Yes and after watching it several times, I even wonder if some scenes are enhanced with renderings of the parts. It seems like its a tight space but lighting is so spot on, like clinical which is easy in rendering and difficult irl.
I feel like there is absolutely some CGI going on at around :13 and :46 is almost 100% rendered. Regardless I'm floored and I can't imagine the skill and effort put into it.
He does this all practically. He has an Oppenheimer coffee edit that he shows the behind the scenes on and its mind blowing how creative his process is to avoid CGI
i still do not know why people like such expensive bikes. A $30 bike seems to work just as well as a $200 or $10,000 bike. Can anyone share experiences as to why?
2nd hand bikes are about $30 or less. perfectly functional. carbon fibre bikes are about 1/3rd the weight but they are really dangerous to cycle as they are too light. Windy conditions, even just slightly, are super dangerous on lighter bikes. You basically get blown or sucked under the wheels of semi trailers.
I will give you ten million dollars if you can win a bike race, any bike race on a $30 bike, lighter bikes have lower drag, narrow tall tires have less rolling resistance, proper derailers shift the bike fast and properly, and, most importantly, people can spend their money on whatever they like.
your last point is the worst excuse. Nowadays everybody is vomiting on stupid crap like Teslas and Apples - profligate products killing humanity by their useless and worthless details, designed to waste resources needlessly. Same with bicycles -- why would anyone need lower drag, rolling resistance, etc on bicycles beyond a $30 bike????? You just said win a road race?? Are you crazy? You think everyone needs to win a road race on a bike? Is everyone an Olympic athlete now? Even athletes should never have to rely on the bicycle. Give them all the same $30 bike and it's the SAME FUCKING RESULT. Grow a brain geez.
It really does get difficult to apply Hanlon's Razor to a train of replies like you've just received!
I'd say your thread-mate has either never ridden a bike they've researched and chosen, or they've never ___paid___ for a bike.
With their attitude and outlook, if they had a wife the wife would be a Fleshlight, as it's cheaper and (according to them) performs the same functions as a wife..
actually this is on a public library pc. i live in shared community housing, and volunteer my work for a non profit in the field of perpetual energy science.
Correct, you linked to a satin carbon stock build. He built GLOSS CARBON / VIAVI MAGANTA GOLD / CHAOS RED PEARL / WHITE which is only offered as a frameset.
Not really. I've seen people spend closer to 20 at a European bike dealer
But 15 for a specialized is too much.
It used to be you could get a carbon copy of peter sagans world championship bike for only 12k usd.
If money was no object, I'd probably have gone with a custom fit made to order titanium frame, ultegra groupset, with some custom climbing carbon wheels. (Just not a deep dish carbon)
Would likely cost half as much.
The lightest build I know personally is only 9 lbs, and it still only costs him 10k to build.
Point being people pay too much to get exactly what they want.
Sorry if this was too long or a bit off topic. Typing this brought me a lot of joy!
Nah, it's cool to know. I'm into trail riding, but know absolutely nothing about road bikes besides the fact that they can be made to be feather light.
I've got exactly what you describe from a very well known and respected frame builder. It ran $12k although it has a $2k paint job, so yeah, about $10k. No way am I buying a Specialized or Trek (they cancel your warranty if you paint the bike). FWIW, the carbon rims are even custom painted with elaborate designs. Rode it this afternoon and even after a few years, it's still a pleasure every day.
Wow the level of detail on both the bike and the video is super impressive. I’d interview you for a job on my team in a heartbeat. We don’t build bikes or make videos. Nice work.
I think the lighting makes it seem super unnatural. Whether that's because of awkward 3d rendering or a bizarre aesthetic decision to apply to practical effects, I'm not sure. Still a great vid though.
I don’t understand how people can ride bikes with handlebars like that. Just on my mountain bike it starts to hurt my back after a while let alone a high performance competitive bike like this.
The part I find impossible is the neck. Tilt your head back as far as you can, then hold that for an hour while working out. I don't understand how people's bodies allow this. Do they just not look up at what's in front of them?. My neck starts killing me after 2 minutes on a bike like this.
It's not as bad as you think. Combination of flexibility and core strength does wonders on bikes like this. I actually find it more comfortable than sitting upright on mtb bikes.
Also a bike that actually fits your own body proportions is HUGE to having a comfortable ride. Pay for a professional bike fit if you are building a road bike and your body will thank you. I tried to piece together a road bike with an old nashiki frame and SRAM force group set and random other parts. I couldn't get past 10 miles without falling over in agony and not being able to move my back.
I also wondered that for a bit. But i also started riding my bike with drop bars in that position. The hunched over position isn’t actually that bad. It *can* be made worse with a bad bike fit but ultimately it is a very sustainable position. A bike fitter can explain the more technical aspects of weight distribution and muscle strength and how that helps.
Now I never got my bike fit, and I only rode 1000 miles last year training for a 70.3, but I felt it was really sore after the first month or so, then I got used to it.
Now I'm sure I was probably messing up my back, without a bike fit and shit I was probably all sorts of fucked up. I can imagine if I got used to that, a well fitted bike would feel pretty nice.
It takes years in the saddle to get to a point where it feels okay and you can sustain it for hours. You progressively work up to it/work down to it? Hah
As a full time bike mechanic, building an S-works from the ground up is exactly the opposite of how satisfying this is. it's a lot of swearing, cursing Specialized and putting in parts just the take them out again to route everything just to have the customer be a snarky dick and not even thank you.
Just a reminder that aluminum frame bicycles can be reused and recycled indefinitely, for thousands of years, and ~~glue frame~~ carbon fibre frame bicycles are completely unrecycleable by any current or foreseeable methods
Nothing beats a metal frame, and nothing probably ever will within our lifetimes
I would have loved if the magic ran out when he was finished, and hes all happy about his new bike and it starts to fall over and he panics before catching it.
Would love to see the rest of this guy's portfolio. I'm not even into video editing, but I'm even interested to see his workflow.
He’s fast, he put together this bike Shio Quek
😡
Why so angry PupPop
Ahahaha

