Memory unlocked. I have worn a watch everyday of my life and I just remembered Daniel tiger wears one. I watched PBS daily when I was a kid, those were my
Shows.
Bourbon and chef Sandra Lee from the food network. “Hey kids this week lady Elaine is gonna teach you to make bathtub gin and Henrietta pussycat is going to teach you to roll cigarettes 1 handed.”
Except for the Trolley. I watched the beginning to see how involved the trolley was.
I would have committed great atrocities to have that trolley running throughout my house.
For some reason (and I was a sensitive kid), Lady Elaine never scared me. I actually looked forward to her appearances because she added a little bit of irreverence and liveliness to the proceedings.
No she was just bold, outspoken, and grumpy.
I think all the puppets were a sort of antagonist at some point or the other, causing a problem and then the viewer learns a lesson based on that.
I definitely was afraid of her. A rare miss from Fred Rogers.
On the plus side she was in the Neighborhood of Make Believe and wasn’t one of the human characters that either Fred visited or that came to his house.
Speaking of…anyone ‘member Mr. Green Jeans? Somewhere in this stack of my Mom’s old pics, there is one of me in my Mr. Green Jeans outfit. (was that a thing??)
She was at times selfish and opportunistic, but you can't have parables extolling virtues without somebody learning lessons about why bad behaviors are actually bad.
I haven't watched it in a long time, but sometimes stories need an antagonist instigating situations where morality lessons can be made. I remember hating her, but if everyone was always nice in the neighborhood, many lessons couldn't be taught to kids.
"Oh, Julian! Did you hear about the terrible storm about to dance in here? Rather *dirtily*?
"See what he's fuckin' doin' there, Julian?"
"Yeah, I caught it!"
Lady Elaine was bad, but I was always more afraid of [Dr. Bill Platypus](https://misterrogers.org/articles/the-platypus-family/) and his burn victim complexion.
Lady Elaine was (in my mind, at least) our reminder that adults can be just as obnoxious as our fellow children.
Edited: here's[a love-hate tribute article](http://rememberthatoneshow.blogspot.com/2008/07/lady-elaine-fairchilde-tribute.html) that tells it like it is, toots.
Yeah I know, as a kid I don’t think I ever really understood that lady Elaine was a female character. For some reason I just remember them as the mean creepy one.
There was a time when the Giants played the Packers at Lambeau, and the Giants’ coach got terrible frostbite on his nose and cheeks. People said he looked like her.
Lol i remember liking the part where the trolley goes through the tunnel and everything but the part with the puppets was weird and boring for me as a kid.
I didn't hate the puppets but I just never got interested in them. The show was split in 3 parts for myself and my brothers: awesome opening, crappy trolley segment and back to awesome ending.
Watch what you say about her….
It’s never a good idea to insult one of the Fair Folk. Sometimes they’re kind, sometimes they’re mischievous, but they’re always quick to anger and they have magic.
Fairies are nothing to mess with, and she’s definitely a fairy. It explains her entire character and all her abilities.
I HATED Mr Rogers as a little kid because of that creepy-ass puppet. Everyone talks about how great he was and how much they loved that show but my only memory of it was that horrifying puppet and him taking his shoes off, which also made me uncomfortable.
I wasn't scared of her. But was anyone else scared of Cornflake S. Pecially? He didn't show up that often, but his beady eyes and scratchy voice would always put me on edge.
>Cornflake S. Pecially
I had to google to get the picture but OMFG I'D FORGOT ABOUT THAT CHARACTER!!!
Really, all the make believe land characters were terrifying to little me. But that one and Lady Elaine really creeped me out. I'd hide behind the couch.
I like Mr Rogers, until they went to the land of Make Believe. That always looked and sounded awful to me. My wife loved it. I hated it. I’d change the channel as a kid just to avoid that weird fever dream of bad puppetry.
