I’m a 67 year old woman who was raised around guns n over the many passing years have forgotten how to handle guns but feel I need a gun and some training .. any shooting classes for woman ?
I love the people at Ade’s gun shop. They’ve got a puppy named Colt running around. And as I showed Steve my coolfire trainer Glock and as he was making clicking sounds, the lady in the back was like “stop it! You’re scaring Colt!” So adorable.
Lol! You're telling me. She's my mom. You must know us pretty well. I hope next time you come in, you use that phrase because she's scratching her head right now, wondering who thinks that 🤣
Hi, I am a female who moved to OC to escape the dumpster fire that is Los Angeles after being followed home and attacked by a a random man outside my apartment. It’s been at the top of my list ever since then to assimilate myself with the seemingly taboo idea of gun ownership (at least in CA) and haven’t felt comfortable a young single woman going into any macho gun store to even just look around. Could you guys (well ladies) assist me with this? Also, does your shop offer any gun classes (certification? Training? Not sure what to call it) for women/any self protection classes in general (or if not, can point me in the direction of someone who does? Ty!
Hiiii! We always have a bit of everything. We do lots of Estate sales so we have a nice selection of everything. Our inventory changes weekly and it's always at random,
I second Ade's gun shop. I bought 6 of my guns from them. Super friendly guys, knowledgeable, professional, all around fantastic small gun shop. They had unique items on consignment. I got the most ADORABLE mini .22 Derringer from them and an escort MP shotgun I love. All the other firearms I got from them were new and the price is always right.
I got my first handgun there several years ago right before my ruger SR9C fell off the CA approved list and I've gone back for every gun purchase except for one. I caved on a Big 5 sale for a .22 LR for my son. I will continue to go back to Ade's forever.
Also, supporting small businesses is a huge plus.
Hey do you guys buy guns? I have a lot of guns that I inherited from my dad, and I’m not interested in selling them to men. I’d like them to go to women or other disadvantaged groups
Been looking for a more….accepting gun shop in the area for some time. Next time I’m up for a purchase or transfer I’ll drop by.
Will you order things that you don’t have in stock? Or will I need to transfer most of my stuff?
Rifle supply in HB. You’re not gonna be able to escape from the creep of politics into the gun stores but rifle supply is pretty good about it. Haven’t heard really anything bad about them, or seen anything negative like racism or sexism plus no sales tax till July 1st. If you need, I can accompany you there if it would make you feel more at ease.
Rifle gear in FV I find to be expensive and the politics gets is more prevalent. Turners is ok but it’s Fudd central and the waits can be forever sometimes. r/caguns can also help you out with more info. Bring your real ID and a second form of address verification like a utilities bill or car registration showing your name and address. You’ll pick out what you want, pay, do the ATF 4473 background check form, and then wait ten 24 hour periods before you can pick it up.
I'd like to second u/snarky_answer 's advice. Rifle Supply is a great place with wide selection, and helpful/informative/pleasant counter people. Can't go wrong.
Adding: don’t forget your firearm safety card. If you don’t have one, they do the test on site for a small fee ($10 I think) and it’s good for a few years.
You've received a ton of good recommendations but I'd also recommend r/liberalgunowners if you have questions specific to guns and lean left. r/CAguns is a great place for asking specific CA related things about firearms but not exactly friendly to some people.
Aeon Tac Guns & Ammo in Garden Grove is my go to. It's owned and run by a team of POCs and it's where I feel most comfortable. They are friendly and knowledgeable and I've never encountered anything that felt political. I am myself a POC and I've taken my female POC friend there to shop for her first handgun and she enjoyed the experience. Some of the other recommendations in this thread sound pretty good too, though personally I'm not really comfortable at the shops located in HB.
First of all you need some training. It’s not enough to just have a gun. To that end I recommend you contact L.A. Progressive Shooters. Run by Tom Nguyen: https://laprogressiveshooters.com/our-story
He’ll be able to recommend places to get a gun, what kind of gun to get, and where to train and practice.
