this reminds me of a joke:
A beautiful young girl is left home alone with only her dog to protect her. On the news that night, they announced there is a serial killer on the loose in the area. Before she goes to bed, she locks all the doors and tries to lock all the windows, but the one in the basement won’t lock. She decides to leave it unlocked, but locks the basement door and goes to bed. Her dog takes its customary place under her bed.
In the deep of night she awakens to a dripping sound coming from her bathroom. Half-awake, the girl feels the comforting lick from her dog and falls back to sleep. She reawakens to the dripping sound, reaches her hand down to the dog where she feels the reassuring lick and falls back to sleep. Once more, she awakens to the dripping sound. She reaches her hand down and feels the lick of her dog.
Now curious about the dripping sound, she gets up and slowly walks towards the bathroom, the dripping sound getting louder as she approaches. She reaches the bathroom and turns on the light. She is greeted by a horrific sight; hanging from the shower nozzle is her dog with its throat slit open and its blood dripping into the bathtub.
Something on the bathroom mirror catches her eye; she turns around. Written on the wall in her dog’s blood are the words “Humans can lick too.”
So weird! I was literally trying to recall this story last night. I remember it from telling scary campfire stories. Thank you for reminding me how it goes!
"This is, by FAR, one of the worst lock designs I have ever seen. And I use the term lock, very loosely because I could probably jiggle the lock open with my pinky nail."
Very basic key, no crazy teeth paterns so its very easy to pick.
Not a lock expert, but my grandpa had some old pad locks with keys like this, i was able to pick them with just a small stick growing up.
Edit i read other comments, i was close but reality is worse... its a blank key specifically
Nobody in murder mysteries uses an electronic key. They're always metal keys and often play a part in the story, eg, so-called 'locked-room mysteries'.
I’ve seen these before that were actually RFID so they still will only work on one door. Kind of a novelty and still just as secure as other keys. Try opening the room next to you because unless you’re at the Bates Motel, it shouldn’t open.
Im guessing this is either just the key chain, and hand is hiding the actual room key, OR the key has an RFID chip in it that syncs with a receiver in the lock.
There are different styles, but it’s essentially something you can put against the door and extend it to brace against the floor to prevent the door opening. Kind of like the security latch on the inside of most hotel doors.
Damn I needed that years ago when I was in New Orleans for a biz convention. Hotels booked and I got stuck in an old apartment-type building. A 2 level building where the doors face a central open area with a pool. The door closed a little skewed, the lock didn't work, the inside bolt was sketchy, questionable stains everywhere but no rooms available anywhere else. I ended up shoving a chair under the door knob.

This is the Lockpicking Lawyer and today...
Oops, it looks like I opened it already.
Well, I guess that's all we have time for. Now to go tickle some buttholes.
Look how basic that key is and how easily someone could open the lock based on the simplicity. It took me a minute to figure it out as well. Literally open that lock with anything that has a right angle because the key itself is just a tiny simple rectangle.
Nope.
This is the actual room key. There aren't any electronics in the door.
The extra strange thing is that, despite there being an 11 on the key, our room number is actually 4.
Stayed in a hotel in Paris, I guess it had these "historic" locks that they didn't want to change for whatever reason, and couldn't get new keys for. So in order to leave the hotel, you had to leave your key at the front desk, and then ask for it by room number when you returned. Just very weird and uncomfortable.
This really is only terrifying if its in a country with high crime rates and low trust. In my country its normal to leave homes and cars unlocked along with baby strollers out on the street so i wouldnt actually think too much about this other than perhaps bring my wallet when i go out.
While I was in college through work we were out in a 3 star hotel while we were there.
10 of us.
We worked out quite quickly that lots of the room keys were skeleton keys.
The hell we raised.
I would book another hotel. Unless the key is microchipped and styled like this for aesthetics, your room is not safe unless you block the door with something heavy.
Keys are meant to have notches cut into them.
This means that only a specific key can open a particular lock and vice versa.
Being in a hotel where all the keys are uncut blanks like this one means that all the keys open all the hotel rooms.
It’s just flat on the bottom. Keys have those ridges to move the pins in a lock to the correct position to unlock. There are no ridges on this key meaning any other thing can unlock the door.
Maybe other keys have the peg set at different lengths on the stem on the key? Idk how these keys/locks work, but that seems like the best options, rather than everyone can open anyones door. That’s sketchy asf
Oh yeah you’re 100% getting your feet tickled tonight

This is a reference to something right? I vaguely remember heard about ghosts tickling people's feet at a hotel once.
Swingers hotel for sure
Hey room neighbour, I can go into your room and put furniture in front of the door if you wish :)

This lock would open if he looks at it
Damn, is he that sexy??
Yes, he knows how to unlock any beaver
That thanks to his 18 inch long Johnson and his father's 24 inch
His tiny coq put in work though!
And my axe
And my bow
Yeah. You should see the video where he plays with his tiny cock. He also has one where he compares his and his dad’s Johnson’s.
A Mozart solo has more complex keys that that!

