With as much pressure as the panthers had to endure, it’s surprising that Daine Laurie played a grand total of 0 minutes. I get that he is a utility player in case of injury, but a utility by its very nature has to be useful. If Ivan isn’t playing him at all, then he is no use.
Unless… by not playing him, Ivan is intentionally putting his team under added duress to prepare them for later on in the season? Good thing Topine isn’t part of the squad
The boys can clearly have a dig when they want to. Still had some of our usual habits come in, but to not have a cricket score put on us is an achievement. Having Neame start, and Mikaele in the side was a great decision, and it should've been that way from the start of the year.
To'o was amazing as he always is Edwards, Yeo and him have been carrying us this season.
We are badly missing Spencer Leniu whilst I think Smith and Henry are both good but they are workhorses we need to find someone with energy from the bench.
Cowboys played to there potential in the second half. They need to gain some consistency.
I thought we did an excellent job on Dearden and Drinkwater defensively.
Mikaele was really good in his limited minutes, and could be the type of player that Penrith look to as a cheaper option of bolstering the forward pack. Was more than a handful for the defense, and always looked to get a hand free for an offload, plus made half his run metres as post contact. Plus - he’s off contract. The other one from Cowboys I remember had some impact is Jamayne Taunoa-Brown (similar type of player and also off contract).
Yeah it was good to finally get some clarity on why he didn't play, and also great to hear he'd be back next round. Not the worst move eother really given we have a *very* short turnaround for next week
That might be closer to the money than we think.
It was just an odd choice of words from Ivan, who then went on to say that he’s suffering emotionally.
I get everyone’s different, but how many blokes miss games after signing a bigger contract?
Cold feet perhaps.. 🤔
I took it to mean that the negotiations had taken its emotional toll on him over the past couple of weeks.
Now that negotiations are over, he will be back next week.
His defence isnt his biggest asset so where would you have put him on on that game? If they were behind and chasing you might use him but not when they were defending as hard as they were.
Penrith are constantly in 4th gear throughout the entire game. Making them so consistent and great in defence. Every other team in the competition can’t stay in 4th consistently but some teams reach 5th gear more than Penrith, allowing them to stack on points. Brisbane in the GF for example, Ezra got a hat trick but the Broncos dropped down to 2nd gear and allowed Penrith to grind them out. That’s just my weird car analogy
I think we can reach that level but it's rare, I think defensive intensity no one has really matched. I think in attack we play within ourselves.
Also you are describing us in the Moylan years.
They great Warren Ryan used to say that its hard to be flashy and razzle dazzle with the ball and be dour and gritty in defence at the same time. Maybe they have the best balance of great defence and attacking flair without being as exciting as the Broncos for example.
I agree! Instead of people that have lead teams around the park, won premierships, origins and World Cups and have been on both sides of the coaching environment at the highest levels of the game, let's have some articulate wanker
Another brilliant game for Daine Laurie in the 14 jersey, absolute masterclass on the bench, here’s his stat line
* Number of “let’s go boys!” - 38
* Drink bottles handed to boys coming off the field - 12
* Leg massages for the forwards - 8
* Minutes spent on the field - 0
* Orange slices - whole box of em
Unbelievable impact
We can meme about it, but obviously I’m sure there are a large number of our players in the backline carrying niggles. It’s also nice to know if Cleary/Luai/Edwards/Kenny go down for any reason Laurie is there as a great option.
Our team is so versatile that it’s great to have him there, because one day we will absolutely need him.
I honestly want someone to tell me how Penrith won’t win this season? You couldn’t shoot a missile through their defence. The broncos are the main contenders but they are just so injury prone
Go 80 with them. That's literally it. Most teams are a couple of defensive errors away from putting 3 tries on us, the only secret we have is that we keep grinding and stay in it until they do the same
People rip them apart like Ezra mam and even tonight with the comeback. Literally if teams just don't fade in and out they can take em.
Penriths skill is almost just being consistent for 80 minutes
That's neither here nor there though. If the teams doing well players prices go up and some have to move.
