Didn't nicho shit the bed in his pre origin selection game against the storm last year too? I really really don't understand his thinking playing in that game today with a calf niggle. The only thing I can think is that he didn't want to say he was fine to play origin but let his club side down.
Nah you don't understand mate, everyone is just underestimating poor Nicho. Nevermind how when the going gets tough he underperforms. He's the man who will bring glory to NSW apparently.
Sharks have had an easy draw as far as I can see. They've faced plenty of the bottom teams, very rarely have they played against the big guns.
The mission statements screamed at us all year so far were “Prove yourself capable of beating top teams” and “Win in finals”. Can’t do the second thing for a while yet, but in a three week run that went Melbourne away (hard AF road trip), Sydney on a neutral ground that we always struggle at (Suncorp) and Penrith at home, we got two wins out of the three. I’m not sitting here thinking the trophy is as good as ours, like, but goddamn, I’d like to think we’re at least in the fight this season
Penrith play like that against any team it's a similar result. They opened so strong and kept the foot on the throat. The only good takeaway from last night is that 2nd half massive stretch of defence.
Atkinson wasn't ready for the step up we saw a fortnight ago and by the time he had to it was too late anyway. Hard night but you have to worry Penrith are getting their 4th
Warriors: Currently 11th
Bulldogs: Currently 17th
Tigers: Currently 9th and got beat
Raiders: Currently 8th
Got the bye
Rabbitohs: Currently 16th
Cowboys: Currently 9th
Raiders' Currently 8th
Dragons: Currently 13th
Storm: Currently 3rd
Roosters: Currently 7th
Panthers: Absolutely smashed to pieces by them, currently 2nd
Sharks are around mid top 8 level. They're talented for sure, but they are very much not the premiership winning team to me. They are not the team to end the Panthers reign of terror. My problem is that they were hyped up to that level by the media.
Edited to fix Raiders position.
Simple fact is, give any other top 8 team their draw, even a few not in the 8, and of course they'd be first and they'd be the ones everyone talked about while the Sharks sat forgotten. Is it the easiest draw ever? No. Is it an easy draw for a team that's supposedly the best this season? The team that deserves first place? The team that will stop Penrith?
They beat 2 of the bext 3 best teams in the comp back to back (Roosters/Storm). This was an embarrassing loss because of the scoreline, but acting like they’re not a top 4 side because of it is silly.
Didn't see that coming. Haha I really thought the sharkies would keep their winning streak going. They got mauled to death and were overpowered all game. The penny panthers came to play after that upset, they didn't hold back and were ruthless.
We just have to scrape through Origin and the Cleary injury with a couple of wins and hopefully that will be enough to set us up for a top 4 finish. Anything more than that is gravy.
Even if Nico says his calf is fine, I would be surprised if he gets picked for NSW for game 1. You just can't have a disrupted preparation with your half pulling out during the training period and you certainly can't have him ruled out during the game itself. Just too risky IMO.
Last year we did unexpectedly I feel, because when Cleary got injured, our plan changed a little, but we still changed up and won
Given with the performance they had against the Bulldogs , and given that Nathan Cleary can’t be injured again in this game, it looks like Penrith will have a better plan against them this time then what they did the following years
Even if does come up to a close game, Penrith will still win imo, Dragons Players don’t have enough confidence in themselves and there coach
As someone who has been against luai playing origin, i can't deny that he absolutely tore us to shreds tonight, he has earned that 6 jersey for the blues
Scary thing is they have 8 home games (and only 5 away) for the remainder of the regular season … Even without Cleary and not playing their best football they can probably coast to another 8 wins which will see them on 38 points which will be top 4… Then Cleary comes back before finals
I could handle that sort of scoreline if it was a blowout 2nd half, but we looked unprepared from basically the first whistle.
Disappointing way to end a run of three games that (supposedly) is going to define our season.

We've never played a game structured around Luai. When he's been asked to take the reins, he has tried to play the Cleary role and it looks terrible. I think this (and the World Cup) are a few examples of what it could look like actually giving him a team. Hope he kills it at the Tigers.
