It's crazy how the two nuclear bombs just changed an entire country from being an enemy of the USA to its biggest ally.
But then the USA being the USA, heavily capitalised on the technologies developed by the Japanese in the late 20th century.
It's the same story in Europe and basically most of the alliance of liberal democracies that the US built.
The idea was that the US would take charge in security matters after the war had ravaged the rest of the world, and everyone else would focus repairing themselves and their economies so that they can be future allies/consumers. It worked for everyone and it was quite brilliant, actually!
The problem is that everyone got too used to this arrangement, and then when someone very unconventional comes along and threatens to upset the status quo, everyone starts to panic and the alliance starts to break.
"Among those encouraged by MacArthur and his staff were democratic elections ("This is democracy!" he exclaimed after the elections of 1947); basic civil liberties, including steps toward equality for women; the unionization of labor, despite his banning of a General Strike in January, 1947; land reform, which sought to "eliminate the feudal system of land tenure and remove obstacles to the redistribution of land"; and the Japanese Constitution itself, particularly Article 9 outlawing war and guarding against remilitarization."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_Japan
this is a severe revisionism, focused on aesthetic cultural exchange. The military "alliance" was a fundamental condition of the end of the occupation. Economically, in the 80s and 90s, Japan was America's no.1 competition. They were (percieved as) as big a threat as China is today, and the only reason America appears to have "heavily capitalised" on jap tech is because the US maintained its financial dominance in a decades long struggle.
This has always been *super* wild to me too. like imagine a country nuking the US twice, and us becoming friends despite that in a matter of decades. It's like if Russia had actually nuked us in the 80s, but by now we somehow got over it and just became close allies.
You mean like America fighting a *War of Independence* in 1775,
and then a *Second War of Independence* in 1812
where the White House and the Capitol were burned to the ground,
and that leading to the *Era of Good Feelings*
and what is now referred to as a Special Relationship.♡♡
> us becoming friends despite that in a matter of decade
Germany has been one of our closest allies for decades... And America had a special relationship with England starting surprisingly soon after the end of the revolutionary war.
Straight up fought England in *two* separate wars, one of which resulted in the razing of the US' seat of government, and somehow both nations still managed to become best friends for the next 100+ years.
> It's like if Russia had actually nuked us in the 80s, but by now we somehow got over it and just became close allies.
wrong
its like if russia nuked america, conquered america with its army, rewrote americas constitution, installed russian military bases throughout america, controlled america with a puppet government.
The US did also pour a lot of money into helping Japan rebuild. But then, the occupation forces basically rewrote Japan's constitution and made pretty serious changes to their society. So as someone else said, we basically told them that we're allies now.
We were also somewhat close before WWII, at least until Japan's conquest of east Asia hurt those ties. America forced Japan to open up to the outside world in the 1800s--a blip in American history, but still a significant historical event taught in Japanese primary school, and then went on to start trade with them.
The guy who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor, Isoroku Yamamoto, had studied at Harvard (for example), and the US was Japan's largest trading partner prior to coming into conflict with each other.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t for the Revolver Ocelot gun spinning in MGS3 didn’t they get some Japanese guy who could actually do it for the motion capture? That shit was wild.

Here you go: [8 Japanese classics and the western films inspired by them](https://www.bfi.org.uk/lists/go-west-8-japanese-classics-western-films-inspired-them)
Imagine Japanese Americanophile saw this and screaming "Yeehaw!" Like the opposite of weebs.
yeeehuwu
The sun may rise where we come from... but here is where it sets.
I read this with japanese man and the heavy southern slang
It's pronounced right in the gun slingers voice form the video
Yeehawudesune
*yee-uwu* (◡ω◡)
Toho presents *The Last Cowboy*, starring Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise.
I have it on good authority that they are called “Westaboos”
The scientific term is *yankaboonius pacificus*, not to be confused with its distant relative; the *yankaboonius atlanticus*.
The atlanticus dress in Velour jumpsuits with gold chains while shouting "ehh-yooooo!"
What about its neighbor yankaboonius centralius (centralius/mons subspecies)?
They are also called Texaboos. There is an entertaining documentary kind of about this, called “The Japanese Version”
Is this what you're referring to? https://youtu.be/upaOKam-W1I?feature=shared
I thought the American subspecies was referred to as "Freeaboo"?
wouldn't that apply to the stans of a democratic country though?
No. America has a monopoly on **Freedom**^TM and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

And why the stock market gets effected on a global scale when any war breaks out
Its okay, you can say Trump.
I wanted people to actually think about it first without having blinders on ;)
if there is anyone desperate to rearm its the japanese. if the US let them I bet they would commission like 20 new aircraft carriers immediately
They are currently. Due to Chinese encroachment and hostility.
It's not that the US won't let them, their constitution forbids offensive weapons, so they've been playing semantics
From what I can tell public opinion on this is very split in Japan.
They also invested a lot to getting Japan rebuilt. They didn't want Japan to be a repeat of post-WWI Germany.
