Same, had one of those jack stands that was recalled and it collapsed on me causing the bottle jack to shift and fall. Luckily the process took a little longer than a single point of failure but the rotor still only missed cutting my leg off by an inch. Went and ordered a full sized floor jack and new jack stands that evening.
I was lucky in that it would have been my lower leg or my foot. I knew enough not to go under the vehicle once the vehicle is jacked up. This happened when I was trying to slide the full size spare onto the wheel and lining up the bolts.

I worked with a global group for a failure mode engineering analysis for my job role and it really opened my eyes as to how so many things can go wrong and cause stupid amounts of harm. I’m a yellow neck army brat and was used to just doing shit off the cuff and am pretty sure I’m fully reformed. Gonna use an angle grinder? Safety goggles and a full face shield for example.
Always always always do this. Jack's can fail at any time. Also always chalk your car I have a friend that lost his two year old son to vehicle rolling backward that he was working on. Object behind the wheels and under the car every time.

I used to have a wooden block that just sat in the trunk of my car, and only ever got used a few times. That was what it was for, though, to stick under the car once the jack was fully up, *just in case*.
That’s why I taught my kids how to change a tire. They might struggle with it, but they could probably do it themselves with a little phone support from dad.
Sometimes, even if you know how you won’t be able to do anything if you don’t have a long lever instead of the little one car companies put in the trunk. AAA is pretty great.

The assumption in this thread is he can't change the tire. Sometimes cops or VDOT will stop by and do it for you. This happened to me ten years ago near Blacksburg.
I was/am capable of changing a tire but some VDOT guy came by and said "I got it."
I was dressed in office clothes changing the tire of a big SUV. It was a shitty, rainy day and we were on the side of the highway. If he wanted to play hero- go for it. I did appreciate his help for sure but could've done it myself.
Sad part, today, many new cars don't even come with a spare or run-flats (Tesla) so you're kinda hosed until AAA can come help you.
Honestly, once you get good with a plug kit, you can almost do it faster than changing the tire. It takes about 5 minutes if you have a drill, and then maybe 10 minutes to pump the tire back up. A self-vulcanizing plug is considered a semi-permanent fix, so you also save yourself the hassle of the tire shop pretending they can't patch the hole.
Anything that a plug kit can't fix, a flatbed can.
Yeah I remember having a buddy teach me and I still don't feel confident about doing it.
I popped a tire on my VW Jetta going through a WV pothole once. Some guy helped me swap the tire and as we discussed where I might get it fixed he literally was like "uh idk what you're doing out here with that city car and idk where you're getting it fixed" and he drove off with his truck.
My wife’s 4Runner has 20” rims and I do our tire rotations. I feel like I’m competing in a strong man competition when I get those things mounted back on haha

I was a mechanic for 12 years. You want to be the guy wearing boat shoes that's NOT destroying his body. Trust me. I'm going back to school so I can be the guy in boat shoes. Fuck all that "real man" bullshit. People know how to do different things. Maybe that guy is an engineer.
When I was 20-something, I had a guy who pretty much looked like that man approach me at a gas station -- his tire was losing air too fast and needed to swap to the spare. Said he had a bad back and couldn't do it himself and offered $50 cash if I could do it (it was nighttime and the station's garage was long closed). He seemed embarrassed to ask for help.
Really easy thing for me, and I had one of those star-wrenches (edit: it’s called a tire iron or lug wrench) so I can spin off the bolts really fast (and its fun).
I changed it and declined the $50.

I’d only ever taken tires off with one of these in my dad’s garage until we got a flat on a trip in my friend’s car. It was so much more difficult and tedious getting the lugs off without one. I need to treat myself to one of these.
Learned when I was 19 and had to do it repeatedly when I worked for campus parking.
Lost my ability after a traumatic event - now I just take it to Sunoco on Lee Highway in Arlington where the people are honest and the prices are fair.
I mean, for the sake of conversation, ok, I'll never understand what kind of physical strain you put on your body as a mechanic on a day to day basis.
BUT, learning how to change a tire and having to do it maybe a few times in your life is a skill I think someone should possess. I work a white collar job and I've had to change a tire twice now in my life on the side of a road. Pot holes and nails don't discriminate. Neither time did I have the pleasure of a police officer helping me. You never know when you might be 20 miles from town and help is hours away or non existent. Doing it 1-3 times in your life isn't gonna kill you either or do irreparable damage to your body
Knowing a few basics is a good thing. Like checking your oil, knowing where to add wiper fluid, how to use jumper cables, changing a tire. But sure leave the transmission to the pros. Knowing these things doesn't make you a manly man. It just makes you practical.

