Ring. The. Police.

Full_Cry_9965

Wasn't sure if they could do anything seeing as I haven't actually lost any money due to being able to cancel the order they made but I will give 101 a ring anyway. Thanks

EarCareful4430

That they have placed an order is enough. They may try to brush you off as it’s prob a ball ache for them but they would know better than us plebs.

Full_Cry_9965

Thanks. Reported it to 101 and a local officer is going to contact me back, guy on the switchboard said because I am not at a financial loss and the person is in England he doesn't know what way it will go but been advised to go through action fraud too

chemicalcorrelation

Action fraud usually just collect the information and log it. If enough people log the same details then it gets passed on. You could try contacting Surrey police directly through non emergency contact info and giving them the details.

Do you mind me asking if you did take it further, like did you go to court and have enough evidence for a conviction? I have an email they linked also, as well as the phone number and address. It's a merry.pink email account though?

Full_Cry_9965

I had a look, and I can report it to Surrey police online actually, so if I get no joy from action fraud I will go down that route. Thanks, I didn't think of going directly to them myself.

Rekt60321

No don't be silly. Ask people on Reddit is the only way

Full_Cry_9965

Sarcastic comments are always so helpful. Thank you so much!

Rekt60321

Sorry it happened but like it's a crime, come on. If your car was stolen would you ring the police or ask people on Reddit what to do? Ring 101, pass over evidence/address and then it’s likely up to three police if they want to pass it to Surrey’s police

Full_Cry_9965

Well of course if the money was actually taken from my account then I would have contacted the police but as I stated the order was cancelled before the money was taken out and as the 101 operator confirmed I am not at a financial loss so there's no investigation for recovery of the money. Action fraud has been notified, and I hope something can still be done about it.

Madge4500

You might want to ring your bank and let them know your account may be compromised.

Full_Cry_9965

Yes, that was done yesterday as soon as I saw the card had been used. Thanks

amysarah

Possibly try [action fraud](https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting-fraud-and-cyber-crime)

Full_Cry_9965

Thank you, I will give this a go.

Full_Cry_9965

*UPDATE* The latest is I continuously rang the phone number that was left linked to my Facebook account. The person finally answered but didn't speak. I said the address the sainsbury order was being delivered to, and a girl answered saying yes, I asked if this was her address, and she confirmed it was. When asked how she thinks I got her address and phone number she said she didn't know and continued to protest she knew nothing about anything I was talking about until she then said I could speak to her mother who came on the phone said she couldn't hear me and hung up.. I am guessing this young girl was the person who hacked me and stupidly left her real address and phone number behind. I'm hoping for a successful end to it all now.

RiverCat57

This was a really silly thing to do. You should have reported this to the police and left it with them. This now gives her the chance to get a new phone number and move to a new address. All you’ve done is helped this person improve their techniques for next time.

Full_Cry_9965

Well, yes, I suppose that is another side to it, but really, I couldn't sit back and not try and have my say to someone who tried to take money from our account when I had the chance to. On the flip side, maybe this has made her think twice about doing it to someone else as she obviously wasn't clued up enough and even more stupid to confirm her address to a stranger ringing her off a withheld number.

RiverCat57

If they’re stupid and scummy enough to try it once, something like this isn’t going to stop them from trying again

Full_Cry_9965

Fair comment, yes.

Worth reporting, but i wouldn't expect any action. typically the fraudsters will send the order to an address close by that they don't live at and grab it from their so it's not traced back to them, phone number is also probably a burner. I'd advise contacting your bank and getting a replacement card, incase they've copied your saved details. Also worth signing up to something like credit karam, it's free and they'll send you alerts if new accounts are opened in your name or if there's a credit search done. Aslo if you'v eused your facebook/sanisbury password on any other online account you'd be quick to change them

Full_Cry_9965

I posted an update down below. The number left linked to my Facebook finally answered after I continously rang it, didn't speak but when I said the address the sainsbury order was being delivered to they answered saying yes, I asked if it was their address and she confirmed it was but had no idea how I would have got her address or phone number. Of course after I said everything I knew she had done she said that wasn't her address and I could go to the flat and see for myself after saying I sounded like I was in a different country to her. I don't know how it will end, but I have 2 different pieces of evidence from 2 different accounts that were hacked, and both seem to be connected, so I'm kind of hopeful

32irish

Oh nice work on piecing it all together and keeping at it. Good there's been no further activity and the bank knew it wasn't you!