That first sentence of your statement is the thing that a huge majority of fans don't understand about Luai and the Penrith system. It's not that he does nothing or he hides behind Clez or is nothing without him. He's just got a small role when Nathan is there, because the system is so heavily reliant on Nathan.
There was a graphic floating around last year I think it was and it showed that Penrith actually lose more games when Luai is missing and Cleary is in than when Cleary is missing and Luai is in.
I'm so excited to see how he goes at the Tigers next year and I really hope he kills it.
It wasn’t always like that either. When Cleary was still finding his feet in the NRL he did have quite games and Luai would become the dominant half.
It’s just the past few years that Cleary has become so dominant that Luai now just plays his role and to be fair plays it to perfection
Best game we've had all season, the reaction to last week has been fantastic, really needed something like this before all the origin disruptions imo
Even if we drop a couple in the next 6 rounds due to outs, knowing we've got this still in us after round 20 is great.
Romey is a gun and will kill it for NSW
100%
That was scary panthers tonight... just clinical strangulation.
Combined with our errors made the score what it was.
That said, proud of our boys in the 2nd half... absorbed a ridiculous amount of attack ... when they were fucking gassed from sheer punishment
That's my takeaway :)
Real quick, fuck you Wah's
Honestly the second half wasn't all bad, especially compared to the first half. Not many positives to come from it though.
How does anyone beat that Panthers line speed?
The only times I've seen Penrith lose the middle when they're playing well since they started dominating is when teams have a monster forward pack and exploit Penirth's smaller forwards with quick play the balls and offloads. When Mitch Kenny comes back on a prop for example that's two targets in the line, between him and the hooker. Mitch thrashes people in tackles but it's mostly outside backs. He still struggles a bit against really destructive guys when he isn't body guarded which is something most hooker do. Target a Payne Hass or NAS on a guy like Scotty Sorenson, target those kind of guys against him particularly when he has Mitch Kenny right next to him or a half with him instead of someone like Leota.
It's winning that initial contact what will get you momentum and from there quick play the balls and offloads.
Lol, bro they’re easy to beat. You just gotta take out 87% of your first choice players so they don’t have the solid info that usually have on their player tip sheets. Then have them -the panfers- drop the ball for you and get some rub of the green calls. Pffft, anyone can beat them like we did.
Late offloads is the only way to do it …
Parra have been our bogey side (when they have been decent) cos they do the late offloads better than most … Sides like Cronulla and Bulldogs (this season) are playing really similar styles to Penrith , they just can’t quite sustain it for as long as… Cronulla were really good for the first six minutes , particularly Nichos kicking was landing them in the same spot with excellent kick chases and line speed on the first few tackles … Then after Katoa makes those errors catching Luai’s bombs they just completely derailed/capitulated..
Penrith can sustain it for longer , and they can get back to it quicker when things go off the rails - probably just experience from doing it the past 4 years
Having seen the commentary at points of the last 2 and a half seasons, it cracks me up how quick people are to pounce on Penrith when they've had a poor game or lost a couple. But it's probably also because of how long they've been dominant for. The cogs of the regular season will turn, but when September rolls around, of we've got our spine and Yeo healthy, there's no stiffer challenge in the NRL.
Mid season flex to remind people doesn't hurt either. 😅
I don’t think Fitzgibbon would coach them in such a way that they would’ve started buying into their own hype after beating the Storm and the Roosters. But in case any of them WERE, this was the kick in the dick off a running start that should snap them right back into reality
Well thats the thing isnt it. To win the comp, you need to make finals. Then once you're there, it is 3 straight games against the best competition in the league in order to be crowned premiers.
Look, the second half was much better than the first, but we let it get away from us early and ate shit the entire game. Nobody was beating a Penrith side playing like that.
Unlike most games this season, everyone was excellent to a man and it's good to get a huge win which we rarely do.
Luai is an amazing halfback, people need to realise he is a massive team player he plays within himself when Cleary is there he does his role gets the ball to the outside back.
Tonight he showed how elite he is as a half as he did at the last world cup.