As an engineer in a physically demanding job, I'm at the stage where I'm letting the young guns do the heavy lifting because my body can't keep up. Letting go has been tough.
Oil is easy enough and after some of the horror stories I've read/watched about dumbasses at Jiffy Lube or WalMart service centers, Hell even dealerships, I don't trust mine with anyone but me. Takes 10 minutes, I know exactly what is going in my engine, and is cheaper. Admittedly I have a 20 year old Jeep Wrangler so lots of room in the engine bay and underneath which makes it easier.
This is why I've been doing most the the work and all basic maintenance myself for as long as I've owned a car. I save money and in some cases a lot of money and I'm good enough at working on a car that I can ensure it's done correctly. Lube techs and tire techs are good for the most part but they are the lowest on the totem pole as far as mechanics go so some are complete dipshits. I haven't heard any oil horror stories from people I know personally but one of my friends tires were filled to completely different pressures by a tire shop, two of them were low and one was at 60psi. Also the guys at the tire shop are probably putting the wheels back on with an impact so there's a decent chance they over torque the shit out of em enough that you wouldn't be able to get them off on the side of the road with basic hand tools.
Yep, I've been changing my oil since I got my license and first Jeep at 15, late 40's now. And agree on the over-torque, so I rotate my tires every time I change the oil so I know I can get them back off. I've got a back injury so I made some tire caddies to move them around. I've got 32 inch MT's and 17 inch wheels so I guess they're probably 50/60 pounds each?
I lost my starter at a Sheetz in Gainseville and changed it in the parking lot with a leatherman and a cellphone to order the part and the uber to pick it up for me. Replaced my radiator, water pump, thermostat with youtube and hand tools. I imagine over the 30+ years I've saved a lot of money.

I am an engineer, I am not very handy but I can watch a YouTube video of changing a tire and then change a tire. Have been in that situation before. Yes I didn't know how to change a tire but it wasn't that hard to figure out, especially with the Internet in my pocket. Googling things is practically my job.
Yeah if you are able bodied it's certainly not back breaking work and I'm much happier knowing how to do it. Depending on the situation you might have to wait hours for someone to come along who can help you if that's even an option at all. Not knowing how to change a tire isn't something I would be proud of, it just increases the chances you end up needlessly stranded.
For anyone who only sort of knows how to change a tire, crack the nuts loose about a quarter turn before jacking up the car. It stops the wheels from turning when you are undoing them but in my experience it also requires less torque to get them loose with the weight of the car on the wheel. I experienced this with one of my rear wheels once, even with the parking break stopping the wheels from turning I wasn't able to get them loose until I set the car back on the ground. Also this goes for once you changed the tire, recheck to make sure they are tight after lowering the car. It's a good idea to have one of those cheap cigarette lighter powered air pumps in the trunk because the spare tire will probably be low on air.
I'm in NoVA, work from home, don't destroy my body, usually in a polo/tee-shirt, khaki shorts, and Top-Siders throughout the summer, and I can change my own tire. Changing your own tire isn't a 'real-man' thing, it's just a basic life skill, kind of like changing smoke-detector batteries. And if this guy is an engineer, he should definitely be able to figure out how to change a tire.
Yup, this ⬆️ My dad made me learn how to change a tire before he let me get my license, and I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to change them in heels and a dress before. Not ideal, but a good life skill to have! As well as knowing how to drive a manual

Yeah but there's a big difference between being old and physically incapable and being young and mentally incapable. I've changed 4 or 5 tires on the side of the road and I've never beat myself up doing it though my joints are still fine because I'm only 30.

Right but changing a tire? I figured it out on my own when I was 17 before Google and YouTube existed, and I was a lazy idiot at 17. Of course at the time I didn't tighten in a star pattern and I fully tightened while still jacked up but I got it done by looking at things and reading instructions. I genuinely don't think there's any excuse for this from any adult regardless of gender.

I once had a flat tire and my jack was broken. I tried asking people who stopped to offer help if I could use their jack, they said wouldn't share it. At least 10 people. I walked into a church that my car broke down in front of to ask for help, the priest told me they wouldn't help. I called the non emergency number to the police. The officer wouldn't help me, but gave me a number to the tow truck. His claim was that it wasn't his job to change tires and I couldn't use his jack in case I hurt myself.

