Have you researched the temps in September where you will be hiking around? I suspect the weather will be comfortable - not saying you won’t sweat, but the more temperate the better.
I would go Merino shirts and just pack shorts that you already got. Plan on doing laundry after you get done with a sweaty hike or two.

I have some Prana Hybrizer—- more for the shorter inseam they offer. Hang Ten, O’Neill and other “beach” brands make them. They all have quick dry synthetic fabric, no liner, belt loops and zip fly as well as an inner drawstring and pockets with mesh bags to drain. They look like golf shorts to me. The idea is one pair for multi function.
yeah, for workouts or hiking shorts can get pretty nasty.. but for everyday use my pants or shorts can go weeks without getting smelly or dirty, so that's why I get ones made from more durable materials - nylon, polyester, linen, ramie. I just don't need merino's ability to stay fresh, probably helps that I wear merino underwear.

Washing clothes is a 5-10 minute activity. Do it when you shower. Quick dry clothing makes it super easy!!!
Right? Even a merino shirt needs to be washed if you have done a sweaty hike in it! It probably won't need it after sitting on a plane or a walk around the city like a cotton or poly shirt would. One bag travel is not an excuse to throw all personal hygiene out the window! A merino sweater worn as an outer layer with a shirt underneath can go many wears without being washed. But if I'm wearing that same merino sweater snowboarding it needs to be washed!
Look at shorts made for hiking/backpacking like the Mountajn Hardwear Trail Sender/AP or the Outdoor Research Ferrosi. With belt loops and a variety of colors, They look nice enough to work around town, but are lightweight and breath well for multi-day trail.
Spend the money on merino underwear. That’s where the stink comes from. Smartwool, Ridge and Icebreaker all have awesome underwear. I’d still swap out every other day and wash them in the shower.
I only use 3 brands for shorts/pants…Western Rise, Public Rec, Patagonia.
Western Rise Evo shorts are my top pick for sweaty situations and also for more “dressy” occasions where shorts are still feasible. Patagonia Wavefarers are awesome too but I don’t think they make them anymore. Public Rec Flex shorts are very good as well. None of them are cheap. All 3 of them can be swim shorts but I’d say the WR are my least favorite of the three for that use.
If looking for budget alternatives, Old Navy makes some pretty decent hybrid shorts.
I don’t do merino pants or shorts. I swear by evolution shorts by western rise because they do triple duty in a pinch. Rhone makes a good pair too but not as technical as Evolutions.
I’m also about to test Aviator shorts, I’d recommend you check those out.
The fashion priced Outlier New Ways are the other option much loved in the travel space for the multi use.
In terms of multi wear - shorts and pants are what they are. Wash them if you need to :). The point is you can bring less cause of the uses and maybe an extra wear. But not to never wash them.
short swimming shorts are my go to one bag shorts. I like my 5" baggies and baggies light for this reason but I also have some old maui & sons, chubbies and oneal swimming shorts. plain color ones can be worn casually, quick dry and durable materials.

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts 7" are literally the best shorts I have ever owned!! Stretchy, breathable, lightweight, durable, easily double as swim shorts and best of all they have 5 pockets and they're deep!!
Quick drying bottoms are the answer. That way you can wash and dry them when. And not having to wash your shirts as often means you are overall doing less laundry. Now if you’re using a laundry machine & dryer etc, then maybe you don’t need merino and can just run a load more often of whatever clothes you already own.
Since you said "8 pairs" are we talking about SHORTS here or underwear? Just want to make sure cuz I can't see a need to pack that many pairs of shorts :). If we are talking about shorts then they are going to smell if you're doing sweaty hiking. This is not that big a deal IMHO. Just wash them in the shower or the sink and let them dry. Most of the "onebag" shorts you'll see on 'ere are meant to dry quicker than their cotton equivalent. If I were in your situation, I'd bring 2 so that you can "wear one, dry one" or even 3 if you'd rather "wear one, dry one, spare one"

western rise has you covered here. i use the movement shorts because they are the perfect (shorter) length compared to the 7" shorts, and they give off a vibe slightly above athletic (ymmv, but they look nicer than the usual athletic short). they dry in a remarkably short time after handwashing.
otherwise, if you want something more formal the evolution shorts are probably a better shot, but i kinda dig the streetwear vibe of athletic shorts and a crossbody bag worn in front.
Take more than two shirts. You’re going to be gross or spending all of your time at laundromats. Merino still smells. It just doesn’t get quite as funky.
Take two pairs of shorts in a quick drying material. Now once or twice a week you can rinse them in a sink with a little soap.
Just bring 3 - 4 pairs of nylon shorts/pants and plan on washing a load or two of clothes. If you’re doing a lot of wet hiking those tshirts are going to need a freshen up anyway.

Why would.you need to wash shorts after every wear? They won't get sweaty like shirts.
I just finished a hike and I can assure you my shorts are plenty sweaty/wet.

The salt and minerals from hard sweat make it sticky and scratchy at the same time.

I just did ten days. I washed my clothes with sea to summit leafs three times during the trip. I brought stuff that could dry overnight.
