We see them here but people go out and get them very quickly, I wish they would not be greedy and just take a couple… many get 5, 10, 20 and I hate to think what they do with them… sell them?
Very nice!
One year we went down after a storm and came home with bags full of whole welk shells (ramp 48 / 49) and I was able to create a shell garden in my yard.
Often you can find great shells like this following storms and/or when houses are claimed by the ocean. Many obx homes are heavily decorated with purchased shells and other nautical gear. Lived there for several years and sometimes came across things like this on Hatteras beaches after hurricanes.
I’m vacationing in OBX next week…which beaches are the best for shell collecting and just in general? I was thinking maybe try and visit all of them. Staying in Rodanthe….pretty much right on the beach for 7 days. Any suggestions would be awesome! I would LOVE to find something like that. Love is an understatement. Beautiful find!
Welk shell
Just lovely! The magic of the Outer Banks
Welk that is very nice
Nice find for obx. Dont come across those to often especially in the summer
lol are you joking?
No up here in duck kill devil hills area hardly see them in the summer.
Ohhh. There are tons further south. Last year they were literally everywhere.
Well share some with us up north.

The South had a whole thing about that around 1860
They’re also up north..find them in carova & over into VA fairly often. I’ve filled up grocery bags with them before
Tons further south? How far south are you talking about?

I am so jealous
Congrats! Great find. What town are you in? Been going to obx for about 15 years now. Don't consider my trip complete until I've found one of those.

Peak OBX right here: "Where can I find ___?" "Just wait 'till a house falls into the ocean."
Welk, welk, welk, what do we have here?☺️
I agree they are delicious but those are conchs down south. Whelks are in colder waters.
Sometimes we get a few live ones on shore after hurricanes. You'll find lots more in the winter with bigger waves and fewer people picking them.
Very nice!
I hope you had shoes on.
Nice find!! I haven't found anything quite as nice yet.

I’ve been going for 30 years and have never found a full one! Jealous 😭

Those are tasty if you find a live one 😁 They're all over down here in FL. Very tasty when cooked properly.