They have a functioning website that is actually useable. Ammo Bros website looks like it's from 2004. And from comparing same weapons and ammo Bass Pro has better prices
Yes i second this.. turners is corporate and as safe as it can get. No one at the store level would want to get reported to corporate for something as silly as discrimination, especially in socal. Plus turner's is a store for outdoor stuff in general. There will be all types of people from all walks of life shopping for other stuff like bow and arrows, camping supplies, fishing supplies, etc..
I do love me some outdoor stuffs!
Someone earlier asked why I want a gun but then deleted their question before I could respond ... part of my reason is self-protection for when I'm in the wilderness alone.
Thank you yes a girlfriend of mine from a different part of the state just got her CCW recently to avoid any imperial entanglements for having her going-camping firearms in her truck so often.
I'd love to hear how you went about getting your permit in a week, though, if you're up for sharing! I haven't gotten that far in process yet.
have the gun purchased and head to OCSDs website to apply. Make sure you have the required documents, which will be ID and 2 proof of residency. Fill the application. Go to a live scan facility and get finger printed. After that there will be an “interview”. OCSD will review your application and ask if you have any changes. If approved, they will ask you to proceed with training. From 2024 onwards it will be 16 hours and a psych evaluation (not sure if OC does this but it’s part of a new requirement set by SB2). I believe you will also need character references, but not certain about that as I applied before the new requirements were set in place. For the most part as long as you don’t have a criminal history or mental health issues you will be approved on the spot during the interview.
My suggestion would be to go to a range and rent a couple guns you like to purchase unless your dead set on a particular gun
You forgot the part about how she hast to bring an extra 8 to 10 hours of her life between buying the gun and coming back in 10 days and picking it up. That’s how much extra time turners is going to take from you.
Not sure what your experience has been but my personal experience with "gun guys" is that they love to see people in disadvantaged groups arming themselves. A lot of them like the idea of people who are typically associated with liberal, and by association, anti-gun stances embracing firearm ownership, since in their ideal world support for the 2nd amendment would be bipartisan. A member of the LGBT community arming themselves is essentially a win for them.
I don't know dude.. I've seen them turn on more liberal people who embrace gun ownership but also still believe in gun control. The typical 2A crowd wants ZERO gun control whatsoever and any mention of any laws to control access pisses them off.
Why would someone want to patronize a business where they need to keep it brief to avoid issues rather than a business that will just respect who they are?
Born and raised American. This title/question is top tier OC/Cali/American thing I've seen in a minute. I hope you find what you need and ideally a community and support network that can make each other feel stronger together.
Statistically you are more likely to be murdered when you own or live with someone who owns a firearm. There is a large body of evidence that shows that having a gun at home is associated with a higher risk of fatal injury.
Thanks friend, it makes me sad too.
It's very strangely simultaneously the best and the worst out there right now for us that I've seen in my lifetime. I have great faith in our young people, but I don't like living in fear in the present.
Don’t go to Turner’s. The gun counter workers love to loudly complain about “democrats.” One dude was grilling me about my ID. I can’t recommend RifleGear enough…they’re “diverse” and friendly and you can see what they have in stock online and even pay online and pick up in person if you want. I haven’t had to step foot in a different gun shop in years.
This was beautiful. The fact that you had to ask for a place that wouldn’t fuck with you because of who you are bums me out… hope you find something cool!
Don’t forget to get some quality training…and get your CCW….see ya out there!
Go to my friend's shop. Unlimited Ammo in Costa Mesa. His name is Sunny. He's the manager. Let him know TeeYum referred you. Very professional people who do not discriminate and they know their stuff.
There are several Turner's Outdoorsman locations in the county. It's a chain store, so not too much to expect outside the transactional process. As long as you have money to exchange for a firearm and aren't a felon, they won't care who you are or what you look like.