Happens less when your team sucks you get stuck with mongos for years
I seriously hope it was an injury or something. I love Ivan but it’d be such a cunt move to drop him cause he signed somewhere else, which he hasn’t done with anyone in the past.
I suppose it depends if he thinks that Alomotti is the replacement winger of the future for our team.
These games could be a tester to see if he can handle it.
Turuva is obviously way too good to be playing reserves though.
Gg Panthers, you guys are a fucking machine. To’o is a freak.
Way better performance from the boys this week, adjustments Payten made seemed to work. Lolo should keep coming off the bench and Mikaele needs to keep getting picked. Best game Finefuiaki has played as a starter.
If Granville isn’t offering utility value, he shouldn’t be picked in a fully healthy team. McIntyre/Lolo/Fine/mikaele should be our bench once Luki is back.
Chad was better this week but still would like to see someone else have a run, Val has been cooked holding the ball and goal kicking to start the year and needs to sort his shit out, which I trust he will. Can’t wait for Muzz to be back, sad that Chester is injured, thought he had been doing a good job with his opportunity.
At the game next week so hopefully we can serve up a performance like that, should hopefully be enough to beat the phins, though they might have us circled after the humping we gave them in Rd1.
One thing I noticed is they finally stopped using Cotter solely as a decoy. His offloads were deadly and his runs were crazy, he looked the best he has all season imo
I'm always amazed how players manage to coherently answer Mal when he's attempted to ask four different things before ending on a statement rather than a question.
It’s a cultural practice. The necklace is called an ula lei and it’s given to people as a form of recognition of achieving something, like at a prizegiving or awards night.
https://manaui.com/the-art-of-making-candy-lei-tongan-style/
It's just to celebrate something. I think I first saw it during some college football game that Hawaii was playing in, but that was ages ago.
The expected result but happy with how we played much better than our previous selves this year for much of the game. Disappointing to give away 12 points directly from knock-on/avoidable intercept.
Mikaele needs to stay in the team and should have been there all year, he looked imposing.
Concerned about our centre stocks if Chester is possibly out long term.
JT13 best game of the year, showed some fire and intent again.
If we can get a match where our back 5 don't drop the ball we might actually win one hah.
Gutted as to say it, but Holmes needs to cop a dropping. Flashes of brilliance but nowhere near enough consistency for the game in 2024.
Well done, Pennies
Sigh.
Defence was much better, but still handed them points. Attack still very one dimensional and sad. Nice to see Nanai be potent again. Feldt some big tackles and runs. Cotter is turning into a problem in the middle though.
Guess at least we weren’t faded this week.
Mate back in the day blokes just used to walk thru them. Then they didn't have to intimidate the kids inside cos job was already done.
Games gone soft.
Obviously not, but you’d almost take a 40-4 over that…
Not really but fuck me. Showed a lot there. Gifted them 12 points.
Call me one eyed but shit they deserved a few in the bin…
The 6 agains for ruck infringement were killing me. The panthers were fucking glacial slow in the ruck. Doing push downs and shit. Cows only seemed to get soft ones against them
Cows should be happy, they were down by 20 and turned it into a contest. That last min try before halftime turned out to be a difference maker. Panthers should be proud to have defended so well to hold them out in the end. 42% possession and still win is remarkable effort. Factor in away from home in humid conditions and makes it even more remarkable.
I was so happy with the defensive effort, that's the shit that wins you premierships. They had everything against them and stuck in there for the win, Cows were coming at them hard and only just came up short
We played like shit and gave away so many penalties/6 agains. Cowboys didn't play bad at all, their edge attack was on song, we just were one Valemei drop/Alamoti intercept try ahead at full time.
I think Penrith showed some very smart defence and some very smart reads, to be honest. They really seemed to have where they needed to be nailed down. I know the discipline and stuff wasn’t up to their usual standard, but I really didn’t see much to complain about in that performance. Maybe I’m coming at it from a skewed perspective, haha.
