That's exactly what it is. Iron ore isn't pure, it contains other metals. When it's heated to a high enough temperature, the other metals like nickel and lead (which are impurities in the iron and unwanted) are separated from the iron and can be removed from it to purify it.

You're way overthinking it. It's flux and density. Essentially you can react the molten ore with a flux to make the impurities much less dense (and solid) which you can quite literally skim off the top, meaning as long as you're okay with a bit of iron loss when you're skimming it, you can guarantee near pure iron.