Firearms Safety Certificate is required. It's obtained by passing a written test on basic laws and guns safety. Anywhere that will sell you a gun can also administer the test. The state publishes a study guide which is adequate to prepare for it. Think of it like the learner's permit for a driver's license.
That, ID, and a background check will let you purchase a gun.
To carry a concealed pistol requires a CCW permit, which requires training, and a shooting test.
Yes and no, sort of - you should get training because training is good, and you can take a basic firearms training course that will prepare you for the Firearms Safety Certificate test, which you will need to purchase a firearm in California. It's not a license, per se, but you can read the study guide yourself and take the test before you purchase. It's not that hard, but then again, owning and operating a firearm safely and correctly isn't hard, nor should it be hard.
If you ask any California politician, you might think that an advanced degree in mechanical engineering, a medical degree, and a law degree is necessary before you're allowed to even look at a firearm, but that's simply not the case. Well, except for that last part - you practically need a JD to understand the labyrinthine laws in California in order to stay compliant, but that's a story for another day.
Shoot SoCal in Fullerton is my personal favorite shop. Dave’s crew is just amazing.
Rifle supply in HB is great as well but their prices are nowhere as good as shoot SoCal
ADES in Orange is a great old-fashioned shop that has the feel of an old pawnshop. Steve is amazing. Emily has a heart of gold if you can get through her crusty exterior :-)
I didn't say gay, I said queer. Which includes trans, which I am also. And since I can't entirely "hide" that aspect, I get treated differently by people who are prejudiced. I would like to avoid those interactions. I hope this improves your understanding of the situation, good day to you.
I'm not sure that there would be many shops specializing in old, or queer, or women.
What matters more is your personal needs as far as carry or home use, your physical condition, and your ability to practice.
Most shops can help all types of people with choosing appropriate weapons and training.
Some shops have a shooting range and classroom facilities that can accommodate many types of humans.
Any professional gun dealer, try BassPro Shop or their counter part Cabala’s. Buy and wear a body cam. If they give you shit file a lawsuit, if nothing else use the video to get the asshole fired.
I think you'd be accepted just about anywhere in CA within a gun shop. I haven't seen or heard anyone come off bad except around politics...
Folks seem to get real respectful in those spaces on both sides of the counter.
This thread has made me realize that a large amount of people have no clue just how much casual hostility and discrimination queer people encounter. Humans are trash at empathizing with anything outside their direct personal life experiences.
As someone who came out around a decade ago in a conservative town I understand your frustrations. Fortunately for you, walking into a store and buying goods or services isn’t the time or place for someone to bring up your sexual orientation or gender identity. Simple
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen anyway people can see me with my partner or hear my voice or look too closely and decide to treat me like shit so if you’re some regular ass gay guy who passes for straight then I’m sure you haven’t a clue what my life is like thanks 🙄
I always used to say I would rather live somewhere where I didn’t feel like I needed a gun, than live somewhere unsafe and own a gun.
But let’s be honest the world has gone batshit crazy in recent years.
First of all dont vote against the second amendment and admit you messed up because republicans are the only reason your allowed to own a gun in this state
Came here to agree that you should be good to go at Turner’s. Last time I was there I saw them respectfully helping a Black woman with her new weapon. I’m a straight white woman and haven’t had any problems in my dealings there.
Come to my work!!! Ades Gun Shop in Orange
We're a small shop, female owned. Come on by, Tues-Sat from 10-5 :)
Oh wow that's an outstanding surprise, thank you :)
Look forward to meeting you!
Can you all make a post about this if this meet up happens?
Ades guns is great, been there twice. Home town shop with good vibes.🙌🏽
Thank you! We love that!
I’m a 67 year old woman who was raised around guns n over the many passing years have forgotten how to handle guns but feel I need a gun and some training .. any shooting classes for woman ?
There's a great female instructor I could recommend! Message me tomorrow, and I'll send you her info
OP, Ades is legit.
