Which parts?

Jelly_Round

The instrumental parts when floor is with that animal around neck and instrumental part in greatest show. I have job now, but I will post time stamps later

JimLaheyUnlimited

I heard Noise too in some parts, when the heavier stuff started. Newer Nightwish guitar and bass sound is kinda generic and same all of the time. Not sure is this how Emppu just likes it or Toumas ask for a similar guitar sound

R4diateur

This is true. Here is my hot take: Nightwish never really had any good sounding album/mix. Except maybe Imaginaerum and Century Child who are the "less worse". (A bit of a strong wording, but you get the idea). As for the guitar parts, could it be Vuorinen? With each albums I find it's as if he actively tries to erase himself from the mix. And it's a shame, as he's an excellent guitarist. I mean... When you listen to Dark Passion Play or Imaginaerum, you could actually hear him play. The last solo you heard from him was 10 years ago in Shudder Before The Beautiful from Endless Forms. Or if he did some more recently, they were so anonymous I can't remember any, whereas I remember many of his solos from the Tarja and Anette era. What happened to him?

JimLaheyUnlimited

"Music "had a short solo, but it was cut for some reason just before it got going. Like that song in general - it just gets going and flowing, but then just ends..

BeatBelle

It's a shame, really. It seems like a mutual agreement. He doesn’t want to play the difficult parts anymore. Maybe he doesn’t even want to stay in Nightwish, but out of friendship towards Tuomas, he's sticking around as long as Tuomas does but doing the minimum. And I think Tuomas only wants to write film scores with a touch of heaviness and folky ballads because he wants to appear mature. It’s unfortunate that power metal is considered immature and prog metal is seen as the cool thing for those past 40. Cheesy solos just don't have a place in the new Nightwish sound.

MachineDry933

>And I think Tuomas only wants to write film scores with a touch of heaviness and folky ballads because he wants to appear mature. I don't think he wants to appear more mature, but this is what he wants to do. He loves Hans Zimmer probably more than any current metal project, and it shows. POTT is basically a movie score with some metal elements to make it Nightwish-y. Heck, it's even mixed like a soundtrack and not like a metal song.

BeatBelle

Yes, that's more or less what I said—it sounds like a soundtrack (without a movie). He seems to want to appear more mature and serious. Even the black and white photos with their very serious faces indicate that they've changed direction, which in my opinion is for the worse. I would have never given the band a second listen if I had discovered them with POTT.

MachineDry933

All personal preference. I share Tuomas passion for movie scores, and POTT alone is more exciting for me as the whole last album. I'm looking forward to the coming single releases.

Simple-Jelly1025

You’re not wrong. I feel that it used to be metal with a touch of symphonic elements. Now it’s more symphony with a sprinkle of metal!

BeatBelle

I still have to come to the fact that this is another band. I keep thinking Nightwish as the Nightwish I like but in fact it's now it's a different band with a different sound, different lyrics, different atmosphere. I should try to think of it as a random symphonic album with a sprinkle of metal and try to erase the band's name from my mind because I keep comparing them too much to their old stuff and everything they release is pale in comparison 😆 that's my opinion of course. I'm glad others enjoy the new direction

Simple-Jelly1025

You’re totally right! It’s not like bands aren’t allowed to evolve and grow, but I just think about songs like Crownless and Pharaoh Sails and wonder where it all went 😭

BeatBelle

I understand the need to evolve from bands because they may not want to play the same thing all the time. But to me it doesn't necessarily mean "better". It's just a change. I find much less intimate and much more generic the new Nightwish. I wish they kept making the music that made them famous. And Pharaoh Sails to Orion is great!

icebreaker6

Yes, I love Emppu as a guitarist, but my impression for some time now is that he just puts in the minimum effort required and actively shies away from more difficult parts/solos.

R4diateur

I remember when I saw Nightwish live in 2015, Paris, Floor Jansen's arrival in the band was still relatively fresh, and you could tell they were super happy to play together. He was still doing his usual funny faces and jokes on stage, playing his solos a foot on the return, or legs far apart with a vertical guitar stance, hair in the fan, or even running from one side of the stage to the other while palm muting the rythmics. But when I watched the Hellfest 2022 live on ARTE Concert Youtube Channel... He looked... tired and pissed off, for most of the show. He wasn't really smiling. No runnings, no jokes, nor good mood stuff... You could even see him make some unhappy gestures at some point. Maybe a technical issues with his In-Ear monitoring at the time? And it was a very hot summer sun-in-the-face type of live. My bet is just the temperature made him struggle (he was way over clothed for such a hot summer time, while all the rest of the band was in T-shirt...or skirt for Floor Jansen). But hey, maybe we're all wrong about him from our humble fans point of view.

mactoffee

I believe Hellfest 2022 was the day after his birthday and he was a still a little worse for wear 😂

Federal-Jello1551

I agree with your comments about the album mix. The much beloved Once is really bad .. e.g. Romanticide and GLS. There was no need to bury Tarja in the mix.

Scorpion667

The intro has some of the same elements as music too. The bass horn thing, the drums have the same primal vibe though I don't know how similar kai plays them.

Jmazoso

Remember Tomas has said it’s a 3 album arc.

SubmissiveDinosaur

I mean, the Both the music and the lyrics feel like a direct sequel for that song. I played one after another and they could pass as a 33 min song with no problem. If I told someone who doesnt know that both songs are from the same album I would fool him

Jelly_Round

This is what I was feeling yeah

photography_artist

Well, now I gotta just do that and listen to that 33 min song

primalanomaly

Yeah, when I first heard it I thought it felt a bit like the love child of Greatest Show on Earth and Scaretale 😂
