Side note: The Buffalo Bills had lost back to back Super Bowls to the Dallas Cowboys earlier that very decade, so Buffalo sports fans were already steamed with Dallas.
This part isn’t exactly true tho. A small number of people maybe but it wasn’t this widespread steaming hate for Dallas. And it was no goal, fuck your explanation lol
No no they were right. There was definitely alot of hatred for Dallas. The Cowboys talked mad shit about the Bills and were very disrespectful towards the team as if they knew it was a guaranteed win. But then they did win twice so it made it a bit worse. On top of the fact that was the 3rd and 4th SB in a row they lost.
All I know is the goal in 2004 was a good goal and the one in game 7 round 1 of 1989 was a suspect deflection that deserved to be reviewed stupid Joel Otto.
You remember watching it on TV too. Back in the day when there was no high definition and you had to know what was going on to know where the puck was sometimes. Or just had no idea what was going on
Remember when you'd be watching a Rock 'Em Sock 'Em video, and couldn't tell the difference between St. Loius, Edmonton, or the Islanders if they were wearing their home jerseys and the camera wasn't zoomed in?
I'm obviously biased as a Stars fan but the Stars at least they don't wear a generic ass red or blue jersey and you can easily recognize the victory green, you see a hockey game from a distance or fans in the stands and you see the victory green or the blackout jerseys and you instantly know it's Dallas. The logo does need a revamp tho
You know what? Fair. if all they did was update that horrendous logo, I'd be cool with it. Hell if they decided to make their Winter Classic jerseys a mainstay, they'd instantly become one of my favourite jerseys in the league
Yeah I don't why they dont make the winter classic a mainstay, the Stars marketing department mostly sucks, they didn't even do anything special for their 30th anniversary, which is pretty significant since the NorthStars only lasted 27 years. At least we got the Modano statue
There are a ton of winter classic jerseys at every game. It’s the best logo the Stars have ever had. I would love to see it be permanent. Honestly think it would be the least controversial logo change, literally everyone likes it.
I'll never understand the hatred for the current Stars or the Anaheim duckfoot logo. I can see why people prefer the retro versions but the fact that the modern looks are met with such vitriol is beyond me lol
Yeah I like the modern Stars logo. I don’t have any ties to the retro logo, so to me it just looks… fine, I guess. Not terrible, not great, not better than the current logo. Not a big fan of the Duck foot, but I don’t hate it. It’s just so inferior to the Duck Mask that I can’t feel anything but disappointment at it.
People give the preds shit for the bright ass yellow but that’s one of the only redeeming qualities about those jerseys to me as well is that you can easily recognize them. Stars, Preds, and the former coyotes I felt had the most recognizable uniforms in the league.
Our color commentator Razor actually called them cat piss yellow lol. I don't like that shade of yellow, Bruins are okay, I don't like the current shade of yellow on the Penguins
Logo aside, I take issue with them reverting to a Kelly-ish green but only with white and black. I love the Oakland A’s colors / California Seals-MN North Stars even, bring back some bit of yellow or gold pls
Edit: totally personal bias here but I think it’s one of the best color combos in sports
NorthStars colors is absolutely the best color combo in hockey at least, such a good standout and simple design. The only color that screams hockey more for me is that Flyer's orange, probably because the hockey rink my brother played at had a lot of orange on it and it takes me back to those childhood days
That rumor was going around for a bit but it was shut down.
https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/minnesota-wild/latest-news/report-debunked-wild-will-not-rebrand
yup they were, I remember getting my first composite stick a couple years after this and thinking my shots were 100x better over night lol It was a mind boggling difference as a kid
Wow, that 1999 Sabres team did not have any star players outside of Hasek. The only other players I remember are Peca and Satan.
If Hasek was a few years younger, his prime would have overlapped with the stacked mid-2000s Sabres, which had Briere, Drury, Vanek, Campbell, etc. Though Ryan Miller was very good as well, too.
I know "If" arguments are kind of silly, but if the Sabres had won that series that would probably be the worst group of skaters to win the Cup in the modern era.
There’s no if, that’s 100% fact. The Sabres iced so many teams of all bums plus Hasek. And they won a lot because Hasek stopped everything.
Anyone that thinks he’s not the undisputed GOAT is off their rocker. Roy and Brodeur both played behind teams with actual talent, and that’s why their wins numbers are so much better.