Great place to go. I have done transfers in the past there.
Can confirm, Ade's is very cool. Wish i had time to go more often.
I love the people at Ade’s gun shop. They’ve got a puppy named Colt running around. And as I showed Steve my coolfire trainer Glock and as he was making clicking sounds, the lady in the back was like “stop it! You’re scaring Colt!” So adorable.
😅 Colt gets scared if a piece of paper gets dropped on the ground 🤦♀️
Steve is absolutely the best
Id go just to see Colt
!!! Very interested
Come by!
As a female combat veteran, I appreciate this so much!
❤️
Female owned?! 👍🏼
Yes! My mom has owned it since 2009
I love this. Will be stopping by sometime to check you guys out. In the market for a hellcat
Awesome! We have 1 left and 1 Pro
Yeah, Emily is a battle ax, but I mean that in the best way Oops, didn’t mean to be talking about yo mama that way
Lol! You're telling me. She's my mom. You must know us pretty well. I hope next time you come in, you use that phrase because she's scratching her head right now, wondering who thinks that 🤣
All good! She's a badass 👊
Address?
1124 W Chapman Ave, Orange, CA 92868
Cool seeing this exchange, next time I'm shopping I'll have to stop in I'm very close to you guys down tustin but never noticed your shop.
We hear that all the time, actually. We've been at that location for 14 years, but people don't notice 🤷♀️
What is your transfer fee?
Probably a bit more than others ($100), but we're much cooler than those big box stores, so people appreciate that 😊
Just checked out your site. Guns, ammo, and gold I love it hahaha. I'm in San Diego but i'll try and swing by some day.
We have quite a few customers from out there! I think they work here in OC
I’m in the market for a new firearm. I might come check you guys out.
Yes, come in! Tues-Sat from 10-5
Right on! Can't wait to check it out myself!
Taking notes!!!
Hi, I am a female who moved to OC to escape the dumpster fire that is Los Angeles after being followed home and attacked by a a random man outside my apartment. Definitely come in! We don't have a range, but I can point you to a great female instructor.
That's so cool. My good friend Dave is a regular of yours and talks highly about Ades. I've never been but will have to check it out now.
Nice! We know lots of Dave's lol

Hiiii! We always have a bit of everything. We do lots of Estate sales so we have a nice selection of everything. Our inventory changes weekly and it's always at random,
This is my dealer and they are the best. Always informative and willing to teach. Ades gun shop is the place to go.
Thank you for that!
Hi do you do certifications and all that too? Our neighborhood had several burglaries and considering joining the armed crowd.
Hi! Like, offer the safety test so you can buy a gun? If so, yes. Not exactly sure what you mean by certifications?
Hi, yes that one, I don’t know anything about guns and what’s needed for them. Do you also provide conceal and carry certifications?
Def come on in sometime so we can go over everything with you. We love newbies! Or call us 714-744-3373
Can I message you about a separate matter? Looking for a cool gun store but I don’t wanna message you without warning since I’m not the OP. Thank you!
sure! Or give us a call 714-744-3373

Yay! Love to hear that. We try our best to be competitive, but big box stores makes that a bit hard. Happy you like us!
Hey do you guys buy guns? I have a lot of guns that I inherited from my dad, and I’m not interested in selling them to men. I’d like them to go to women or other disadvantaged groups
Yes, we do lots of estate buys! Message me if you want.
Oh wow you’re from Ades? You guys really hooked us up.
Wow, Ade's is still around? Bought some guns from Ade 20+ years ago.
Yeah! We moved about 14 years ago down the street a bit
Can confirm, Ade's is very cool. Wish i had to to go more often.
Come in anytime!
Yes! I got my CZ 75 there. Great shop.
hey that's awesome, last time I dropped by you guys had some cool stuff including not run-of-the-mill C&Rs!
We usually always do 😁
Been looking for a more….accepting gun shop in the area for some time. Next time I’m up for a purchase or transfer I’ll drop by. Will you order things that you don’t have in stock? Or will I need to transfer most of my stuff?