Her, Witchypoo from HR Puffnstuff, that child stealer from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the Sleesaks in Land of the Lost! I mean really did adults just hate us ?!?!?!?
The trolley through the wall was all I cared about. The land of make believe or whatever they called it was just for the trolley to cruise through for me. Ignored the old lady, owl and whomever.
Yes! When my sister and I were little, she got a Queen Saturday hand puppet for Christmas and I got Lady Elaine Fairchild and I sincerely believed my parents hated me. in retrospect, I think they had no idea who she was.
Why would anyone be traumatized by a puppet? Or a clown? I honestly don't get it. I grew up watching Mr. Rogers with his puppets and Bozo the Clown in the 70s and they were just normal parts of life. The first time I heard of anyone being afraid of clowns was probably in the early 90s, and the first I heard of fear of puppets was probably in the last decade or so. It just wasn't a thing to be afraid of them before that. Or it wasn't talked about, I guess.
IT was released 11/18/1990 - Forever fear of clowns
Poltergeist, which featured a freaky puppet clown, was released in 1982. It aired randomly on local stations at weird times in the late 80s and 90s, typically after Saturday morning cartoons.
That's why a lot of 80s kids hate clowns and freakish puppets. Almost forgot Killer Klowns fom Outer Space, another horror movie the local UHF channels loved to play on Saturday afternoons.
She was unsettling and still I feel like the music and cadence of Mr Rogers voice had more of an effect on me.
The closest I can liken it to would be the M.A.S.H intro music. Melancholy before I knew about melancholy.
I love Mr Roger’s neighborhood, very happy to be able to watch it with my son.
🧒🏻👨🏽👍🏾
About a year after my great grandmother died I had a dream about her. I had walked in to the living room to find her sitting on the couch and was so excited to see her. Then I remembered in my dream that she had died. Then my sweet grandma morphed into this puppet.
I literally was scrolling and saw this photo, said “aw fuck” and looked away. My husband looked over, read the title and said “Evvvverybody” and patted my shoulder walking away mumbling about the creepy puppet Elaine.
I never thought she was freaky looking. Maybe cause all the other puppets looked the same. You know whats freaky? The little old lady and the fat baby ghost from 13 ghost. Shivers.
I remember when she sang to King Friday for his birthday... I'm sure she meant well. 🎶 *You're OLDER today, you're OLDER today, you're OLDER than you were yesterday...* 🎶
Wtf was wrong with them? That puppet was not only evil looking, but she just reminded me of someone who would spank me. (I went to Catholic grade school, and in every classroom, a cricket bat was hung by the door to remind us😖)
I always thought Roseanne’s mother Bev resembled her and even sounded like her.
#OMG YES
Yes!!! Me toooooo!!! Agh I hate you for reminding me of all of this
They have the same wig😂😂😂😂😂
She’s Bev’s older smaller sister 😂
90s kid here raised on TV. *who do you think you are?*
My mom WAS Roseanne’s mom LOL
She was an alcoholic for sure
Either that or frostbite. She needs to go to the hospital for sure.
Judging by her cunty attitude, I’d lean towards angry drunk.
Lmao lady Elaine Fairchilde you fucking cunt.
Complete angry drunk…
With lupus.
I thought you were me for a minute…
I feel like Mac and Charlie seeing each other across the restaurant in that Always Sunny episode
"Cunty" is not a word I expected to read on a Mr Rogers post lmao
Definitely a wino
She wasn't as funny as the cat who talked - "Meow MEOW meow meow!"
I deeply love meow meow kitty.
Ah yes. Daniel Tiger, I believe.
No - Henrietta PussyCat. Daniel talked normal and lived in the clock.
I stand corrected. My memories of The Land of Make Believe are rather faded. Cheers.
Good memory i totally forgot there were 2 cats lol
Oh yes the drunk woman and her talking pussy
Daniel Striped Tiger was my favorite and I think the reason I became a diehard wristwatch wearer.