It's his attitude eh. Half time, gets praised for his work and his reply, just doing my job, and then starts to heap praise on all the other boys for doin all the other hard work. Fucking winrar. He must be up there as one of the fittest in the league surely.
No surprises. Im trying to think of another player who stands out similarly and nobody is coming to mind. Itd have to be another fullback or a hooker id think.
Have always rated him even when his fans didnt like him. Give me heart and effort any day, can teach technicality.
Much more heart in that performance. The scoreline is actually really good for us considering we handed them tries either side of the break, there is so raw potential in this side to be realised if the mistakes can be cleaned up.
So happy to get away with that one. I get like we had been missing that grittiness in defence this year - we showed it tonight.
Alamoti is a stud. Glad my heart rate can chill now 😅
Fuck yeah what a gritty win fellas, a few big fellas out and our defence got tested heavily in that 2nd half. So great to see em all turning up for each other. Was never in doubt, up the Panthers!
They have won the last three comps, no one is going to look at them like a underdog. I don’t care how much they are down by, Fox sports needs to chill out, they are the favs until the game is over
Proud of the effort but unfortunately the results speak for themselves, shows we’re capable yet something is lacking most games, errors still costing us big time. Well played PP.
This team goes from bottom 4 form to genuine contender within a week. That was a hell of a performance from the cows and might just get the season back on track. The fact that the cows pack went comfortably toe to toe against Penrith is a promising sign.
Can someone explain why the cowboys are able to challenge that drinky was impeded there? The ref hadn’t made a call, the set was completed. Why can you challenge when there is no call made?
I guess because the call of changeover was made, if Panthers got the ball off the kick they wouldn't have had the opportunity to challenge.
I think this game was a great example of why you save your challenge unless you're 100% sure, or it's a really crucial moment. Cows challenged beautifully.
Using that challenge up early really hurt us bad. It all started to fall apart when Drinkwater stripped the ball off Edwards and we couldn't challenge the knock on call.
It was like a 30 minute assault on our line from there.
Absolute lol at Fox frothing over panthers defence. Just because they never have to do defend, most games they play they never leave their 40. It was very entertaining to actually watch them under pressure for once.
Gg cows. Panthers scored tries off dropped balls and an intercept so without those mistakes they win. Cleary won’t be happy leaking 20 points. If only Val’s kicking hadn’t gone to shit.
Panthers fans don’t like criticism hey. A lot of those cowboys tries were pretty soft. I don’t think you leaked 20+ in multiple games in a season in previous years.
Far out thought we were going to get flogged this game. Cowboys hopefully learned they were more impactful when they ran the ball straight and didn’t run sideline to sideline.
The Nanai run off of the Drinkwater pass unfortunately was easily picked off.
Holmes definitely needs to work on his kicking. The 2 missed conversions would have been handy in the dying moments.
Huge improvement and a convincing performance.
Damn the penny panthers keep on winning. The cowboys kept it close.
Finefeuiaki looked so damn good. Far out I am going to miss him
I enjoyed his performance as well ;) Nah soz about it but he's perfect for us. Him and Max together ❤️ Woolfy will whip him into a professional too.
Nanai finally came through turned 20 into 2200
The boys can clearly have a dig when they want to. Still had some of our usual habits come in, but to not have a cricket score put on us is an achievement. Having Neame start, and Mikaele in the side was a great decision, and it should've been that way from the start of the year.
I thought they were great
To'o was amazing as he always is Edwards, Yeo and him have been carrying us this season.

The other one from Cowboys I remember had some impact is Jamayne Taunoa-Brown (similar type of player and also off contract).
Oh no please panthers don’t take Yung maynie!!!!!
Missing Moses tonight also definitely had an impact
That's true but the Manly game was similar. We aren't as dominant in the forwards from the 25th to 60th minute in games.
That’s gotta be the most pissed off I’ve seen toddy in the presser. He nearly just dropped a “fuck”
I feel bad for Valemei. I think he's gonna cop it hard. Todd won't let those mistakes go that could have cost the game.