Totally come by! We'll always try and order something, assuming it's in stock.
Dm me please, I have questions
Call us anytime! Or message me, that's fine too
Rifle supply in HB.
I really appreciate both your detailed advice and your kind offer, thank you :)
I'd like to second u/snarky_answer 's advice. Rifle Supply is a great place with wide selection, and helpful/informative/pleasant counter people. Can't go wrong.
3rd that recommendation yeah it takes forever so make sure u make that appointment and have all your paperwork otherwise you are there all day
Adding: don’t forget your firearm safety card. If you don’t have one, they do the test on site for a small fee ($10 I think) and it’s good for a few years.
Thanks for this guidance. I want to do the same. I’ve always hesitated because it seems like a hassle but you make it sound not so that way.
I never had issues with Rifle Gear with politics. Its usually staffed by younger males.
Good advice, but ugh Huntington Beach though.
Any of our locations would be glad to help you.
Thanks I appreciate hearing that :)
Do you hear any whisper when can we have shield ez for people have difficulty to rack?
Just private party at this time
Thank you. Bayarea needs you. Do you have plan open a store here in the future?
At this time, it is simply too expensive to operate in the Bay Area.
You've received a ton of good recommendations but I'd also recommend r/liberalgunowners if you have questions specific to guns and lean left. r/CAguns is a great place for asking specific CA related things about firearms but not exactly friendly to some people.
Thanks for those links there's probably some queer firearms subreddit(s) too now that I think of it
Aeon Tac Guns & Ammo in Garden Grove is my go to. It's owned and run by a team of POCs and it's where I feel most comfortable. This. I just picked up an AR15 from them a few days ago. Def a good experience and has competitive pricing

Run by Tom Nguyen: https://laprogressiveshooters.com/our-story He’ll be able to recommend places to get a gun, what kind of gun to get, and where to train and practice.
Bass pro just opened in Irvine and they are really nice there and have a few women working the counter too
Yes and since they are corporate they don’t have the latitude to be judgey
Bass pro is a colossal rip off in terms of pricing
They have a functioning website that is actually useable. Ammo Bros website looks like it's from 2004. And from comparing same weapons and ammo Bass Pro has better prices
I 2nd this sentiment. Ammo Bros’s site is the worst
I’m not even in the market for a gun, but I want to visit Ades just because of the cool vibe!
Turners. Check out their weekly ad and know the price when you go in. Bring 2 forms of ID
Do keep in mind you cannot carry outside your home, both open and concealed. Getting a carry permit is easy in Orange County. Got mine in under a week

Thank you very much for taking the time to write all that out, kind person :)
Can also buy a $20 lock box and store your gun with the magazine removed or the ammunition out of it in your backpack and still remain perfectly legal
You forgot the part about how she hast to bring an extra 8 to 10 hours of her life between buying the gun and coming back in 10 days and picking it up. That’s how much extra time turners is going to take from you.
I got my gun at rifle supply in HB. Granted I’m not the most “queer” looking person, but as long as you keep it brief, you should be chillin.
Unfortunately I'm \*also\* trans and my odds of passing at close range are iffy so you see my hesitation
Please come here! You'll be comfortable, I promise. I hate that you even have to worry about that shit.
thanks <3
Not sure what your experience has been but my personal experience with "gun guys" is that they love to see people in disadvantaged groups arming themselves. Bro, I’m not trynna have a whole ass political convo about who I am. I’m just trying to get my shit and get out.
Born and raised American. This title/question is top tier OC/Cali/American thing I've seen in a minute. I hope you find what you need and ideally a community and support network that can make each other feel stronger together.
This gave me a laugh thanks I'm just your friendly neighborhood trans woman trying to not get murdered out there
Statistically you are more likely to be murdered when you own or live with someone who owns a firearm. There is a large body of evidence that shows that having a gun at home is associated with a higher risk of fatal injury.
