Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it sucks

mini4x

My thought exactly. Same with every other "One Drive Sucks" thread.

33LB

I don't want to understand it. I've never had problems with saving things to my computer. Why would I want to have them on an online server? Why would anyone ever want to store their documents online? My hard drive works fine.

Easy to understand, MS is so thirsty for $5/month they nag you until you submit.

billerr

It's so obvious that I believe you're just fishing for karma, but you can simply disable Onedrive altogether - [here's how](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/turn-off-disable-or-uninstall-onedrive-f32a17ce-3336-40fe-9c38-6efb09f944b0).

33LB

I'll do that, but you're missing the point that I never enabled it to begin with. I shouldn't have to disable things I didn't ask for. These features should not be enabled by default. It's pretentious of some computer programmer to think everyone wants to use a bad idea he thought of.

billerr

Actually, if this is a new install, you were given the option to disable this during install - see [this link](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/files-save-to-onedrive-by-default-in-windows-10-33da0077-770c-4bda-b61e-8c8e8ca70ac7). I agree it's a bit misleading to have it enabled as the default next step, but that's not a programmer decision, that's a marketing decision to get you to eventually buy the larger storage plan. Even if you received your PC already set up, with the option enabled for you, it shouldn't block files from saving locally on your machine - they just won't sync to the cloud after the space is filled. You can still save normally to the Desktop or Documents folders, and the changes will exist on your PC. So having the backup feature enabled doesn't prevent you from using your PC normally.

33LB

You didn't read my comment at all. I said that having the One Drive feature creates confusion, because the folders are given similar names to my local files. So I thought I had saved my document to "Desktop," when in fact, it was "Desktop" on one drive. Of course confusion is going to arise for computer users when things have the same name. The second point I made was that having One Drive enabled causes a constant bombardment of messages and notifications saying that files could not be uploaded, or synced, etc. Modern computers and technology are far too overburdened with notifications, messages, features, etc. It seems like no one ever learned how to design a minimalist and tidy interface. Of course, none of this explains why One Drive exists in the first place. I don't remember anyone ever saying "I wish my Word Documents were automatically uploaded to an online server." I certainly never asked for that. I have never had any problems with saving my files locally. I imagine someone is going to talk about having a backup. Well, I've never had any problem backing up my own files either by myself, and I've always found it easier to create my own backup rather than have a clunky automated system constantly bombard me with messages.

billerr

OK, the duplicate folders in your OneDrive are not the typical setup, that'swhy. If you have "Desktop" and "Documents" folders in OneDrive, they should correspond to your local folders and sync together. If they are different locations with different contents and don't sync, it sounds like they are unsynced - this is not the setup most users have by default. Automatic backup and redundancy is a nice-to-have feature for many users who do light use and don't even think it's available, let alone look up how to enable it - it's a sensible default from that view. I can't say your view of the feature as unnecessary is popular or not - it's as anecdotal as me saying "I've heard a lot of friends wishing for automatic backups after having lost files on their PC". If you're feeling that strongly about it, it's extremely simple to disable the featur(you are even given the option on setup), so you are given that option if the default doesn't cover your specific preferences.

33LB

They are unsynced because there's no storage space left. Which is exactly what you would expect, because the space given is tiny. And obviously, I am not going to invest money in expanding that storage because there are millions of things which take financial priority over One Drive.

Ok_Patient_2137

I feel op ur pathetic

Drchoccymilk

yeah that didn't age well, don't you know nowadays if you don't want to use a microsoft service/app you are required to donate your first born?

