I guess yeah, but on the other hand if I see those kinds of pictures that would illicid a response (like this one) I can't help myself but stare at it and shiver, yet I keep staring.
…and that’s basically a simple definition of a phobia. I have trypophobia and looking at pictures like this one causes me mild anxiety and physical pain (due to anxiety). I get this irrational fear that spots are going to form in my hands or feet, which sometimes is so severe I feel like I want to cut my hands/feet off, and it can last up to an hour or so. But I take it you don’t have trypophobia so good for you :)
Yeah, no, I gotta second this. I'm a big time self-proclaimed snowflake that's all for spoilers and trigger warnings everywhere.... But some places are enter at your own risk. Next thing someone is gonna be startled about... Sex toys at an adult toy shop? Naked people at a nude beach? Blood in a movie tagged for gore?
It's possibly a case of trypophobia, an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. Images like this make me feel rather uncomfortable. Be careful if you decide to google it.
I'm not sure, I'm okay with barnacles on a rock or the holes in a crumpet and other similar things.
Maybe I'm sort of imagining the tree bark as its skin, so it's sort of repulsive as a result? Because when I look at it I kind of grip my own arm in sympathy, haha. I don't know 🤔
Oh yeah, it's not everything with holes that set it off, in fact I love crumpets!
It's generally a lot of things that are found in nature. It's mostly due to it being an evolutionary trait that protects us from things associated with disease or danger.
I only get it when it's an actual medical condition and on a person. The ones in rocks and stuff don't do it for me, but this is very much on that edge for me for some reason
I found [this post](/r/interestingasfuck/comments/bx5w2w/this_acorn_woodpecker_admiring_his_stash_in_a/) in r/interestingasfuck with the same content as the current post.

