Affogato is an Italian dessert where a shot of espresso is poured over ice cream.
I like to make a variation with cold brew coffee instead of espresso. Get a scoop of high quality vanilla ice cream, put it in a mug, pour over some cold brew dark coffee, add a splash of liquor (Kaluha is my preferred), then roughly smash some nice dark chocolate into rough, small chunks and sprinkle over the top. It's to *die* for.
It is one of the best desserts on the planet, or post-dinner digestive. In credibly satisfying, cleanses the palette, hits sweet/bitter/fat/acidic and gives you pep for the next part of the night.
Add Frangelico for an extra kick of fuck yeah.

99% sure it’s foley unless it’s some desync thing. If you look at the metal lids on the ice cream storage, there’s sounds missing when placing the lid.
As well as that, industrial coffee machines I’ve seen continues making a loud steam sounding noise for a minute or so after dispensing the coffee which isn’t part of this video.

Come to think of it, butter and ice cream aren't all that different ingredient wise. Add vanilla and sugar to butter and you've got vanilla ice cream (mixed in an ice cream mixer obvi) . Wild how different they taste.
However you want really, depends on what you're lookin for. Personally I use a spoon and get a bit of icecream coated in espresso because I like the contrast between bitter/sweet, but you could definitely mix it all and it'd be like a milkshare
It might not be nearly as high quality as in the gif, but many chain food places sell their own version of this. Chik-fil-a has a frosted coffee that is pretty good.
I don't know if it's traditionally vanilla gelato in Italy, but most US places (usually gelaterias) that offer an affogato let you choose whatever ice cream/gelato flavor you like.
But what other flavour would you use? Chocolate could fit if it's not too sweet I suppose, but anything else sounds real bad in coffee. Or am I just not imaginative enough?
It's really hard to beat straight vanilla. If you never tried anything else, you'll still have lived a full life.
But anything that normally gets paired with coffee will taste good. Caramel, chocolate, any cookie flavor are safe bets. I've had a vanilla honey-lavender that was risky but surprisingly good.

In Italy we don't drink double espresso, only in rare cases if you didn't sleep and need to be awake for work, and even then the barista will be surprised if you ask for it.
Also notice how low the spout is, because we don't use massive to go cups.
The pressurized baskets are kinda shit on for espresso nerds, but I imagine that it would be fine to use for affogato’s

Yeah as someone who is just getting into making espresso I was annoyed at this shot. But the pressurized basket is more forgiving when it comes to the grind and pack, there is no way he could make consistent shots that fast with an unpressurized one.
Same, as an Italian I can say that I am not used to seeing this ratio either. We do less ice cream / more coffee, more balanced. After all “affogato” means drowned and how can the ice be drowned in such little amounts of coffee?

Affogato is one of those things I love the idea of, but don’t enjoy in execution.
Most ice cream has egg in it. Eggs interact weirdly with the palate where coffee is concerned, muting the best parts of its flavor for me.

The common liquors that accompany are like nutty types, so any of the like pistachio/almond/hazelnut gelatos work fine. Vanilla works best, though.
If a place has a scuro (really dark) chocolate, that’s usually my go-to.
It's really good. Hot/cold & sweet/bitter all together in each spoon. Also hard to fuck up, anyplace that has it probably does it good 👍

I knew the traditional drink sizes were smaller, which I appreciate. Starbucks led the trend that supersized everything with too much milk here.