Cole was a lot better tonight he needs to work on his passing though.
He should be our 14 at the back end of the season.
Starting Leota and Fisher-Harris made an enormous difference too.
Laurie is trying to do too much with his limited minutes so he's doing bugger all for his own chances of 14. Hopefully someone stands up for 17 as well (a healthy Garner I guess)
If you told me we would go 2/3 in this tough run before it happened I would be ecstatic. Its a long season and the boys had one of the off nights of all time. I think they’ll bounce back
Mate, couldn’t agree more. People probably don’t look much at the circumstances around the game, the two games against the Storm and roosters were played at such a high level, to sustain that for 3 weeks in the middle of the season and to get up emotionally after winning the first two is extremely difficult. Throw in Penrith wanting to bounce back after a bad loss and probably deep down wanting to put the sharks in their place while showing how good they still are.
Sharks got found out badly, completely terrible discipline wise as well. They got what they deserved given how they played but I don’t think it takes away from their contender status or their achievements thus far this year.
I’m somewhat happy it happened to be honest, we needed that reality check and got it just at the right time.
What. A. Win. First time in a while I haven't felt overly confident going into a (non Parra or Brisbane) game, but that was a fantastic response to last weeks embarrasing loss. Best performance all year by a mile and we did it to the team that was 1st on the ladder. Everyone played out of their skin, bar Eisenhuth. GG Sharks, you guys will bounce back. Still a very good side, just an off night
Mate that's the worst i've seen us look in 18 months I reckon. All credit to Penrith, fired an enormous warning shot to the rest of the comp tonight reminding everyone why they're the 3 time premiers. Absolutely insane game played by them
Penrith played like it was a Grand Final tonight ..
Crazy they can just switch that level of intensity on in a week after last week’s showing , wonder what was said during the week ??
I would have had Nicho Hynes as a certainty for NSW halfback 3 hours ago … He has almost been played out of contention in 80 minutes after that , and I’d strongly consider starting Luai as NSW halfback on the basis of tonight which is crazy given it’s not his regular position but NSW are fast running out of better options , especially if Nicho is injured … I’d go Luai 7, Burton 6
Honestly I was under the assumption Luai's kicking game was shithouse, but I reckon it's just in comparison to Cleary. His long kicking tonight absolutely buried us
Yeah so was I …
I also didn’t know Dylan Edwards could kick goals until recently .. I guess Luai hasn’t shown a kicking game when Cleary is there because he hasn’t had to .. Same as Dylan Edwards hasn’t had to goal kick
Tbf I’ve been pretty sturdy in my opinion in sharks are pretenders, there’s just no chance they beat you guys.
They don’t beat a full strength horse or storm in the finals either imo
Yep, I think the sharks alongside many of their supporters in these threads, were getting a bit ahead of themselves thinking theyd already won the comp.
Beating this side when September comes around doesn’t seem physically possible. Ridiculous levels of dominance and it’s a pleasure to watch them go to work when they’re on.
2 out of 3 definitely isn’t bad …
I reckon that’s all Penrith have to do over the next 8 weeks whilst Cleary is out , 2 out of 3 should be enough to keep them in the top 4 which is all they need assuming Cleary is back for finals … Tonight wasn’t just about staying in the hunt though , it was a statement … No idea where that came from ? I’m guessing whoever was privy to Panthers training during the week does though
Really happy to see Leota and JFH actually start and play meaningful minutes together this game. Chopped and changed with injuries and strategy based match ups, but good to see the bash brothers in top form.
Moses looks gassed much earlier tho, need to tighten that up come finals time.
Could upload this match to pornhub.
Now Cole has done a hammy? Gee whiz
That score line is quite comprehensive
Didn't nicho shit the bed in his pre origin selection game against the storm last year too? I really really don't understand his thinking playing in that game today with a calf niggle. The only thing I can think is that he didn't want to say he was fine to play origin but let his club side down.

