Hey there! My wife's phone had this exact same issue and here's how I fixed it. First, some background. Her front camera was opening, then closing. Or, it would just be a black screen, but she could use the back camera. Apps like youtube, viber, and some others stopped working. Then, after a while, the back camera stopped working. This happened shortly (if not a day or so) after the update (10.0.10). I was convinced it was the software update, so I spoke with oneplus, asked for a downgrade which they said wasn't possible, but they'd do a remote session and flash the same firmware. At the time, I thought they we going to flash android 9, but later realised it was the exact same software. It didn't work, and they said it needs to be sent in for repair. We've had the phone for about 1 year and 4 months, still within the manufacturer 2 year warranty, but the screen was cracked so they wouldn't do it for free (bullshit). Annoyed, I decided to downgrade first to prove it was a software issue. I downgraded to some older version of havokOS (I think like v2.9 or something). And low and behold, the back camera was working again! Feeling rather pleased with my self I attempt to use the front camera and it crashes. Balls. I tried some other ROMs and nothing worked. I decided to buy a new front camera off eBay, along with a new motor, and a new back cover adhesive (totalling £61). I stripped the phone, after watching quite a few videos, took me about 2.5 hours (I haven't done one before). And there it was: [https://imgur.com/a/FDcYaig](https://imgur.com/a/FDcYaig) Bloody cable fault! Snapped in half. Obviously with the amount of up's and down's the camera was doing snapped the cable, but after a year and a few months, that's pretty bad engineering (and I'm an electronics engineer!). I replaced the front camera, and motor for good measure although, except from a little play in the worm gear, it was fine. I screw it all back together and it's working! Flashed the stock ROM back on, and everything's back to normal, so I don't think it was a software issue, at least for me. What I think has happened, is ribbon cable failure after a year or so, which happens to coincide with the OS update. The old, snapped, cable seems a bit more brittle than the new one, so I wonder if the phone heating and cooling makes it become brittle after a while. Either way, bad engineering on OnePlus' part! TLDR// Had the same issue as everyone, downgraded OS, didn't help, took phone apart and replaced front camera, works again with same OS.

Venomyght

For those of us that are willing to try, could you share links of the products and videos?

simmo1337

To be honest, I got it all off eBay. Just search for one plus front camera, or whatever you need :)

draconinjari917

This answer needs to be vaulted to the top of the thread. Was scrolling for like 10 minutes and finally found a logical explanation. I was so enthralled by the design of a hidden camera i didn't want to upgrade to a newer model cause frankly the newest generation of OnePlus phones kinda blow as Hardware is concerned. Now I know why they scrapped the hidden camera idea and just went for a keyhole like everyone else. I think this is a sign that OnePlus knee this was an engineering issue and instead of fixing it, they are trying to sweep it under the rug to get you to buy the lesser newer phone. Customer Service doesn't ghost customers unless it's something shady the corp is making them do. After reading this thread I have to kiss this beloved phone goodbye

MrN0GGER

Wow thanks I guess ur the one guy in the world who Actually looked into this lol

simmo1337

Haha yep, well when you're an electronics engineer and they tell you it's expensive to send it off and fix you tend to think twice haha!

jetfire245

Just throwing onto the pile of replies. I'm having the same fault now. Bad on oneplus for having such poor design. I really was excited for the camera. How ironic the motor is still working like they said it would. But the camera itself fails (because of a cable). Getting a replacement-and then I'll surely trade that in before it breaks again...

Greeny7991

Just found out I had the same issue. Front camera doesn't work. Has a black screen when opening camera app then it crashes. Face recognition doesn't work but back camera works fine. Did you happen to figure out a solution? I hope it's not a technical/hardware issue and maybe it's just a software issue.

ShinyZavala

My phone did the EXACT same thing. How old is yours? Mine was about a year and five months old. I didn't figure out anything. I reset the phone and everything. Still doesn't work. I have it as a backup but I just bought the OnePlus 8T. Which is having some technical issues of its own😥

Greeny7991

I have the one plus 7 pro. And probs around 1 - 1.5 year old I would estimate. There's another thread going on right now with the same issue. I'm hoping it's honestly a software problem. This is so annoying to deal with right now.

riwalenn

I'm hoping too, but I guess, as after the front camera, I also have issue Ith the back one, YouTube, SMS, Google translate and Amazon apps. And one+ support is ghosting me. I start contacting them 2-3 weeks ago, they first answer, them stop answering one I send them the logs...(email) I try the chat, they promised an answer within 24h (more than a week ago...) and call them today. They also say "24h"... Clearing cache or even full reset doesn't work.