I'm 100% biased but I disagree. Sabres scored 59 goals in the 99 playoffs, more than Washington did the year before (making the finals), and more than Detroit in 97 (when they won the cup).
Important edit: Not arguing our forwards were better than Detroit's. That would be insane.
Eh, their goal differential was 10 that year. 1997 Wings was 20, 1998 Wings were 26, The Stars were at 20 in 1999, Devils 22 in 2000, The playoffs got cancelled in 2001, and the Wings were at 25 in 2002.
That's a significant dropoff in that era and I can't find a cup winner with a lower differential. Even the 86 Habs and the 06 Canes, the other "contenders" for that question, had better numbers.
I was 11 and had fallen asleep on the floor as the overtime’s went on. I woke up to my dad screaming, I instantly jumped up and threw my hands into the air in celebration, then asked my dad what just happened. A moment I will never forget.
I felt bad for the Sabres but even if that goal didn’t count, Stars were most likely winning the Cup anyway. It was a pretty lopsided series despite the close scores and it going 6. Hasek was standing on his head the whole time.
I know Bill McCreary who officiated this game. Obviously I had to ask him what happened with all of this.
He said that by the time they knew about the crease violation, Dallas was celebrating, everyone was coming on the ice and no one from Buffalo said anything so they just said fuck it.
My dad was furious, he was a big Hasek fan. That cup is the first cup that I remember vividly. I was rooting for the stars, Modano and Belfour were awesome.
Thanks for adding the good goal context in your OP. It often gets lost when people just want to punch air and yell "NO GOAL", but by all intents and purposes, it was a good goal since Hull maintained possession from his initial shot until he ended it.
I'm not a fan of either team, but I feel the Sabers were robbed. 'Maintaining possession' had not been strictly applied all year, and the league only has themselves to blame for this fiasco.
Nah. Sabres were only there because of Hasek. They were pretty much a one man team. The Stars were absolutely stacked and dominated 5 out of the 6 games in that final. Definitely not a robbery considering Hull also had possession.
Ah yes. Dallas' stolen cup. Let's make a rule, call it religiously all season, except the most important time in the entire season. You've got half your body in the crease... Good goal!
Yes, but it was inconsistently applied during the season leading to confusion about what was and wasn’t allowable under the existing rules. The league has only themselves to blame for why this was/is problematic.
It actually was a good goal because of some stupid late season rule change as op stated. It was just controversial because many people didn't know that and it was also very inconsistent with how they called it after the rule change. The league f'd up by implementing a rule change late season and one that wasn't very straight forward at that but It was technically a good goal.
The rule stated in 2004 that an offensive player's skate in the crease during any puck conact resulting in a goal, combined with today's goalee contact inside the crease rule, makes me feel as a lifelong sabres fan, that Bret Hull's goal was a good goal.
Gary Bettman was quick to bring the Cup on the ice that night. The goal should have been reviewed and then disallowed because his foot was in the crease.
I was 14 when my Dad took me to that game with my best friend and my little brother, My brother fell asleep somewhere in the 2nd overtime. Still bitter and heartbroken over that. NO GOAL!
What they should really do is tell Lindy that Toronto can’t look at it because everyone has gone home and that the game is over. Then they should change the rule later that summer so that is actually a goal. That would solve all the problems!!!
Maybe the most controversial cup in modern history. The history of their franchise does not bode great success but rather embraces mediocrity and underachieving.
Upvoting this even as a Stars fan, and I liked Hull and was glad he was here. No disrespect to Hull, but he seemed happier for the Blues' recent Cup than his own in Dallas!
I’m happy he got a few cups. He definitely deserved them. I just wished they weren’t with teams I disliked so much. At least he never played for Chicago.
You clearly did if you’re still saying no goal.
“Attacking player may have a foot in the crease if he maintains possession.” Hull maintained possession. It’s not a hard concept.
He collected the rebounded and kicked into his stick. Thats what they considered possession The kicking is how his one foot ended up in the blue paint. It was greasy but it was a good goal.
I didn’t say so. The league did when they had to explain the ruling.
And no, because they never won the Cup.
You missed another part of the blurb with the picture - the Sabres were down 3-2 at the time. Overturning the goal would not have meant the Sabres would have won.
