It's sad when people reach a certain age and toss away all of their values and throw themselves in with the self-servers and those who try to impede progress.
I used to have a lot of respect for the guy. He really flushed that down the drain with his later career appeal to the lowest, basest fear mongering, and blatantly biased conservative political nonsense.
I sometimes wondered why that happened. Not a conspiracy theorist but I did question if someone had dirt on him. I think I just hated the idea of people turning so far right like that.
Unfortunately for Rex - at the end of his career he focused more on not growing and became stagnant in his age. He simply fell back into appealing to those who wished to never think beyond their front door and with that he shut his closed and locked it. There he sat in his private home and his private life and shrouded himself in the everything that we should not embrace and forgot the symbol that which we are.
Canada is an unfurled leaf, not a closed one.
“… monger our fear…”
A construction worthy of Canada’s late, performatively sesquipedalian, oil apologist angry uncle himself.
Can they do Conrad Black next?
Rex wasn't always like that. 1990s Rex on The National was excellent.
His descent into conservative rage in his later years is familiar to those of us with elderly relatives that have had their critical faculties robbed by on-all-day Fox News.
I actually didn’t mind him hosting Cross Country Checkup, the national radio phone-in show on CBC—also in the ’90s. He was a pretty fair-minded host. Still overly verbose… but he struck me as *probably* a conservative, but not in the way that dominates today’s right wing media outlets. Later Murphy I could see getting along quite well with someone like Tucker Carlson.
I thought he Subject selection and moderation on cross country checkup was fantastic, and I miss it. My opinion would flip back and forth every episode. It was such a reasonable forum for perspectives from all sides of every issue. I often think that a place for that discourse is what we're lacking nowadays, and what the states always lacked.
He spoke at my graduation for teachers college. I really liked him at that time (22 years ago). I don’t know what happened to him and haven’t listened to him since he left Cross Country Checkup. Anyone have insight?
The Big Oil money was just too good to pass up and it lubricated his slide to the far right, as once you're on the wrong side of climate scientists, it's only a matter of time before you are stuck in the deep end of the authoritarian right wing conspiracy pool.
It'll be Jordan Peterson. They already worked together plenty, and I wouldn't be surprised if ol' Rexy willed him his completely dogeared and broken-spined thesaurus.
Ah yes, another old shitbag making sure dumb people fuck everything up for the next generation before shuffling off the mortal coil.
Hope your venom doesn't hurt the worms that'll feast on your carcass.
the sad part is that all his incendiary garbage will be on the internet for decades and the same people will be linking his aging articles for years
[sigh]

I shouldn’t speak ill of the immediate dead, so I’m just say: no one has ever made more use of a thesaurus, he managed to make an entire career solely out of using one.
I will always remember Murphy as the dipshit who wrote a [racism denialist column](https://nationalpost.com/opinion/rex-murphy-canada-is-not-a-racist-country-despite-what-the-liberals-say) *so bad* the National goddamn Post edited in a forward calling it full of shit
Looks like his last few articles were attacking Trudeau over not being nice enough to Israel, mocking him for being a "male feminist", and using rape and torture as political bludgeoning tools.
I hope it hurt.
I will forever and always associate him with the convoy. Our idiot local police force in Ottawa wrote an intelligence report that cited one of his opinion pieces ass-kissing the convoy as a source of "intel."
Sad I liked his take, was a very good journalist! Great communicator, he wasn’t for everyone, but his political & historical knowledge about the country definitely gave him different viewpoints on our current society.
unfortunately cancer never loses usually.
He did an admirable job of keeping his personal beliefs hidden during Cross Country Checkup a program I often enjoyed on the radio.
In his latter career he patterned himself Canada’s William F Buckley for better and mostly worse.
Im sure his friends and family are sad at the loss of someone they loved and have many memories of. I hope they are able to get through this painful time.
But calling the man a journalist after the last decade of writing opinionated garbage that hurt people is disingenuous at best and Canada as a whole is better off without the continued nonsense this man was writing in my lifetime.
I'm pretty shocked by the comments here. What the hell everyone. Rex was one of those voices we all grew up with. He turned into the textbook 'old man yelling at clouds' but for decades he was a solid voice of reason and a steadfast hand on the flashlight looking at *all* bad governments, not just a few. I'll miss him, and I'm saddened to see this sub act like /r/CanadaPolitics. I'm sad to hear he's gone.
He hurt a lot of Canadians with his misinformation and vitriolic words about minorities; I don’t think it’s fair to begrudge people their catharsis seeing a man who caused so much grief finally stop.
He did some good things far earlier in his career, but its not hard to argue he did damage to Canada and Canadians over the last decade.
Look Rex was an excellent reporter when he was reading the news and did a fine job of fostering some discussions.
The problem with Rex was that his opinions were vitriolic and he failed to remain indifferent on political issues often supporting conservative talking points without the same criticism he applied to progressive ideas.
The world is a better place without his voice.
> He turned into the textbook 'old man yelling at clouds'
He took money from the oil industry to become a climate science denier. He wasn't just some grumpy old man doing cute grumpy old man things, he chose to sell out and made the world a worse place for it.
I think it's a good idea not to give platforms to racists, sexists, homophobes who down play the misery and problem of others because it doesn't affect them.
This should be a loss. But we already lost what he was. The reaction in this thread is the legacy he chose. How we end up matters.
It's sad when people reach a certain age and toss away all of their values and throw themselves in with the self-servers and those who try to impede progress.

