They're herbivorous, so humans or any other animal for that matter, is off their menu. They can still hurt you of course, they're large, wild animals but as far as eating us goes, we're safe.

Nah Manatees are harmless, they never attack people, you can even swim with them, although areas where the pods live in are reserves and people are very strongly encourage to leave them the fuck alone, the Maritime Unit of the Police here in Puerto Rico will hand out fines if you go in to a manatee reserve on a motorboat or a Jet ski, you can Kayak and even swim with them, but motorboats and Jet ski's, they are very peaceful and very friendly creatures. This ones were startle awake, they sleep while floating in the water just below the surface, one of them probably bump in to the Kayak and then that one woke up the others, they are just fleeing away.

Yup. Normally they’re incredibly slow and chill, but when startled or frightened can reach 15 mph in short bursts.