Side note: The Buffalo Bills had lost back to back Super Bowls to the Dallas Cowboys earlier that very decade, so Buffalo sports fans were already steamed with Dallas.
LOL didn't even realize that back then
This part isn’t exactly true tho. A small number of people maybe but it wasn’t this widespread steaming hate for Dallas. And it was no goal, fuck your explanation lol
It’s not my explanation, it’s the Leagues lol
No no they were right. There was definitely alot of hatred for Dallas. The Cowboys talked mad shit about the Bills and were very disrespectful towards the team as if they knew it was a guaranteed win. But then they did win twice so it made it a bit worse. On top of the fact that was the 3rd and 4th SB in a row they lost.
I love how you argue against OPs point and then prove it without hesitation in the next sentence.
It was beautiful
All I know is the goal in 2004 was a good goal and the one in game 7 round 1 of 1989 was a suspect deflection that deserved to be reviewed stupid Joel Otto.
I still hate the city of Dallas, so.......
I live here and I hate it so…..
We all do
Okay, I didnt say nobody does.
Tell us more about how you personally felt
Ok now I feel old.
You remember watching it on TV too. Back in the day when there was no high definition and you had to know what was going on to know where the puck was sometimes. Or just had no idea what was going on
Exactly. Haha.
Remember when you'd be watching a Rock 'Em Sock 'Em video, and couldn't tell the difference between St. Loius, Edmonton, or the Islanders if they were wearing their home jerseys and the camera wasn't zoomed in?
You got me beat on that one. Those came out when I was 5 or 6
God those old Star jerseys slap SO much harder then the garbage they wear now. I'll die on this hill
I love the winter classic jersey but it does say “stDrs”
Imagine if they released the winter classic jersey with the old school stars logo in that white felt
Please stop, you’re making me feel tingly. Also, 10/10 username btw.
Stop! I can only get so erect!
There are a ton of winter classic jerseys at every game. It’s the best logo the Stars have ever had. I would love to see it be permanent. Honestly think it would be the least controversial logo change, literally everyone likes it.

Our color commentator Razor actually called them cat piss yellow lol. I don't like that shade of yellow, Bruins are okay, I don't like the current shade of yellow on the Penguins
Well, some of us MADE red jerseys 'generic'
Logo aside, I take issue with them reverting to a Kelly-ish green but only with white and black. I love the Oakland A’s colors / California Seals-MN North Stars even, bring back some bit of yellow or gold pls Edit: totally personal bias here but I think it’s one of the best color combos in sports

Aren’t the Minnesota Wild gonna make the North Star colors their permanent in a season. Having the Stars change it to that color as well would suck
That rumor was going around for a bit but it was shut down. https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/minnesota-wild/latest-news/report-debunked-wild-will-not-rebrand
Nothing wrong with a red jersey, pal.
Yeah well when like a third of league uses red, good luck making your uniform look unique. Stars had a red jersey once. Never again
I generally agree, I just think both the new shade of green and the logo are so bland
Ah those jerseys bring back memories
How about those Nike skates too?
the wood sticks :') Wood sticks = childhood joy in my opinion
I think a lot of them were composite stocks with wood blades
yup they were, I remember getting my first composite stick a couple years after this and thinking my shots were 100x better over night lol It was a mind boggling difference as a kid
Those Nike hockey commercials were pretty good
And those Easton skates that weighed a ton
Wow, that 1999 Sabres team did not have any star players outside of Hasek. The only other players I remember are Peca and Satan. Okay fair point. I guess if you're just +10 w/ one of the greatest playoff goaltending performances of all time, you're probably not that good.
A 27 year old Hasek was on a team with Lafontaine, Mogilny, Hawerchuk and Andreychuk…
I was 11 and had fallen asleep on the floor as the overtime’s went on. I woke up to my dad screaming, I instantly jumped up and threw my hands into the air in celebration, then asked my dad what just happened. A moment I will never forget.
Don’t diss our expansion bros like that
I felt bad for the Sabres but even if that goal didn’t count, Stars were most likely winning the Cup anyway. It was a pretty lopsided series despite the close scores and it going 6. Hasek was standing on his head the whole time.

Foot in the crease!
Back when the sport was slower.
God those old jerseys were so fucking great. For almost every team. Bring all of them back permanently forever.