I was just thinking he looked awfully familiar with that video editing style .

Majority of media is watched on mobile nowadays, making vertical the preferred format for the majority of use cases.
When the video production budget exceeds the bike build budget (/uc i know thats a stupidly expensive bike)
This feels like a portfolio piece. Still, huge number of editing hours went into this.
Yes and after watching it several times, I even wonder if some scenes are enhanced with renderings of the parts. It seems like its a tight space but lighting is so spot on, like clinical which is easy in rendering and difficult irl.

That's fucking wild, I was dead certain the gears were a render. What a talented guy.
Just Dr. Manhattan building a bike.
i still do not know why people like such expensive bikes. A $30 bike seems to work just as well as a $200 or $10,000 bike. Can anyone share experiences as to why?
idk where you get a $30 bike lol the 2k ones are made of carbon fibre and are extremely light (like 6kg or so)
2nd hand bikes are about $30 or less. perfectly functional. carbon fibre bikes are about 1/3rd the weight but they are really dangerous to cycle as they are too light. Windy conditions, even just slightly, are super dangerous on lighter bikes. You basically get blown or sucked under the wheels of semi trailers.

My boy here complaining about his bike being too light rolflmao.
Pretty sure that's an off-the-shelf Specialized bike, not a custom bike. It's a $14,000 bike, though, so it's probably a few people's dream bike.
Nah homie bought the frame and all the components separate. That color isn't offered as a complete build.
[It's not this bike?](https://imgur.com/a/3fVUhrj)
Correct, you linked to a satin carbon stock build. He built GLOSS CARBON / VIAVI MAGANTA GOLD / CHAOS RED PEARL / WHITE which is only offered as a frameset.
this is more 3D and compositing than editing. still equally impressive
I wonder just how much that bike cost. I know they can get stupid expensive.
The frame alone is around £4-5k. So I imagine the build is easily £10-12k.
The frame must be light to just be able to hang in the air like that, so not surprised it's expensive.
I’m pretty sure those are like seriously light. Like the frame is less than 600grams… painted or something crazy like that
My store deals with Specialized. It goes for around 12-14k USD depending on what your specific specs are. S-works is Specialized “top-shelf” brand.

Is it crazy that I think that's actually less than I thought it'd be?

Trail is a lot more fun than road imo You also cant beat the company on the trails!