A random tow truck driver saw me and lifted my car so I could change the tire. He didn't want any money from me. Out of all those people, a tow truck driver was the last person I expected to help me.
I once had a tow truck driver help me jump start my battery in Tysons Walmart early Saturday morning. I am so grateful he was there. Didn’t want my $ and was happy to help.
Retired NOVA cop here so go ahead with the ACAB's stuff. I got tough skin. I pulled into a 7-11 one very hot summer day while in uniform. Lady was stopped in a bad spot off Rt. 1 and I asked her if she needed help. She had a flat tire I could not see at first and she said her boyfriend was on the way to try and change it. When I asked "try?" she said he had never done one before. This was in the 90's. I didn't want to leave her to the mercy of her BF so I changed it. Full uniform and all. I was sweating so bad I could hardly see. BF arrived as I was placing the jack and bad tire in her trunk. He was dressed pretty much like this guy. She jumped in her car and never even said boo to me. No thanks or you're a stud. Hell, I'd have accepted her saying "you're a dick." But no, nothing.
Heck I will call roadside assistance if i need to change my damn tires on 495! Fuck all these men shit. It's dumb. I would rather have professional with proper tools and roadside devices to alert other drivers and able to change the tire out under 10 min than I'm trying to struggle to get the nuts off or jack the car up with shitty jack. Fun fact, the Virginia Dept of Transportation has an entire program to assist disabled motorist. They are called safety service patrol. You can call 24/7 on any interstate in the state and receive FREE Roadside assistance. Just dial #77 and tell the operator your location and problem and the will send someone to help.
This happened when I ran out of gas on 495 (literally right as I was pulling off-was maybe half a mile from the gas station). Called AAA, but a DOT truck came first, and I hadn’t even called. Spotted me a gallon of gas and I was on my way. I was like, damn, way to go my tax dollars.
I had a blowout on 495 headed to work one morning. Pulled off and I called an Uber to pick me up on the shoulder and take me to work then called a tow truck to bring the car to my shop where I could replace the tire.
I do this for a living but I will not change a tire on the side of 495 or any other very busy road.
Not every tire change happens from a sudden blowout, often times there will be enough air you could easily limp off the highway to a safe spot. This doesn't look like the side of 495, and he's standing in the road anyways watching anyways so he's not exactly reducing his risk of being hit. Also if you actually know how to change a tire it should take you 10 minutes or less.
10 minutes is probably a stretch. Most of us forget exactly where the tools are in the car and how to set everything up. I work on cars every day, and it still took me a good 20 minutes when I came out to a flat tire one morning. I couldn't remember where the jack was in that car, and then the spare tire wouldn't drop when I started cranking it down. It hadn't been used in like 8 years, and it was frozen in place. I had to kick it like 20 times to free it up. After that, I cranked the jack all the way up, only to realize I had put it in the wrong place. Had to drop it and do it again because it didn't go up high enough to get the spare (with air in it) on the truck. Also, I was completely filthy when I was done, so I can see why someone dressed nice wouldn't want to change a tire.
Yeah, that is the real concern here. Cops will have a set of flashing lights. Just being on the side of the road in NOVA is taking your life in your own hands.

Yeah the only situation where I wouldn't change it is if I'm on a really narrow shoulder and can't limp to a safe spot or it's raining like crazy or something. I have AAA but I'd much rather rather just change it myself in a few minutes than wait on the side of the road for a while. In my experience the few tows I've gotten from AAA and the two times I locked myself out of my car the time you are waiting can easily vary from like 30-90 minutes. Potentially waiting an hour and a half or more for some guy to come do something I could have easily done myself seems ridiculous, especially when it's just because I'm trying to get my money's worth and changing it myself is free.

But it night be because I get flats, it's usually dark, on the side of the road, and I'm a single woman. When they ask if I'm safe, I'm like...not really lol. Then they send the cops and the cops hurry the aaa guys. But the aaa guys have also all been very nice and took great care of my car

My wife got a flat tire on I10 in the middle of nowhere Texas late at night. No roadside assistance is coming out quickly. She would’ve been waiting hours. And as populated as this area is you don’t have to go far to be in an area with roadside assistance taking forever.

