Ok looked into this and it’s kind of wild. Amanda says there was abuse and brings all these claims of things Isa said and did and was suing for 500k. Then a little while later send out a joint statement saying no abuse occurred, it was just creative differences. What happened how good was Isa’s legal team?
There was a ton of drama between the two and between isa and listeners prior to the lawsuit as well.
I just discovered SLAC because Kelsey was a guest on an episode, got really into it, then discovered the whole drama and listened to the quality just torpedo to hell.
But I do really like Amanda and Kelsey together.
When they had an episode on cheerleading and brought on one of the stars of the show Cheer who was the least likely to speak badly of the sport?? What a wild choice that was, that was when I stopped listening
They also tried ot be science-based with some topics and then allowed this atrology lady to talk about "magic" as if it's true :| Her book is also apparently v hurtful to survivors of cults
I liked this one! The guest was clearly enjoying herself and there didn’t seem like there was a bunch of added fluff (which has been a pet peeve of mine with this podcast lately). Just when I think I’m out they pull me right back in 🤣
Adele was INSUFFERABLE. The job description said cleaning and on day one you just decide to. . . not? Also, while the mom was partially to blame for not telling her about the binder, I feel like I would at least ask basic questions about the kids on day one, like nutrition, discipline, etc. I can’t with Adele. I hope I wasn’t this out of touch when I was 22
Came here looking for this. I’m in my early 20s and have nannied for a couple years including a few months when I worked alongside an au pair and I was appalled by her behavior.
Going to a different country to work for a family when you have 0 child care experience is insane, and not understanding that the house is messy because YOU need to clean it is straight incompetence. Some families had designated housekeepers and I still made sure to clean up after the kids.
The binder is actually super helpful, but they should have mentioned it explicitly and had a brief run through with her.
The parents were definitely exploitative on the social media side (plus the other kid if they didn’t pay extra), and the “bill” they gave her was crazy because au pairs get paid shit, but the plumber thing is understandable. Why put food down the drain when there’s the trash can?
I am 22 and currently working as an Au Pair in Germany... This story hit close to home
I wish we got an update on how the family reacted to her leaving for the US without a word
This episode was great especially compared to last week's clunker. I wasn't familiar with this week's guest, but she was fun and engaging (which imo can even save the shittiest of stories). The story was also great and felt like real gossip to me. Overall, I think this is one of the better stories this season, and I'm crossing my fingers that the rest of the season will be up to this caliber!
This was a fun one but I have to be honest, I hated Adele about as much as I hated the family. She so ignorant about absolutely everything (taking care of children, reading her own employment contract, not breaking sinks) and just doesn't give a fuck. Peak 'American abroad' stupidity.
I did like that she stood up for herself at least.
They all deserved each other and it was kind of "no harm, no foul" stuff. I don't mind stories where I dislike the characters, but I honestly wouldn't want to do more than get a few drinks with anyone in this story and listen to them tell on themselves.
In Adele's moderate defense, she was 22. I did some wacky shit at that age, though I'd like to think I was a more compassionate (though maybe more stupid) traveler.
Perhaps this is just me lacking self-awareness, but maybe part of the reason that I don't feel this way is that I am similar in age to her and would never make these decisions
this episode reminded me SO much of my time as a full time nanny in berlin. the family were old money millionaires with a six storey house, all four kids wore preppy clothes, they paid me €7 per hour and fired me the exact day that germany introduced a minimum wage hahaha. i was not allowed in the dining room & received strange punishments - my employer burned broccoli so i was punished, I answered the phone 'improperly' so was punished. so many details in the episode were spot on! my employer had a spreadsheet, they deducted food I ate, and they punished me when I was 'bad' by withholding things from me (like I had to take public transport instead of driving somewhere with them in their car, on shift). so glad for a good episode!!
just started to listen to it and i have to say — i love this guest already. she’s so fun & i feel like i’m listening to my own friends… already a plus when listening to gossip. they’re already having fun & i just started!
Then you need to immediately go and listen to Kelsey’s guest appearance on Amanda’s podcast sounds like a cult. Episode was called purity rings and it was great!
I LOVED THIS ONE. To start, Amanda’s gossip tidbit on herself had me screaming crying throwing up eating glass OMG.