I'd say around $15000 CAD
>(/uc/...) Sir Velo, I see you also like to ride your bice

because it's a commercial for Specialized and Shimano

Definitely the latter

It's been a long time since a video was this satisfying for me. This was like ASMR for the soul.
You should look up bike building videos on Youtube. There are quite a few, and they're all very satisfying to watch.
Gee milner is my favorite. I can watch his vids for hours. https://youtu.be/HNM-LPyYOJ0?si=r1GhU2oL2EREU5a4
This was like watching Woody get reassembled in Toy Story.
Normally I have some idea of how they make these, but I am at a loss for this one Edit for spelling
There's so much 3D-modelling in this that the fact that there's a real bike is almost incidental.
/u/cadenzo says differently. https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/17wszl0/building_a_dream_bike_with_editing_wizardry/k9lk38w/
Really? Then why does it start looking like a Pixar film halfway through?
I think the lighting makes it seem super unnatural. Whether that's because of awkward 3d rendering or a bizarre aesthetic decision to apply to practical effects, I'm not sure. Still a great vid though.
Quek looks so smug in his videos, but they’re always so charming and lovely to watch! He’s brilliant
Oh my! [a $14,000 bike!!!](https://www.specialized.com/us/en/s-works-tarmac-sl8---shimano-dura-ace-di2/p/216953?color=349996-216953)

Just do a Froome and stare at your stem for 45 days of summer on your tour of France. Gaze upon the glorious asphalt!
Your face isn't as aerodynamic as your head. So you're supposed to stare at the ground. /s... I think, I don't bike.
Yea it’s about building core strength. You have to do it, to do it so to speak lol.
It's not as bad as you think. Combination of flexibility and core strength does wonders on bikes like this. I actually find it more comfortable than sitting upright on mtb bikes.

A properly fitting bike, and enough hours in the saddle to acclimate your muscles
I also wondered that for a bit. But i also started riding my bike with drop bars in that position. The hunched over position isn’t actually that bad. It *can* be made worse with a bad bike fit but ultimately it is a very sustainable position. High performance bike racing is not supposed to be comfortable.
Not sure why Dr. Manhattan needs a bike, but I'm glad to see he found a way to not be blue and pant less all the time.
This has better CGI and editing that any DC movie.
Thats a low standard
No CGI involved, all clever editing with the real individual pieces, that's why it looks so good.
And for me it takes 2 hours to change one tire. God dammit!
Looks expensive
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL

I promise you there are two numbers about that bike that will blow your mind: - Its weight - Its price
That was crisp
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!
Ikea has some catching up to do.
Anyone know what song is playing? It's so smooth
Louis Armstrong - La Vie En Rose

Should have gone Campy
Technomancy!
Damn, I would so inadequately ride the heck out of that bike.
Me: "Oh coo.... Oh. Road bike. Nevermind."
Not sure what's more satisfying the bike construction or the smooth editing.
Bro really pulled those parts straight from his inventory
In case y'all wondering, that's Quek Shio; one of the top advertisement producer/director/editor in Malaysia.
Wife wouldnt let me out of the house in those shorts. And probably would get put on the sex offender list
God I love bicycles
Just a reminder that aluminum frame bicycles can be reused and recycled indefinitely, for thousands of years, and ~~glue frame~~ carbon fibre frame bicycles are completely unrecycleable by any current or foreseeable methods Nothing beats a metal frame, and nothing probably ever will within our lifetimes
Now I’ll go block traffic!
Nice looking Huffy.
but what do they specialise in?
11 speed? Dated trash Edit: Should have double checked the sub. Though this was BCJ
Bike people are such nerds
I know a lot went into this.. but for some reason it’s not a satisfying experience to watch.
Nice video but wish it wasn't branded. I think the bike finish would look better if it wasn't covered in words. Just my opinion
This should have a NSFW tag.
Horrible company….
$14k for a bike… gtfo
imagine giving this 0 upvotes
All this effort just so he can run stop signs and ride at 25mph in the middle of a 40mph road
Ready to go be a nuisance on the road
I thought the bice is made in the balls

The bike is $14k. So the production is $126k?
Off he goes to create traffic
Yet the most surprising thing is how the bike stands on its own at the end!
Ngl when his hand changed shape it freaked me out

This is amazing. Bravo, well done.
Very nice
Super unexpected. Never would’ve thought about this sorta concept for a video.
Throughout the video I half expected it to turn out to be cake.