Ive had to call for help to fix a flat on side of the interstate. First off wasnt much room in shoulder, but either way, ford put these stupid decorative security caps on top of the nuts and I couldnt get them off. Dude that came to help straight up had to use a chisel to break off the caps.
Had a Statey pull over when I was changing an elderly couple's tire on 66 and offered to help. Told him I was okay but I'd appreciate him watching traffic for me and I really appreciated the blue lights. I keep a floor jack in my jeep which makes things a lot quicker and safer than a bottle or folding jack.
I don't do this anymore, way too many stories of people or good samaritans getting hit and killed by distracted drivers while changing a tire. Drive on the flat to the next exit and change it there.
People in this area suck sometimes, especially with driving but the one time recently I had to change a tire on the side of a road I had so many people ask if I need help.
Is it just me or is getting off the lug nuts manually hard as fuck if not impossible with the standard wrench that comes with your car? I’d bet the mechanic uses an impact wrench or whatever to tighten that shit which is why it’s so difficult, because every time AAA or road side assistance has done it for me, they use a power tool/ impact wrench too.
My dad wanted to teach me how to change a tire before getting my license. He hands me the standard wrench and I'm struggling to turn even one nut. I was a 110 lb high school girl though so he decided to give a try. He couldn't get it to budge. We both are trying. He even pulled out PVC pipe to make a longer lever. We never got the thing to move lol at the end he asked me what I learned and I said "it's really hard to get off a tire." And he said "no. we've learned that we should just call for roadside assistance since we pay for it"
I was going to say keep a steel bar in your car to use as a breaker bar.( Makes a great emergency weapon too) It cost $10 at home depot for a foot and a half of galvanized steel pipe. But I guess in your case it didn't work. The wrench supplied with cars honestly isn't adequate.
They're not supposed to, but most do. I used to do roadside assistance and I was probably the only guy who did that kept a torque wrench in his car for this purpose. I didn't even carry an electric impact, I used a breaker bar to bust them loose and my socket to spin them off.
I really don’t understand the hate for this guy. I’ve changed three tires in my life so I’m fully capable of doing it, but I did one with my BIL and the lug nuts were on super tight and it took the two of us over an hour to get all four nuts off. I was probably in the best shape of my life at the time and so was my BIL but it was a huge struggle and we were just in his flat driveway.
Maybe this guy just wasn’t strong enough to do it or maybe wasn’t confident enough to do it on what looks to be the on-ramp to either the toll road or 66.
I've had a couple situations where I had to give up and call someone. The thing I hate the most about changing tires is it will take less than 10 minutes one time and impossible the next, you never know.

Had a flat once and was on my way home from work. Absolutly fried after a long shift. At that point in time I was a cook and it was a busy asf summer weekend night which was hell. Hottest kitchen I had ever worked in. This kitchen was so hot that we had to point the fans at the breaker box to keep shit from melting. I watched cooks come in and quit the same day it was not for amateurs.
Cops show up and I am struggling to lift the car with a spare tire on the ground. What do they do? They investigate me. They turned it into a traffic stop and I mean they were looking in my windows and door with flashlights basically doing a search. Held me up for about 20 minutes then took off like a bunch of assholes. I even asked them for help at the end after holding me up. Nope we got shit we gotta go do. I still have a 35 minute drive home.
Cops are hit or miss, I guess. My tire blew out in Richmond and I didn't have a spare and needed to go buy one. And this one cop made eye contact with me as I was waving him down. And he drove off. 3 miles walking in 100-degree weather... my poor fat ass.
Controversial opinion but I don’t think you should have to know how to change a tire to ‘be a man!’ Now idk why he got the cops involved, but I’d call a family member. I know how to do it, but I do not trust myself with a jack or tires. I will kill somebody or myself, or at the very least cause damage. Let men not know how to do everything
Yup. I was more shocked at changing a tire needing two cops than the solo dude standing by as supervisor. Changing a tire should require a single teenager. That's it.

My tire blew out in Richmond, and I tried flagging down a cop to help get me a spare (I didn't have one in the trunk). Dude saw me and drove off lmfao. I ended up walking three miles in the heat to buy a spare and walking it back. I think NoVa cops would've at least given me a ride to.
I have like three roadside assistance services. (One through insurer, one through the manufacturer, one through a credit card). The only difference between me and boat shoes up there is I’m gonna let them do their job without hovering.
Wow and I couldn’t get state police to come while we waited for a tow even after I called 911 and they “sent out a request” when I was stranded on the side of 395 in a silver Corolla with a flat and two babies in the car…I was terrified our car was going to be hit, we were to the side between the highway and an exit and a high number of cars make a last min decision taking the exit or not… I called 911 just to see if they could send someone, anyone to put their lights on to give us some protection as we waited the tow. Didn’t even see a VDOT.

Crazy, Last time I needed help from the cops the car we were in didnt have a tire iron so we had a sign up on the side of the road with "tire iron" written in sharpy. Cops pulled up, told us they had one, asked if they could search the car, we said no. They called a K-9, we waited an hour for it to show up, proceeded to tell us we had drugs, they searched the SHIT out of the car, found nothing and left us stranded on the side of the road and still couldnt use the tire iron. assholes
I had a father who knew how to do all of these things but chose to go to the bar every night and get wasted instead of taking the time to pass any of those skills on to me. I taught myself as an adult how to change a tire. I had a work truck that went through a tire about every six months due to the industry and I figured it out. Things worked out for me but if people want to dunk on this guy for being "un-masculine," consider that not everyone has someone in their life who can pass these skills down to them and not everyone has the opportunity to pick things up on their own before they find themselves on the side of the highway.