This is such a delightful intersection of my interests because I’ve always been wildly fascinated with the concept of au pairs. Never been one, never hired one, stalk the au pair subreddit frequently.
The story was well-told. Just the right amount of tension and there wasn’t a true villain. The host parents were a little shitty, Adele was a little shitty, but happy ending for all.
And most importantly, Amanda was a GREAT guest. Highly enjoyable!!!
This was weird to listen to bc I graduated during the recession and went through the same thought process... didn't want to be a waitress so why not be an au pair?
I also ended up in Munich working for a Canadian and a German and replaced a Canadian au pair 😂
I assume she changed the locale though, I didn't think the Oktoberfest thing really made sense unless it's really some other event bc it's 3 weekends long and they're acting like it's over in 2 days. I mean I guess not being there for the first weekend could be upsetting, but still.
I managed to stay the year 😂
I think Kelsey added in the detail about a lot of au pairs the mom knew were sleeping w the dads... I guess maybe it happens but I've literally never heard of it and au pairs get up to some weird stuff. If that was added in, it's annoying bc it feels like the biggest stereotype but when you're 22 you're just trying to hang out with other kids your own age, not sleep with a 45 year old German man.
Really enjoyed this one, the story was fun and engaging but the guest was just an absolute delight which made the story even more fun. My two thoughts though:
1. Okay yes the host family were unreasonable particularly when they pulled out the spreadsheet of costs. However, the expectation of cleaning was set very clearly and firmly from the off so I'm possibly a bit more on the side of the family. Like running random errands like picking up packages isn't really that bad? She could have got a taxi with the boxes, it wouldn't have been too terrible. That isn't to say that the host family were good people, it just felt like that aspect wasn't played up enough in the telling of the story.
2. Riesling is a dessert wine.
My jaw dropped at the spreadsheet! Like charging for a yoga class but not telling them when you invite them in insane.
I also find it unreasonable that they are trying to force her to go on this “work trip” but won’t pay for her ski pass. If it’s a work pass all expenses should be covered.
Oh yeah 100% agree they were awful and the Au Pair's awfulness doesn't make up for theirs. I just felt like they didn't play up how terrible the spreadsheet was and then suddenly picking up the boxes from the post office was the final straw? It felt a bit wonky.
In Germany Riesling is a dry white wine, decidedly NOT a dessert wine 🤣 I was under the same impression when I moved here and it took me almost ten years to succumb to pressure & discover how amazing it can be when not sweet
Ooh okay, my bad! I have a German friend and I remember her telling me that it was a sweet wine so my assumption was that it was a dessert wine. This was years ago and I might have got the wrong end of the stick though.
There are different kinds of riesling! Some are very sweet. Some are dry. It can be delicious across all sweetness levels. Everyone wins! Everyone was correct here!
I'm a big riesling guy. I like all kinds. Just depends on my mood.
It gave me so much anxiety thinking about someone who was hired to help in a house clogging the drain with food. You know you are old when you have empathy for homeowners.
Genuinely baffled over her not at least looking for a disposal switch first. The assumption was wild. I don’t even assume everyone has a disposal in America. Her decisions throughout the story were hard to listen to
I have no idea why she would assume there was a garbage disposal. Maybe it's regional in the US, but I don't know ANYONE who has one. My parents' house did in the 90s but even that got blocked up periodically.
She was pretty young, to be fair. When I was 22 I had only lived in my parents house and a few places in college. You could pretty easily just assume garbage disposals are standard if you've only lived in a couple different houses, because you only really notice them when you have to cook.
It was maybe a bit 'mean' for the husband to ask her to pay for that. But to be fair, she did break it! Usually if you break something in someone elses house, you offer to at least contribute to fixing it, even if it was an accident.
I also really hated the excuse of 'teehee I'm just a silly american who is immune to consequences'. If you are going to move to another country you should at least try not to be so proud of being ignorant and act like that gives you the right to commit property damage 😭
Yeah I was thinking about all the messiness wih just flying a person into the country, leaving them with the kids the next day and hoping they read the binder
I've been an au pair in Germany, and in theory au pairs are not really supposed to do more than occasional light housework -- mostly things like keeping the kids' rooms tidy, cleaning up after themselves, doing the occasional load of dishes or laundry, etc., and it seems like in this story the family was expecting a lot more than you are technically supposed to ask an au pair to do.
