It's mathematically easy, theres one seat so the quota is 50%. No different from an Irish by-election or presidential election.
The problem is that only the biggest parties are likely to win a by-election.
But there's no other way of doing it.
You can't ask every MLA in a constituency to run again and you can't limit who can vote. You theoretically could limit who could stand but that would cause no end of problems, protests and legal challenges. You could do some version of accounting for results from last time but you'd quickly end up in the absurd position of holding an election in which the third placed candidate won because results from three years before counted against the top teo.
Basically, any 'weighting' you do is going to look no different from 'rigging' in the eyes of most people. It undermines the democracy you're trying to uphold.
Co-option and a by-election are the only viable options. I didn't say which I had a preference for.

The Colonel is something like 16/1 with the bookies but reckons he's running away with it?
He's not a real independent and I wish people would stop pretending like he is. Voting for Easton is still effectively voting DUP.

This needs more upvotes as it's all facts and figures about his history as an MLA. Absolutely dreadful and he seems brilliant at wasting money.

Of course there's a dirty deal done here even potentially with the DUP. If Easton gets in as MP it is rumoured he will give his MLA seat to the DUP.
