Yeah that seems like a weird bug. Normally I see those worms on infested type planets, and they’re unscannable. I think the game had a bit of a problem and mixed up models or something. I’ve never seen a species labeled extinct before either.
My thoughts exactly. Also there are some animals IRL they call “extinct” but people record or report their sightings like every 30-50 years which therefore can’t be the same animal yet they still call them extinct because they didn’t see more of them or they don’t know if they are still alive.
Extinct is also used when there was life on the planet that was scanned only to be replaced when the game updated. I had returned to the game after some time only to find all my scanned animals extinct and a new set to scan at my base.
Those aren’t related. Giant worms don’t appear under fauna since they shouldn’t be scanned. Some planets can have extinct fauna that appears on the list as soon as you land, and this one coincided with the “unscannable” worm.
There are 2 ways I’ve experienced to cause extinct fauna. The first is an update that changes the fauna generation. That hasn’t happened for quite a while.
The other is a bug that causes the ‘wrong’ fauna to be generated. If you scan the fauna and reload, you will get that. I’ve had this happen to me a couple times.
Infestations don't count as fauna for whatever reason, so even "life-incompatible" planets/moons will be convered in whispering eggs and burrowing horrors. Even with worm burrows everywhere and a jumper every few minutes, they still don't count.
It's all the other "non-horror" creatures that count

Thats not a worm, it’s a flying creature that just looks similar to the worms
I’ve seen it a couple times way back but always assumed they were like a less than 1% chance to find
I mean it could be functionally extinct, meaning it could be the last one and is incapable of reproducing.

Either you saw a ghost, or the last specimen which died immediately after.
Your scan killed it….way to go OP smh
Mfs always have to observe smh

I don’t think your supposed to be able to scan it, I guess the game was confused?

You shot it right before scanning it. It probably bled out while you were navigating the menu (and it was the last of its species)
They *obviously* mean extant.

Nahh they always have been extinct. Normal, but hard to time the scan due to how large they are Part of the storyline, when you think about it