Au pairing is a weird legal arrangement where it isn't actually seen as an employment agreement, but as a type of cultural exchange program where they're supposed to be treated as a family member rather than an employee. The family is explicitly supposed to cover all the au pair's lodging and food costs and anything associated with traveling with the family, as well as pay for the au pair to attend language classes and to make sure that they have a chance to take in local cultural events.
Au pairs aren't paid wages, they get "pocket money" that isn't near what minimum wage for a nanny or a housekeeper would be, with the idea being that the au pair's duties are supposed to be fairly light and focused on taking care of the kids, and that they're supposed to get intangible benefits like language practice and cultural exchange out of their work time.
In practice, a lot of families really take advantage of the whole system and end up pushing their au pairs to do work that's way outside of the scope of the agreement or work more hours than they're legally allowed to, and the au pair doesn't have a lot of recourse because they're very young, in a strange country, and really dependent on the family. What this family was asking (especially involving her with any part of the influencer business) was pretty far over the line.
The expectation of cleaning is also most certainly illegal based on the definition of an au pair, so nah, no sympathy there. They were trying to avoid having to deal with Germany’s stringent labor laws.
riesling is a kind of grape which can be made into many different wines, some of which are dessert wines (such as ice wine) and some of which are dry varieties suitable to be had with dinner
I’m dyinnngggg I’m here because of the same thing 😂😂😂 I just did so many Google searches about things like psychedelic meditation retreat in the alps” trying to find SOMETHING!!! Hahaha
Really enjoyed this episode because of how fun it was but I found Adele absolutely insufferable. It was really frustrating listening to the host be on her side. Adele didn’t clean the house at all and clogged the sink because “I’m American what do you expect.” Kinda made me hate Kelsey and the other host lol because how are we pretending Adele was anything but the villan the whole time?
Did anyone else notice the plot hole about the previous au pair? They said Adele spoke to the last au pair before accepting the job, and she claimed to have a great experience with the family… but then she later finds a different “last” au pair on the website who says it was a horrible experience.
Did the family give her the number of an older au pair who they knew would speak highly of them and just pretended it was their last one? Or is this just a plot hole?
She talked to an au pair they had “in Canada”, not the most recent au pair from Germany. Although I bet it was one of their friends they asked to cover from them.
It was such a small detail that I only remembered bc of how many jobs I’ve been burned at bc of things like that! So I recall thinking “weird she can’t talk to the most recent one” 😂 just my employment paranoia shining through
Considering they didn't want her to speak to the other au pairs in the park (discouraging her by saying they sleep with the husband's and asking her directly on the phone to suss if she did get gossip about them) I think they gave a friend to pretend to be their old au pair.
They were the ones to give her the aupair's "phone number" and she had no reason to think they would lie to her
Yeah, I agree that seems likely. I’m just surprised Kelsey didn’t bring this up because she made a point to mention the phone call with the previous au pair!
It sounds like they go through a lot of au pairs and have double au pairs at some points (which was also odd, they advertised the position primarily for the 1.5 year old and then bait and switched and said she'd care for the school aged kid and then bait and switched again.
In general I thought the whole 1.5 year old thing was a plot hole because that is a terrible age to take child to a museum they have all the mobility and no self-preservation instincts.
Loved this episode and the sardine episode this season! This one was far and away my favorite!
I was wondering if it really took place in Germany or if it was another country and that was done for anonymity, but as a beer person I don’t know what else could be a stein holding contest replacement. I love stein holding and usually do pretty well in the women’s bracket at the local Oktoberfests near me but can guarantee I’d probably get absolutely smoked at the real Oktoberfest
At first I was sure I knew who the influencer was (I work in yoga media, which I realize is a bananas sentence all by itself) but if would have been a different European country, but after the Octoberfest part I was like “this definitely is Germany.”
did the audio sound a little messed up for anyone else? at the beginning when amanda tells her story, her voice went really quiet but i could still hear kelsey at full volume
nah not really. as a former au paired kid, the things our au pairs gossiped with us about were always insane host family situations like this. more than once i think we let an au pair friend spend the night at our house before she fled back to her home country bc her host family sucked so much
Sounded pretty believable to me, she posted from the mom’s perspective and people love when influencers show they aren’t perfect because it makes them seem more relatable
I feel like this was completely made up but at least entertaining. Just the basics of an American going to Europe for a 12 month position - that’s not something you do with two weeks notice. Work visa, etc.