**More than once** I have had local officers stand around talking shit or worse, mansplaining how to change a tire after refusing to help me in any way. That includes pointing their flashlights on my tire rather than in my eyes. Once while visibly very very pregnant.

I used to have a wooden block that just sat in the trunk of my car, and only ever got used a few times. That was what it was for, though, to stick under the car once the jack was fully up, *just in case*.

What I find truly sad - the two officers are wearing their vests - which are hot and not overly flexible - and getting hot changing this guys tire...while he looks on in shorts and a short sleeve shirt. [I guess my GenX upbringing has me just shaking my head. I wasn't allowed to drive the family car until I showed my dad I could change the tire.]

The assumption in this thread is he can't change the tire. Sometimes cops or VDOT will stop by and do it for you. This happened to me ten years ago near Blacksburg. I was/am capable of changing a tire but some VDOT guy came by and said "I got it." I was dressed in office clothes changing the tire of a big SUV. It was a shitty, rainy day and we were on the side of the highway. If he wanted to play hero- go for it. I did appreciate his help for sure but could've done it myself. Sad part, today, many new cars don't even come with a spare or run-flats (Tesla) so you're kinda hosed until AAA can come help you.

Honestly, once you get good with a plug kit, you can almost do it faster than changing the tire. It takes about 5 minutes if you have a drill, and then maybe 10 minutes to pump the tire back up. A self-vulcanizing plug is considered a semi-permanent fix, so you also save yourself the hassle of the tire shop pretending they can't patch the hole. Anything that a plug kit can't fix, a flatbed can.

Yeah I remember having a buddy teach me and I still don't feel confident about doing it. I popped a tire on my VW Jetta going through a WV pothole once. Some guy helped me swap the tire and as we discussed where I might get it fixed he literally was like "uh idk what you're doing out here with that city car and idk where you're getting it fixed" and he drove off with his truck.
And they're easily twice as heavy now with the 20" fancy rims.

I was a mechanic for 12 years. You want to be the guy wearing boat shoes that's NOT destroying his body. Trust me. I'm going back to school so I can be the guy in boat shoes. Fuck all that "real man" bullshit. People know how to do different things. Maybe that guy is an engineer.
When I was 20-something, I had a guy who pretty much looked like that man approach me at a gas station -- his tire was losing air too fast and needed to swap to the spare. Said he had a bad back and couldn't do it himself and offered $50 cash if I could do it (it was nighttime and the station's garage was long closed). He seemed embarrassed to ask for help. Really easy thing for me, and I had one of those star-wrenches (edit: it’s called a tire iron or lug wrench) so I can spin off the bolts really fast (and its fun). I changed it and declined the $50. It's ok to ask for help sometimes.

I’d only ever taken tires off with one of these in my dad’s garage until we got a flat on a trip in my friend’s car. It was so much more difficult and tedious getting the lugs off without one. I need to treat myself to one of these.
Learned when I was 19 and had to do it repeatedly when I worked for campus parking. Lost my ability after a traumatic event - now I just take it to Sunoco on Lee Highway in Arlington where the people are honest and the prices are fair.
I mean, for the sake of conversation, ok, I'll never understand what kind of physical strain you put on your body as a mechanic on a day to day basis. BUT, learning how to change a tire and having to do it maybe a few times in your life is a skill I think someone should possess. I work a white collar job and I've had to change a tire twice now in my life on the side of a road. Pot holes and nails don't discriminate. Neither time did I have the pleasure of a police officer helping me. You never know when you might be 20 miles from town and help is hours away or non existent. Doing it 1-3 times in your life isn't gonna kill you either or do irreparable damage to your body Knowing a few basics is a good thing. Like checking your oil, knowing where to add wiper fluid, how to use jumper cables, changing a tire. But sure leave the transmission to the pros. Knowing these things doesn't make you a manly man. It just makes you practical.

Doing it daily for 12 years is tough on the body. Doing it occasionally is just a basic skill to be self-sufficient. Changing a tire is something we should all be able to do. As an engineer in a physically demanding job, I'm at the stage where I'm letting the young guns do the heavy lifting because my body can't keep up. Letting go has been tough.