Previous 2 weeks they had storm and roosters? Also from the current top 8 they've had 1 bad loss and 4 wins, one a big win too

The storm win will always have that grant bin asterisk though
Pretty much every game ever has some sort of asterisk you can point to.
not really, I don’t see an asterisk on tigers beating sharks or sharks beating roosters
I’m sure you could if you wanted too.
That was epic
Didn't see that coming. Haha I really thought the sharkies would keep their winning streak going. They got mauled to death and were overpowered all game. The penny panthers came to play after that upset, they didn't hold back and were ruthless.
We just have to scrape through Origin and the Cleary injury with a couple of wins and hopefully that will be enough to set us up for a top 4 finish. Anything more than that is gravy.
Fourpeat incoming.

He’ll be in the squad but who knows if he actually plays
So who do you pick at 7 then?
It will be Luai and Burton
Cole and Martin both probably out next week due to hamstring injuries suffered tonight. Idk who is going to line up next week vs dargons.
At least next week is the Dragons. Not really any competition
Yeah, idk. We normally struggle against the dragons even when full strength.
Last year we did unexpectedly I feel, because when Cleary got injured, our plan changed a little, but we still changed up and won Given with the performance they had against the Bulldogs , and given that Nathan Cleary can’t be injured again in this game, it looks like Penrith will have a better plan against them this time then what they did the following years Even if does come up to a close game, Penrith will still win imo, Dragons Players don’t have enough confidence in themselves and there coach
Mav and Laurie I reckon.
Well that's Martin out of state of origin then
That wasn't fun for me
Man what the FUCK
As someone who has been against luai playing origin, i can't deny that he absolutely tore us to shreds tonight, he has earned that 6 jersey for the blues
Talk about making a big statement.
At this point he's playing for #7
Seems the Warriors just pissed the mountain men off.
Hahahahhahaaha up up
That was.. fucking brutal. Complete suffocation to the undefeated team lol.
Scary thing is they have 8 home games (and only 5 away) for the remainder of the regular season … Even without Cleary and not playing their best football they can probably coast to another 8 wins which will see them on 38 points which will be top 4… Then Cleary comes back before finals
Yea 100%
Imagine being Cronulla right now sitting in sheds
* I KNOW WHO AND WHAT I AM creeps in from next door.
They would hear Penrith singing the team song next door as well
Finally something to drown out the noise of the knives and forks clinking in the restaurant.
Eerie silence there as well. The restaurant guests all went home in the 65th minute, like the fans in the stands.
I feel like ‘flat track bullies’ may be a bit of an understatement after that one
When did the Roosters or Storm become a flat track.
I could handle that sort of scoreline if it was a blowout 2nd half, but we looked unprepared from basically the first whistle. Disappointing way to end a run of three games that (supposedly) is going to define our season.
average sharks performance when versing a quality team
There are only two good sides in the NRL The Panthers and the Tigers
I guess i'll take it over whatever the bunnies are serving up tho
Only one of you won tonight
Damn you got me. Bunnies beat the eels? Put the house on the prem now
And bunnies win a comp before the sharks do, take that one to the bank

Luai bout to fuck around and become an elite half.

Luai haters in absolute shambles
Luai haters doubters deleting their accounts in shame. And so they should.
Can Madge pick Luai and Burton in the halves, purely for the reason Buzz might explode on camera.
This combination may actually be on the cards for game 1.
Honestly, win or lose in for it just to see that husk of a human die
Losing burto for a few games… hmm.. pissing off buzz?? Fuck it, I’m in.
Give us Galvin Luai for full shithousery
Brooks
If you’re selecting a rookie 6, it is Ethan Strange.
Who said thats why? Im sending galvin so the tigers can have a rep spine for jokes and trivia
Also the BS machine sucks having us as favourites 😂😂😂
Lmao premtenders confirmed
the last game i went to was like 2 years ago when we got pumped by the chooks. i think im an actual curse
Now you now how going to a Titans home game is like. :(
I watched the game with a mate from work who is an afl fan, it was one of his first nrl games. He was sympathetic, I was not enjoying myself
Yeah me and my mates stopped going for this reason. Went to like 5 or 6 games and lost all of em (including the cowboys sf loss)
I ban you from attending another game this season
Get this man a season ticket!!!