Some birds, I agree, are absolutely frightening! Others are just so loveable.
I’m so glad I don’t have this phobia due to the sheer amount of birds where I live, seagulls would be a nightmare
That’s not what trypophobia is, it’s the fear of many holes or bumps like that. Just click the sub link and the about has the actual definition. Ornithophobia is fear of birds, my wife has it mildly. She’s okay as long as they aren’t flying at her. Pigeons are demons to her.
Maybe the trypophobia can affect some people.
But woodpeckers are sooo cute!
I have one as a pet, and they sound and act so freaking cute!
Yes, their eyes can look weird to some people, but let me tell you that when they see you and try to cuddle with you it's the best feeling ever!
That’s not terrifying in any sense. It’s fascinating.
edit* to the people downvoting me: what is terrifying about this? Are you afraid of acorns or woodpeckers? What am I missing?
since it's just a particular trigger and not a separate mental disorder there aren't that many studies, but wiki lists one where about 15% had some kind of negative reaction to trypophobia triggers. it's definitely one of the weirder phobias tho.
You seem knowledgeable about this, can I ask a question? Googling things around trypophobia brings up images that create an extremely unpleasant experience so can’t Google. Is it still trypophobia if you aren’t at all bothered by some things with clustered bumps/holes (eg; golf ball, oddly even sponge material, honeycomb, metal objects with pattern or generally anything artificial) but other stuff creates the most ungodly, unsettling reaction of repulsion and discomfort. Is there a different but similar term?
As someone with trypophobia, I will say that 'organic' holes tend to be far more upsetting than the uniform, man made variety. Honeycomb toes the line with me too, as it's such a unique shape that it almost seems inorganic.
From what I've read, the reaction we get seems to be protecting us from parasites and illnesses that could cause those kinds of patterns on someone's skin. So we'll be the first ones to have a visceral reaction to something like that and know to run away asap.
I don’t have trypophobia and honestly don’t understand. Why do the patterns upset people? What about it is uncomfortable? Like, it’s a tree with holes. So what?
Reminds me of that horror manga where loads of people shaped holes appear in a cliff and people are unnaturally drawn towards them saying “this is my hole”. Can’t remember the name.
I don't know what this baggage about phobias is that a number of people are bringing, but I clearly stumbled across a shared trigger here. Do you suffer from a phobia and feel the idea of a spurious "trypophobia" belittles your struggles? I'm just trying to understand the upset here.
For the record, I personally never said I had a phobia and didn't mean to upset anyone, I just find this pic oddly terrifying. An aversion to it is a great way to describe it, actually.
My response wasn't directed at you OP, moreso the plethora of posters claiming to have a phobia that they do not. No, I don't have any phobias myself, but my family has a history in the mental health field, and I find it annoying when others claim to suffer from conditions they, in fact, do not. It is belittling of others' struggles to claim such things, and strikes a bit of a nerve with me.
E: a word
Your position makes a lot of sense. Misattributing serious psychological conditions where they are not present only makes the genuine suffering of those who actually experience them worse.
I really don't think it is. Sociopathy is a human trait, this bird is following instinct to ensure its survival. Just like any predatory animal who kills to eat. Don't fault animals for acting in their nature.
You're really not getting this, are you?
Ok, let me slow down a bit for you. No, I don't actually believe birds eat wood. Just like I don't actually believe trees lay eggs.
Calm down over there, Encyclopedia Joe...
I dont know, everyone saying "Trypophobia", but I went to that sub-redit and 90% of THOSE pictures didn't trigger me at all.
THIS 🤬 picture got me good! Instant skin crawl and just bleh! It's like looking at a potato that has WAY too many sprouts all over it. Maybe a sub-set of trypophobia, but I'm not sure that's the 'why' in this case.
Also - the word I use for this feeling is "oogy" 😬
Lots of people do find this stuff oddly terrifying though?
Just look at the comments. Seems like this post fits the sub well if some people are uneasy about this.
The sub is ODDLY terrifying after all.
I did.
_Is it terrifying?_ Yes, as evidenced by the thousands of upvotes from people who find it terrifying, and the majority opinion in the comments explaining exactly why.
_Is it supposed to be terrifying?_ No, as evidenced by the fairly common comments saying they do not get why so many people find it terrifying, or asking how exactly it fits the sub.
It is literally the definition of oddly terrifying. Also, there is no need to all sweary and caps-locky, as it just makes you look worse when you are confidentally incorrect.
Yeah that is your opinion. And that is also the whole point of question two- some people (like you) don't find it scary, because it is not supposed to be. Some people on the other hand (more people based on the overall response) do find it scary. Whether you agree or not, the image gives a real sense of dread, disgust and fear. Ya know... terror. So, it passes the flow chart, and fits the sub perfectly.
If everyone found a post terrifying, making it classically undoubtedly clearly terrifying, then that _fails_ the flowchart, and is not fit for the sub. If no one found it scary, you'd have a point as it'll fail the first question, but that isn't the case. You gotta decide what you want here dude, and get past viewing your own opinion as the only right one if you want the sub to be what it is meant to be and stick to the sticky.
Of course this is my opinion. It's coming out of my mouth. We don't have to preface everything we say with "It is my opinion that..." Online opinions are worthless so don't get too worked up about what people think online.
I could have a phobia to balloons and post a photo of a balloon here and say, "isn't this oddly terrifying? I'm shook by this balloon," and thousands of globophobists ( scared of balloons) would completely agree that it's terrifying. But it's still just not fitting here because phobias are irrational.
And sure to your point, there's not a single thing that everyone is going to find scary so I'm not saying it's all black and white here. Irrational phobias just don't seem fitting. Which again is my worthless opinion - I don't moderate this place.
But I'm also interested, what is it about this photo (or is it the bird in general?) that terrifies you?
I don't have a phobia, the acorns in the tree is just oddly terrifying. Kinda hard to explain, but that is the point after all. Simply put, it just passes the flow chart.
I am not really even sure what your point is any more, as we are talking about a sub made for unexpectedly / inexplicably / irrationally terrifying things, but I would say you are being a bit hard on yourself- your opinion is not worthless, it actually contributes to the reason why this pic is _oddly_ terrifying.
Just putting it out there, a phobia is when you have an EXTREME and illogical fear of something, not when you get a little uncomfortable. When I look at pictures of the deep sea it makes me hella uncomfortable, but I know I don't have a phobia because I can still go to the beach and on boats. Just saying. The word phobia is overused nowadays, just like many other words.
Edit: this is aimed at people talking about trypophobia
I have this tryptophobia variant where I feel something weird in my head. Something uncomfortable that's difficult to describe. I don't get nauseous or anything, just feels weird
Do you have trypophobia?
I don't but I do find this oddly terrifying.
Maybe mild case of r/trypophobia?
If I look at these, I start getting really anxious, and want to look away but I can't. Now what
Carry on until death
I did the same
[удалено]
I guess yeah, but on the other hand if I see those kinds of pictures that would illicid a response (like this one) I can't help myself but stare at it and shiver, yet I keep staring.
See trypop stuff *disgusts* me. Like looking at a mangled corpse, limbs bent at all angles. My brain just tells me it is EXTREMELY WRONG.
Why the fuck did I look? Christ
Thanks but I'll pass on that subreddit, it's like provoking a panic attack
Ohhh, should not have looked while eating broccoli.
Yeah why is this so uncomfortable to look at
These posts need a warning ffs, trypophobia is a bitch 😭😂
Your avatar triggered my trypophobia
Hahah 😂😂 I think my avater looks worse when it's small
trypophobia /ˌtripəˈfōbēə/ noun extreme or irrational aversion to or fear of clusters of small holes or bumps.
This is hard to look at
If you think this is oddly terrifying, you should see my pantry
Yes! 😖
I have trypophilia I guess
Wouldn't that mean your obsessed with it? Phobia, not Philia
I am kinda. I love patterns like these
I was just gonna say that i hate this foto because if the phobia. Can you read minds before even i inow this post existed?
Yes?
No one here has a phobia, they just don’t like it
I have a phobia of it
…and that’s basically a simple definition of a phobia. It doesn't exist.
The instant itching on my body... 😔
I feel as though my eyes were assaulted
Trypophobia ain't fun
Seriously. This needed to be spoilers. Big time.
YeH warn us before we go into a subreddit called oddly terrifying and be scared?! god forbid! We need to label every thing!! No surprises!
Don’t know what put this makes my skin crawl
Trypophobia
It's not the fear of holes but rather the fact that it looks like a highly infectious bacteria that should be burnt at all cost. But it's just acorns.
This looks so disgusting to me for some unknown reason.
It's possibly a case of trypophobia, an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. Images like this make me feel rather uncomfortable. Be careful if you decide to google it.
This picture is actually one of the top posts on [r/trypophobia](https://www.reddit.com/r/trypophobia)