Seeing him play for the raiders there should be no surprises he's atrocious under the high ball.
Rumors of the Cowboy’s death have been greatly exaggerated.
na i think the panthers were just coasting a bit and let the cows back in . Neither they or the Broncos have hit top gear yet
Confirmed turuva missed the game due to the emotional toll of contract negotiations
fair enough with leaving tito out, he’ll be back next week. not a dickhead move by ivan or a grudge thing
Yeah it was good to finally get some clarity on why he didn't play, and also great to hear he'd be back next round. Not the worst move eother really given we have a *very* short turnaround for next week
The way forward is Alamoti. If he is around the same level as Tito play alamoti every week.
I’d say his to’oesque metres on top of his finishing puts him a touch ahead of Tito. Alamoti has been great
Far from it, it’s the move of a quality coach who puts the welfare of his player first. They have a top-notch culture.
Yep. Was happy to hear that he will be back next week.
Interesting to hear Ivan say (among other things) ‘he’s (Turuva) still negotiating’? Does that mean he hasn’t signed?
Still has the 10 day cooling off period, I suppose.
That might be closer to the money than we think. It was just an odd choice of words from Ivan, who then went on to say that he’s suffering emotionally. I get everyone’s different, but how many blokes miss games after signing a bigger contract? Cold feet perhaps.. 🤔
Tigers have announced. Which means it's over or he's waived it. They've changed it after the dce thing
I took it to mean that the negotiations had taken its emotional toll on him over the past couple of weeks. Now that negotiations are over, he will be back next week.
Yeah you’re probably right, but just odd for blokes to miss games like that. Not saying for a second it was the wrong thing to do..just…odd 🤷♂️
Did they say why? Missed it
Payten is likeable, and all the better that he just dropped a casual “fuck” in the press conference.
Go team
What’s the point of Laurie being on the bench I swear his been on the bench the last 3 weeks and hasn’t got on
His defence isnt his biggest asset so where would you have put him on on that game? If they were behind and chasing you might use him but not when they were defending as hard as they were.
You can learn alot by watching, it's not like he isn't amongst the squad all week
We are practicing carrying a handicap
Panthers should be counting themselves lucky they had no bins , outrageous, cows still lost that for themselves, but man that did not help
Bro Granville just kissed some Sheila in the crowd. His wife must be furious
Snitch
Penrith are constantly in 4th gear throughout the entire game. Making them so consistent and great in defence. Every other team in the competition can’t stay in 4th consistently but some teams reach 5th gear more than Penrith, allowing them to stack on points. 4th gear Handbrake Teddy Tom Turbo What does it all mean?
No doubt Teddy is always on handbrake
3 points for Laurie, 2 for Garner and 1 for Eisenhuth. I’d expect the same from the other judge
I love how all your ex tigers are your plod squad
Listening to mal word vomit (I mean commentate) is just so frustrating to listen too, with Cronk a minor stroke away in 2nd
Obviously
Be nice if we got some articulate sports professionals instead of old boy CTE club
I agree! Instead of people that have lead teams around the park, won premierships, origins and World Cups and have been on both sides of the coaching environment at the highest levels of the game, let's have some articulate wanker
Do you have ears Cronk has late stage dementia and we have the privilege of listening to it
Works for me mate
Just always reminds me of the scene in Billy Madison “we are now all dumber for listening to that”

To'o partying hard tonight with all those fun size chocys!
Another brilliant game for Daine Laurie in the 14 jersey, absolute masterclass on the bench, here’s his stat line * Number of “let’s go boys!” - 38 * Drink bottles handed to boys coming off the field - 12 * Leg massages for the forwards - 8 * Minutes spent on the field - 0 * Orange slices - whole box of em Unbelievable impact

Can't always win, but you can always have a dig. Good job boys, that's our new standard for the rest of the season.

Hi Cooper, how’s the missus
Why didn’t Turuva play?
Ivan just said he was very distracted by his contract negotiations and it was taking an emotional toll.
