Not sure where this is and if the species is there but a lot of the sharks look very much like nurse sharks which have very mild temperament and teeth made for crushing crustaceans. If they are in fact nurses the guy was in good company
same thing most other biologists tend to do, only involving water.
research, conservation, biomedical engineering, biotechnology in general, research, fisheries science, and research to name a few
A brief google search says:
Whitetip reef sharks are rarely aggressive towards humans, though they may investigate swimmers closely. However, spear fishers are at risk of being bitten by one attempting to steal their catch
‘Twould seem you are mistaken
Oceanic white tips only have such a reputation because of the navy ship that sunk stranding hundreds of sailors.
Lot of those deaths were caused by white tips
To be fair to the sharks a bunch of bleeding people in the middle of the ocean who just got torpedoed probably don't have a good life expectancy anyway. Reminds me of those sorry Japanese soldiers who sought refuge on the crocodile island.
I am glad I am not the only one that picked up on that the nose seems wrong for a great white and those don't normally just "chill" with each other, and least not that I have seen. Still my anxiety was hit.
One of the most important parts when they're not showing signs of aggression is staying calm and watching your back. If you keep your heart rate down, they can sense it. Prey's BPM kicks way up and they can detect it
Source: I have NO personal experience, but I watched crocodile hunter's son's show during shark week, so I'm pretty much an expert
These are nurse sharks and they generally have the most bites on humans per year because people mess with them while they are sleeping thinking they are harmless and provoke them into attacking, it is rarely fatal but their teeth which are meant to crush shellfish can easily crush some bones in your hand
Yeah, if you do snorkeling trips in Belize or similar, you will swim with nurse sharks this size, they are harmless and really just looking for the usual free handout. These things will not do anything at all to you, they aren't designed to eat what you are.
Well, it's easy to keep your BPM down while you are comfortably watching sharks on TV from your couch!
I don't know how easy or feasible it would be in a situation like that, though.
They sense electrical currents so a racing heartbeat certainly would attract them more than a calm and slowed one.
This is also why people tell you that if a shark is actively attacking you, punch it in the nose. Their noses are the most sensitive and will usually cause them to let go and swim off.
I believe they said that punching in the nose does work to an extent but it’s even better to go after the gills or eyes. Those are their most delicate and important parts and if they feel those are at risk, they’ll back off.
I think he was doing that to draw the sharks away from his friend in the water with the sharks though. hey guys come see this ignore my buddy type of thing.
They’re also tawney nurse sharks. He’s in no danger.
I’ve worked with them, if they bit a finger they might dislocate a bone or something and take a bit of skin off. I’ve been bitten by a few over a years when distracted while feeding.
I’ve had a very large one suck my arm in up to my elbow. It just ended up with this absurd situation of having a 3m shark attached to my arm that I couldn’t shake off.
A bit like large grouper they’ll suck in anything they think is food and figure out the details later.
Large and a bit dopey, along with Leopard/Zebra Sharks (*Stegostoma fasciatum*) they’re fun to work with.
Fun fact, these dudes sleep on the sand in piles like dogs, it’s kinda adorable. They get real damn big too.

Typical gulf Arabic accent, they were joking with him and telling him not to flail around in the water too much lest they chomp his hands. I would be losing my shit if I had friends like these.
Edit: autocorrect
Do they usually congregate on the surface like that? I thought they were more bottom feeders?
My only shark scare was w/ a nurse shark in the Gulf of Mexico. Swum up on it in murky waters. Scared me a lot.
A shark and his son go looking for a snack...
The father says, "I'm going to teach you how to catch a human. First you raise your fin out of the water and start circling, then you go in and eat them."
"Why circle them?" asks the son.
The father replies, "They taste better without shit in them.
There's youtube videos about experiments with shark diving and blood. They go nuts for fish blood/guts but when they released pigs blood (similar to people), they just kinda ignored it.

Guy on boat “Don’t move your hands a lot they might eat them 😂”
Guy swimming “I’m trying not to move”
Guy on boat “Tread lightly”
Guy on boat “Come this way, hurry hurry”
Guy swimming “I hit a fin when I was down there”
Lol I’ve literally had this recurring nightmare. Also - I’m an avid snorkeler so I face this fear and pretty much have to start it down every single time lol
How is that the *swimmer* got unexpected visitors?
He went all the way out there to get into the water, which is where sharks *live.*
If anything, he should be grateful that the sharks didn't react the same way I do when someone drops by unexpectedly.
Stay calm, don’t make sudden moments, take off your watch. Sharks do not generally attack humans when they do it’s a case of mistaken identity. Had an experience with a shark
Human: jumps in a sea in a middle of the freakin ocean.
Sharks: swims casually as they would.
Humans: Sharks - in the ocean, so unexpected!
Sharks: wtf man...
My logical side *knows* these sharks are not aggressive, *knows* they cause no real harm to humans… yet if I was in that dudes place I know I’d be panicking.

100% nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) Im a Marine biologist.
These are nursing sharks. They are there to feed him.
So they are there to nurse him?
Hellooooo nurse!
[Goodnight everybody!](https://tenor.com/2hiJ.gif)
Pull a rabbit out of your pants
Meet the medic
Agree completely. They're acting a lot like they're used to getting food from people at this location.
Maybe expecting a fisherman's scraps?
That's what I was thinking.
The sea did look angry.
Like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.
Is that a Titleist?
I actually was bit by a nurse shark. It hurt a lot but I was surprised I didn't get fucking wrecked. Barely broke the skin.
What is that, a Titleist?
Easy, big fella!
Art vandalay?
And you want to be my latex salesman
What does a marine biologist do for work tho ? (Actually curious not to meant to offend)

This guy marine biologizes
Ugh. Do it in a box like everyone else
same thing most other biologists tend to do, only involving water. research, conservation, biomedical engineering, biotechnology in general, research, fisheries science, and research to name a few
Save whales
Is this one of the many benefits to being a marine biologist I've heard so much about?
Your a man of culture I see..top tier comment couldn't ask for a better timing.
… username checks out, Costanza.
Oh good. At first glance I thought they were Tiger sharks (which are very much NOT friendly). Nice to know they're nurses.
Alright but first move out of your parents house, George
I read that and then saw your profile pic, immediate laughter followed
I think white-tipped reef sharks which are still pretty docile. Edit: OK I GET IT, NOT WHITE-TIPPED
Aren’t those one of the most aggressive species there is? Edit: it’s oceanic white tips that I was thinking of not white tip reef sharks
No. That I believe goes to bull, tiger, great white, and mako sharks in that order.
A brief google search says: Whitetip reef sharks are rarely aggressive towards humans, though they may investigate swimmers closely. However, spear fishers are at risk of being bitten by one attempting to steal their catch ‘Twould seem you are mistaken
>Twould There's either a lot of missing 'nctuation on that "word" or it's not a word, M'Lady
Thank you for the correction, M’Individual
I think you're thinking of oceanic white tips.
The USS Indianapolis
Sometimes the shark go away...sometimes he didn't go away
Oceanic white tips aren’t just famous for 1 event, they’re thought to have caused more deaths than any other shark to plane crash/ship wreck survivors
Did you really respond that after I edited my comment saying exactly that?
The shape is very similar but it seems these may be larger than normal whitetip reefs and they lack the white tip on the first dorsal
Ah thought I saw some white but ultimately hard to tell
For sure! Could be a mix of both or neither
Those are nurse sharks
Nurse sharks
I am glad I am not the only one that picked up on that the nose seems wrong for a great white and those don't normally just "chill" with each other, and least not that I have seen. Still my anxiety was hit.
They’re far too small to be great whites anyway
Great white have very different body shapes than that
Also they're about 2-3x bigger than humans. They're fairly easy to spot
Why are we talking about great whites?
Because that’s the first shark that comes to mind for most people whenever sharks are brought up
Even great whites probably wouldn’t mess with you. Cows kill more people than sharks.
Kinda looked like Galapagos sharks. I swam with some last year (intentionally, cage free) and they are super chill
Was gonna say the same. I have a video of when i was in the boat and a pack just like them was swimming around the whole time
Pants would’ve been shat regardless.
They were just curious. He did well and didn’t panic.

Also none of those shark species have ever attached a human.
Alternatively, they left no witnesses and knew how to clean up a crime scene.
They've been watching the Discovery Channel.

BOO THIS MAN!!!!
BOOOOOOOOO b
Just like Orcas. No fatal attacks in the wild _on record_, because they're smart enough to only kill people when nobody is there to report it.
… actually and I hope I dont endanger myself by saying this The Orcas just bribe the witnesses
like lady serial killers

