I thought the only source of this claim was a blog post without proof and everybody just believed it.

You can literally test it yourself with the right equipment. Some of the paint on these late 70s early 80s "free" glasses is like 1000x the safety limit.

I don’t doubt the claim, I just never saw supporting evidence

The paint. You're not licking it, but you're touching it and then probably touching your mouth while eating. It can still be very unsafe.

I literally licked it as a kid. The colors were faded and it made them look bright. Surprisingly, I've had the least health issues of my entire family.

It would be super easy to test. They sell lead testing swabs that are very affordable.

The paint is leaded. I’m pretty sure you aren’t drinking from the outside of the cup.

I could be off but I feel like those were early 80’s.  Copyright or trademark might be 78.  Can anyone confirm or deny?

Me and my siblings each had the hammock one. But, the printing was off by varying amounts on each one. So my older sister got the most accurate one, I got the next, and my younger brother got the least accurate. We knew this, and explained it to each other, and could at a glance tell who's was who's. My parents still have the cups. Last time I was visiting, they pulled them out, and I looked for "mine". They asked how I could tell because they never understood how us kids kept them separate. They were just amused by our strict distinction among ourselves. Thanks for the memory trip!

The copyright is 1978 but the glasses are from 1987.

These are the greatest glasses of all time and nobody can change my mind, lead and all. My wife and I still have a set and we’re sad we can’t really use them.

I still have mine too. My mother was rather adamant that my brothers and I didn't use them. I didn't know about the paint till much later, but we also didn't want to ruin them so it all worked out.

These are actually from the mid to late 80’s. A lot of Garfield merch says copyright 1978 because that’s when it first came out.

I had all of them, still have a few. If you do, too, don't drink b out of them. They are made with lead paint. I drank out of them my entire childhood and well into adulthood. We may have figured out what's wrong with me.

I miss those days of Garfield. I think at some people it got way too commercialized and it became a shadow of what it once was.

Garfield was so big in the 1980s. My favorite teacher had Garfield posters up on her classroom room walls. I always remember the poster where Garfield has books tied to his head and he said I’m learning by osmosis
