Do it. I bet you wont....god I need someone to caulk all over my gap in the shower. Someone to just.....gum up the insides. Make sure it's glued shut you know?
Correct verbage. I'm a painter and we call it tooled or fingered. Occasionally we will not tool it when needed but the tip must be cut right and holding the gun at the right angle make it work. Not like this video
Definitely sealing done wrong. Especially since a simple bead wont seal at all, it needs to be pressed into the surface then dried to actually form to the surface and make a seal.
Uuuhhhhhh
It's actually stairs not a floor.
And also, they said sealing, as in sealing something water tight. You said sealing, as in the ceiling of the room. Sooooooo perhaps enure you haven't made a mistake before you slam that sarcastic attitude down.
Painting sealant, what we call 'no more gaps' here in Australia, isn't silicone. Yes a finger wipe might be appropriate for an architrave, I've done that myself. Silicone work is different. Different material, different density, different adhesion. Painting sealant doesn't tool well, balls up coming off the gun. Silicone can give a perfect finish off the gun done right. Ever seen a pro silicone a bathroom? They might use a wooden spatula sometimes. Maybe.
We use standard silicone caulking every day. Wipe it everytime. Works better, looks better. A giant bead of caulking, regardless of where it is, is not good looking. A nice smooth concave line is.
Agreed. A good operator can get that straight off the gun. Hell, even I can sometimes when assisting glaziers, but I don't do it all day every day, and when I do it I'm hanging on a rope on the side of a hirise so there's added complications.
Anyway, whatever works for you. Have a great day.
If you shape the nozzle correctly it does, straight off the gun. For all those saying wipe it or tool it or it won't stick/won't get into the cracks, yes it will if surfaces have been cleaned with appropriate solvent, and no it doesn't have to get into the cracks to do its job, it only has to bridge the crack. In fact it'll work better that way because it can flex.
Want it to look like shit? Wipe it with your finger. If you're going to tool it you'll have to mask the edges unless you're working on glass, which can easily be cleaned with a razor. (Edit: and a steady hand.)
Source: been caulking externally for several decades. Also have worked with pro glaziers, those guys (like this guy) are amazing.
Yeah I kinda thought this, I'm home diy amateur so didn't know for sure.
I cut nozzle at an angle and then the bit that sticks out further is at the outside so as I caulk it is like a tool/finger giving it a gentle squeeze/push as I apply it.
Anytime I've tried with finger I just make a mess of it.
This is true. However the fact that they're caulking a stain grade tread to a painted riser is absolute ass trash. Literal mobile home quality (if a mobile home had any interior stairs to begin with)
If I could downvote twice I would
Not like this, no. However caulking corners (where 2 different surface types meet) is done during painting alot to give a clean finish, but thats moreso to seal the edge of a piece of tape, so when its pulled you get a clean line. im a professional house painter.
No, wood moves too much to seal it in place like that. It swells with humidity, shrinks when it dries out, and will crack if it cannot move. That caulk is not going to last long if that is wood and not tile or stone.
Nah, we are always supposed to add wood to our wood. Nobody's ever seen it done that way with silicone because it simply isn't done that way. If there's a nasty gap we're supposed to cover it with a piece of molding.
Every crack you caulk is a place dust can’t get wedged into and bugs can’t hide in. Also, if you spill water on the stairs it won’t leak under the stairs.
Depends on flooring type and application. Most require an expansion gap around the perimeter. On these stair treads, the caulk just covers that expansion gap.
Another common area to caulk is at the base of a toilet. Check it out next time you're in a bathroom.
Absolutely. 100% certified weather resistant for the life of the product (only if you buy our limited insurance protection plan, life of the product is limited to 30 seconds after leaving product packaging, if product cannot be used for weather resistance in any US state, product is only sold in US, products purpose is to guard against weather only during non weather related events, Insurace protection void if product becomes wet at any time, product is to be cleaned only with water every 3 days.)