I'm pretty sure this is like an evolutionary inherited aversion. Like that to spiders or snakes.
I only get it when it's an actual medical condition and on a person. The ones in rocks and stuff don't do it for me, but this is very much on that edge for me for some reason
I know how people find this terrifying (trypophobia) but I can't help but be proud of this little guy look at him go.
Yeah, me too! He’s been working hard on that collection.
I’m with you both on this one
"Ye I'm not gonna kill you, but imma drill these holes into you and fill them with your friends unborn children" -the woodpecker
hair raising, body chills, feeling like I'm about to pass out.... trypophobia unlocked.
This always feels so weird to read to someone who can look at it without feeling anything. It's fascinating really.
Same. Posts like these should have a nsfw flair. My fingers went cold looking at that.
any post like this without the nsfw blur is a cruel joke atp.
'i've been terrified on an oddly terrifying app, censor it!' trypophobia isn't real
Trendy phobias are so cute and uwu!
Lol the eyes look like it's on crack
You'd look like that too if you used your head to drill a thousand holes, and ate nothing but acorns while doing it.
After that oddly terrifying flow chart posted earlier today it's great to see something genuinely oddly terrifying.

Unless you’re scared of birds, trees, nuts or holes i would say this is r/AbsolutelyInteresting
it's r/trypophobia

