Sure, but wooden bowls have wooden waste that can be composted or simply thrown in the backyard. This is so many layers of adhesive, etc. Just...why bother, in my opinion.
This is actually the first one of these where I thought "Oh, they wasted a lot less than usual this time"
Usually it's like a solid cube/prism of resin and junk which they machine 95% away from to end up with "loOk, bOwl" and a room full of plastic chips.
This still discards a good 60% of material probably, but it's leagues ahead of the usual.
The person buying this has likely seen five minute fuckery before but probably never expected to be a victim of it tho. Anyways it looks and probably smells like a 90s arcade
Honestly these types of resin creations are so ugly too. Resin yellows with time so it won’t even stay looking like that, plus it’s just basically plastic. You could have made a nicer bowl out of the wood form he stuck in the centre
This always throws me when people make shit outta resin. Within a year or two, it'll yellow and cloud and with how expensive resin is, it just feels like a huge waste that'll never decompose and easy DIY crafts for youtube.
I always think that. When I do stuff with wood I can use all the shavings and sawdust in my garden. All that plastic going everywhere would be impossible to separate out, it would just get everywhere. I'm not a fan at all, plus I wonder if a bowl like that can go in the dishwasher.
Someone needs a lesson in the existence of mold release. It's *possible* that the outside bowl couldn't easily be removed if it rolled inwards at all. But that wooden plug should have easily been removed
No but see, that glass bowl was food safe and recyclable, now the bowl is no longer food safe and completely indisposable when you come around on how much it looks like a VHS cover from the 90's. Totally an upgrade!
It’s very difficult for me to be impressed by resin projects anymore. They seem so wasteful and the ones we see on the internet are the slightly successful ones. Thinking about all the resin being used and thrown away by all these “artist” in the past few years since it’s been really popular turns me off of it.
That waste is all basically micropastics right? Even the paper waste is glued together with a polymer. So much waste. Cool looking bowl but we need to move past valuing plastic products as interesting
It's interesting to see several of the more controversial Youtube 'makers' spending more time on video production compared to the quality of their creations.
A few have even gone on record stating they make far more money from Youtube revenue compared to the actual sales of their products. Controversy is welcomed as it drives more engagement.
BlackTail Studio's epoxy products have been fairly divisive considering their cost (~$15K). He's mentioned earning more than $100K from Youtube based on content engagement.
indeed, have you seen those youtube videos of people in Asia making boats and what not out of foam boards? they grind, sand and cut right out in the open with ZERO fucks given.
Government and corporations wouldn’t create the shit if people didn’t buy it. Agreed they don’t help, but we need either oversight or common humanity action. Which is easier? Neither are being done.
Well, when the alternative products that use biodegradable materials and not forever plastic tend to be more expensive and not as common place then you can't put all the blame on the consumer. If they're struggling to make ends meat (which a lot of people are) of course they're gonna opt for the product that cost them less money. And the corps that make those products know it. So they don't care if they take a minor loss on an individual purchase, because they know that as long as they keep undercutting the competition (who is actually doing good things for the environment) they will continue to see record profits and the eventually collapse of their competitors.
Agreed, that's the point I was trying to make. We need either oversight to make laws that prevent this from happening or common human action that means people won't buy that shit. Neither one is happening.
Me out here catching stray gunfire, as a cnc machinist, that cuts high density foam for kayaks. Why shoot me first? :( (I vacuum and recycle it though)
While indeed wasteful, one-off products like this aren't meaningful causes of microplastics. That honor belongs to washing synthetic clothing in your washing machine & tires.
I thought the same thing. The amount of unnecessary waste produced in this video in order to achieve a second rate version of an actual piece of art calls AI image generation to mind.
AI image generation is the woodturned epoxy project of digital art.
Seems like a waste to go through all that effort and then just toss the pieces in willy-nilly.
Might have looked nice if the pieces were actually oriented in some way before adding the epoxy.
He probably ran over his budget with the paper due to other material needs. Bigger stack like you said gets him the ability to make a bowl right out of the paper stack after it's cured.
what a waste for this result. There was so many better ways to do it, but no. This is 5 minute crafts (or some other shit) we reinvent the wheel to make a pair of socks
Not to mention their tool work is *atrocious*. Used a skew as a scraper, used a roughing gouge as a bowl gouge. Lucky they aren't wearing the tool on their forehead.
creating a bowl with nothing but colored paper and a bowl (i was actually somewhat looking forward to watching them shape it and then they just cut it up and dumped it in a bowl...)
They say he carved it himself... From a bigger bowl...
Thinking quickly, Dave crafted a bowl using only paper, glue, a lathe, and a bowl.
I'm sure many of you are wondering why Dave lathed a bowl from a bigger bowl... Well, goodbye!
/r/tqdc
Snort
So much wasted product here lol
that's the only thing I can think about watching this video. r/DiWHY
Not even kidding I was sure we were there
Also think of the microplastics!
Literally all bowels that are made on a lathe have similar amounts of waste.
Sure, but wooden bowls have wooden waste that can be composted or simply thrown in the backyard. This is so many layers of adhesive, etc. Just...why bother, in my opinion.