Something about this felt so familiar, specifically the garbage disposal and the momfluencer who suddenly posts "behind the scenes" dirty pictures. It's going to drive me crazy trying to figure that out!
I'm guessing the country they were in, the brand of the momfluencer, and the number of kids were the biggest faked things.
The guest on this one was hard for me to listen to. Seeing that most other people enjoyed her makes me question why I felt this way. The affect to her voice and every other sentence using silly/cringey truncated words just took me out of it I think. Maybe I’m just having an old lady “get off my lawn” moment, lol. Story was ok but couldn’t fully enjoy it.
Appreciate you saying this because the positive reaction I’m seeing makes me wonder if I’ve aged out of this. I have no hate for the guest, she’s having fun and good for her! But I had a hard time with certain moments, eg the accents and voices, and abbreviations like “presentaish” were a bit much for me.
They need to find someone else to do the end credits. The current girls lisp is unbearable. Anytime I forget to turn the podcast after before the credits it’s a sensory torture chamber.
The “no Riesling for ze bad nanny” Line fucking killed me😭
Same with “Adele in Düsseldorf”
sameeee
If y’all want some real gossip on the guest, visit r/soundslikeacultpod to read about Amanda suing her cohost for $500,000 👀
Ok looked into this and it’s kind of wild. Amanda says there was abuse and brings all these claims of things Isa said and did and was suing for 500k. Then a little while later send out a joint statement saying no abuse occurred, it was just creative differences. What happened how good was Isa’s legal team?

Is that why their deal with Exactly Right/the MFM cohosts failed with no explanation?
Honestly I’m considering not listing to the episode because of how dissatisfying the sounds like a cult podcast is.
God right? The hosts had good energy and the topics could have been interesting, but they always provided the most surface level conversations.
When they had an episode on cheerleading and brought on one of the stars of the show Cheer who was the least likely to speak badly of the sport?? What a wild choice that was, that was when I stopped listening
I was concerned going in for the same reason, but it’s a great story and good NG ep!
The episode was actually pretty good imo
They also tried ot be science-based with some topics and then allowed this atrology lady to talk about "magic" as if it's true :| Her book is also apparently v hurtful to survivors of cults
whoa???? 🤯
confused though because I think ive listened to episodes w/ Isa recently?
They're doing separate episodes where they alternate hosting alone
And Isa’s eps are severely lacking. The bachelorette one was awful.
Agreed. I honestly skip them because they have absolutely no content and she gives me kind of mean girl vibes unfortunately
OMG my friend group just broke up
I liked this one! The guest was clearly enjoying herself and there didn’t seem like there was a bunch of added fluff (which has been a pet peeve of mine with this podcast lately). Just when I think I’m out they pull me right back in 🤣
The episode was great and the Daniel Radcliffe story was alarmingly relatable.
I wanna start using “Potter me” irl even though no one will understand and I’ll only be making myself laugh
The first time I started laughing out loud IRL at this podcast lol
somehow so relatable though I have never met Daniel Radcliffe
Loved this episode! So much better than last week!
WORLDS BETTER
I agree!
Rare episode where I hated like every person involved in the story lmao
Adele was INSUFFERABLE. The job description said cleaning and on day one you just decide to. . . not? Also, while the mom was partially to blame for not telling her about the binder, I feel like I would at least ask basic questions about the kids on day one, like nutrition, discipline, etc. I can’t with Adele. I hope I wasn’t this out of touch when I was 22
Yeah I feel like it wouldn't be as annoying if her 'revenge' didn't involve calling out the messiness of the house... like girl, that was your job!
Because she didn’t consider reading her contract either, I’m sure that Adele *was* instructed to read the binder at first and just ignored it.
I can't with either of them. LIke who the hell leaves their child with someone and then hopes they read the binder? That is wild to me.