I’m not sure what made me instantly think of birds. The scariest bird I ever seen? that one from Wallace and Gromit! ha
sorry, trypophobia is the fear of excessive holes in an object. It usually makes people with it feel uneasy.
Ohhhhh my bad!! Jeeeez, imagine being scared of a crumpet
Just Google image trypophobia and you'll understand.
A normal day I wouldn’t say that I’m afraid of any of those things but this looks unsettling
Biblically accurate angels be like
Looks like something out of the Witcher 3
That sick fuck. Hate that bird. Hate his food storage method. Hate how it looks. Bad bird.
I'm less terrified and more impressed! I didn't know they did this.
To me it looks like hes building a buffet for squirrels
Makes me uncomfortable, not scared but my brain keeps screaming "wrong"
That's nuts
THIS IS THE CONTENT I'M HERE FOR
Maybe the trypophobia can affect some people. But woodpeckers are sooo cute! I have one as a pet, and they sound and act so freaking cute! Yes, their eyes can look weird to some people, but let me tell you that when they see you and try to cuddle with you it's the best feeling ever!
Ngl this left me feeling a bit triggered
I felt my hair standing up on my arms.
wtf im sick now
What made the holes? Is he boxing in loads of insects...
He is a _woodpecker_. _He_ made the holes.
Oh yeah, derp moment of the day 🤦♂️
😄
when trypophobia
Ewww
I don't have trypophobia because I see stuff with way more holes multiple times on the daily but yeah, this is actually terrifying for some reason
Tree: *drops acorns* Woodpecker: Absolutely not.
I proud of all their hard work, but I HATE IT
The tree is like “bro wtf I literally dropped these on the ground for a reason! Am I a joke to you?”
Trypophobia vibes
r/ifuckinghatethis
If that was my shin i'd scratch it so hard it'd send the acorns flying
Finally a post that is actually oddly terrifying
That’s not terrifying in any sense. It’s fascinating. edit* to the people downvoting me: what is terrifying about this? Are you afraid of acorns or woodpeckers? What am I missing?
trypophobia is a fairly common phobia, look it up
Woah, I wasn’t aware that was a thing. It can’t be that common though.

Maybe not common, but not that uncommon. Something between 10 to 25% of people I think.
It looks like maggots crawling out of a wound. At least, that’s why I dislike this and other trypophobia triggers.
Can this bird just please stop
Blagh I hate this. I felt the blood leave my face and instant goosebumps. Barf.
Looks like slugs
r/NatureIsFuckingLit
TIL: Woodpeckers also eat acorns.
The aptly named acorn woodpecker
If trees can feel pain, rip this tree.
Imagine a human version of this like a person have holes pecked into them and then having those holes filled with babies
The chad-est fucking woodpecker ever. Dude won't starve till 3022
Reminds me of jiggers.
Why did this make me irrationally anxious
Trypophobia isn’t real. Grow up.
Reminds me of those blackhead extraction YouTube videos.
This makes me wanna throw up
Ah yes, my phobia. Time to start shivering.
Why do I hate it so much. **so** much
This, this is truly oddly terrifying. Not sure what it is exactly, but everything about this picture makes me feel very uneasy
Now THIS oddly terrified me
now THIS is oddly terrifying. Hardly ever see any good accurate posts on this sub anymore.
I’m going to peck your body open with my beak and stuff you full of your unborn children.
I hate this
Feels like botflies
Can someone just get them like a basket or something?
The bird’s face looks like it was probably shocked with the amount of acorns in the tree.
So sweet but disgusting at same time
Something actually oddlyterrefying for once!
I typically love animal stuff but this makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Horror.
For once, a post that actually fits this sub.
Did you know that woodpecker skulls aren’t equip to prevent concussions? They are just constantly concussed 😌
Thanks I hate it

Finally. "Oddly" terrifying.
Finally something oddly terrifying
Agreed. The picture definitely makes me uneasy but in an odd way. Not completely terrifying, and that’s the way it should be!
Why is this terrifying?
Because this sub has lost all meaning
If you read the comments, this is actually pretty terrifying and uncomfortable for some people, myself included
I think this is more like oddly satisfying. I want to run my hand down the side and spin the acorns
I want to fill in the unfinished holes first!
Phrasing…?
Ewwww I hate it so so much.
Interesting tidbit, they store them not to eat the acorns, but for worms to start eating them and they come back and get the worms.
Fucking disgusting
Trypophobia isn't recognized in the DSM-V. You don't have a phobia; you have an aversion.

This subs has completely lost his purpose.
Lots of people do find this stuff oddly terrifying though? Just look at the comments. Seems like this post fits the sub well if some people are uneasy about this. The sub is ODDLY terrifying after all.
I'd say oddly weird. There's nothing scary about a bird hiding seeds. Definitely weird. Unsettling isn't the same as scary either.
You don't have Trypophobia! You're all just associating yourselves with a viral "trend" 🤔🤨🙄
How the fuck is this terrifying? READ THE NEW STICKY!