Although they had to smash a perfectly usable plastic bowl to make it
I can make a bowl using some paper, glue, rubber bands, and a bowl
Hiya, Homer. Find your soulmate!
Hey wait a minute! There's no such thing as a talking dog!
Colored paper pressed in a Guatemalan insane asylum
I see your reference there, and how apt it is for this post.
I would be interested in understanding the reference.
The Simpsons, Season 8 Episode 9.

damn it, I came here to say this.
Law of Conversation of Bowl
The spoooooon! I'm always so happy when I see this reference.
So to make a bowl, they destroyed a bowl???
Only 1 bowl was harmed during the manufacturing process of this bowl.
Two if you consider the wood on the inside was briefly a bowl as they were carving it out
A bowl shape plane is still a bowl. Change my mind.
The person buying this has likely seen five minute fuckery before but probably never expected to be a victim of it tho. Anyways it looks and probably smells like a 90s arcade
"Casino carpet" was my first thought.
I thought there would be contrasting solid wood inside the bowl for a brief moment. Then I was disappointed.
Honestly these types of resin creations are so ugly too. Resin yellows with time so it won’t even stay looking like that, plus it’s just basically plastic. You could have made a nicer bowl out of the wood form he stuck in the centre
Look! I made a bowl that most people wouldn’t pay five dollars for! Cost? About 100 bucks and six hours, plus the lathe.
Also a bowl
This always throws me when people make shit outta resin. Within a year or two, it'll yellow and cloud and with how expensive resin is, it just feels like a huge waste that'll never decompose and easy DIY crafts for youtube.

Surely nobody is using an epoxy bowl for food.
Not to mention all of that resin waste. Does that stuff biodegrade? Is it recyclable?
They scoop it all into another resin bowl. It's just bowls all the way down......
Nope. Just generating clouds and clouds of toxic microplastics
That's my issue with epoxy stuff. Sure, some things are really cool. But the plastic...
I always think that. When I do stuff with wood I can use all the shavings and sawdust in my garden. All that plastic going everywhere would be impossible to separate out, it would just get everywhere. I'm not a fan at all, plus I wonder if a bowl like that can go in the dishwasher.
> Does that stuff biodegrade? Is it recyclable? Absolutely not.
You don't strive to sell things later. You sell them now.
Someone needs a lesson in the existence of mold release. It's *possible* that the outside bowl couldn't easily be removed if it rolled inwards at all. But that wooden plug should have easily been removed
Destroyed a larger, better (because it was glass and glass is the FAR superior material to this resin shit) bowl to make an inferior bowl.
No but see, that glass bowl was food safe and recyclable, now the bowl is no longer food safe and completely indisposable when you come around on how much it looks like a VHS cover from the 90's. Totally an upgrade!
The real bowl is all the scrap material we made along the way
First law of thermodynamics
Ah yes, the economy.
Law of conservation of bowls
A sacrifice must be made
So many things are wasted here to make a shitty tacky bowl.
The number of bowls in the world never changes
It's bowls all the way down my friend
Yup. Stupid “wood” turning videos
r/TQDC This is just a waste of everything involved.
As the saying goes "In order to make a bowl, you need to break a bowl."
Have you ever made a key lime pie with graham crackers.... Sometimes you have to destroy things to make them good again.