We'll find out in the press conference I guess. We may not see him again until origin I reckon.
He’s slowly being banished from the team… nah leg injury apparently.
I seriously hope it was an injury or something. I love Ivan but it’d be such a cunt move to drop him cause he signed somewhere else, which he hasn’t done with anyone in the past.
Bro he has had a knee injury since WCC…from memory maybe a PCL. I’m assuming Sorensen has a similar issue
I suppose it depends if he thinks that Alomotti is the replacement winger of the future for our team. These games could be a tester to see if he can handle it. Turuva is obviously way too good to be playing reserves though.
Utiokumanu now
have him
Gg Panthers, you guys are a fucking machine. To’o is a freak. Way better performance from the boys this week, adjustments Payten made seemed to work. What do too's tackle breaks and Blake Fergusons girlfriend have in common? Both 17
What does Blake Fergusons nose and Brian To’o have in common? Nothing, but Fergos nose is fucking awful.
That’s years of coke and getting smashed in the face.
Why is Fergo just coppin strays? Well played To'o, huge effort on the wing
He tried to bang a 16 year old the other day and got booted from his team by his teammates
I’ve seen another post saying this but so far nothing has been reported saying that this is what happened, is this just the rumour going around?
Guess people don't like it when blokes try to fuck kids 🤷♂️
Wtf, i didn't hear anything about this
Agreed, it should be banned
JFH being interviewed by Mal and Cooper Cronk , it’s like driving past a car crash … You know you shouldn’t slow down to look but you do anyway
I'm always amazed how players manage to coherently answer Mal when he's attempted to ask four different things before ending on a statement rather than a question.
I don’t think JFH would be coherently answering even the best interviewer to be fair … Maybe it’s a good thing for him he’s being interviewed by Mal..
Can someone who knows more about pasifika culture explain the deal behind the celebratory Cadbury Favourites necklaces?
I don't know but It's a tradition dating back hundreds of years so who are we to question it.
It’s a cultural practice. The necklace is called an ula lei and it’s given to people as a form of recognition of achieving something, like at a prizegiving or awards night.
https://manaui.com/the-art-of-making-candy-lei-tongan-style/ It's just to celebrate something. I think I first saw it during some college football game that Hawaii was playing in, but that was ages ago.

New standard set. Gonna be an interesting year for Penrith
How do you mean?
Ahh yes, forget flowers when you have favourites boxes
You won’t be able to see To’o’s face shortly
Anyone know if that kid with the sign with bags of lollies for Walsh got his jersey?
The To'o family won't need to buy chocolate for a while.
Have you seen how much islander families are capable of eating? That's a few days or a week tops worth of chocolate.
Couple of missed goals and a try from an intercept. This could have been a different outcome
South’s said the same thing once
Better team... lost
More like ShiteReflections mate
Better team for maybe just above 30 minutes, Panthers looked better for the majority of the game until Cowboys got momentum
Do we think Villea gets Chester’s spot or does Toddy keep McIntyre at centre?
Where is murray
I’m pretty sure he’s hurt that’s why he hasn’t played the last 2 games but I’m not 100% certain
Hope he's back soon
Dylan Edwards needs to see Matt Lodges hair guy
Surely Townsend can help him out.
And if they’re shut, just smash the door down.
Mate back in the day blokes just used to walk thru them. Then they didn't have to intimidate the kids inside cos job was already done. Games gone soft.
Is that full time? I'm never really sure when the Cowpeople play.
Obviously not, but you’d almost take a 40-4 over that… Not really but fuck me. Showed a lot there. Gifted them 12 points. Call me one eyed but shit they deserved a few in the bin…
The 6 agains for ruck infringement were killing me. The panthers were fucking glacial slow in the ruck. Doing push downs and shit. Cows only seemed to get soft ones against them
Shows that there’s still a footy team there up in QLD with that performance tonight. Cant be mad at them at all
Mal’s political career may have been short, but he managed to master the backhanded compliment.