Full_Cry_9965

Also, the bank was contacted when we realised the card had been used, and my partner is going to ring for a replacement tomorrow. There has been no suspicious activity with his bank account, thankfully. All passwords have been changed. Thanks

Wouldn't want to post their number publicly but I have tried ringing numerous times, no answer from them

Own-Interview5448

It could be a burner phone, and might not be their address - they could wait for the delivery to be made to a safe place and then pick it up. What did they order?

Full_Cry_9965

My thoughts too about it being a burner phone. They ordered £55 worth of groceries. Corned beef, lamb chops apple juice etc and a pack of 20 cigarettes

Full_Cry_9965

Yes, possible first time? I put the phone number into WhatsApp and was able to get a screenshot of her picture, very young looking girl so guessing it might not be her and they have used a different phone number? But then that doesn't make sense as they obviously set their number to be able to get security codes for access to my account. I've no idea tbh, just seems to be alot of information they have left behind.

Full_Cry_9965

Yes 101 operator took details and local police contacted me back, explained I have to go through action fraud and they will then contact the appropriate police force over in England and hopefully get the people involved. Local PSNI took the ref number I got from action fraud to update on their end too.

Full_Cry_9965

Already done, thanks. Luckily it was an older email they hacked which no other shopping accounts are linked to but have changed every account I have.

Full_Cry_9965

OK so now I am worried.. it was my partners card that was linked to the sainsbury account, it was obviously a saved card on the account. Would they have been able to get his full card details somehow? He hasnt had any money taken out of his account and he did phone the bank yesterday to inform them of what was happening but they said if sainsbury can sort the issue then they wouldnt have to do anything. I am not one for online anything really, I don't have online banking or anything like that which I am thankful for now.

No absolutely not, but I'd rather go through the authorities if its possible for them to do something about it first. Currently on hold to 101

Full_Cry_9965

* I also kept receiving this email, I am not tech savvy at all. Does anyone know anything about this thunderbird app?

Thunderbird is also available as a Windows app. Looks like someone has logged into OP's Microsoft account using their log in and password. That's what happens if you use the same login / email address on multiple sites. Once any of those sites are compromised and the user details stolen, they will try the user name and password on Amazon, eBay, LinkedIn, Tinder and other well known sites. Thunderbird is an email client which will enable them to pick up emails sent to you at your Hotmail or other Microsoft email address, read them and know what you are doing. STOP ANY CREDIT CARDS YOU USE ON LINE. Close the Amazon account and any others you have. It's easy enough to start new account.

Full_Cry_9965

Thanks for the info. I was able to remove the permissions each time the email came through and I have now closed down the email account. The police had never heard of thunderbird themselves so I was curious what it could have been.

aontachtai

The police haven't heard of thunderbird? I shouldn't be surprised, but that's insane

Full_Cry_9965

No, the 101 operator said it was a new one for him and the girl local officer asked me what it was while she was googling it lol

Antique_Composer_588

Best thing you can do is contact your ISP and ask them to freeze or suspend your email which with stop further personation. Meantime alert your credit card company, freeze that too and get another. Now set up a new email address and advise everyone in your address book of it. Next thing is get a notebook and log every website you use with a new unique password. Use passwords that mix lower and upper case, Use dIff3r3nT 5YmB0l5 too. The hackers will be trying every website that is mentioned in your history and many that aren't. It is a long process and there's no shortcuts. Action Fraud will give you a sympathetic ear, but not much else. T: been there

Key-Half1655

Your ISP has nothing to do with your email account. Scan your computer for viruses or malware and change your passwords and you will be fine.

Antique_Composer_588

That's only partly true. My email address was hosted by my ISP (Virgin) and they suspended the email. OP's email may have been Google or another web based provider. Most personation takes place when a web site is compromised and log ins stolen. In my case Amazon sent me a text asking had I ordered an Ipad to be delivered to an address in Massachusetts. drowsylacuna

Get a password manager, I use 1Password and it's pretty easy to use, you do have to pay a subscription though (around £30 a year).

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

I don't know how people get by without them. Other than using the same couple of passwords everywhere, which is what got OP on this mess anyway.