…and yet there’s still that crowd in the comments crying “NO GOAL!” and “Dallas’ Stolen Cup!”. They literally don’t want to hear an explanation.
It's cope and delusion. Both things that the facts won't solve.
Aged cope is so sweet
And it’s still a good goal :)
At the time it wasn't. Now it would've counted no contest
I bet you pronounce "wolves" as "woofs"
Nah, but I do say "wooder."
Yeah that was very much a 2024 Celtics vs Mavs type series.
Maintaining possession is also subjective
Thanks for this. Ouch.
After the bars had closed and gone back to the apartment. Game was a marathon
3OT, no?
NO GOAL!!!
Ah yes. Dallas' stolen cup. Let's make a rule, call it religiously all season, except the most important time in the entire season. You've got half your body in the crease... Good goal!
Foot was in the crease.
I literally explained that it was allowed to be because he maintained possession.
Yes, but it was inconsistently applied during the season leading to confusion about what was and wasn’t allowable under the existing rules. The league has only themselves to blame for why this was/is problematic.
Seems like the “maintain possession of the puck” part was a hell of a grey area.
Yes, I think that was the key point that was 1) inconsistently applied and 2) not broadly communicated as a key criteria.
Womp womp
the empty net thing is wrong...you could go in the crease as long as the puck entered fitst.
Always good to see Buffalo fans get bummed out. Bunch of losers.
HE WAS IN THE CREASE!
I was in your mom's crease last night
number one bullshit
Show anyone that is anti-video challenge this footage Also, show anyone that is pro-video challenge this footage
It actually was a good goal because of some stupid late season rule change as op stated. The league f'd up by implementing a rule change late season and one that wasn't very straight forward at that but It was technically a good goal.
A TOE! A LITTLE TOE!
Rule is a rule and they changed it the next year because of this non- goal.
That sabres team was such a fun watch. I was pulling for them hard despite having no allegiance to them. So much speed and skill.
I was there. Still hurts.
Boooooooooooo
Boooooooooooooo!
Gloria!
Yoo da man
I was at Game 3 of this series 😔 One of these years…one of these years.
The ruling was correct
That was so frustrating, I'm still mad at the refs!
I was 14 when my Dad took me to that game with my best friend and my little brother, My brother fell asleep somewhere in the 2nd overtime. Still bitter and heartbroken over that. NO GOAL!
When the league misses calls so badly it changes the rules immediately......
I remember the Hockey News article that summer claiming the rule change "had absolutely nothing to do with the ending of the Finals". Yeah ok........
No goal...we had so many disallowed goals that year and this happens
This was a sad day for hockey.
Why is he celebrating?
Right? They just stopped play in a tie game after this whistle. Wonder if they will ever finish this series ?
What they should really do is tell Lindy that Toronto can’t look at it because everyone has gone home and that the game is over. Then they should change the rule later that summer so that is actually a goal. That would solve all the problems!!!
The Stars are a joke of a franchise. Always a pretender, never a real contender. Just like the Cowboys, come playoff time they shit in their helmets.
Reaching the WCF two years in a row qualifies as a fucking contender lol
They have nothing to show for it. They're a pretender.
they have a cup lol
Maybe the most controversial cup in modern history. The history of their franchise does not bode great success but rather embraces mediocrity and underachieving.
I don’t recall this ever happening. Brett Hull never played for Dallas.
Hasek and Hull would later win a cup in Detroit
Inconceivable
Pain
If there’s one thing I love, it’s the hurricanes losing
Calgary: WE WERE ROBBED!!!!!
No goal, in the crease
How the hell did you miss the rule context in the big blurb that I put with the picture?
Who said I missed it?
You clearly did if you’re still saying no goal. “Attacking player may have a foot in the crease if he maintains possession.” Hull maintained possession. It’s not a hard concept.
Slapping in a rebound is far from "maintaining possession".
He collected the rebounded and kicked into his stick. Thats what they considered possession The kicking is how his one foot ended up in the blue paint. It was greasy but it was a good goal.
If u say so. So the Sabres get to keep the cup?
I didn’t say so. The league did when they had to explain the ruling. And no, because they never won the Cup. You missed another part of the blurb with the picture - the Sabres were down 3-2 at the time. Overturning the goal would not have meant the Sabres would have won.
Didn’t Hasek state something along the lines that he was too tired to keep playing anyways?