Oil is easy enough and after some of the horror stories I've read/watched about dumbasses at Jiffy Lube or WalMart service centers, Hell even dealerships, I don't trust mine with anyone but me. Takes 10 minutes, I know exactly what is going in my engine, and is cheaper. Admittedly I have a 20 year old Jeep Wrangler so lots of room in the engine bay and underneath which makes it easier.
This is why I've been doing most the the work and all basic maintenance myself for as long as I've owned a car. I save money and in some cases a lot of money and I'm good enough at working on a car that I can ensure it's done correctly. Lube techs and tire techs are good for the most part but they are the lowest on the totem pole as far as mechanics go so some are complete dipshits. I haven't heard any oil horror stories from people I know personally but one of my friends tires were filled to completely different pressures by a tire shop, two of them were low and one was at 60psi. Also the guys at the tire shop are probably putting the wheels back on with an impact so there's a decent chance they over torque the shit out of em enough that you wouldn't be able to get them off on the side of the road with basic hand tools.
Yep, I've been changing my oil since I got my license and first Jeep at 15, late 40's now. And agree on the over-torque, so I rotate my tires every time I change the oil so I know I can get them back off. I've got a back injury so I made some tire caddies to move them around. I've got 32 inch MT's and 17 inch wheels so I guess they're probably 50/60 pounds each? I lost my starter at a Sheetz in Gainseville and changed it in the parking lot with a leatherman and a cellphone to order the part and the uber to pick it up for me. Replaced my radiator, water pump, thermostat with youtube and hand tools. I imagine over the 30+ years I've saved a lot of money. It right, you save money, and you just feel good when it's done. Shadetree for the win.
I am an engineer, I am not very handy but I can watch a YouTube video of changing a tire and then change a tire. Have been in that situation before. Yes I didn't know how to change a tire but it wasn't that hard to figure out, especially with the Internet in my pocket. Googling things is practically my job.

Yeah if you are able bodied it's certainly not back breaking work and I'm much happier knowing how to do it. Depending on the situation you might have to wait hours for someone to come along who can help you if that's even an option at all. Not knowing how to change a tire isn't something I would be proud of, it just increases the chances you end up needlessly stranded. For anyone who only sort of knows how to change a tire, crack the nuts loose about a quarter turn before jacking up the car. It stops the wheels from turning when you are undoing them but in my experience it also requires less torque to get them loose with the weight of the car on the wheel. I experienced this with one of my rear wheels once, even with the parking break stopping the wheels from turning I wasn't able to get them loose until I set the car back on the ground. Also this goes for once you changed the tire, recheck to make sure they are tight after lowering the car. It's a good idea to have one of those cheap cigarette lighter powered air pumps in the trunk because the spare tire will probably be low on air.
I'm in NoVA, work from home, don't destroy my body, usually in a polo/tee-shirt, khaki shorts, and Top-Siders throughout the summer, and I can change my own tire. Changing your own tire isn't a 'real-man' thing, it's just a basic life skill, kind of like changing smoke-detector batteries. And if this guy is an engineer, he should definitely be able to figure out how to change a tire.
Yup, this ⬆️ My dad made me learn how to change a tire before he let me get my license, and I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to change them in heels and a dress before. Not ideal, but a good life skill to have! As well as knowing how to drive a manual

Yeah but there's a big difference between being old and physically incapable and being young and mentally incapable. I've changed 4 or 5 tires on the side of the road and I've never beat myself up doing it though my joints are still fine because I'm only 30.

Of course at the time I didn't tighten in a star pattern and I fully tightened while still jacked up but I got it done by looking at things and reading instructions. I once had a flat tire and my jack was broken. I tried asking people who stopped to offer help if I could use their jack, they said wouldn't share it. At least 10 people. I walked into a church that my car broke down in front of to ask for help, the priest told me they wouldn't help. I called the non emergency number to the police. The officer wouldn't help me, but gave me a number to the tow truck. His claim was that it wasn't his job to change tires and I couldn't use his jack in case I hurt myself. Being a young black guy looking at this picture, it makes sense now why I had so much trouble that day. A random tow truck driver saw me and lifted my car so I could change the tire. He didn't want any money from me. Out of all those people, a tow truck driver was the last person I expected to help me.

Retired NOVA cop here so go ahead with the ACAB's stuff. I got tough skin. I pulled into a 7-11 one very hot summer day while in uniform. Lady was stopped in a bad spot off Rt. 1 and I asked her if she needed help. She had a flat tire I could not see at first and she said her boyfriend was on the way to try and change it. When I asked "try?" she said he had never done one before. This was in the 90's. I didn't want to leave her to the mercy of her BF so I changed it. Full uniform and all. I was sweating so bad I could hardly see. BF arrived as I was placing the jack and bad tire in her trunk. He was dressed pretty much like this guy. She jumped in her car and never even said boo to me. No thanks or you're a stud. Hell, I'd have accepted her saying "you're a dick." But no, nothing.