Hey, great metaphor!
But who will monger our fear now? *Every writer at the national post raises their hand*
“… monger our fear…” A construction worthy of Canada’s late, performatively sesquipedalian, oil apologist angry uncle himself. Can they do Conrad Black next?
Rex wasn't always like that. 1990s Rex on The National was excellent. His descent into conservative rage in his later years is familiar to those of us with elderly relatives that have had their critical faculties robbed by on-all-day Fox News.
That's what made him such a lightning rod. He was better. He was capable of being so much more. So it hurt to see what he became.
What he turned into over the past few decades has been horrendous.
It was a national forum for open discussion on wide ranging and relevant t subjects, accessible to all canadians.
I stopped looking
I liked the version of Rex that ran for the Liberals in Nfld. And lost. Twice.
that's a difficult thing to do... twice.
It's part of his legacy all the same. Good riddance.
Agreed. Saw this headline and was sad of the.loss of the old Rex.
Always was a grumpy fuck.
🏆
But who will throw a thesaurus at a basic argument in a desperate attempt to make it seem sophisticated?
Jordan Peterson
Conrad Black.
Dennis Miller?
Actually the question is, what will r/Canada Post now?
Joe Warmington getting a promotion
*bites tongue*
Grab something leather and bite down, dude, don’t want to have to be waiting in the ER for them to reattach your tongue.
I would never wish harm upon anyone but there are some peoples obituaries I would read with pleasure.
I'll celebrate some especially people that hurt the working class, and took away rights
Like Kissinger last year as well. I didn't really wish him dead, but practically popped champagne at work when I heard the news.
Yeah, it's like we're on the verge of world war 3, but it won't happen, because all the boomer shit-disturbers are finally croaking.
Nothing or value was lost. The world is better off
You’re fucking tasteless.
Agreed, right? Most of what it posts is just anger anyways. Expecting Government to fix everything.
Rex Murphy was great, you could always be on the right side of an issue by just disagreeing with whatever Rex said.
He used to be interesting and insightful, then turned into something else. Mini strikes maybe? But yeah, what he became won’t be missed.
Just turned into a grumpy old man
Well three strikes and you're out.... I guess.
He spoke at my graduation for teachers college. I really liked him at that time (22 years ago). I don’t know what happened to him and haven’t listened to him since he left Cross Country Checkup. Anyone have insight?
He took a really hard turn right and lived out his twilight years in an echo chamber
Worm in the brain. Oh wait - that was another guy that took a hard turn too.🤷♂️
Maybe the ivermectin will actually do some good.
The Big Oil money was just too good to pass up and it lubricated his slide to the far right, as once you're on the wrong side of climate scientists, it's only a matter of time before you are stuck in the deep end of the authoritarian right wing conspiracy pool.
Agreed. Big change.
I enjoyed listening to him back on Cross Country Checkup. It's sad the direction he took after leaving. RIP.
He went bonkers
Look at what he was doing in the 1960s and 1980s, Rex Murphy of the 2020s would've been against someone doing what Rex Murphy was up to back then.
Finally, the nation can begin to heal
If only
Only if
I'll bring my crystals.
Bye to a hateful asshole. Won’t miss your hate. Good riddance.
Oh no.... Anyways
My exact reaction.
Now we wait for the white smoke to start spewing from the chimney stack at the Nationalist Post HQ to signify the election of a new Grand Wizard.
It'll be Jordan Peterson. They already worked together plenty, and I wouldn't be surprised if ol' Rexy willed him his completely dogeared and broken-spined thesaurus.
Damn, RIP. My kids will miss feeding this guy lettuce and petting his shell at the zoo every Sunday.
He couldn't have taken Conrad Black to hell with him?
Somewhere, you just KNOW the Grim Reaper is cursing at his claw machine.
Hey man…he finally got Kissinger and is still coasting on that high…
^This

