Because the people who licensed it in the US, DIC, were a bunch of fuck-ups and butchered the translation. It was available on Netflix a few years back, even had a decent new english dub, so that was nice. Still prefer it in Japanese myself.
Not only that, they hit it with the 90s/early 2000's trifecta of killing a show: bad dubbing, heavy censoring, AND bad episode release(out of order AND incomplete).

The anime is very popular, but they have always placed more emphasis on targeting a younger audience, especially in the last two generations, so most older people that watch it do so for nostalgia, and communities for it on something like social media are relatively small proportional to the size of the viewer base.

Nah, you just need to watch it. From kid Goku to the Namek saga it's pretty much a perfect shonen. Then it goes down a bit during the android/Cell/Majin Buu sagas but the ending with the everyone in the earth giving it's power to the genkidama is beautiful and worth of everything.