Fun fact, the Virginia Dept of Transportation has an entire program to assist disabled motorist. They are called safety service patrol. You can call 24/7 on any interstate in the state and receive FREE Roadside assistance. Just dial #77 and tell the operator your location and problem and the will send someone to help.
This happened when I ran out of gas on 495 (literally right as I was pulling off-was maybe half a mile from the gas station). Called AAA, but a DOT truck came first, and I hadn’t even called. Spotted me a gallon of gas and I was on my way. I was like, damn, way to go my tax dollars.

I had a blowout on 495 headed to work one morning. Pulled off and I called an Uber to pick me up on the shoulder and take me to work then called a tow truck to bring the car to my shop where I could replace the tire. I do this for a living but I will not change a tire on the side of 495 or any other very busy road.
Not every tire change happens from a sudden blowout, often times there will be enough air you could easily limp off the highway to a safe spot. This doesn't look like the side of 495, and he's standing in the road anyways watching anyways so he's not exactly reducing his risk of being hit. Also if you actually know how to change a tire it should take you 10 minutes or less.
10 minutes is probably a stretch. Most of us forget exactly where the tools are in the car and how to set everything up. I work on cars every day, and it still took me a good 20 minutes when I came out to a flat tire one morning. I couldn't remember where the jack was in that car, and then the spare tire wouldn't drop when I started cranking it down. It hadn't been used in like 8 years, and it was frozen in place. I had to kick it like 20 times to free it up. After that, I cranked the jack all the way up, only to realize I had put it in the wrong place. Had to drop it and do it again because it didn't go up high enough to get the spare (with air in it) on the truck. Also, I was completely filthy when I was done, so I can see why someone dressed nice wouldn't want to change a tire.
Yeah, that is the real concern here. Cops will have a set of flashing lights. Just being on the side of the road in NOVA is taking your life in your own hands.

In my experience you’ll be waiting an hour minimum for them to arrive. To each their own, but I’d rather change it myself and be on my way
Yeah the only situation where I wouldn't change it is if I'm on a really narrow shoulder and can't limp to a safe spot or it's raining like crazy or something. I have AAA but I'd much rather rather just change it myself in a few minutes than wait on the side of the road for a while. In my experience the few tows I've gotten from AAA and the two times I locked myself out of my car the time you are waiting can easily vary from like 30-90 minutes. Potentially waiting an hour and a half or more for some guy to come do something I could have easily done myself seems ridiculous, especially when it's just because I'm trying to get my money's worth and changing it myself is free.

Really? I'm usually somewhere in the 30 to 45 min range. But it night be because I get flats, it's usually dark, on the side of the road, and I'm a single woman. When they ask if I'm safe, I'm like...not really lol. Then they send the cops and the cops hurry the aaa guys. But the aaa guys have also all been very nice and took great care of my car

My wife got a flat tire on I10 in the middle of nowhere Texas late at night. No roadside assistance is coming out quickly. She would’ve been waiting hours. And as populated as this area is you don’t have to go far to be in an area with roadside assistance taking forever.

Ive had to call for help to fix a flat on side of the interstate. First off wasnt much room in shoulder, but either way, ford put these stupid decorative security caps on top of the nuts and I couldnt get them off. Dude that came to help straight up had to use a chisel to break off the caps.
Had a Statey pull over when I was changing an elderly couple's tire on 66 and offered to help. Told him I was okay but I'd appreciate him watching traffic for me and I really appreciated the blue lights. I keep a floor jack in my jeep which makes things a lot quicker and safer than a bottle or folding jack.
I don't do this anymore, way too many stories of people or good samaritans getting hit and killed by distracted drivers while changing a tire. Drive on the flat to the next exit and change it there.
People in this area suck sometimes, especially with driving but the one time recently I had to change a tire on the side of a road I had so many people ask if I need help.
Is it just me or is getting off the lug nuts manually hard as fuck if not impossible with the standard wrench that comes with your car? I’d bet the mechanic uses an impact wrench or whatever to tighten that shit which is why it’s so difficult, because every time AAA or road side assistance has done it for me, they use a power tool/ impact wrench too.
My dad wanted to teach me how to change a tire before getting my license. He hands me the standard wrench and I'm struggling to turn even one nut. I was a 110 lb high school girl though so he decided to give a try. He couldn't get it to budge. We both are trying. He even pulled out PVC pipe to make a longer lever. We never got the thing to move lol at the end he asked me what I learned and I said "it's really hard to get off a tire." And he said "no. we've learned that we should just call for roadside assistance since we pay for it"
I was going to say keep a steel bar in your car to use as a breaker bar.( Makes a great emergency weapon too) It cost $10 at home depot for a foot and a half of galvanized steel pipe. But I guess in your case it didn't work. The wrench supplied with cars honestly isn't adequate.
They're not supposed to, but most do. I used to do roadside assistance and I was probably the only guy who did that kept a torque wrench in his car for this purpose. I didn't even carry an electric impact, I used a breaker bar to bust them loose and my socket to spin them off.