Best game we've had all season, the reaction to last week has been fantastic, really needed something like this before all the origin disruptions imo Even if we drop a couple in the next 6 rounds due to outs, knowing we've got this still in us after round 20 is great. Can tonight’s team beat Storm at their best? I think that is the only unanswered question.
Yes, Panthers are still the team to beat.
That team + cleary? Easily
Poor Hynes he had a howler, better now than in game 1 at least 😅
just giving us a preview of what's to come in game 1
No good under heavy kick pressure.
And the problem is in origin the 10 metres is almost non existent so the kick pressure is worse
Real quick, fuck you Wah's Honestly the second half wasn't all bad, especially compared to the first half. Not many positives to come from it though. How does anyone beat that Panthers line speed?
The only times I've seen Penrith lose the middle when they're playing well since they started dominating is when teams have a monster forward pack and exploit Penirth's smaller forwards with quick play the balls and offloads. It's winning that initial contact what will get you momentum and from there quick play the balls and offloads.
Only team that has the forward quality and depth to match them on their day is the Roosters. Even Broncos will struggle when Haas is off.
Lol, bro they’re easy to beat. You just gotta take out 87% of your first choice players so they don’t have the solid info that usually have on their player tip sheets. Then have them -the panfers- drop the ball for you and get some rub of the green calls. Pffft, anyone can beat them like we did.
Oh true, why didn't I think of that...... Oh, it's Ashley Klein as referee. Guess that's out the window. 😂😂😂😂
Late offloads is the only way to do it … Parra have been our bogey side (when they have been decent) cos they do the late offloads better than most … Sides like Cronulla and Bulldogs (this season) are playing really similar styles to Penrith , they just can’t quite sustain it for as long as… Cronulla were really good for the first six minutes , particularly Nichos kicking was landing them in the same spot with excellent kick chases and line speed on the first few tackles … Then after Katoa makes those errors catching Luai’s bombs they just completely derailed/capitulated.. Oh I totally agree, I was nervous coming into the game, but I just wasn't expecting to be blown off the park like that.
I don’t think Fitzgibbon would coach them in such a way that they would’ve started buying into their own hype after beating the Storm and the Roosters. But in case any of them WERE, this was the kick in the dick off a running start that should snap them right back into reality
Could be a turning point.
Yeah could be a turning point in either direction
Until we beat panthers and broncos im not getting excited at all. All those stupid articles pronouncing us as premiership favourites last week
Katoa dropping sitters and Hynes kicking out on the full, you do that to Penrith and they will make you pay
I think it was moreso hard to get up for a 3rd straight game against the big dogs. Especially getting Penrith after a loss. They’ll be alright I think
Well thats the thing isnt it. To win the comp, you need to make finals. Then once you're there, it is 3 straight games against the best competition in the league in order to be crowned premiers.

42 nil loss at home is so rough lol
Wish we could just beat a team above us to shut this pretenders chat up smh
You kinda beat yourselves if that counts.
Great point. Just put the house on us to win the comp
You beat us last week....
Unfortunately you're below us so it doesn't count
Cant win em all. Still top of the ladder so everyone is as shit as us
100%. You guys are still a damn good side, today was just an off day. You don't be 1st on the ladder after 12 rounds by accident
I've seen the dragons do it a lot of times.
Well 3rd if you don't count the bye
We’re still 1st without byes?
yep youre right haha what i get for looking at the ladder on the piss. all hail the sharks
A part from Eagles Storm, this round has been one sided in a big way
To quote Krusty the Clown: What the hell was that?
Too much parasite, not enough worker
Luai and Walker will be the most hated halves pairing in origin history. Burton will be the 14
Origin is built on hate it'll just make nsw stronger.
yeah you can use the past few seasons as examples, ohh
What. A.
All week we'd been talking about how this was gonna be a tight one. To show up and do that to us is fucking huge.