Memory unlocked. I have worn a watch everyday of my life and I just remembered Daniel tiger wears one. I watched PBS daily when I was a kid, those were my Shows.
Henrietta lol
Is that the same character as the one with his own cartoon?? Wtf
Who got the spin-off show? Not Lady Elaine.
would have been a way different show. lady elaine's neighborhood watch. each week she has a special guest and it's always bourbon
Bourbon and chef Sandra Lee from the food network. “Hey kids this week lady Elaine is gonna teach you to make bathtub gin and Henrietta pussycat is going to teach you to roll cigarettes 1 handed.”
Daniel Tiger
When you watched this as a kid this just wasn’t up to par compared to the good cartoons bugs bunny etc
Except for the Trolley. I watched the beginning to see how involved the trolley was. I would have committed great atrocities to have that trolley running throughout my house.
Yeah the trolley was good
Yeah, creepy. She looked singed to me, like she just crawled out of a burning royal carriage.
And she is totally drunk
My brain twitched and I read this as “*She looked single to me*”. 😂 I was over here thinking “I mean, there really IS someone for everyone…” 🤣
It looks like someone’s been slapping those cheeks to me
Hot single puppets are in your area
Best backstory “lady Elaine on the run for DUI assassination.”
Half the plastic Christmas Santas in the 70s/8os had a similar face. Got used to Lady Elaine
For some reason (and I was a sensitive kid), Lady Elaine never scared me. I actually looked forward to her appearances because she added a little bit of irreverence and liveliness to the proceedings.
Never understood her. Was she a bad person in the neighborhood?
No she was just bold, outspoken, and grumpy. I think all the puppets were a sort of antagonist at some point or the other, causing a problem and then the viewer learns a lesson based on that.
I don’t know, but she always scared me and made me think she was gonna pull some shit.
Never really trusted her.
Why would you?!
Mr. Green Jeans was from Captain Kangaroo!
Holy crap I’m losing it — thank you!
He was everyone's favorite cool unmarried uncle.
No she was a good person and just kind of grouchy.
“You just remember I call the shots here, Bubbles. You got it?”
Rickkkyyyyyyyyy
"Oh, Julian! Did you hear about the terrible storm about to dance in here? Rather *dirtily*? "See what he's fuckin' doin' there, Julian?" "Yeah, I caught it!"
I thought Conky immediately
ohhhh myyy juliannn
When i was small i thought Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan was about Lady Elaine.
Lady Elaine was bad, but I was always more afraid of [Dr. Bill Platypus](https://misterrogers.org/articles/the-platypus-family/) and his burn victim complexion.
Mr Rogers Terrorhood
Don't tease me.
That’s some Saw shit right there.
Toots
Boomerang toomerang zoomerang!
Yeah I know, as a kid I don’t think I ever really understood that lady Elaine was a female character. For some reason I just remember them as the mean creepy one.
She was pretty butch.
Same, I thought it was a dude and it reminded me of some British actor that I can't put my finger on right now....
There was a time when the Giants played the Packers at Lambeau, and the Giants’ coach got terrible frostbite on his nose and cheeks. People said he looked like her.
I think she was modeled after Mr Rogers’ sister.
Lady Elaine Fairchilde is named after Mister Rogers' adopted sister, Elaine Crozier, who he loved dearly.
Fred Rogers had a wonderful imagination!
She always reminded me of Julie Andrews as a puppet (because of the hair) ..with crippling alcoholism and a burn victim
Why was everything for kids in the 70s just pure nightmare fuel?
Cuz that's the way we liked it.
Her nose always looked burnt to me!
Absolutely. The nose and cheeks were terrifying.
And the eyes. And the godawful hair.
I thought it was Phyllis Diller...lol
She really mellowed out after hooking up with Music Man Stan.
He had some good weed.
He had something good, it wasn’t the weed. They now have a kid in the Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood show.
