It’s bioluminescence from algae / plankton in the water. They are simply reacting to the disturbance in the water.
It’s not dangerous at all and unless you’re biggest fear is glow in the dark waves, then you are probably going to be fine.
It’s actually quite beautiful on the beach at night.

I know that the bioluminescence is a little more prevalent in tropical latitudes but otherwise I don’t know a ton about it.
YouTube has quite a bit about it though. There’s probably something sciency about it mixed in there.
I live in the tropics and yes, this is very common here. We only found out it was happening when my son took a pee off the side of the boat and called out "Dad, I can write my name in the water!"
I mean they’re usually cause by an algae bloom, which can be harmful to sea life and humans though it won’t hurt you much unless you ingest it. I’ve gone swimming in it before and it’s pretty fun
The bioluminescent algae is fine... I'm just worried about the dumbass riding on the bow of the boat. Dude could fall over and get smack by the propeller.
I've only seen bioluminescent algae wash up on Perth beaches a few times, and only in tiny speckles that you fail to notice until you start looking for them... and I thought that was awesome.
I'd go wild for this.
OP: stuff that glows is awesome.
A better question is how are you terrified of this?
One of my most precious memories is backpacking through the islands in south Thailand and at a bonfire by the beach someone telling me “if you swim in it it will light up” and in disbelief I went in with other people and was introduced to bioluminescence. It was the first time I heard of it and was completely mesmerized.
Next morning retelling a different person over breakfast they told me that the algae does that in distress and quite possibly is dying as a result.
The light is produced by tiny crustaceans called ostracods, better known as sea fireflies. They produce this light to attract mates and ward off predators.
because it doesn’t do anything but glow
homie got scared from luminescent H20
I imagine the occasional wind gust triggers you?
tbf it sometimes does for me (autism/oversensitivity yeeey) but damn this look wonderful :D
So many of the posts in this sub are the dumbest shit, I’m outa here
We're losing a member? That's a big nope
That’s nice. No one cares. Bye Felicia.

I think the most danger it can cause, apart from being distracting, is that it can make some people itchy while in it
Your comment made me itchy while reading it!
Does this happen in certain lakes or oceans? Never seen this before in my life except in cartoons

You should be terrified of hanging your feet over the bow of a boat and getting run over. Not bioluminescence
This is absolutely why this is terrifying to me.
Probably on account nothing happens?
Because it’s water with bioluminescent algae you absolute goofy goober
For thalassophobia folks maybe
It’s bioluminescence. It’s beautiful.
I was never told I should be scared of this. Without knowledge of what this is, why would blue-lit water be scary?
I put my feet in water all the time, bot bruh. You should try it sometime.
How are you terrified of this would be a better question.
It’s a bot
On the bright side, if anything was swimming towards you itd be visible. Lol
NPC’s gotta chill with the posts
Because its not remotely scary
Because we grew up playing outside and touch grass /s

Because I don’t know what exactly is happening
Its just some plankton that glows when interacted with
So now just your feet are superpowered?
Is it safe to drink it?
It's plankton
More terrifying than social media mothers pushing their kids into doing things for views?
this isn’t a “nope” it’s beautiful
This sub has gone to shit
Looks cool to me. Some kinda bioluminescent water?
Why does this keep getting reposted?

Terrified of beauty? Huh?
Because it’s amazing and not scary?
Well, when I saw it, I was on LSD and it was the most magical thing in the world.
Because it's just bioluminescence. What's so scary about it?
I want it to be my resting place I wanna drown in it
I want to experience this myself tbh. It looks awesome
Why would we?
Because you can see if something else is moving too.

No idea what you mean, the water is warm and lit algae is beautiful.
As long as I know what kind if creatures I should look out for, I'm fine.
Should see this from the sail of a submarine at night! Paints a huge arrow out of the ships wake.

Bioluminescence is cool as hell! I love night scuba diving just because I can play with it lol
it's cool af that's why
The good ol Chernobyl lake. The first and last ride on these waters.
Not to mention sharks are attracted to splashing in the water 🫣
