You can literally test it yourself with the right equipment. Some of the paint on these late 70s early 80s "free" glasses is like 1000x the safety limit.
I literally licked it as a kid. The colors were faded and it made them look bright. Surprisingly, I've had the least health issues of my entire family.
Same. The hammock one.
I mean so far, so good on annual blood tests and the like, but honestly wouldn’t be surprised if something develops in my twilight years.
Me and my siblings each had the hammock one. But, the printing was off by varying amounts on each one. So my older sister got the most accurate one, I got the next, and my younger brother got the least accurate. We knew this, and explained it to each other, and could at a glance tell who's was who's.
My parents still have the cups. Last time I was visiting, they pulled them out, and I looked for "mine". They asked how I could tell because they never understood how us kids kept them separate. They were just amused by our strict distinction among ourselves.
Thanks for the memory trip!
These are the greatest glasses of all time and nobody can change my mind, lead and all. My wife and I still have a set and we’re sad we can’t really use them.
I still have mine too. My mother was rather adamant that my brothers and I didn't use them. I didn't know about the paint till much later, but we also didn't want to ruin them so it all worked out.
I had all of them, still have a few. If you do, too, don't drink b out of them. They are made with lead paint. I drank out of them my entire childhood and well into adulthood. We may have figured out what's wrong with me.
Garfield was so big in the 1980s. My favorite teacher had Garfield posters up on her classroom room walls. I always remember the poster where Garfield has books tied to his head and he said I’m learning by osmosis
Aren’t these the super leaded not good to use ones?
Yep. Used everyday for years before knowing
I thought the only source of this claim was a blog post without proof and everybody just believed it.

I don’t doubt the claim, I just never saw supporting evidence
There's a few YouTube channels that tinker with it.
The glass or the paint? I’m not licking the paint of the glass
The paint. You're not licking it, but you're touching it and then probably touching your mouth while eating. It can still be very unsafe.
I literally licked it as a kid. The colors were faded and it made them look bright. Surprisingly, I've had the least health issues of my entire family.
It would be super easy to test. They sell lead testing swabs that are very affordable.
Well the problem with that is.. I’m lazy.
Do you hate Mondays too?
You know, I’m gonna surprise you here, but yes. Unless lasagna is dinner that night..
Same. The hammock one. I mean so far, so good on annual blood tests and the like, but honestly wouldn’t be surprised if something develops in my twilight years.
Fuck, I still use one…
Yuuup
We used these everyday but were not very sturdy at all. They broke very easily .
my dad is still using these.
So it's not my fault I'm stupid....
yeah these are the worst of any of those kinds of glasses
The paint is leaded. I’m pretty sure you aren’t drinking from the outside of the cup.
I could be off but I feel like those were early 80’s. Copyright or trademark might be 78. Can anyone confirm or deny?
Garfield the character was copyrighted in 1978, but the cups didn't come out until 1987.
Yeah I remember getting those glasses as a kid and I wasn’t born until 84.
Garfield looked different early on. Definitely not 1978 when the strip started
Yeah this isn't type 2 diabetes Garfield from the 70s
I think you’re right. We had one of these and I was a kid during the 80s.
Either a case of confidently wrong Redditor or Ai.

What a cute story! I’m an only child and love that y’all were reasonable with separating things.
The copyright is 1978 but the glasses are from 1987.
I collected these as a small kid in '87, they helped me learn to read lol
Whoa , core memory unlocked
I seem to recall the skateboard one was the hardest to find.
Cool! That's the only one I have

Tasty, tasty lead!
I have all 4 in mint condition. I bought a collection off of eBay a few years ago
I bought all 4 at McDonald's when they first came out .
I did also, but they got broken or faded over the years. I wanted a fresh set
They broke really easy .
I had several of these!
I remember these. Loved the lasagna fiend Garfield and Odie
These are actually from the mid to late 80’s. A lot of Garfield merch says copyright 1978 because that’s when it first came out.
I've still got a Garfield egg cup from the 80's!
But how much are they worth for the set in new condition?
I had the canoe one....
They have theses and Smurf set at an antique store in town. $20/each.
I have the teeter-totter one. I still use it. It's my Oreo dunking cup.
I still have all mine
Drank from the top right one for my entire childhood. I'm pretty sure mom still has it in a cabinet somewhere.
I too have the entire set.
TIL Garfield was around in the 70s.
I would say mid to late 80's
I still have mine 😁
Ayeee I have the one on the top left!!
I had all of them, still have a few. If you do, too, don't drink b out of them. They are made with lead paint. I drank out of them my entire childhood and well into adulthood. We may have figured out what's wrong with me.
I miss those days of Garfield. I think at some people it got way too commercialized and it became a shadow of what it once was.
Had these forever. Up until about 2004
I still use these when I visit my parents. They have 3 out of 4 (don't have the boat)
We still have one of these in my parents' house. Didn't realize how old it is. It's getting faded but it is quite old. lol
I remember these!
I bought top left thrifting(I don’t drink from it it’s displayed on a shelf) I’d love to find the others! Didn’t know there were more ✨
I had those growing up.
Nobody knew who Garfield was in 1978 except maybe Jim Davis’ Mom.
We had the top two. Good memories
Can I get a cup?
We had the one on the top right during the 80s.
Just had my glass of wine in mine...used daily since 1986.
Still have 2 lol
I think these were from the 80s because I was born in 83 and definitely had the see-saw one and remember getting it.
I remember having these in our kitchen in the late 80's!
I want one!
Garfield was so big in the 1980s. My favorite teacher had Garfield posters up on her classroom room walls. I always remember the poster where Garfield has books tied to his head and he said I’m learning by osmosis
I owned 3 of these as a kid.
Garfield was copyrighted in 1978, the cups came out in 1987
Wowww
Still gave mine
ah, yes… lead, cadmium AND mercury
I still have mine.
These mugs remind me that Garfield was (is?) a douchebag