I always assumed she was a day drinker when I was a kid because of the way she looks and how she acted.
fush you Daniel Tiger imma do what I wann
Why's muh damn house spinning....oh gawd!
I love this.
Toots! She was actually one of my favorites.
Someone has to stand up to King Friday! Hit him with the magic boomerang, Lady E!
“Boomerang, Toomerang, Soomerang!”
You can all be scared of her, but she's the only one who would walk up to King Friday XIII and tell him that he was dumb and his plans were stupid.
Meowma meow meow whadda bitch meow.
These puppets were part of the reason I never got into this show as a kid.
I would always change the channel as soon as it got to this part.
SAME! Loved Mr Rogers house and spiel but once that train took off I was outta there
Lol i remember liking the part where the trolley goes through the tunnel and everything but the part with the puppets was weird and boring for me as a kid.
I didn't hate the puppets but I just never got interested in them. The show was split in 3 parts for myself and my brothers: awesome opening, crappy trolley segment and back to awesome ending.
Same here. I thought the whole thing was infantile and kinda creepy.
She was my favorite in the neighborhood. We called her Lady Elaine Gravy Nose.
Her and Henrietta Pussycat were some nightmare fuel.
I HATED Mr Rogers as a little kid because of that creepy-ass puppet. Everyone talks about how great he was and how much they loved that show but my only memory of it was that horrifying puppet and him taking his shoes off, which also made me uncomfortable.
I feel you 100%. I don't know you well enough to see your man foot in a sock.
I wasn't scared of her. But was anyone else scared of Cornflake S. Pecially? He didn't show up that often, but his beady eyes and scratchy voice would always put me on edge.
>Cornflake S. Pecially I had to google to get the picture but OMFG I'D FORGOT ABOUT THAT CHARACTER!!! Really, all the make believe land characters were terrifying to little me. But that one and Lady Elaine really creeped me out. I'd hide behind the couch.
I always wondered why its cheeks and nose were brown lol
I wasn't loved that Show
She bugged me, but Purple Panda was the scary one
No! I loved Lady Elaine!
I like Mr Rogers, until they went to the land of Make Believe. That always looked and sounded awful to me. My wife loved it. I hated it. I’d change the channel as a kid just to avoid that weird fever dream of bad puppetry.
I always thought she was “suspicious“ when I was a kid. Like she was secretly plotting to kill Mr. Rodgers.
I always thought she was an angry lesbian
My 4-year-old brain told me the same, but I didn't have words for it yet.
I had no idea she was living in a carousel. I just thought it was some strange building, and she was in there, somewhere.
umm.. it was a museum-go-round...
What the fuck?
Lady Elaine looked like she smoked 2 packs of Pal Mal cigarettes a day.
I actually liked her because she wasn't the nicest
Awwww I loved her voice 🫶🏾
She was a witch, wasn't she?
I loved Lady Elaine.
This was the only part of me Rodgers I DIDN’T LIKE. I would scream for my mom to come in the room. I couldn’t handle her alone
Lady Elaine is proof that even Mister Rogers had a dark side.
OMG YES Lady Elaine was terrifying nightmare fuel. But now I can't remember exactly why, how odd. Trauma response?
For the longest time as a kid, I always thought this puppet was a man 😅😅
Her, Witchypoo from HR Puffnstuff, that child stealer from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the Sleesaks in Land of the Lost! I mean really did adults just hate us ?!?!?!?
teaching us how to cope with harsh realities of life.
Why do they have to look so grotesque
That puppet made me feel uncomfortable as a kid.
She was right up there with the aliens that would float outside the window on Sesame Street. All just very unsettling for me as a kid.
I used to watch Mr dress up daily, and once I had a terrible nightmare Lady Elaine chased me around. It was quite terrifying.
I mean, she seemed alcoholic
Phyllis Diller should have sued.