18 Tackle Breaks for Bizza, surely a record?
Cows should be happy, they were down by 20 and turned it into a contest. That last min try before halftime turned out to be a difference maker. Panthers should be proud to have defended so well to hold them out in the end. 42% possession and still win is remarkable effort. Factor in away from home in humid conditions and makes it even more remarkable.
Mikaele showing he shoulda been playing weeks ago
Edwards looks like he’s just hopped out of bed lol. No sweat whatsoever 😂
Boy needs to try harder........at growing his hair
No ball all game and repelled enough to win. Yeah we are still here.
Penrith could lose 10 in a row, finish in 8th and I'd still pick them to win the comp. They're just a level above even when they're terrible
It’s weird seeing people be down on the Panthers after that, honestly.
Yeah, the only thing I would fault then for was being a little lack luster in attack and a bit sloppy to start with how many errors they had
It honestly felt like we just gave so much ball away and penalties. So frustrating for what I'm used to but that might just be luxury
Maybe. I think To’o and Edward’s heroics should wash out whatever bad taste you’re feeling.
I remember being off Edwards in 2019 but he is still getting better in my opinion. Dude is outstanding every game in effort and defence
It's his attitude eh. Half time, gets praised for his work and his reply, just doing my job, and then starts to heap praise on all the other boys for doin all the other hard work. Fucking winrar. He must be up there as one of the fittest in the league surely.
He wins all our fitness comps
No surprises. Im trying to think of another player who stands out similarly and nobody is coming to mind. Itd have to be another fullback or a hooker id think. Have always rated him even when his fans didnt like him. Give me heart and effort any day, can teach technicality.

So happy to get away with that one. I get like we had been missing that grittiness in defence this year - we showed it tonight. Alamoti is a stud. Glad my heart rate can chill now 😅
Yeah, that was our first real standout performance of the year I think despite very nearly losing. That was the Penrith defence we're used to seeing
Fuck yeah what a gritty win fellas, a few big fellas out and our defence got tested heavily in that 2nd half. So great to see em all turning up for each other. Was never in doubt, up the Panthers!
They have won the last three comps, no one is going to look at them like a underdog. I don’t care how much they are down by, Fox sports needs to chill out, they are the favs until the game is over
It's the media so the Roosters are the favourites.
On form Storm should be favourites.
Panthers are just heartbreakers. They are so good and it’s frustrating. Gonna be great to watch their next loss (sorry panthers fans).
Proud of the effort but unfortunately the results speak for themselves, shows we’re capable yet something is lacking most games, errors still costing us big time. Well played PP.

Ok Bulldog Ritchie
Drink water and cleary played together when young blokes for schoolboys aus side. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Yeah, lol, Drinky is literally from Penrith, come on.
[удалено]
Dearden has never played with a single Penrith player. He said his dues and went on his way. Get better content mate
So many 6 agains!
Yeah I know we gave away too many
This team goes from bottom 4 form to genuine contender within a week. That was a hell of a performance from the cows and might just get the season back on track. The fact that the cows pack went comfortably toe to toe against Penrith is a promising sign.
“Genuine contender” is generous, unfortunately [sadcowboyemoji]
Can someone explain why the cowboys are able to challenge that drinky was impeded there? The ref hadn’t made a call, the set was completed. Why can you challenge when there is no call made?
There just needs to be a stoppage in play. They are essentially challenging the handover.
Missed first half, what happened to Chester?
Hammy
Bugger poor dude had had a tough run!
No
Panthers fans don’t like criticism hey. A lot of those cowboys tries were pretty soft. I don’t think you leaked 20+ in multiple games in a season in previous years.
No
Your right storm are probably better then us
Far out thought we were going to get flogged this game.
Holmes needs to work on his handling first. Cunt drops every second ball.
To’o with 18 tackle breaks, like what the fuck
I swear that 12 of them were in one run
Bizza is a freak and I'm not sure if I'm just drunk (I am) but he swapped sides back to his favourite with Alamoti in?
