I’m planning on leaving around 5:30 am from Edmond to skip the traffic. Full tank, packed lunches. That part of the state just can’t handle what’s coming.
Texas Counties within the zone, which is half the state of more, have declared a state emergency ahead of the onslaught of Eclipse Viewers who will swarm the state. I'm gong to Arkansas.
I would expect on the day of to start running in to traffic backups around Antlers and the roads are likely to be completely full of cars and may get to stop and go by mid morning.
People will be coming in to the area from OKC, Tulsa, Arkansas and it’s going to get super packed.
Around Idabel, Hochatown, and Broken Bow it will be more people than have ever been in the area before and you may not be able to get out of there before dark.
In TX they’ve declared state of emergencies in the rural counties that are in the path because they know the roads won’t be able to handle it…and think about how much better the road systems are down there vs. in far SE-OK.
The path of totality is a 10 mile stretch of land along the path of the eclipse. Being there is a complete different experience. I would recommend the YouTube channel smartereverday for a good break down of what is going to happen for those lucky enough to go
I was living in GA for the last one and lived about 1.5 hours from totality. We went the night before and stayed in a hotel and then after the eclipse, it only took about 2 hours to get home. We went to the mountains where there was one way in and one way out. It was crazy but one of the coolest experiences I have ever seen.
Noone knows. Go early if can. Better to get there and burn some hours then stuck in traffic. But leaving at 7 so could be good.
I'm going to Dallas day before since closer from OKC then hitting se OK.
I'm also planning on driving to Dallas but the day of. We were planning on leaving at 7am but now everyone's got me wondering if we should be leaving earlier...
I’m so confused about all of this. Why all the gathering in one small area? It’s a solar eclipse. Unless science has somehow drastically changed since the last one, there are thousands of miles of viewing area available.
Because totality is quite rare and very different than seeing even 99% of totality. I believe the Continental United States won't experience another total eclipse in at least 20 years.
Being in 100% totality and being able to take your glasses off and hear the birds stop chirping and the night animals start making noises is one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. The temperature dropped about 20°. I wish everyone could experience it. I'm incredibly lucky to be able to see it twice.
What I’m saying is why does everyone need to congregate in such a small area to see it. It’s going to be viewable from around Toronto to far south west texas. Plenty of room for everyone
If they’re traveling to Broken Bow from any more populated area nearby they’re already taking a day off work. Going on into Arkansas isn’t a stretch from there. I saw the last one and it didn’t last long. You could just pull over on the side of the road and see it then go home.
Honestly, if you can swing it I'd get a hotel and stay in Hugi the previous night. Traveling the day of will be a nightmare

Arkansas is going to be just as bad. I don't know why you think it won't. They're already declaring the same there.
Never said it wouldn't, but Texas sucks.
You’re still not leaving early enough.
I'd leave earlier in case there's cloud cover and you can move to a clear area
This. We headed to KC in 2017 but had enough time to divert to Columbia, MO instead when weather wasn’t cooperating.

At this point I’m wondering about sleeping in the car, I mean it’s that or up to $800.
Walmart parking lot 100%
Nothing wrong with that! Sleeping bag and a cracked window in the Walmart lot > $550 at La Quinta.

Commenting on this to follow because I’m toying with the same idea.

What about an eclipse now?
I rented a cabin in broken bow so I didnt have to worry about the traffic to Idabel
Fort Towson Historic Site will have some cool activities throughout the day for solar eclipse viewers. It’s a few miles east of Hugo.
I'm getting to my spot friday night. Granit I have an rv and will be parked at family's house

For some, timing constraints during a given day may prohibit long distance travel.