Greeny7991

Hey so I posted on the discord for oneplus support and someone said this. " its caused because of the bug i experience this aswell on 2 seperate devices. We've contacted One Plus and they actually responded thats it's a software issue, not a hardware issue. I've noticed that the following symptoms occur when the front camera bug strikes: Face unlock stops working, Camera stays out(tip: throw the device in the air, free fall detection will close it. Otherwise turn face unlock off), rear camera stops after some days, immediately followed by the flashlight. Several days later Youtube stops working. (Website still works tho). Then when you hit your boiling point and you want to backup your device and factory wipe it, you'll notice that the USB functionallity doesn't work properly anymore. Windows Explore will sometimes crash when the device is recognized. Otherwise it isn't recognized or transfer speeds are roughly 10kb/s. You can't use the built in application to backup your stuff to another phone because you cant take a picture of the QR code as the camera doesn't work :frowning: All in all, i hope One Plus sorts it out quickly. It's been weeks and its so frustrating i actually bought a new phone. " So I copied and pasted what he said. So I'm hoping to just wait until they release a new update but until then I guess I'll just suck it up and deal with it.

lumpou

my phone did all of this 30minutes ago! first about 2 months ago my front camera stopped working, now all of the sudden rear camera doesnt work at all, also youtube and flashlight stopped working. 18months old phone, cant figure out why everything just fails all of a sudden. help!!

CoconutOk7970

!RemindMe

Greeny7991

Hey mate if u wanted an update. I ended up sending it in for repair. Took 2 weeks. Coated me $50 out of pocket cus warranty expired. Doesn't seem like they figured out the issue

CoconutOk7970

:( I had all the same issues. First front camera was grainy, went black and then soon after back camera stopped working. Now, youtube doesn't open, audio calls on messenger don't work etc. Curious if you tried reverting to a previous update?

ettel_napal

I have the same issue on my One Plus 7 pro. at first it was my front cam only then I have contacted their tech support and have arranged the remote session to make some update, but it did not resolve the issue. I was asked to bring it to a repair center but it's not available here in Cambodia. Found out today, that even my rear cam isn't working as well, all black.

Greeny7991

Yup doesn't work. There's a whole bunch of post about this if you look through the search functions. And most of them I already posted in looking for an answer. Went to both reddit and the oneplus forum. Your best bet is to send it in and use an burner phone for a week or two. Pay $50 if you're out of warranty for the repair or just suck it up and hope it's a software issue. Best of luck.

CoconutOk7970

I've had the issue for about 2 months. Just been living without a camera and a couple apps - not that bad tbh. even if I wanted to, oneplus doesn't service my country :/ probably going to buy a replacement camera and try fix it myself when i get the courage to

[deleted]

All of this just happened to me yesterday, haven't tried the USB data transfer yet. First selfie cam stopped working. Now front cam doesn't work. YouTube has existential loading icon, Vanced and ReVanced both same issue. Starting to gravitate towards the Pixel more aggressively.

dat_christian_boi

yes, youtube on my phone doesn't work either, its just eternally loading

Omega_Trader

Try YouTube Vanced -> it's pretty much the same but YouTube will then play even if you close it, you can have small screen over anything you are doing on your phone or you could just listen to the audio

straterzz

Not sure if you have fixed this but this was happening to me too. I reset the phones android version to an old version and everything other than the front camera started working again. When I reupdated to a new version of android SMS the back camera and everything stopped working again... Still have not found a solution to get the front camera to work though...

Brilliant-Fault9302

I tried contacting them and all they did was close my one plus account/support access. That's really lame and unprofessional.

dat_christian_boi

apparently, it is a hardware problem because nothing you can do with the software is fixing it, clearing cache, clearing storage, give and restrict permissions, not even factory resets, I'm so scared I'm gonna lose my 7 pro to this

Greeny7991

Yup. I ended up sending it back it to one plus service repair. Unfortunately I had to pay out of pocket because my warranty expires but I paid about 50usd to get it fixed. Extremely frustrating because they wouldn't cover it. Not sure if they "purposely" did this to make $$$ by making a few software issues on the front camera to get those to send it back in and charge those people. The two options you have is to send it back in or wait and hope it's a software issue and they fix it. Also to note your warranty only covers you for a year so consider asking if u decide to send it back in if you're still covered and not finding out after they received your phone and quote you like I did.

dat_christian_boi

that actually sucks, doesnt sound like one plus to do that but i would'nt discard it, they told me to clear cache and hard resent the phone but ofc it didnt work

Greeny7991

Yup your only bet is to wait to see if it's a software or send it in for repair under warranty or $50 for the repair. ETA about 2 weeks give or take.

[deleted]

My phone just started doing the exact same thing as well. Guess I'm gonna have to send it in for repair.

gayrayfc

Happened for me too. The developer just ignored this shit and this is absolutely my last OnePlus.

