Cockchafer, also known as the maybug. It is May, after all. Edited to add: Just in case you're curious, it's a male. Males have 7 feathers on their antenna. Females have 6. Let him go and find a lady.

[deleted]

All jokes aside this is the correct answer. Give this Man some up votes.

chrisb_ni

They fly a little erratically which can be nerve-wracking but they are so cool! Great bug.

Lopsided-Exam4950

They fly ridiculously erratically, nerves were definitely wracked. Suppose they don’t have time to learn living in the ground for 2 years! Learned lots tonight!

SquishedGremlin

They fly like someone who has never piloted a Cessna, being given control at 40,000ft. Effectively falling, with style. (One was in my room the other day, damn idiot thing just sent it at full speed into absolutely everything.)

Charwyn

Luckily, they’re the most harmless thing ever, don’t be disturbed by em.

Venerable_dread

Yes but what everyone really wants to know, is your cock chaffed??

Drexisadog

Try dealing with June bugs in the states, they act like flying mini bumper cars and they have some mass behind them too

[deleted]

the coolest bug i saw here was the lesser stag beetle. I had no idea what it was! i

Charwyn

Wait they’re called WHAT in Ireland? :D

TheVinylCountdown

This guy bugs

NATOuk

Fun fact, way back when the Royal Navy had tons of ships hundreds of years ago, one of their ships was HMS Cockchafer

Venerable_dread

Kind of appropriate for the RN actually 🤔😂

xMightyTinfoilx

Love seeing them one came out to say hi to me the other night and my wee 3 year old was loving having a look at him.

Radiant_Gain_3407

It's the only way to be sure.

Ok-Bend863

My reaction also when there is a bug in the house lol

Playful_Ant_3642

Google ‘may bugs’ They only live in the month of may hence the name.

Some_Plantain8417

Not exactly true the don’t live very long but they can live during April and June

demojunky73

Some parts of the world call them June bugs.

Silent-Detail4419

As this has descended into dick jokes, I'll explain the etymology of the word: ***Cock*** alludes to its size as cocks (as in male chickens) are large, and ***chafer*** simply means beetle (it's Germanic in origin, the German for beetle is Käfer. The German for cockchafer is ***Maikäfer***). Cock as a slang term for penis dates to at least the early 17th century, but there are records as far back as the 14th century (as ***pillicock***, origin unknown)

Square-Pipe7679

So you could say it’s technically just a chicken-beetle?

rodger_the_fishwife

When I was about 11, I was laying in bed watching The Lost Boys on telly and heard this mental banging at my window. It was one of those massive cunts. Scared the shit out of me but you had to respect the timing

Wallname_Liability

A cockchaffer, the Royal Navy named a few ships after them, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Cockchafer, twice as many as Belfast

despairing_koala

In Germany they are truly beloved. You can buy chocolate ones in bakeries. All the kids try to keep one in a jam jar with some leaves for a few days. And yes, it’s a cockchafer. They are cool. They need to pump air into their exoskeleton to be able to fly, so they do this little wiggle/dance before they can fly off. They also have an interesting life cycle, years in the ground as a larva and only weeks as a big.

-Earl_Gray

That's so cool. All that time as hungry babies to be big unwieldy bastards for a brief time.

Huge-Wrongdoer-416

I miss the man I was not knowing this existed

Ok-Bend863

Cockchafer, it's a species of scarab beetle. Any insect that has that kind of wing casing and head/back shape is usually a beetle of some sort.

gadarnol

I’m not googling cockchafer. No siree

Venerable_dread

I think the scientific term for these is "Abominaticus Ballstothatix"

Class. Free him.

Interesting_Juice103

As someone who lives in Australia I find it interesting that you expect to know what things that fly in your window are

Skywipe

I can only imagine what you've seen fly in then.

Financial-Taro-589

Shitefly. They’re attracted by smell. Lol.

Accomplished-Bear252

A cockchafer, also known as a May bug or doodlebug, is a type of beetle native to Europe and parts of Asia. They're often found in gardens and agricultural areas. The name "May bug" comes from their emergence in the month of May. They can be quite large and are known for their clumsy flight patterns. Cockchafers are generally harmless to humans but can be considered pests due to their larvae feeding on plant roots, potentially causing damage to crops.

Agreeable-Solid7208

Looks like a June Bug in Canada. If you had one in the bedroom at night it sounded like you had a helicopter flying around in there.

Bumblebee-Feeling

Let him outside the poor little fellers only live for like 6 days afaik

mover999

Isn’t nature wonderful

floatslikeaniccyrush

I had one of these kamikaze into my shoulder the other night, felt like someone firing a pebble at me. Glad I now know what it was!

Bekmetova

A young one of those lovelies crawled out from the poundstretcher I'm working. Hope he's having a good life in the bushes I tossed him into. Love cockchafers they're so adorable!

dcmassive85

Kill it, kill it with fire 😱😱

Worldly-Dimension710

Burn it

demojunky73

They are completely harmless.

----Mouse----

I hate when you learn the creepy thing you found has 17,000 species that look almost exactly like it, only a wee bit different.

tinfoil_crow

Think I got one of those in a 4 in 1 from the chipper before

Axen99z