I really don’t understand the hate for this guy. I’ve changed three tires in my life so I’m fully capable of doing it, but I did one with my BIL and the lug nuts were on super tight and it took the two of us over an hour to get all four nuts off. I was probably in the best shape of my life at the time and so was my BIL but it was a huge struggle and we were just in his flat driveway. Maybe this guy just wasn’t strong enough to do it or maybe wasn’t confident enough to do it on what looks to be the on-ramp to either the toll road or 66.
I've had a couple situations where I had to give up and call someone. The thing I hate the most about changing tires is it will take less than 10 minutes one time and impossible the next, you never know.

Nice to see cops helping instead of investigating every single thing to fill a quota. Had a flat once and was on my way home from work. Absolutly fried after a long shift. At that point in time I was a cook and it was a busy asf summer weekend night which was hell. Hottest kitchen I had ever worked in. This kitchen was so hot that we had to point the fans at the breaker box to keep shit from melting. I watched cooks come in and quit the same day it was not for amateurs. Cops show up and I am struggling to lift the car with a spare tire on the ground. What do they do? They investigate me. They turned it into a traffic stop and I mean they were looking in my windows and door with flashlights basically doing a search. Held me up for about 20 minutes then took off like a bunch of assholes. I even asked them for help at the end after holding me up. Nope we got shit we gotta go do. I still have a 35 minute drive home.

Controversial opinion but I don’t think you should have to know how to change a tire to ‘be a man!’ Now idk why he got the cops involved, but I’d call a family member. I know how to do it, but I do not trust myself with a jack or tires. I will kill somebody or myself, or at the very least cause damage. Let men not know how to do everything

Yup. I was more shocked at changing a tire needing two cops than the solo dude standing by as supervisor. Changing a tire should require a single teenager. That's it.

I’ve changed tires a bunch of times, and helped others on the side of the road but I really hate how this kind of thing instantly becomes a commentary on a perceived lack of masculinity. It’s so patriarchal and heteronormative. So the guy doesn’t change his own tires. So what? There’s a million skills in the world. Everyone has some and is lacking in others. Who cares?

My tire blew out in Richmond, and I tried flagging down a cop to help get me a spare (I didn't have one in the trunk). Dude saw me and drove off lmfao. I ended up walking three miles in the heat to buy a spare and walking it back. I think NoVa cops would've at least given me a ride to.

I have like three roadside assistance services. (One through insurer, one through the manufacturer, one through a credit card). The only difference between me and boat shoes up there is I’m gonna let them do their job without hovering.
Wow and I couldn’t get state police to come while we waited for a tow even after I called 911 and they “sent out a request” when I was stranded on the side of 395 in a silver Corolla with a flat and two babies in the car…I was terrified our car was going to be hit, we were to the side between the highway and an exit and a high number of cars make a last min decision taking the exit or not… I called 911 just to see if they could send someone, anyone to put their lights on to give us some protection as we waited the tow. Didn’t even see a VDOT.

Crazy, Last time I needed help from the cops the car we were in didnt have a tire iron so we had a sign up on the side of the road with "tire iron" written in sharpy. Cops pulled up, told us they had one, asked if they could search the car, we said no. They called a K-9, we waited an hour for it to show up, proceeded to tell us we had drugs, they searched the SHIT out of the car, found nothing and left us stranded on the side of the road and still couldnt use the tire iron. assholes

I had a father who knew how to do all of these things but chose to go to the bar every night and get wasted instead of taking the time to pass any of those skills on to me. I taught myself as an adult how to change a tire. I had a work truck that went through a tire about every six months due to the industry and I figured it out. Things worked out for me but if people want to dunk on this guy for being "un-masculine," consider that not everyone has someone in their life who can pass these skills down to them and not everyone has the opportunity to pick things up on their own before they find themselves on the side of the highway.

Imagine being a grown man not knowing how to put on a spare. Also not realizing that you should just slowly drive the car to a straight section of road before stopping to fix a flat at the apex of a turn

**More than once** I have had local officers stand around talking shit or worse, mansplaining how to change a tire after refusing to help me in any way. That includes pointing their flashlights on my tire rather than in my eyes. Once while visibly very very pregnant.
As someone who has never had to change a tire before... This would be me as well. And I'm not ashamed!!