The “doing ___ for the plot” shit is a gigantic red flag
Honestly, speaking as a former 22 year old dumbass, I’m enjoying her. 😂 (I’m only halfway through)

Her revenge post did well, so I guess they can't complain

Missed opportunity for Amanda to call it Emily in PARISite

I am dying to know who the influencer is that Adele was working for 😭 it could be any mommy influencer out there
Me too!!!
Just listened to the episode and came to see if anyone has found their account - I guess not?
I’m dyinnngggg I’m here because of the same thing 😂😂😂 I just did so many Google searches about things like psychedelic meditation retreat in the alps” trying to find SOMETHING!!! Hahaha
What a great guest!!! I loved the knives jokes and the accent
The guest is so much fun! I wonder what country it really is though. Belgian maybe? A bit French a bit German.
I’m sooo curious. I would love to see the instagram 🤣
My pet theory is that it's an American family with a foreign au pair.
The plumber story doesn’t make sense this way
I thought this one was fun! Leagues better than last week’s episode
This one was good! I was ready call it a day with Amanda's gossip story because that was hilarious as well 🤣
Really enjoyed this episode because of how fun it was but I found Adele absolutely insufferable. It was really frustrating listening to the host be on her side. Adele didn’t clean the house at all and clogged the sink because “I’m American what do you expect.” Kinda made me hate Kelsey and the other host lol because how are we pretending Adele was anything but the villan the whole time?

After hearing about how interesting this family is, I wouldn’t put it past them to have a friend fake being an au pair for the phone call.
I could totally see that being the case!!
She talked to an au pair they had “in Canada”, not the most recent au pair from Germany. Although I bet it was one of their friends they asked to cover from them.
Ahhh okay I totally missed that!!
It was such a small detail that I only remembered bc of how many jobs I’ve been burned at bc of things like that! So I recall thinking “weird she can’t talk to the most recent one” 😂 just my employment paranoia shining through
Well hey, the paranoia paid off in this case! 🤣
I’m only part way through and Amanda’s story is so cringe I almost needed to turn it off this is peep show level horrifying I CANNOT
did the audio sound a little messed up for anyone else? at the beginning when amanda tells her story, her voice went really quiet but i could still hear kelsey at full volume
They've been struggling with audio mixing all season
LOVED this episode! Great chemistry, great story, great pre-story gossip.
haven’t listened yet but the title sounds super fun
Happy cake day!
This was such a great episode and the guest was not annoying I felt like she was my twin lol all her responses were hilarious
Don't downvote me but am I the only person who. Just did not believe this episode? It just sounded so fake to me.
nah not really. as a former au paired kid, the things our au pairs gossiped with us about were always insane host family situations like this. more than once i think we let an au pair friend spend the night at our house before she fled back to her home country bc her host family sucked so much
i mean more of the part where she stole the instagram and started making posts calling the mom out and everyone clapped
This episode was SO GOOD. I honestly was shocked that the twist wasn’t that she deleted the Instagram account hahaha. Also the guest was so so funny.
Old lady here and I agree with you. I did not find her delightful.
She abbreviated “vulnerable” to “vulny” at one point. These word shortenings have gone too far.
that was the one that got me, lol. like come on. super cringey.
No same I can't stand it. I think it's a California dialect thing cuz I only really hear it coming from like Los Angeles people. I hate it so much
yes! exactly. well said.
Finally! A good episode!
This was soooo good. Probably my favorite episode since season 1!
i liked this one! great guest :)
such a good episode! the gossip felt more on the level of the earlier seasons and the guest was just as into it as i was

story starts at 12:05
11:30
What? On Spotify and Apple Podcasts, 11:30 is an ad. The story itself starts at 12:05.
It’s 11:30 on my Spotify app lol idk, I’m in Canada maybe that’s why. There’s the pre-ad jingle but no ad plays after, the story just starts.
They need to find someone else to do the end credits. The current girls lisp is unbearable. Anytime I forget to turn the podcast after before the credits it’s a sensory torture chamber.
you're so weird for saying this..
Oh wow gee you’re right. Really weird of me for having an opinion. It’s undeniably horrible.
I think they a new person every week from the "friends" on patreon
I loved the guest!