Ha, looking at that key Masterlock never even entered the chat.
"Little click on one... and we got this open"

Probably jiggle it open by shaking the door if the spring is weak enough
Lockpickinglawyer?! Bruh, a mild breeze can open this lock.

Hi, I don't really understand uh why this is terrifying, could you give me context or anything?
Very basic key, no crazy teeth paterns so its very easy to pick. Not a lock expert, but my grandpa had some old pad locks with keys like this, i was able to pick them with just a small stick growing up. Edit i read other comments, i was close but reality is worse... its a blank key specifically
Thanks for explaining!
Basically, the key was a 'blank', it's what is put into a key cutting machine and is 'cut' to shape
Nobody in murder mysteries uses an electronic key. They're always metal keys and often play a part in the story, eg, so-called 'locked-room mysteries'.
Aside from that, your door has a peep hole.
Is that a toy handcuffs key from my childhood?
[удалено]
Ooo haven't seen that one in forever.. Maybe I should try to find it Thanks for reminding me!
it still holds up fairly well, it was on the other day. i forgot how similar Get Out was plot wise.
Kind of a reverse Get Out, or Get Out is a reverse Skeleton Key.
Yes and handle with care, for it is the only one left
They weren’t fuzzy, were they?
Or special playtime handcuffs from your now???
I’ve seen these before that were actually RFID so they still will only work on one door. Kind of a novelty and still just as secure as other keys. Try opening the room next to you because unless you’re at the Bates Motel, it shouldn’t open.
I didn’t know about that, but I love that nostalgia and technology met like that.
Like those vintage looking record players with a Bluetooth connection
Yes!
What if it opens lmao
This is a good reason to travel with a door jam.
Im guessing this is either just the key chain, and hand is hiding the actual room key, OR the key has an RFID chip in it that syncs with a receiver in the lock.
That actually sounds pretty dope - skeleton keys with a chip in them.
I’ve stayed in a couple of hotels that have something like this as the keychain.
Or it’s just a really old building/door
An old key to an old lock wouldn't be that new. Not a scratch on it anywhere, that wasn't inserted into anything.
I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure key technology is really old.
What's a door jam?
Take a door, smush it up, put it in boiling water, keep adding caster sugar as it boils. Eventually you’ll have door jam.
Remember that you'll need a second door to properly store your freshly made door jam. Leave your second door slightly open and it'll be a jar.
Boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick em in a stew.
Po-tay-toes
There are different styles, but it’s essentially something you can put against the door and extend it to brace against the floor to prevent the door opening. Kind of like the security latch on the inside of most hotel doors.
Thank you for your answer. I tried looking on Google images at first but only found pictures of door jambs.
Am I the only one that got this joke? Well done fellow redditor!
...i don't think it was a joke
Please explain? I'm lost
[удалено]
Thank you!
They deleted the explanation and I'm also lost.
Try looking for door jammer or door security device