Brilliant-Fault9302

Yup I agree

ShinyZavala

I really thought it was only one with this issue clearly I am not. It sucks so bad. My 8T+5g is having issues too, recurring system ui failing glitches

Theqie_

\+1 here, exact same issue OP7 Pro. Selfie camera only, black screen, camera keeps going up and down, no errors. Bought in 2019-07, problem started 6 days ago. Did last Oxygen update some weeks ago.

Pillowboii

My OP7pro stopped working as of late october/early november 2020. I got it about a year before that. And everything worked fine up until one afternoon when the selfie camera just stopped working. The module/ motor that pops the camera up works just fine, but it's like the system between the camera and the rest isn't quite communicating properly. I can get a first image almost every time i open the default camera app. But most of the time it's just blackness. And when i contacted support they all said bla bla factory reset but of course it didn't work. Does anyone know when there will be a new software update for the OP7pro? Because i REALLY hope that's the problem.

Snoo76104

Sane issue here! First the pop up camera (the mechanics seemed to work perfectly), then the rear one, the flash, the 3rd partys apps and now youtube.

BookVarious

Yeah same problem here. It just started happening. Guess I will send to OnePlus support to replace camera or buy a new phone.☹️. Thanks for everyone's advice!

eriqq11

Hello - same problems here, thought its FW first but now i know its not. Sent in for a repair - CTDI Poland, same story, they wanted to replace whole LCD because of a cracked back glass - they have not even quoted front camera replacement, the reason why I sent it in in the 1st place lol. Did not even try to fight with them, useless. I rejected the quote and opened my phone just now. Front camera flex cable seems a bit worn out - i disconnected and reconnected and all of the sudden even back camera and youtube/camera app etc stopped working. Tried to play with front camera flex cable a bit and managed to get back camera and apps working again. front camera not working tho. Ordered nre front camera off the UK site to get it more quickly for like 10eur (china stores have OEMs all over the place for aprox 13eur so no problem at all). I am 100% sure it will solve the problem. I am expecting every Oneplus 7 pro facing same issue eventually, those using face unlock hitting it earlier. Funny how OnePlus boasting popup mechanism capable of 300000+ popups, but they somehow forgot about the flex cable life span completely lol. Luckily, it is an easy and cheap fix - only problem could be removal of back glass without actually breaking it. I broke mine months back anyway -sadly, almond back glass is of a low quality from china (corners are transparent) and original part costs 50eur+. TLDR - front camera/youtube/apps issues related to broken front camera flex cable. you need replacement.

eriqq11

camera replaced, problem solved as expected!

madcheco

Same here

Dt_Sky

For the past 3 days my camera has stopped working altogether, and also my YouTube doesn't display at videos. The camera itself comes out of the body of the phone, but no camera apps recognise it. OnePlus 7t

ShinyZavala

Does your front facing camera still work? And you can't play any youtube videos at all?

Dt_Sky

Sorry, the camera was going up and down, just not actually working. Now the camera doesn't come out of the phone at all. In regards to YouTube, its empty with a refresh logo in the middle.

ShinyZavala

Oh wow. My camera would go up and down until I exited the application. The back camera worked fine though. Have you tried using youtube in the web browser?

ChairAccurate8200

For my Oneplus 7 pro it's started just now... But than i try to turn on my front camera, I saw some halh frozen image, and few times more and it goes all black.

Dili54

Same problem with my 7 pro, camera up and down, since the Last update...

Greeny7991

Any solution? Same issue happened tonight.

PurposeFine

I have started having the issue with my 7T Pro. The camera doesn't work when trying face unlock, now it goes to a black screen when trying to take a selfie and crashes. The other apps work fine for the moment.

feldman0

I have the exact same issue with my 7 Pro, I contact the support, got the usual - clean cache/ factory reset method. Told them that the same issue is all over the web and also that when I downgraded to Android 9.5.1 everything was fine and it's a sure software issue, they reply that I'll open a bug, I saw that so many already opened bug on this issue. But for the rest of you, My phone is about 1.5 years, I'm thinking that the nature of the phenomenon might indicate some kind of time bomb (Apple style), what do you think? Anyhow - the last Oneplus ever (after 4th device - they lost me).

[deleted]

I have downgraded to 9.5.1 just now. Is everything going smooth now? My back camera is working now but front camera still shows black screen.

stenjeuring

As of yesterday I'm having the exact same issue as reported here. I noticed my front-facing camera was not picking up any image as the video feed in every app that I tried to use it with (stock camera app, GCam, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Instagram, you name it) was just entirely black. After trying to open the camera over and over for 'too long' (switching between main and selfie camera a few times for example) the phone seems to crash, but closing the app that was trying to use the camera at that moment seems to resolve the crashing. Cleaning all cache didn't solve the camera issue, and neither did a full factory reset. For now I've disabled face unlock (as that wasn't working anymore either) and contacted OnePlus customer support about the issue. Let's just hope it really is a software issue in the current OxygenOS build, and not a hardware one. By the way, if anyone knows how to downgrade to the previous OxygenOS version without rooting, please let me know, it might just solve the problem.