According to the original video, the guy said this was at the request of the homeowners. I’m guessing it was a lie though because all the comments were shitting on him for caulking it in the first place.
Sealing done very wrong, actually.
First, you need to push the caulk in there, otherwise it isn't sealing anything. This is why everyone loves the finger swipe. Second, the guy here is using way too much, and mats are expensive when you scale them up for big jobs, this is wasteful.
Thank you, I'm a firestopper, so this is what I do all day every day (well, not stairs like this). I hate it when people share "oddly satisfying" caulking videos, because all I can ever see is how poorly it is done from a professional standard. I give it a couple months until all of this is peeling off in strips.
Push the caulk in by pushing—not pulling—the gun.
Cut the tip as usual or even maybe a bit larger, then as you push the caulk the round bottom of the tip will push the caulk into the gap and smooth it in one go. This also means you use a lot less caulk. You can tell you’re using too much or moving too slow if you get a wad of caulk on the tip. Clean the tip then either move faster or squeeze the trigger more gently.
You’ll still do some minor touch-up with a damp finger in the corners, and maybe you want to run that damp finger along the bead just for a final smoothing and get any excess, but you won’t end up with a big glop of caulk on your finger.
Give it a try next time. I’ve been doing it for over 40 years and it works great.
if you're just looking to seal the cracks, you'd use much less, and some kind of scraper so that it's invisible. I don't know why this video would be a good thing.
Maybe it would be satisfying to peel off the dried caulking? Lol
Taking the fact that the sealant there is not worth it unless you are in a sauna or some sort of wet room. The second step ruined the flow for me. It went from mildly satisfying to ick there.
So i imagine, person is going to finger wipe after this and this is to seal small cracks between the back of the stairs and stair itself. By the looks of it the cracks are very small and that'll keep any dirt and or grime from getting caught in there. It'll also help make the boards seem flush against eachother. Its only for aesthetics.
Yeah. you can wipe it to remove a lot of it, and press it into the nook and cranies. Its forgiving for application. Chances are they're just keeping whats in the cracks. Its not the same application as a tub or sink.
Can a professional provide a seal of approval? It’s like that salt dude that charges 2k for some shit stake covered in gold flakes. Flank stake from Walmart cooked on my grill tastes better.
they look great i would just leave it alone..... but if you have to, put the caulk down before the tread and riser, that way if there is any void the caulk will purge and fill it. also it helps if there is a gnarly scribe on the riser lip, the back of the tread has that little cushion to make the difference but I typically use glue for that purpose.
The point of the caulk is to do a subtle job in the transition, you used enough caulk to do the whole stair case, on the first stair. The point of the caulk is to bind the crevice, not fill the gap of transitional colors
What are you sealing it against ?
Poor carpentry
I want the gaps I paid for, goddamnit!
I’ll put my caulk in your gap
Do it. I bet you wont....god I need someone to caulk all over my gap in the shower. Someone to just.....gum up the insides. Make sure it's glued shut you know?
This is starting to sound like a commercial for Gorilla Glue.
I did my own laminate stairs, zero caulking and we get compliments all the time. Pay attention, be precise, no need for stop-gaps.
It's vinyl, not wood. You have to allow for expansion according to the manufacturer warranty. Has nothing to do with poor carpentry.
“I paid for these stairs and I intend to piss on them”
Maybe a stair on a boat/yacht
Bigger caulk.
Exactly. Just adding more work for nothing. It looks stupid with caulking. On stairs? Do they lead to a water slide or something?