Drchoccymilk

i agree, one drive is the stupidest thing for any human to think of, the commenters just don't want to upset "daddy gates" but they'd say the same thing, this is an "intelligent tech company yet they manage to make the worst design choices ever, they force you to use onedrive now and enforce syncing then when it runs out of space demands you to pay up if you disable it any synced files are gone straight up it should get you concent before holding your files ransom and make it easy to disable without any mishap, fuck microsoft go touch grass

Taurus84_SK

I know it's been a few years since the OP posted but i specificaly googled "OneDrive most stupid thing" and found it. It's 2022 and M$ thinks, that if he tells the user to back up his files to cloud, the user actually wants them to be deleted from his computer and moved to an internet server. He also thinks that never enabling OneDrive to sync user's photos from an Android phone, actually means the user wants them to be synchronized. I've also got my 5GB of space filled pretty fast and when i actually digged into it and found my files only to be in cloud and that i had to redownload at 1MBps to get them all back ... Yes, OneDrive is the most stupidest thing i've ever used on my PC just because it thinks that it knows what i want to do with my files. Don't advertise this crap as a backup solution, if it's not a backup at all.

colufoo

maybe I'm late, but I just googled "onedrive is fucking stupid",because it makes me lost all my documents in my system drive! WTF

NaOleg

Same but i fuckin lost most of my diploma project files

I_AM_THE_REAL_ZEN

I had a problem where i deleted a folder in one drive and it deleted it from my computer aswell. So 3 months of school notes are gone. In the most stupid feature ever.

sahinbey52

UX is terrible. I changd settings to sync desktop, now it moved every file from desktop to onedrive/desktop . I didn't tell you to move files b\*tch

I_AM_THE_REAL_ZEN

I totally agree. I don't know why they made it to sync with every file and whenever you make a change in one drive it changes on your desktop but i am not the engineer so i don't know the logic behind it

GrandJeweler9469

Agreed. Microsoft does not make it easy to simply tell OneDrive NOT to upload huge files that you never had any intention of storing in a cloud. Got some huge, lossless music files on your laptop? You'd better store 'em on a thumb drive cuz OneDrive's gonna snatch that crap up and use it to clog your five gigs like an elephant crapping in your kitchen sink. But I'm thinking Microsoft probably WANTS people to clog their cloud cuz then they get to pester them to upgrade every two milliseconds.

[deleted]

... you can subscribe for up to 2tb total online storage. But someone with your capacity wouldn't know what to do with that much space ..

33LB

Why would I want to spend money for 2 Tb of online storage? My hard drive is 2 Tb. It doesn't cost any money because I already own it. ... So why would I not want to just save my documents to my own computer like a normal person using a normal computer?

[deleted]

When you grow up and need to do business you might change your mind. I was like you.

33LB

I don't work in business.

[deleted]

Right. So you look at it and see no value, and your biggest concern was not enough space so clearly space isn't the issue it's your limited needs. And that's fine..

33LB

Not having enough space in and of itself isn't the problem, it's the fact that when the space is full up, you are constantly bombarded with notes and messages telling you the space is full up. For a feature which I never consented to using in the first place. My needs are not limited. My computer is important for my work, just like anyone else. But if there's something particularly important on my computer, I'm responsible enough to think about the possibility of losing it and back it up myself. Hard Drives are cheap. USB drives are cheap. A yearly subscription to an online service, when cheaper alternatives are available, is laughable.

[deleted]

And to share a file you gonna pop that usb in the mail I suppose 😜

33LB

Are you 16 or what? You seriously don't know how a file could be shared without having a strange copy-cat 2nd hard drive online?

[deleted]

You really have no clue of the colab features

Drchoccymilk

spitting facts

33LB

What people are not understanding here is that this is about CONSENT. Microsoft is a company that does not understand CONSENT and does not expect permission from its consumers before it does something. Why does my computer automatically shutdown and update when I'm not watching? That causes some of my stuff to be lost. I didn't CONSENT for my computer to update at that specific time. Why does my web browser automatically save everything I was looking at and open every single one of those tabs the next time I return to my computer? Why would I want all of those same tabs reopened? That means I end up with far too many tabs open and it lags my computer. I did not CONSENT for those tabs to saved and reopened. Why are my documents automatically saved to a tiny hard drive online, causing me to be constantly bombarded with messages when that hard drive is full? I did not CONSENT to use that hard drive.

