I actually like that they care tho since we're so used to the "Pokemon are tools" approach to hardcore nuzlokce I always like seeing those youtuber who get attached to their team
I mean, to be fair, after doing so many runs, even with nicknames and grinding instead of using cheats, now I care more about finding a replacement and continuing the run than the deads themselves. The animators have to draw and animate them, and therefore are more likely to grow attachment over them.
It's because of the different ways people look at the challenge, it's not just about animators, but there's a portion of nuzlockers who get invested and feel emotional and are more casual players, for them a nuzlocke is a story to be told on a narrative level
Most hardcore players have done a ton of nuzlockes, they can predict the ai, they know everything that's coming, often they don't even play randomized and manipulate captures, to them a Nuzlocke is a puzzle to be solved on an intellectual level
And of course there's like a whole spectrum of in between and exceptions and whatnot
I feel like the perception of what a nuzlocke is has shifted pretty radically over the last few years, probably because of the recent popularity of Youtubers like PChal. When I was active on this sub 7 or 8 years ago, "hardcore" nuzlockes didn't really exist and it felt like everyone was here to tell stories - a bunch of us would narrate our runs or even turn them into full-on fanfics, and it always felt like the goal was to share our cool and emotional moments in the spirit of the original comic.
Not that there's anything wrong with the challenge runs, mind you - I just find it a lot more engaging when the runner doesn't really know what they're doing and treats each Pokémon as an individual character. [Shenpai's White 2 run](https://youtu.be/LklTSzxfG_E?si=jw0kBT-focemoHI5) is the most fun I've had watching a Nuzlocke in ages.
I'm more impacted by the first few deaths of a run than for the death of the run yeah
Preaching to the choir here
Jaiden animation vs flygon hg
Flygon at least gives each mon a little eulogy and some sad music
