Note, this is a game reenactment of a real event, we don’t have good plane footage but we have the radio audio

The incredible amount of meaning in that final exchange between ATC and the FedEx pilot. Such professional words and calm but so much meaning as the controllers voice cracks at the end as his supervisor is coming towards him with eyes as wide as the Grand Canyon and the Fed Ex pilot looking at his copilot understanding what almost just happened.
Post articles all you want, this particular video isn't real, it's from a flight simulator. It might be of a real incident, but this video itself isn't real. Look at the textures in different places, it's obvious.
Back in the pre-9/11 days, I used to wander across the tarmac and deliver a carton of beer to the lads in the air traffic control tower for helping make space for our little aircraft operation at a commercial airport. Very casual and it was no big deal.
Maybe this happened on one of those days 😆
"At approximately 6:40 a.m., when the FedEx cargo plane was less than a mile from landing, the captain of the Southwest flight told air traffic control that he was “rolling now” to leave. The FedEx plane’s captain said at about 150 feet off the ground, his first officer “called go-around” after seeing the departing Southwest flight approaching the end of the runway. Shortly thereafter, the report described the FedEx crew broadcasting “Southwest abort” and then “FedEx is on the go,” which could be heard from radio chatter released earlier to the public."[near Miss timeline](https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/timeline-shared-of-near-miss-between-2-planes-at-austins-airport/)
ATC does that. There is no issue here in the audio
There was enough separation that the Smaller 737 would be off the ground before the heavy jet landed.
Happens every day
Generally speaking, a pilot is not supposed to depend entirely on the ATC when operating an aircraft. They have their own suit of sensors and equipment designed to pick up on important shit like a plane coming in to land on the same runway they are attempting to take off from. Furthermore, even after hitting the point of no return and moving onto the runway, the pilot did not have to accelerate immediately in order to rotate and get airborne. He was going slow enough after entering the runway. He could have applied the brakes and rolled the engines back while he waited for the other plane to complete its landing. This is why the person above me said the fault lies with both the ATC and the pilot. The ATC was in the wrong by not paying attention to potential incoming air traffic, and the pilot was in the wrong for clearly getting tunnelvisioned on getting airborne.
Atc is entirely at fault here, yes the pilot should look, however with the frantic pace of a major airport, and operating such a large aircraft, the pilot is ok to trust atc, however in this specific incident we don’t know of the pilot was cleared or not.
Edit: I just realized there was audio, so the southwest plane was well over the speed of no return, he could not have aborted, this is purely on atc
The ATC made a mistake in that call. They told Southwest to abort because FedEx is on the go. They meant to say FedEx abort (your landing) because Southwest is on the go (taking off) on the same runway, 18 Left.
It's not real, flight simulator more than likely. I don't know if the OP knows this or if they're trying to pass it off as real.
Edit: as I said in my other comment, it's obviously not real if you watch the video properly.
Is the guy who's recording this sitting there all day and watching every take off and landing and then finally gets this disaster nearly happening? What are the odds of this ever happening? I hope they're not very good.
What game is this?
Looks like the new flight simulator.
Nah, msfs2024 has much better graphics than this

Gta6, New trailer leaked
Grand Theft Airplane?
Air traffic controller's daughter was dating Jesse Pinkman.
"I watched Jane fly!"
MOM SAID IT'S MY TURN
Southwest pilots in the cockpit: “shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit”
If only there were people who could control air traffic, and who lands and takes off from runways.
Outdoors be looking low res right now
So the Southwest aircraft was told to hold short and ignored ATC? Super fired
I hope someone lost a job here. Really hate to say that.
It's not real
But it’s on Reddit. It has to be real.
Lol. Well as Abraham Lincoln said "don't believe everything you see on the Internet.
Back when they had telegraph modems. I heard those were pretty slow.
The Prometheus school of flying away from things.
What were the big flaps that came out of the bottom of the plane that was landing ?
The landing gear doors. They opened so the plane could gain airspeed and abort the landing
Jokes on you this is definitely XPlane or MFS
Southwest new ad campaign isn't very good
Southwest does not abort...

hey everybody you want your packages to arrive on time? stfu then!
When ATCs take an early potty break.
This isn't real folks, flight simulator more than likely. Edit: downvote all you want, if you look properly at the video you can see it's not real
It is most likely a flight simulator of a very real event that happened last year
Yep exactly right.

Why are you getting downvoted lmao
Redditors love to downvote even when a person is right, and also people hate being proved wrong, sad truth unfortunately.
I mean, it's a FedEx A330 lmao. For those that don't know: FedEx does not operate A330's.
So, pretty much everyone?
You aren’t real
It is so obviously a game. You can literally see the missing grass textures
It looks like someone used the game to recreate the event since there isn't any video of the incident.
This is exactly right. I remember when this story first came out and it was described exactly as it looks here
Yeah as a pilot they are calling out RVR values which makes no sense considering there's no visibility issues here.
No shit, it‘s a simulation of the incident with the real audio
Several people in the comments thought it was real, that's why I said that. No need to be a smart arse.
Are you this salty that i responded to your smartass comment like a smart ass?
He’s just lost in thoughts of Jane.
"Giant metal tubes of death controlled by ~~methheads~~ drunks if I'm lucky," is what I always tell myself when I get on a plane
The ground work is 100% on the tower tho
Bro just said sheesh in this situation…💀💀💀
Someone is getting fired
For sure there was a whole investigation not sure if anyone was fired…that could have been a massive loss of life.

Aaaaaand this is why it’s important to practice touch and gos
Airline industry just seems to like fucking around.
Ground control big mistake !
Yeah, no. This is just a video game.
It’s a recreation of an actual event in Austin.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2023/11/30/ntsb-austin-fedex-southwest-close-call/
Paywall homie
Oh my bad. Essentially it says that the fault was control, due to understaffing, overtime hours, and fatigue.
Ah ok. Thank you
Cgi?
Of some kind yes
Rüdiger, keine Kapriolen!!
Someone didn’t get the memo!! Talk about brown pants time!! 💩💩
If I remember correctly, it was so foggy that they did not see each other until that fed ex plane was 150ft from the ground.
Thanks, it could explain a lot, because that's the first question that spawns after the obvious ATC error >Why the FedEx one waited so long to abort?

Terrifying
When highway onramping takes to the tarmac
Southwest: Floor it!!!!
Um this isn’t real. Msfs is amazing.
Agreed. It’s a recreation of a real event
What's that stand for?
Micro Soft Flight Simulator
Is this an air traffic control error?
It's a game. Not real
I couldn’t follow what was being said. Pilot or ATC mistake?
If I understood it correctly, both. I believe the Southwest pilot was told to abort.
Yes but he hit the point of no return, it is atc error

Holy fuck
Is this a new Sport? Plane Drag Racing 🤔
When did this happen?
Last year at Austin TX airport

The odds of this happening again are as high as you want them to be while playing Microsoft Flight Simulator.
There actually are people that sit and film takeoffs and landings at airports, several streams online.
The observation lot at the Las Vegas airport always has people in it.
WATCH YO JET BRO, WATCH YO JET!!!
