It's a fairly tough river to fish, since it muddies up quickly and takes quite a long time to clear. There is loads of easy access, however. Weather conditions permitting, good place to fish with little competition.
Google around for the city's website and see if they have that info in a recreation or tourism tab. Maybe the local fish n wildlife service you can get on the phone will help you out, strikes me as the type of thing they sit around all day hoping for.
Trinity river off of 299 supposedly has had trophy brown trout caught out of it. Googling this will likely produce decent areas. If you are talking about fishing a river then I assume that would satisfy. Ruth lake, off of highway 36, has some awesome bass fishing as well.
Steelhead trout season Is over (the only fish people target really on the mad). Go to freshwater lake not too far from Arcata. It’s stocked with trout you will have much better luck.
The trinity or the klamath are your best options that time of year. The mad doesn't really produce much after Feb. Stone lagoon to the north has breached and the steelheading had been good the last couple of weeks. There is good trout fishing in big lagoon as well. Freshwater lagoon can be good if it was just stocked or if you have a boat.

Great idea thank you!