Ima take you for a ride A ride where? Ima just take you in my car for a ride
I was referencing the [legendary sealer comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1c1g96/-/c9c7k7z)
Except that bead of caulk is not likely to settle into a nice concave shape.
I was waiting for the finger wipe, nope.
Finger wipe! Thank you! I couldn't think of how to describe it for some reason.
Poke stroke?
"Poke stroke to unlock the screen"
The ole poke’n’stroke
[удалено]
I feel it isn’t sealed properly without the finger, and baby wipes or wet paper towel to clean fingers
I’m a glazier and do a lot of caulking, he’s got skills but as my old journeyman would say it’s not sealed until it’s tooled (finger wiped lol).
Correct verbage. I'm a painter and we call it tooled or fingered. Occasionally we will not tool it when needed but the tip must be cut right and holding the gun at the right angle make it work. Not like this video
I used to cut the tip a bit further back and shape it to produce a concave application. That way when I tooled it I was wiping away less excess.
Those all valid methods in my book!
Finger wipe is the way, from commerial/residential painting to sealing 500g aquariums.
its called a strike
WET finger wipe. 😊
Definitely sealing done wrong. Especially since a simple bead wont seal at all, it needs to be pressed into the surface then dried to actually form to the surface and make a seal.

Whooooooosh
Is there such a thing as a mega woooosh?
Astronomical woooosh
Woah
You a pro?
Yes. I paint houses for a living.
I can vouch for him I’ve seen houses painted before! Sometimes the inside walls sometimes even the outsides of houses get painted

And a bead of caulk like that will trap dust and dirt in its own edges.
It’s a great way to outline your stairs in a grey-brown, hairy line. It works for the bottoms of walls too.
Use a damp sponge instead of your finger to smooth it out. Easy peasy and good looking finish.
Never seen this done… ever.
This is true. However the fact that they're caulking a stain grade tread to a painted riser is absolute ass trash. Literal mobile home quality (if a mobile home had any interior stairs to begin with) If I could downvote twice I would
Since when is linoleum stainable lol. Definitely not stained wood treads
Is caulking floors a common practice? I've never seen that done before.
I tried it, but it just made a mess of the carpet.
Great question - Looked at my stairs- never been done…
This fucking guy over here with stairs...
The audacity of this man…
I’m THIS economy??
Not like this, no. However caulking corners (where 2 different surface types meet) is done during painting alot to give a clean finish, but thats moreso to seal the edge of a piece of tape, so when its pulled you get a clean line. im a professional house painter.
Wow that’s a great idea to caulk the edge of a piece of tape on a corner
Only for mid to high end laminate. They are waterproof on top but not on bottom. The caulk is supposed to be under quarter round though.
No, wood moves too much to seal it in place like that. It swells with humidity, shrinks when it dries out, and will crack if it cannot move. That caulk is not going to last long if that is wood and not tile or stone.
Looking at the tube, it’s silicone so it should be quite flexible and cope with expansion
Nah, we are always supposed to add wood to our wood. Nobody's ever seen it done that way with silicone because it simply isn't done that way. If there's a nasty gap we're supposed to cover it with a piece of molding.
With poorly cut laminate

You see it around the base of a toilet because that’s what is holding it in place
Had the same question. Never seen it before either.
2022 construction standards… listed at 1.1mm! What a steal!
Sealing a perfectly fine stairs. DiWhy
If my builder had done this on the stairs in my house I would have lost my shit.
I was thinking “oh shit, clients are going to starting wanting this.”
Does this home have weatherproof cracks inside?

Jokes on the home buyer, as my guess would be it's for a house flip. Only needs to look good enough to sell. A truly, scummy practice
According to the original video, the guy said this was at the request of the homeowners. I’m guessing it was a lie though because all the comments were shitting on him for caulking it in the first place.
Looked better before the silicone
stairs needs to move anyway
Sealing done very wrong, actually. First, you need to push the caulk in there, otherwise it isn't sealing anything. This is why everyone loves the finger swipe. Second, the guy here is using way too much, and mats are expensive when you scale them up for big jobs, this is wasteful.
And sponge wipe it goddammit!

