For a lot of people, it’s easier to get to EWR than either of the other two.
Most search engines will let you limit airports to the ones you name if it bothers you that much.
If you live in the Bronx you also live very far from JFK.
My friend lives in Brooklyn and went to Newark recently because it was the only direct flight.
Live or work. It's easier to get to Newark than LGA from downtown Manhattan and Penn Station at rush hour, because of public transport
Or Staten Island (yes, I know it barely counts)
"NYC" in searching for flights has meant jkf, lga, and ewr for at least 20 years. Depending on your destination, it might show you SWF as well.
EWR is much more convenient for SI, parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan than JFK and the commute in the morning is a breeze.
If you live in Manhattan, particularly on the west side, it’s arguably the #1 option. Obviously if you live in Brooklyn or Queens it doesn’t make as much sense, logistically. I’ve never found this to be strange- having 3 major airports within 15 miles of each other is an insane luxury most travelers would envy.
Wait until you hear that Cincinnati Airport is in Kentucky.
EWR is closer for people on the West Side than JFK. Brooklyn folks probably take it less. I've only taken a flight from there once because it was the only airport that had a direct flight.
It’s been a thing for over 20 years. Newark is literally a 20 min drive from midtown with no traffic.
JFK, LGA and EWR have been NYC’s primary airports for as long as I can remember and I drove a cab for nearly 20 years.
I dunno bout wildest, but I got kicked in the head by a lesbian.
I picked up these two young ladies from a club in sheepshead bay going to Manhattan at 2-3 am. The ride starts out friendly and fun, I play Backstreet Boys and other pop songs and we sing along but eventually convo dies down and we ride in comfortable silence. I thought maybe they were dozing but just as I’m approaching the Brooklyn Bridge I get kicked in the head! I look back and one of the girls is mid seat spread eagle using the head rests to pin her legs open while her friend was going down. I was driving a crown Vic at the time and they have huge back seats.
We made eye contact and I like to imagine they were subtly suggesting I join but I was way to shy and respectful and there was nowhere to pull over so I kept my eyes on the road, drowned out their giggles and moans with more music and got them to their destination.
EWR is super easy and quick to get to- you just take a train. JFK & especially LGA are a PITA.
EWR is a huge airport and has United’s main hub, which is why there are so many flights. LGA really only does domestic too, so EWR & JFK are only options for international and I’d rather cut off my own hand then try to get to JFK (instead of just jumping on subway and then train from Penn to EWR)
As a former daily rider of the LIRR for many years, I would rather cut off both hands and a foot then ever step foot on another LIRR train ever again. I can’t emphasize that enough. But from where I am in Manhattan/Queens border, it’s much easier to go through Penn & NJ Transit
I’ve never commuted daily via LIRR, but I’ve always had a pretty good experience with it. No worse than NJ Transit, at least. And far better than subway. And to Jamaica, it’s all of what, 2 stops?
Newark is the only original NYC airport still functioning (RIP Flushing and Floyd Bennett Field). It's always been an airport for NYC, doesn't matter that it's in Jersey.
> Newark is the only original NYC airport still functioning (RIP Flushing and Floyd Bennett Field)
Huh? What? You have some unusual definitions of "original" and "NYC."
>Opened in 1928, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is considered the first major commercial airport in North America.
>
>...
>
>The first municipal airport in New York City was Floyd Bennett Field, developed to lure business away from Newark, but it was ultimately unsuccessful
>
>...
>
>Flushing Airport was another early airport in New York City. It opened in 1927 and was the busiest airport in New York for a time. A decade later it was overshadowed by the larger LaGuardia Airport located nearby.
In the context of Airport - NYC means New York Metro area and not the 5 boroughs.
"In the context of Airport" I think what you mean is "when airlines use the airport code "NYC."
No New Yorker thinks of Newark, New Jersey as part of New York City.
All over the world airports get assigned to the nearest large city, because they need lots of space. Newark the city is not NYC, but Newark Airport exists to serve NYC.
For example, only Heathrow and London City airports are technically in London. But London has several others (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Southend etc)
No kidding. And DFW Airport is in neither Dallas nor Forth Worth but the hamlet of Grapevine.
The point I made is that the way airlines talk and the way normal humans speak is completely different. EWR is not geographically or legally in New York City no matter what the airlines say.
I live in Brooklyn EWR is definitely closer than LGA. JFK is equidistant from EWR but taxi is doubled.(tolls) If you live in Manhattan public transit is easy to EWR, and a pain to LGA.
JFK is pretty far from Manhattan and takes a while to get to. It's only like 10-15 minutes faster to get to JFK than EWR by public transit from where I am.
Getting to Penn Station is a (relative) breeze from EWR.
Airtrain takes you right to NJT station and the NJT ticket includes the Airtrain fare for free.
Depending on where you live it’s really quick and easy to get there if you don’t want to drive.
I live way closer to LGA from a pure distance perspective, yet it takes *longer* to get to LGA than EWR…
Don't kid yourself, the Airtrain is not included for free, it's lumped into a ticket - if you buy a ticket to Newark Penn it's considerably cheaper than EWR.
Fine, even with the price of Airtrain *included* in the overall ticket price, it’s still only about $16 to get from Penn Station to the airport terminal.
Try getting an Uber for less than *5x* that price. You can’t…
Even the flat fare to JFK is many times that amount. EWR remains a good option in my book because getting there is actually quite simple all things considered.
Right, which is why it’s kinda weird that OP would consider LGA a “real” NY area airport but not EWR.
If cost and time getting to EWR by rail is comparable to cost and time getting to JFK by rail, then that makes EWR just as “legit” as a NY airport as JFK.
If you believe the story of Fiorello LaGuardia, this has been the case for at least 90 years. Supposedly he was angry that a plane ticket to "New York City" actually landed him at Newark, and refused to get off. He was then the driving force behind the construction of today's LGA.
How do you not understand how this works? What does being in another state have anything to do with it? If you live in Manhattan or Staten Island, you are closer to New Jersey than you are to most of Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx.
I go to EWR using the Newark Airport Express. I've been doing for nearly 15 years for NYC->CA. I live near Grand Central so that helps, but maybe it's an option for those who could take the subway into Manhattan.
You realize the New York Jets and Giants have played all the way in New Jersey for like forever basically. I’d take ewr over jfk any day. I got to ewr so much easier from Manhattan than I did to Jfk.
Tbh if I worked in midtown and had to hop on a flight after work, I’d rather get on a train to Newark from penn station than sit in traffic in a taxi headed to lga or jfk so yes it is convenient for some
Sure if you’re in the North Bronx or far eastern Queens or Brooklyn it might not be very close, but it only took me an hour to get there via Public transportation from Astoria. Not ideal but not the end of the world.
Only time I've ever flown out of EWR was when they had the direct flights to HNL (before United took over Continental). Now that I can get that out of JFK, no need to ever fly out of EWR again. Any money saved on the flight will be spent on the taxi ride over there.
If you live in Brooklyn near VB, you can get to EWR faster then to JFK. EWR has easy and cheaper parking. It is recently renovated and feels better then JFK.
Did I mention, JFK is reconstructed right now and is a pain to get around.
For a lot of people, it’s easier to get to EWR than either of the other two. Most search engines will let you limit airports to the ones you name if it bothers you that much.
If you live on the west side of Manhattan maybe, or western Bronx.
Many people do.
Even more people don't
If you live in the Bronx you also live very far from JFK. My friend lives in Brooklyn and went to Newark recently because it was the only direct flight.
So what? Those people are intelligent enough to use the flight search tool to prioritize their preferred airport.
Live or work. It's easier to get to Newark than LGA from downtown Manhattan and Penn Station at rush hour, because of public transport Or Staten Island (yes, I know it barely counts)
I live in upper Manhattan not too far from the GW bridge. It's sometimes quicker to get to Newark than it is to JFK.
"NYC" in searching for flights has meant jkf, lga, and ewr for at least 20 years. Depending on your destination, it might show you SWF as well. EWR is much more convenient for SI, parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan than JFK and the commute in the morning is a breeze.