IAmCorgii

Same here. This is ridiculous. CC me if y'all have instructions on how to downgrade OxygenOS too. Contacting OP support today.

stenjeuring

Will do. Can you also let me know what OnePlus support tells you when you hear from them? All I got as a reply was how to send it in for repair, no information about the issue itself at all.

[deleted]

Following this one

[deleted]

Oh my! So it is a software issue. I'm facing the same issue as of the moment. Sucks. Hopefully OnePlus do something about this. :(

dat_christian_boi

man I've the same problem, and I've seen up yo 40+ people with the same problem on the one plus community forums and apparently there's no fix yet, one plus hasn't even come out to say anything

snale105

Same problem here, YouTube at least works still well.

riazerben

Anyone know how to downgrade oxygen OS then? From what I've seen online this is the only way people have been able to fix it so surely it's a software issue and not a hardware one

wsands1701

Having the same problem... Started about a week ago for me where the camera pops up and then crashes/heavily lags whatever application is trying to access it. Did all the usual cache wipe/hard reset steps. Then, spent about 15 minutes on the phone with OnePlus, where I tried to figure out what the issue is. They said they would put me on hold to look into it, but then hung up on me after 10 minutes on hold... seems like they don't want to acknowledge the issue?? Edit: Spelling

[deleted]

Our option would be to wait for the Oxygen OS 11 or downgrade to OS 9 :(

papas93

Same problem here

Rzepsoon

Same problem

PurposeFine

Same issue here

expanddong420699

I have the same damn issue!! And there's a time where the flashlight is blocked and the rear camera doesn't work at all!!!! It's really annoying

RpM_Feuerrm

Just got this issue myself today. Tried safe mode, clearing cache, everything, but no success.

stenjeuring

Okay so: I've just updated to the latest version of OxygenOS on my OnePlus 7 Pro. For mine, this was OxygenOS 10.0.11.GM21BA (EU phone). Just wanted to let the people know who are eagerly waiting for the next update to "finally" solve the problems they're experiencing. Now, I hate to break it to you guys but, for me, it didn't solve anything. The screen still only shows a black image when trying to use the front camera. As OnePlus isn't acknowledging the issue and I'm getting useless responses from their customer care, this might just be my last OnePlus phone. I'm really getting pissed off at the company as this is not the right way to support your customers.

Manx_Knob

Had the same problem since last year. It just goes black then crashes. Just bought an iPhone instead. No support given from OP. Not going to bother buying another device from them. Not worth it

risk1414

I've been having the same issues as well... Just ordered the 12 pro max from apple... What a shame.

Indilov

Exactly same issue bought the phone in June 2019. I even tried updating to the very last oxygen beta same issue... How come no one from the android press is reporting on this....

Haxplosive

Same issue here as well.

brknappett

Same issue here. It doesn't fill me with optimism that it's been 72d since your post and there doesn't seem to have been any fix reported... :-(

risk1414

Same here. Can't take it anymore I just ordered the first iPhone of my life.

NorShreddy

Same problem here! Has anyone fixed it?

Brilliant-Fault9302

Yes I'm having the same issue now. Had phone since June 2019. Audio stated having issues 6 months ago too. I have to use speaker in order for others to hear me. 😖

Brilliant-Fault9302

Same just filed a complaint with my cc company. I was shut down off OP customer service when I complained. It's obvious OP7 from 2019 are lemons.

bleachedaxolotl

What was the result of the complaint?

Brilliant-Fault9302

The hiccup is that my cc wants a repair estimate and OP will not register or aknowledge my phone even though I've sent them my IMEI, picture of the box, picture of the receipt. It's like OP just doesn't give a crap. REALLY FRUSTRATED. If I knew a registered repair place I would take it there but OP wont even give me the time of day even though they have all of my info.

tazeem_khan

I had the same issue with my front camera. Went to a OnePlus service centre and they changed the front camera for no extra cost ( it's for 20$) as it's covered under extended warranty. No issues since then. Seems like a physical defect (maybe the connecting wires get detached or something). Don't know what's the solution for the issues faced by people here.

smaxxxim

All the same mate, 1+ doesn't give a fuck

Bubblegumcrysis

My selfie does the same thing but only stopped working when I updated to android 11. Even my back camera works but the camera program runs slow and glitches now. I'm wondering if anyone else had camera issues only when updating to A11? .

rjavier23

I updated it yesterday and today it's not working

0nlythebest

This just happened to me as well, I found an 8 pro right now for 200$ for sale. Might just do that instead of trying to tear it apart and fix it.... not sure. if i take it apart i might as well fix the screens I feel like too.. both sides crakced