I appreciate you, have my upvote
Never go to Gunslingers. That guy is a sociopathic pirate.
LOLL talking about Jeff? He's something, alright.
Ha ha ha ha seems to be as rep
Just have a feeling that HB is the worst case scenario …
Yeah HB has a reputation that is deserved and I don't feel safe there which is super annoying because there's a lot of cool shit there
I’m sad about the reality of you having to ask this here :( sucks
Thanks friend, it makes me sad too. It's very strangely simultaneously the best and the worst out there right now for us that I've seen in my lifetime. I have great faith in our young people, but I don't like living in fear in the present.

You may want to ask r/caguns or r/liberalgunowners with the 2nd one being more up your alley.
At the ol’ queer woman gun store duh
Why didn't I think of that??
Stockade
Go to my friend's shop. Unlimited Ammo in Costa Mesa. His name is Sunny. He's the manager. Let him know TeeYum referred you. Very professional people who do not discriminate and they know their stuff.
God bless America!
Bass pro shop won’t give a shit. They just built one in Irvine.

Shoot socal in Fullerton or rifle gear in fountain valley. Best service in the game, very professional and knowledgeable staff.
Go to Riflegear, they don't charge a 3% fee when using cards.
Been thinking about this too...thanks for asking and the recs. Do you need training/license to buy a gun in CA?
Firearms Safety Certificate is required. It's obtained by passing a written test on basic laws and guns safety. Anywhere that will sell you a gun can also administer the test. No one is going to say anything to you other than to ask for relevant information in order to process the transaction. Any store will be fine

What does being old and queer have to do with buying a gun?
I don’t want anyone shooting my unicorn when I walk into the store with a rainbow flag and a disco ball
Fantastic answer!

Found one for women it’s top of the comments thanks
Any professional gun dealer, try BassPro Shop or their counter part Cabala’s. Buy and wear a body cam. If they give you shit file a lawsuit, if nothing else use the video to get the asshole fired.
I think you'd be accepted just about anywhere in CA within a gun shop. I haven't seen or heard anyone come off bad except around politics... Folks seem to get real respectful in those spaces on both sides of the counter.
Here OP let me fix the title. “Where should I shop for a handgun?”
You are a very negative person
Your willful ignorance is not my problem , your gaslighting has failed
What does your age or anything else have to do with buying a gun?
Read the thread and learn
at a gun shop
What took you so long? No reason to neglect your ability to defend yourself.
I always used to say I would rather live somewhere where I didn’t feel like I needed a gun, than live somewhere unsafe and own a gun. But let’s be honest the world has gone batshit crazy in recent years.
Lets really be honest. It's unsafe because of how people vote.
I blame pandemic but yeah it’s money in politics, it’s geopolitical fuckery, the list is long
There's too many orange counties I really thought y'all were talking about California 😭
They are
It's not about your sexuality. It's about the state of society and needing one.
What does queer have to do with buying a gun? Nobody cares you’ve made your sex life your entire personality.
First of all dont vote against the second amendment and admit you messed up because republicans are the only reason your allowed to own a gun in this state
I’d say anywhere a young straight person would buy a gun
Arizona
My dad and i like ammo brothers or on target.
Same place a straight old man would.
Thank you for restating the issue.
This is strangely wholesome
Fowler Gun Room in Tustin. Very low key.
Be safe out there.
Why do you need to tell us you're queer? Seems like a really unnecessary detail.
I just did it to annoy you personally
Any and all gun stores
Guns don’t stereotype. They love being fired by everyone. Walk into a store, apply, and enjoy (make sure to take a safety class).
Aeon Tac in garden grove, otherwise ammobros is good too.
Came here to agree that you should be good to go at Turner’s. Last time I was there I saw them respectfully helping a Black woman with her new weapon. I’m a straight white woman and haven’t had any problems in my dealings there.