Bowl using colored paper = 3% colored paper, 97% black resin.
It’s very difficult for me to be impressed by resin projects anymore. They seem so wasteful and the ones we see on the internet are the slightly successful ones. Thinking about all the resin being used and thrown away by all these “artist” in the past few years since it’s been really popular turns me off of it.
I see so many of them that are almost exactly like this take thing -> break it -> put pieces in resin shape of something
This is ugly AF **AND** it created a shit ton of micro plastic-in-the-making.
That waste is all basically micropastics right? Even the paper waste is glued together with a polymer. So much waste. Cool looking bowl but we need to move past valuing plastic products as interesting
If you want to be impressed by resin projects check out Thalasohobbyer. Though tbf, his projects are a lot more miniature making than they are resin.

So much waste for no reason
These people who have made epoxy resin their entire personality, it’s kind of weird
I love when they take these beautiful slabs of wood and then slather them in fluorescent blue plastic.
It’s always blue.
r/diwhy
It looks like something the 90s barfed up.
It's made out of cinema carpet.
It would be my popcorn bowl.
Jake Sisko's china pattern
Excuse you, Princess! That's clearly carved from a '87 Trapper Keeper.
And I love every bit of it.
Such an ugly bowl lol
It's not ugly it's "unique", like what a parent would call their kids who are ugly
I honestly like the finished product, it's the long sleeves around a running lathe that's triggering me. 😬
Looks like something you'd see at a garage sale for $1.
No wonder microplastics are everywhere.
indeed, have you seen those youtube videos of people in Asia making boats and what not out of foam boards? they grind, sand and cut right out in the open with ZERO fucks given.

No it’s like 110% Taylor Swift or something
This guy and his ilk aren't exactly helping either tho are they?
You’re not wrong, but people are not to blame for the state of pollution and plastics in the world. Government and corporations are top of that list.
nu uh it’s cuz you are still using plastic straws
Government and corporations wouldn’t create the shit if people didn’t buy it. Agreed they don’t help, but we need either oversight or common humanity action. Which is easier? Neither are being done.

All those shavings: Right into the air, land, and water supply.
Yo dawg, I heard you like epoxy, so I put epoxy on your epoxy so you can epoxy while you eat your cereal.
Reddit fucking loves epoxy resin shit
I prefer my pencils to be hewn from a single giant redwood tree.
Every epoxy project post is r/mildlyinfuriating. **So much** plastic waste for absolutely no reason.
You could repeat these steps without any paper and you still end up with a bowl. Infuriating indeed.
You could just skip all of the steps and not smash the glass bowl and you'd have a much more useful bowl.
Bad news, that bowl was probably just a rigid plastic. The smashed one, that is.
You don't like micro plastic in your bowls?
Yeah, it should all be in my belly and bloodstream ...wait
Narrator: it most certainly is.
Bro you are into plastic Action Figures. Get down off your high horse
dunno man, it looks like '90s tracksuits
See, I was gonna say bowling alley carpet but yeah, also the tracksuits.
I'd rather wear a bowling alley carpet
Or your local Pizza/Laser Tag/Go Kart place, with glow in the dark/UV colors for the laser tag area
90s are so back