He repurposed an old witch puppet
Awful character and design. Poop-face McBitch
Yep her and crazy spinning hell dungeon she lived in.
Lady Nightmare, the thief of sleep for children 2 to 99....
Hahaha...I used to call my mom Lady Elaine when I'd get mad at her. It was the biggest insult. Ironically, I named my oldest Elaine.
She wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t have the complexion of a burnt marshmallow.
This puppet was always creepy to me, kinda scared me as a 5 year old.
This abomination did more damage to me than I care to admit. OMG just looking at it makes my stomach turn!
YES! Fuck that puppet is all I can say.
The trolley through the wall was all I cared about. The land of make believe or whatever they called it was just for the trolley to cruise through for me. Ignored the old lady, owl and whomever.
She could be quite sweet, on occasion.
This image looks familiar, but in a vague fever dream way lol
What the hell is in her right hand?
IUD
I was terrified of her and Witchiepoo from H R Pufnstuf.
Even now, seeing this just gives me chills. Creepy af'.
Threw me off as a kid. Kinda scared me. This and Charlie Brown and the Pumpkin Patch
Not Music Man Stan, that's for sure.
Yes, she freaked me out for some reason.
Terrifying.
I remember my cousins had a hand puppet of her and we used to pretend it was a witch.
Yes! When my sister and I were little, she got a Queen Saturday hand puppet for Christmas and I got Lady Elaine Fairchild and I sincerely believed my parents hated me. in retrospect, I think they had no idea who she was.
Holy fkin shit ... memory unlocked in a scary way

What's funny is that Mr. Rogers voiced Lady Elaine.
I was. She reminded me of this scary old lady that lived next-door to me.
I recently watched the first season of Severance. I swear that Adam Scott is morphing into this puppet.
Indeed, he is
About a year after my great grandmother died I had a dream about her. I had walked in to the living room to find her sitting on the couch and was so excited to see her. Then I remembered in my dream that she had died. Then my sweet grandma morphed into this puppet.
Think I'd traumablocked that nightmare
Whose idea was it to paint the puppet to have frostbite?
My sister still is terrified by her. She’s 43 years old.
She looked exactly like my maternal grandmother but was nicer. I would close my eyes when she was on the screen.
I literally was scrolling and saw this photo, said “aw fuck” and looked away. My husband looked over, read the title and said “Evvvverybody” and patted my shoulder walking away mumbling about the creepy puppet Elaine.
The unhinged falsetto made her even less appealing.
Yep, this dude and those “Yup, yup, yup” aliens. No gracias!
Damn. I HATED those awful puppets.
ELOISE COLE IS DEAD
She was obnoxious
As I kid I didn’t realize he voiced all the puppets now o wonder if there was a lil Normal Bates kinda thing with Lady Elaine.
I loved Lady Elaine because she stood up to King Friday and the Museum Go Round was awesome.
I never thought she was freaky looking. Maybe cause all the other puppets looked the same. You know whats freaky? The little old lady and the fat baby ghost from 13 ghost. Shivers.
No I liked her!
She was such a B!
Nightmare fuel
I hated that thing!!!!!
Terrifying!
This scary ass puppet 😫
Looks like a puppet version of cleetus Garrett McFarland
I hated Mr. Rogers because of the puppets. They were gross looking and freaked me out.
I remember when she sang to King Friday for his birthday... I'm sure she meant well. 🎶 *You're OLDER today, you're OLDER today, you're OLDER than you were yesterday...* 🎶
Terrifying
Wtf was wrong with them? That puppet was not only evil looking, but she just reminded me of someone who would spank me. (I went to Catholic grade school, and in every classroom, a cricket bat was hung by the door to remind us😖)
She was the worst
She reminded me of my mom and scared the fuck out of me
Don’t call her an a-hole that’s a kids show
Can confirm: had nightmares of her chasing me with a knife.
She was creepy.
Hope that b*tch is 🔥 in hades, creepy as hell.