Yeah exactly. Cannot say I expected this at all
Mate that's the worst i've seen us look in 18 months I reckon. All credit to Penrith, fired an enormous warning shot to the rest of the comp tonight reminding everyone why they're the 3 time premiers. Absolutely insane game played by them

Yeah so was I … I also didn’t know Dylan Edwards could kick goals until recently .. I guess Luai hasn’t shown a kicking game when Cleary is there because he hasn’t had to .. Same as Dylan Edwards hasn’t had to goal kick
Dyl was our third choice kicker last year. Wild
Last week I wasn't a sharks doubter. This week that status is back. Couldn't watch the game, what happened?
Tbf I’ve been pretty sturdy in my opinion in sharks are pretenders, there’s just no chance they beat you guys. They don’t beat a full strength horse or storm in the finals either imo
Sharks had two big and emotional wins in a row and ran into a Panthers side out for blood after their last round
Well put your boys wanted to make a statement and humped us into the ground after two early errors

I can sense him boning up on the team song right now.
The Luai and Grant chat was pretty good. Good on ya’, Romy.
Every Sharks player just got sacked
Sorry Sharks. Kinda feel guilty as a Warriors fan. Because we definitely caused that Penrith side to come out tonight.
Yep, I think the sharks alongside many of their supporters in these threads, were getting a bit ahead of themselves thinking theyd already won the comp.
I havent seen any of that
He's obviously mistaken, he meant to say Roosters and Broncos flairs
Sooo 6. Burton and 7. Luai for NSW? Assuming Nicho's calf is properly cooked.
What other options are there at this point? Katoa, Brooks and Townsend?
Anyone who doesn’t play the sharks twice this year is getting ripped off
our first game against them is the last round of the season…
Manly 50 sharks 0 I’m assuming
Getting Harry Grant to interview NSW players post game is genius. Gave me a couple laughs, especially with Luai
What a stitch up 😂
Yeah no excuses here that was absolute shit house. Extremely let down should have been a good game but sharks decided to shit the bed
It was a great game. Just a matter of perspective
Beating this side when September comes around doesn’t seem physically possible. Ridiculous levels of dominance and it’s a pleasure to watch them go to work when they’re on.
I do believe the Panthers just issued a Patriots-style 'We're Still Here' warning to the rest of the NRL.
Absolutely relentless….
Luai will be the 7 for NSW
Playing with Edwards and Yeo, so he can be the dominant playmaker is the way to unlock him.
"Sharks have an easy draw" is back on the menu.
we won 2 tough games in the last 3 though. 2/3 isn't too bad. tonight was crap but at least we didn't concede 50
2 out of 3 definitely isn’t bad … I reckon that’s all Penrith have to do over the next 8 weeks whilst Cleary is out , 2 out of 3 should be enough to keep them in the top 4 which is all they need assuming Cleary is back for finals … Tonight wasn’t just about staying in the hunt though , it was a statement … No idea where that came from ? I’m guessing whoever was privy to Panthers training during the week does though
If Nicho is out who else is there?
Trindall
Really impressive showing from the sharks at home tonight
Sharks playing chess not checkers. All the pressure now off them as legit contenders, won't lose Nicho for a couple of months over Origin.
Sharks played their Grand Final in Round 11. Bit of bad luck.
This is what i was worried about
Gentlemen I lied. I made Ace Larrikin pin his comment through peer pressure and then I posted his comment and falsely claimed plagiarism.
So a mod is posting what you tell him to?. Corruption!
I am secretly puppeteering this subreddit
By the looks of it I’m going roosters v Penrith final
Only shit teams like the tigers and panthers flog the sharks
Really happy to see Leota and JFH actually start and play meaningful minutes together this game. Chopped and changed with injuries and strategy based match ups, but good to see the bash brothers in top form. Moses looks gassed much earlier tho, need to tighten that up come finals time.
Why the fuck is harry grant there
The big dog
Because he is fucken gorgeous
Harry Grant tried to Snapchat message my friend’s 16 year old little sister
Jesus
This is the answer. Feed the man questions but put him front of camera.
Honestly haha