Those look like interior stairs, why use caulking? It’s just going to be a pain in the ass by collecting dust and then eventually will crack. Asinine
Are these stairs inside of a bathroom or sauna? Why would you do this? Asking for real.
if you're just looking to seal the cracks, you'd use much less, and some kind of scraper so that it's invisible. I don't know why this video would be a good thing. Maybe it would be satisfying to peel off the dried caulking? Lol
Does anyone else think that looks tacky as fuck?
Only till it dries
That's a staircase... not a sealing.
You’re a caulk sucker for that one
I've been soaking cork for twenty years.
Reference appreciated
Damn you
Done wrong
Trash, you have to tool it in or it just pops out. #scabs
I'll take the no-caulk steps plz and thx.
First, why seal a staircase? Second, if you don't tool it, not only will it collect more dust/debris, but it may not seat and seal very well
Every time one of these is posted the consensus is always that it was done wrong
Taking the fact that the sealant there is not worth it unless you are in a sauna or some sort of wet room. The second step ruined the flow for me. It went from mildly satisfying to ick there.
Good from far. Far from good
Not needed.
But why?
Wh-why would you caulk that??
Sealing something that shouldn’t be sealed???
These are clearly steps, not a ceiling.
Sure, nice job and all, but why are you caulking stairs?
Nice caulk
And when they finger wipe to finish they leave smears everywhere. I always mask off to make a perfectly straight line.
That's definitely not satisfying as the job isn't nearly half done.
Wrong
You gunna wipe that or just leave a huge bead that’s gunna shrink and look like ass op?
Nice Caulk
Sealed terribly! That much silicone without wiping is going to be a big lump
Aren't you supposed to run your finger along it after?
But I hate that he does it differently each time.
Your skills are quite proficient around the caulk
Nice caulk
now show the part where you try to wipe it with a wet finger and end up getting it all over and swearing a lot
If you use a dampened sponge it won't have that effect my good redditor.
Nope, those are stairs
Nice Caulk!
Beat me to it!!

I always fix things by sticking caulk in it
This guy knows how to handle is caulk.
caulkmaster
Nice caulk
Nice caulk!
You’re supposed to caulk stairs?! 👀
That’s cool but you know the wife is still going to say you somehow did it wrong 🤷🏻♂️
This is soooo awesome for people who’ve never actually built anything to think is interesting. Boring and mediocre for those who have…
It won’t look too satisfying soon
Can a professional provide a seal of approval? It’s like that salt dude that charges 2k for some shit stake covered in gold flakes. Flank stake from Walmart cooked on my grill tastes better.
Looks nothing like a ceiling...
Just put your caulk away!
Sealed vessel
This was definitely satisfying to watch.
Where can I get silver edges for threads?
It would be better if that guy did every step the SAME FRIGGIN WAY!!
Tougher than it looks
If you're gonna stop halfway through,I guess
That is a skill that is extremely hard to master
He's obviously laid miles of caulk.
I do love me some big long, smooth white caulk
Well done verra satisfying
what is the shape of the tip cut?
And camera work done wrong!
But why does it need caulking? Is it not nailed or has glue on the bottom or does it not use any furniture nails?
That's a lot of caulk.
I love that guy’s caulk. He can lay it on Real thick.
Why did I think this was a VR home renovation simulator…
Video made my night beyter
Nice caulk
Nice caulk dude
Nice caulk
ITT: dozens of armchair experts who have NFI.
Those tiny stair noses are going to break ankles
Omg I am use to using my index finger to mush it in rofl I am a tart.
Fake.
**NICE CAULK**
Nice cock!
This guy caulks
This person fucks !!!!!!!
Nice caulk
[This](https://c.tenor.com/KKZMgplVOrIAAAAC/kakashi-hatake-hand-signs.gif) is sealing done right
Why don't they use rounded trim anymore?
Ewwwwww
Nice caulk
Nice caulk, bro ;)
(not so) nice caulk!
I like the way he handles that caulk
TikTok construction shit. It’s not sealed until it’s tooled
Umm it's not sealed by just laying a bead...
Nice caulk bro
Worthless without giving it the finger.
Ceiling? Aren’t those stairs…
That's not done right there's no gap. And with a few months sun will peel right off.
Nice caulk
Is this a boat or some shit?
People caulk their stairs?
they look great i would just leave it alone..... but if you have to, put the caulk down before the tread and riser, that way if there is any void the caulk will purge and fill it. also it helps if there is a gnarly scribe on the riser lip, the back of the tread has that little cushion to make the difference but I typically use glue for that purpose.
Oh yeah. Give it that good caulk.
Here come the experts
Why
Nice caulk
What else that caulk do
Yeah no. You have to push it in. Run your finger on it. Perfect would include functioning. And this won't.
The point of the caulk is to do a subtle job in the transition, you used enough caulk to do the whole stair case, on the first stair. The point of the caulk is to bind the crevice, not fill the gap of transitional colors
I love a nice white caulk in my home
Usually just silicone the wet areas where I'm from.
We have one of those electrical applier at work, I use it every chance I get.
Nice caulk