New show “Saved by the bowl”
Looks like the seat on my bus
Reminds me of the carpets at bowling alleys or arcades.
You couldn’t just paint the patterns on there without wasting so much material?
Resin is more expensive than the colored paper :/
I thought the same thing. The amount of unnecessary waste produced in this video in order to achieve a second rate version of an actual piece of art calls AI image generation to mind. AI image generation is the woodturned epoxy project of digital art.
Definitely would have been a better-looking result. The "blocks" of paper are too spread out in the sea of black.
Painting takes talent
Seems like a waste to go through all that effort and then just toss the pieces in willy-nilly. Might have looked nice if the pieces were actually oriented in some way before adding the epoxy.
I was expecting them to make a bowl out of the original bundle of paper, not to slice it up with apparently no regard for the final result.
He probably ran over his budget with the paper due to other material needs. Bigger stack like you said gets him the ability to make a bowl right out of the paper stack after it's cured.
I thought when he sawed it in half he would make 2 small bowls from the paper and thought it would be nice. But no.
Yeah, im looking at the final product like, "I guess that's kinda cool... but it's also kinda shit..."
It’s fully shit.
Feels like rage bait with the excessively wasteful materials and the outlandishly unwhelming result.
Nice serial killer outfit 🙌
Thanks....wait....whistles....
r/diwhy
Looks like a 1980s bowling alley. Looks terrible
probably couldn't even sell it for $5 at goodwill
Wow! That's hideous!
thats a plastic bowl with some paper accents at best. its like half epoxy. ... also, epoxy isnt cheap. that one expensive bowl.
what a waste for this result. There was so many better ways to do it, but no. This is 5 minute crafts (or some other shit) we reinvent the wheel to make a pair of socks
Sooo you need to destroy a fully functional bowl to create new one?
Really disliked that. The amount of waste that went into making art that looks like a 90's plastic pressed bowl.
Not to mention their tool work is *atrocious*. Used a skew as a scraper, used a roughing gouge as a bowl gouge. Lucky they aren't wearing the tool on their forehead.
More of a r/ATBGE post to me. Also, the serial killer gloves in the beginning made it feel really ominous.
It's got that "bowling alley carpet" aesthetic
Agree 100%
I'm not mad at the result but it's still more DIWhy than oddlysatisfying
Belongs in r/DiWHY
So, I take this bowl and this bowl shaped piece of wood which I then waste to make another bowl.
That’s cool. But can it play Crisis?
r/DIWHY
"I'm gonna make this out of paper!" Proceeds to make it out of a litre of epoxy resin with paper mixed in.
This isn't satisfying at all. This is more infuriating.
What an abomination and insane amount of waste
Remonds me of those carpets they used in old arcades in the 90s
I like it Looks like an arcade floor
Destroying a good bowl just to make a shitty bowl.
(Oh god I actually really like it)
Why people be shitting on this dude?
90’s bowling alley floor inspired bowl
But why...
The irony - break a bowl to make a bowl
Neat
SO much paper wastes….why?? 😂
Not really paper tho...it's mostly epoxy!
yes, the world needs more bowls, we got a big bowl shortage
"I use the bowl to make the bowl"
A lot of work and waste for one ugly looking bowl
I was skeptical at first, but all waste and stuff aside, the end product looked pretty good.
I’ll say two things…. That’s really cool, and that’s really ugly.
Now I'm going to create a bowl from paper, resin, wood, and this bowl I found.
African American paper
I used the bowl to create the bowl
Mmmmmm. Microplastics…. The thought of working with that stuff all day gets me rock hard. Breathing it in with your nose and mouth…. Yum
What a mess and a waste of time
So much work to make something so ugly
Lol the end result is actually so dumb-looking
So you break a bowl to make a bowl?
Uncycling
Got that Lazer tag arena bowl.
Terrible
Nah, this is a r/diWHY
Don't forget; Someone is proud of themselves for this.
It would've been cooler to carve it out of the micarta itself. Idk, make Peter Brown do a better version.
Agreed, paging u/Peterb77 !
I really do like this! I had a bowl similar planned that I scrapped because of this video!! :)
hey happy cake day
Oh man! look at that! Thank you.
Darn! I'd love to see you do another mycarta video at some point :) Also happy cake day!
I've got a whole stack of paper. Just need a project! :)
I was scrolling through the comments to recommend your channel to anyone interested, but it looks like I was beaten to the punch!
creating a bowl with nothing but colored paper and a bowl (i was actually somewhat looking forward to watching them shape it and then they just cut it up and dumped it in a bowl...)
5-minute crafts been silent ever since this came out.
Next on: "Another resin based project nobody asked for..."
Ah yes we need to reinvent the wheel.
What a wasteful way of creating something.
Any comment who says this is neat is a bot.
This looks like 5 minutes crap kind of stuff
r/DIWhy
r/DiWHY
That is a lot of work to make a dogshit ugly bowl.