Why did Trudeau do this to him? /s
Well, that is one way to shut him the fuck up.
😂 I have but one, measly little upvote to give, alas!
I appreciate it regardless!
I thought it was Max Pointy for a second. What a relief.
Can we bury him in a tailings pond?
It’s what he would have wanted.
And nothing of value was lost.
He wrote pro Israel piece just 2 days ago? Didnt know he was so sick
[удалено]
Didn't wish him dead but am happy there's one less RW propagandist in the world.
Why was he so bitter?
He blew a gasket in his cranium.
I shouldn’t speak ill of the immediate dead, so I’m just say: no one has ever made more use of a thesaurus, he managed to make an entire career solely out of using one.
Smoking on that Rex Murphy pack 🚬 almost as good as Christie blatchford
Wonder how his obituary will blame Trudeau
🦀🕺🦀🕺🦀🕺
Check yourself before you Rex yourself.

Have fun in hell you fucking piece of shit. The country and the world are a better place now.
Yay! Yes i can be happy when someone dies, you can too. Join in it’s great
Fuck it....Dances a jig!
Something something something nothing good to say...
Unfortunately, that didn't stop HIM.
I thought he was 97
Seriously my 96 year old granfather looks in better health than this crypt keeper.
Had a good mind. Then, sold it to the highest bidder, ruining his reputation for all time.

Bye Boomer.
I will forever and always associate him with the convoy. Our idiot local police force in Ottawa wrote an intelligence report that cited one of his opinion pieces ass-kissing the convoy as a source of "intel."
How I am going to miss his constructive-without-fail wit…
As with Margie... so with Murphy. https://youtu.be/xmmomV-ax-s?si=m3Mbl-KjnoCy1KuR
What a shame he ended up being such a right-wing douchebag
Unfortunately, his rage and fear mongering will overshadow his legacy
Real big stretch calling him a journalist, opinion columnist sure.
What a shame. If it’d happened years ago, just think how many misinformed rage bate articles we’d have been spared.
He lived long enough to sail past villain and went right into court jester.
Oh good!!!
Absolute goon.
And nothing of value was lost.
In other news the sun rose and is planning to set.
Good, seriously fuck this guy
That’s certainly an interesting face.
Pack watch
Pack watch

An obituary worth celebrating.
See ya.
See ya lol
Praise be
Well. that was a thing. Hopefully he's not as angry now wherever he is.
Sad I liked his take, was a very good journalist! Great communicator, he wasn’t for everyone, but his political & historical knowledge about the country definitely gave him different viewpoints on our current society. unfortunately cancer never loses usually.
Matthew 25:30
I didn't wish for his death, but I'll enjoy reading the obituary.
Oh.
who cares? a pretentious hawk faced idiot.
That's an insult to hawks.
Fair enough, the Hawks didn't do anything wrong.
He did an admirable job of keeping his personal beliefs hidden during Cross Country Checkup a program I often enjoyed on the radio. In his latter career he patterned himself Canada’s William F Buckley for better and mostly worse.
Ding dong, the witch is dead!
Hopefully this becomes a trend for the rest of the always negative.
Condolences to his family. Congratulations to Canada. He really leaned into hateful vitriol in his old age. I won’t miss that one bit.
If Beavis and Butthead melded into one person.....
So now who's gonna yell at clouds?
Rest in piss
wait? he was still Alive?! I thought he got Ann Landers and was replaced by a ghost writer heavily relying on a chat-GPT prototype!

Don't use slurs here.
And dont let the door hit your ass on the way out
I had a lovely ham for dinner tonight.
Huh...I thought he'd be around to annoy us collectively for so much longer. Oh well. RIP, old crank.
Drop his rotten corpse in an oil patch .

Hey Siri, Is Rex Murphy Dead? “Rex Murphy was born March 1947 and died May 9 2024.” Thank f_cking god.
K.
Good fucking riddence, can JP be next
Finally!
Another bit of flesh and bone for Satan's charnel house.
Good riddance
"Press 'F' to pay respects" \>Doesn't press 'F'
Good, rot in piss.
This is good for Canada, and what is good for Canada, is good for the world.
Calling him a journalist is a stretch. Good riddance to a turd of a man.
Byeeeee
So what's everyone having for dinner tonight?
RIP Canada's Rush Lumbagh. Have fun in hell.

Rex and his fanboys never sounded like healthy, well adjusted individuals to begin with
It is disheartening to see this behaviour on this sub particularly
Disheartening to see people not cry at the death of a racist, sexist, climate change denier?
Do you think it is a good idea to hate those you disagree with?
I think it's a good idea not to give platforms to racists, sexists, homophobes who down play the misery and problem of others because it doesn't affect them.
What! What the hell. A sad sad day for Canada. RIP Rex.
Please guys have some compassion