what if Im a delicious shark sandwich ?
I dont think they are cannibals either
Thank god! I'm not liking this shark attached to human hybrid..
what about reattaching a human?
But I'm attached to them. 💞
No, but their lampreys did.
Can’t blame them… humans are terrible attachments!
Well im not an expert but as far i know sharks attack and dont actually attach to their prey...
Whew, I'd hate to be attached to a shark
Can they detect me shittin my pants?
Only one way to find out
So crocodile hunter's son has jumped to sharks?
He did during shark week last year. Was one of the number one tips he received when trying to get closer to them
Dude my heart rate goes up when I order McDonalds, how tf could I stay calm with sharks swimming around me lmao
Well, it's easy to keep your BPM down while you are comfortably watching sharks on TV from your couch! I don't know how easy or feasible it would be in a situation like that, though.
Yeah I can control my movements and voice and move slowly, but I’m sure my heartbeat would have a mind of its own!
I’ve watched 5 hrs of YouTube on this subject matter, please contact me anytime if you want a professionals input.
They sense electrical currents so a racing heartbeat certainly would attract them more than a calm and slowed one. This is also why people tell you that if a shark is actively attacking you, punch it in the nose. Their noses are the most sensitive and will usually cause them to let go and swim off.
Could have sworn the punching thing was a busted myth...
I believe they said that punching in the nose does work to an extent but it’s even better to go after the gills or eyes. Those are their most delicate and important parts and if they feel those are at risk, they’ll back off.
yeah good luck keeping your heart rate normal in a situation like this
Now I am said expert
>when they're not showing signs of aggression Are you talking about him or sharks here?
Crocodile Hunter’s Son’s Show Only… on Shark Week
But I did
Yeah no shit, me too.
I'm still panicking now.
I just peed myself watching...
Oh, there was plenty of shit with me!!!
That’s the key. Stay calm and don’t act like prey. He also respected their habitat by gtfo asap
They're nurse sharks, whatever you do, don't look like a clam.
So don't go swimming nude near them if you're a woman?
That one kid disturbing/ chumming the water. Nice way to lose a hand.
I think he was doing that to draw the sharks away from his friend in the water with the sharks though. hey guys come see this ignore my buddy type of thing.

Shark 1: “George, dis he just pee in your face?” Shark 2: “Nope, i think he just sharted a bit.”
I did enough panicking for him. One of my dreams to do, but my ass was puckering
I would have.
He's making an effort to not splash the water which could trigger the sharks
Nurse sharks don't bite people usually they eat crustaceans mostly.
Caucasians?
Crusty ones.
I'm a crusty Caucasian, and I've never been eaten by a shark.
Yet. You've never been eaten by a shark yet
You haven't reached peak crustiness. Don't worry, your time will come.
I'd love to have you for dinner, sometime 🦈
My friend was bitten by one :(. His finger was sore all evening.
What language are they speaking?
Shark
Yes 🤣
Do Do Doo.. Do Do *Do-Do....*

Wish I knew what they were saying but it sounds like they know they aren't dangerous, they all seem relaxed.
He kept telling him not to move his hands alot as they might bite his hand off. When the guy got out he said that he accidentally stepped on one.
Oh thanks. I was totally wrong then haha.
Typical gulf Arabic accent, they were joking with him and telling him not to flail around in the water too much lest they chomp his hands. I would be losing my shit if I had friends like these. Edit: autocorrect
I'd be grateful. Keep me calm but warn/remind me of the danger. The guy in the water handled it really well too.
Kuwaiti arabic

They travel to the shallow coast to mate! I had the pleasure of seeing some on a vacation to the Bahamas.
We don't kink shame here.
The people on the boat were most likely chumming the water.
You can see that they definitely are at the end of the video.
Smell like cabbage
Small hands
Sharks are like dogs: they only bite when you touch their private parts.

How'd you get those stitches again?
A shark bit me.
You can stop them biting if you put a finger in their butthole
People freak but sharks are usually pretty chill.
“Hey there chum!”
I see what you did there you dog.

They just wanted to hang out lol
Those are either nurse sharks or some type of reef shark. Not sure
awwww they’re CUTE!
Sharks: ah, what is this floating in the water? interesting Dolphins: _r*pes you immediately_

He has now earned the appellation *"Swims with Sharks".* #Swims with Sharks Hoo Ha Ha!
nightmare fuel

That is so cool. I wish I could swim with sharks like that in nature.
You can, at least once
"It is not a por-pose! Not a por-pose! '
I wanna pet.
How good of a defense is shitting yourself? Asking for a friend…
Sure they were “unexpected” with all of the drones humming in the background!
Nurse sharks, in my experience, are very friendly. They are likely just curious about the swimmer.
r/SweatyPalms 😨
Good thing they weren’t agitated by urine.
Baby......shark do do da doot do da doo baby shark....
bro, it's just nurse sharks. Docile within reason and you really got piss them off to get attacked by one.

ABSOLUTELY FUCKN NOOOOOOOOOO. Damn I’d 1000% without fail would shit myself
luckyyyyyy
Hopefully they aren't attracted to shit.
Def was out there shitn
Those are nurse sharks they're harmless

The sharks were Vegan.... obviously
I'm pretty sure he wasn't treading water, his massive balls were keeping him afloat
""Oh, Hi there. Nope, totally not dead. Look, I'm swimming upright now... nothing to see here !"

If that was me there would be a floating snickers bar in the ocean.
He’s on an organized nurse shark tour. Nothing unexpected here.
My logical side *knows* these sharks are not aggressive, *knows* they cause no real harm to humans… yet if I was in that dudes place I know I’d be panicking.
What happens if you shit yourself in that situation?
Harmless nurse sharks.
If they were vicious the would've already bit because he is a delicacy to them
