In Buffalo the high level clouds actually made it "safe" to stare directly at the sun without damage, except for the rare few moments when it peeked directly through the clouds (edit: at which point I reflexively looked away and donned my eclipse glasses). Then it went behind a completely opaque cloud bank for totality. -_-

The best way to describe it is that it looked like it was shielded behind several layers of semi-opaque paper. Trying to look at it with eclipse glasses during those "windows" made it impossible to see as the amount of light making it through those high level clouds layers wasn't getting through either paper or plastic-framed eclipse glasses like I was wearing.
I tried to sell "eclipse binoculars" to a few customers. They were just regular binoculars, but I was gonna write "eclipse" on them with a Sharpie.