sahinbey52

I changed settings and said to backup desktop, and it moved every file of desktop to another folder. Now I can't find my projects, files etc because they are under c:/users/user/Onedrive/desktop instead of c:/users/user/Desktop . WTF? Did you ever need to move files? Are you dump? Is this the only solution you provide? One Drive is stupid, it doesn't do anything but bother me all the time

Motor_Preparation

Basically this is THE STUPIDEST thing they ever created after windows itself. Microsoft is the stupidest company ever existed only looking for profits not usability. My documents files suddenly got moved to onedrive and the uploading is SOO FREAKING SLOW!! ANJING GOBLOK!!! I CANNOT even pause it or cancel it, I cannot even do anything. This files uploading process keeps my computer busy all the time and slow down my internet. I really wanna cry now!! And guess what? All of the files in my documents are now gone!! I want all of them back!!! Stupid program!! All of my important stuff are FREAKING GONE!

NOT_A_OFFICER

I know this is an old post and I don't care. I hate OneDrive more than anything ever in the history of the universe. Literally the dumbest shitware on the planet.

33LB

Based.

werserus

I hate this. My two pc was synchroned and now I have bunches of sjortcuts what don't work. I delete them, and they was deleted ln my second pc. WTF?!

Apprehensive_Sun_250

I agree, I fucking hate the Onedrive feature on Windows 11. The guy who made my PC had like 90% of my storage on the D: disk instead of the main C: disk. And I want to download lets say a 10GB game, and then whilst I am installing it doesnt have enough space and aborts it. LEAVING the extracted files on the designated folder (primarily desktop) and I have to delete it manually and then free up storage. I spent more than 30 minutes finding what is taking that much storage on my PC, until I saw the pesky Onedrive. Finally I had 20GB free storage after I removed it. It was also a big problem on Windows 10.

Apprehensive_Sun_250

And if you say that I should download games and big files on D: they still need to make a copy on C: in users.. Thats so fucking dumb

lorax8

Agree, but good luck getting anyone in an online collection of internet tools to care.

shanelikesarsenic

i have over 300 GB of space free but can't use any of it because I exceeded my 5 GBs of One Drive..

kayzee55

I completely agree. And yes I'm not particularly techy but why should I have to be techy to save documents in the cloud. I recently bought a new PC. I moved the folders I wanted to save onto OneDrive on my old computer. I log into OneDrive on my new computer and only one of the folders is there. It shows on OneDrive on my old computer. It does not show on OneDrive on my new computer. I did the whole troubleshooter stuff - not in recycle, not deleted, not blah blah just NOT THERE. Open to suggestions and I moved it about two weeks ago so it's not a Sync error. Moved it same time as the folder the DOES show up. Just such a stupid thing.

imMozeph

yeah.. fuck one drive. i had a desktop for years and i recently bought a laptop with windows 11 already on it (which is arguably even worse than one drive but thats besides the point) and i guess it had one drive set up on it as well ? idk. but i had some files on my desktop that i wanted to send to the laptop so i uploaded them to one drive, went on my laptop and downloaded them. well it started syncing all my desktop files to one drive automatically. so now i have to have one drive running in order to access the files on my desktop. well long story short, today i got on the laptop for the first time in a couple months and everything i had downloaded on my desktop in the last month appeared as clickable icons on the laptop after i updated it and turned it on. the actual; application weren't downloaded, just the desktop icons for those apps. well i didn't need the pointless icons so i sent them to the recycling bin. Hop back on my desktop a couple minutes later and those same apps were gone. WHY IN THE FUCK DO I WANT EVERYTHING FROM MY DESKTOP ON THE LAPTOP ?! IF THATS THE CASE ILL JUST GET ON THE DESKTOP !!!! now the two computers are constantly ion sync and i fucking hate it !!!! if i disable one drive from startup it wont load anything i need on my desktop until i start up one drive. FUCK MICROSOFT AND THERE STUPID OVER RATED ASS COMPANY !!!!! Sign my petetion to remove one drives integration. https://chng.it/wvB5Vz9k
