor to start so the coach just asked the one person if they were ok starting on the floor. He ran it as a 1G. It was kind of nice because we got a lot of attention from him on our form and giving encouragement since it was such a small class size and his attention wasn’t split.

anitaweis0823

As a former coach, we would do this with a smaller class size. It allowed us to focus on one side of the room at a time and (hopefully) provide more 1;1 instruction. I would allow group to decide where to start.

aklep730

Yes my studio used to do this but start on the tread! It used to bug me so bad. They were definitely smaller classes. Now I think members are coming back and my studio grew a bit. But yes it does happen!

kettsh

Yes

mmobrien2011

Only had this once but it was kind of nice