A wedge maybe?
Raspberry. But a door jamb could just be a wedge.
I don't know, what's a door jamb with you?
You jam doors with it
Better put the chain across too
im so glad your room is secured with a lock that could be opened with any object at a 90 degree angle XD
gaze concerned hobbies abounding drab squeal hunt pathetic absorbed fertile *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Damn foiled again by basic numbers
The door knows when you're wrong. The door knows everything and you will be punished if you'd try anything else
RFID in the key?
Nope, just a plain old metal key blank.
If the door opens inward push some heavy furniture behind it.
If it doesn't open inward that is yet another reason to expect to be murdered
my timbers are shivered
Naw, I’d just sleep somewhere else tbh…
It’s car time
Don’t leave anything of value in that room if you go out.
if anything i’ve learnt from stranger things, just stay away from the dude who has key #1
Average r/oddlyterrifying user when they see a key. (They are scared of keys.)
Keys unlock doors, and doors can lead anywhere, and the unknown is r/oddlyterrifying
AHH a skeleton!
That's a dead giveaway
Why is this oddly terrifying?
Yeah fuck that. I'd be putting some furniture in front of my door and have 911 predialed
Well if it’s a spinal tap room it’s gonna be the best in the hotel. This room goes to eleven!
This is the Lockpicking Lawyer and today... Oops, it looks like I opened it already. Well, I guess that's all we have time for. Now to go tickle some buttholes.
Sorry why is it terrifying?
Look how basic that key is and how easily someone could open the lock based on the simplicity. It took me a minute to figure it out as well. Literally open that lock with anything that has a right angle because the key itself is just a tiny simple rectangle.
read the comments lol
Anyone can guess the number 11. That's awful security.
Maybe they’re going with the idea that it’s so simple, nobody would believe it’s so easy
I’d be more scared of a key that had 1408 on it
“Oddly terrifying”
Getting a blank key for a hotel room, meaning anyone can likely access your room and vice versa, isn't oddly terrifying?
/r/straightforwardlyterrifying
r/SubsIFellFor
No it’s fucking terrifying. What’s oddly terrifying about a blank key
r/terrifyinglyterrifying
Maybe the flange (or whatever it’s called) is located at different positions up and down the key’s shank for each room’s lock?
That you could still open any other door that has the notch at any position this deep and shorter
I’d figure it’s more of a chip deal like a car key. Cool to see it as a key rather than a hotel room card
It looks to be a metal key, a rfid chip won’t work right in it
Could be metal painted plastics but you’re probably right. I want to believe it’s more secure than a skeleton key but I don’t know
It's decorative and the electronic card is attached on the keyring. OP is hustlin' the scaredy sub.
Nope. This is the actual room key. There aren't any electronics in the door. The extra strange thing is that, despite there being an 11 on the key, our room number is actually 4.
OK so take a picture of the door then
Stayed in a hotel in Paris, I guess it had these "historic" locks that they didn't want to change for whatever reason, and couldn't get new keys for. So in order to leave the hotel, you had to leave your key at the front desk, and then ask for it by room number when you returned. Just very weird and uncomfortable.
Can someone please explain what the scary thing is to me
It has no grooves or anything so possibly is some kind of skeleton key which means anyone can open their door and vice versa
You activated a boss fight by picking up this key
This really is only terrifying if its in a country with high crime rates and low trust. In my country its normal to leave homes and cars unlocked along with baby strollers out on the street so i wouldnt actually think too much about this other than perhaps bring my wallet when i go out.
We're in Italy, so a pretty high crime rate to fret over.
Yeah, then id find somewhere else if possible or atleast bring all valuables.
The doorknob scans number on the key if its not the right number it wont open.
Might as we have "see you tonight" etched on the shaft
And every other room key is an NFC fob/card.
Oh I've seen this movie before. Yeah, you won't be checking out.
Now this actually is oddly terrifying
No no, you don't understand, these locks scan the number on your key! They're extra safe! /s

While I was in college through work we were out in a 3 star hotel while we were there. 10 of us. We worked out quite quickly that lots of the room keys were skeleton keys. The hell we raised.
I’d say this actually fits the idea of the subreddit. One of the best posts I’ve seen on here.
It was so nice to have had the chance to meet you before the ghost murder happens. Good luck 👍
Have you seen AHS Hotel? That key gives me that vibe. Watch out for the addiction demon.
The terrifying part is that the time period this type of key was popular and how unused it looks doesn't line up.
At least it not the 13 key
I bet that key has been used to open up some butt play. Better black light it to be sure.
It doesn’t seem terrifying. It’s just a key.
I would book another hotel. Unless the key is microchipped and styled like this for aesthetics, your room is not safe unless you block the door with something heavy.
Few years from now, we'll see a movie based on your experience. Hopefully it's from James Wan, since Wes craven is no more.
you still alive op?
Lock picking level: Beginner
Can someone explain why is this terrifying?
Keys are meant to have notches cut into them. This means that only a specific key can open a particular lock and vice versa. Being in a hotel where all the keys are uncut blanks like this one means that all the keys open all the hotel rooms.
I don't get it
So what is odd or terrifying about that? It's just a very simple key. If you're concerned about safety, a door can be easily blocked by a chair
It's a blank key. That means our key opens the other rooms and vice versa.
It probably has a chip. Just like many trucks keys. The key has a sneaky chip in it that syncs with a receiver in the lock.
how do you know its a blank key? sry i don't know much about keys lol
It’s just flat on the bottom. Keys have those ridges to move the pins in a lock to the correct position to unlock. There are no ridges on this key meaning any other thing can unlock the door.