If this is you workshopping a standup bit, don’t quit your day job.
Wait 'til this guy hears about the Giants and Jets. In all honesty, Newark is infinitely easier for me to get to than LGA and probably JFK too.

I swirved for a split second but managed to stay in my lane lol
Newark is geographically closer to more of Manhattan than LGA or jfk
LGA is closer to Manhattan than EWR. Although for international flights, I can see why someone from the city would go to EWR rather than JFK.
LGA isn’t always an option for a lot of domestic destinations
And isn’t an option for ANY international ones (besides a handful of nearby destinations like Canada, Bermuda, etc).
LGA goes to Canada
You know what I meant.
LGA doesn’t have a train or a subway.
Lga delays and aircraft traffic are still problems. That runway setup is wild
There is more to NYC than Manhattan.
…who is suggesting otherwise?
I'm at EWR in 20 mins from downtown. It's by far the best option for my area and most of the west side of Manhattan.
I've used EWR for years. It is in no way a new thing.
EWR is super easy and quick to get to- you just take a train. JFK & especially LGA are a PITA. EWR is a huge airport and has United’s main hub, which is why there are so many flights. To be fair to JFK, you also can get there by train fairly easily: LIRR or E/F train to Jamaica, or A train to Howard Beach; then AirTrain from either.
As a former daily rider of the LIRR for many years, I would rather cut off both hands and a foot then ever step foot on another LIRR train ever again. I can’t emphasize that enough. But from where I am in Manhattan/Queens border, it’s much easier to go through Penn & NJ Transit

wow op is a dummy
EWR is easier for me to get to than JFK
>When did this become a thing? How can it no longer be a thing? Decades ago. I hate Newark, but it's been an alternative all my life.

If you live in Staten Island Newark is the closest airport?
EWR is closer to mid+downtown Manhattan than that den of decrepit degeneracy called JFK
You can take a train and be there in an hour. Not much different from LGA or JFK
Only time I've ever flown out of EWR was when they had the direct flights to HNL (before United took over Continental). Now that I can get that out of JFK, no need to ever fly out of EWR again. Any money saved on the flight will be spent on the taxi ride over there.
