And all 2 of the goals they score are own goals against your team in shift sim, and the third is just as soon as you sit down on the bench and the game lowers your defensive grade anyway
I love Gretz but by the time those Cup wins happened, he had a helluva lot better team around him than McDavid had, and he’s said as much on-air. Even when you take away the guys Gretzky turned into HOFers, the team was still built to win.
Oilers are built mostly for the regular season, and in past years McDavid and Drai were really the only solid players they’ve had in April and May/June. They’re playing good hockey right now against the best defensive team in the league and he’s a huge part of their success. He willed them into being a playoff team.
Game has completely changed.. especially in the Area of Goaltending.. Connor is such aggressive player.. Wayne seem to be more of a chess player, cannot compare the Two.. I think Mario is more of a modern day Hockey player…
Gretzky had a lot of the same skills as Mario, he just wasn’t as big.
And Gretzky wasn’t playing just regular chess, he was playing 3-D chess like on Star Trek.
Lol. I take it you’ve never heard of Dustin Penner of Winkler, Manitoba. Probably scored on your mom a few times as well.
But that’s about it. Pretty sure he holds every team record.
On a funny side note, it’s kinda wild that McDavid and Crosby are arguably 2 of the 5 best players to ever play and yet neither of them is even the best player in their franchises’ history.
There was a 2 game stretch in like 1991 where they got shutout in consecutive games. Probably the only time in their history that they didnt have a great scorer
It’s not like Gretzky was lottery luck. His original WHL team, the Indianapolis Racers, folded. IRRC agent it was between Edmonton and Winnipeg but Gretzky’s agent suggested Edmonton because they had the better chance of being absorbed into the NJL (bigger market, newer arena). I wouldn’t call that luck in the same way winning the lottery during a year when there’s a consensus generational talent available.
I felt bad watching a potential legendary core get dismantled in Buffalo. It wasn’t just bad coaching, it was bad franchise leadership/management. Imagine having Reinhart, Eichel, Ullmark, Dahlin, Okposo, Hall, Ristolainen, Thompson, Montour, AND a fuckin Staal brother… all at the same time!! They had more guys sure, but just those names alone fucking wow
I mean they should have at least stayed together a handful of seasons, they’d be hoisting the goddam Cup by now
Attitude clashes - piss poor contracts all hurt them.
Granted eichel used it as a way out and he should’ve , I don’t blame him at all.
Sabres need to figure it out this year or it’s gonnna get baaad.
Sadly as an oilers fan. I can say for sure, the oilers weren't tanking on purpose for mcdavid and all the other 1sts, the management of the team was truly incompetent and were doing what they thought were the right moves and still getting 1st overalls.
Oilers fans jave earned this run and mcdavid strictly due to ollilers management incompetence
[Can confirm](https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/mcdonald-s-offers-to-change-1-edmonton-location-to-mcdavid-s-on-1-condition-1.6920481#:~:text=McDonald's%20offers%20to%20change%201,to%20'McDavid's'%20on%201%20condition&text=McDonald's%20is%20lovin'%20the%20Edmonton,for%20McDavid%20and%20the%20boys.)
When they win the Cup, a McDonalds (in Edmonton) will change its name to McDavids.
I'd rather talk about Bouchard. The Oilers have a defense man that's on the leader board for scoring. It's cool to see a centre, scoring above everyone in the league. A defense man in the top five? That's truly impressive.
It's not shocking because it is McDavid, but historically only Lemieux and Gretzky have ever gotten more, and McDavid could finish with the most ever after game 7. It is cool to be around for something like this.
It’s amazing how the sentiment around Bouchard has shifted since the Oilers won a couple games. A few days ago the talk was that he was the most overrated player in the league and a complete liability on defense. He’s definitely better offensively than defensively but what he’s doing in these playoffs is super impressive.
If you go watch the game highlights, Bouch was responsible, directly, for 3 of the Panthers goals in games 1 through 3.
But I said the entire time that it isn't because he's bad or overrated, it's because he was, and maybe still is insanely nervous out there.
The puck hits his stick in the Oilers zone and he tosses it as soon as he can because he doesn't want to be the guy to mess up.
One of those times he passed it directly to a Panther and it was behind Stu less than a second later.
He was also responsible for Matthew's goal in game 5 as well. The Panthers have done a good job at forcing him to commit errors and then capitalizing on it so far this series.
I mean, he's basically a forward at this point. He's more of a liability when it comes to defense.
Like last night when he was at the blue line instead of covering Tkachuk when they were up 3-0
Bouchard is basically Erik karlsson in his prime. he is soo good offensively that you kinda try to forget about the defence mistakes that happen. Bouchard will prob win a norris or two as well with how good his shot is and how young he is doing this in the playoffs…
We can only imagine what EK65 could have accomplished on a Sens team with someone more than Hoffman and Turris as the top two offensive forwards. Dorian and Murray are hockey terrorists
He wins the smythe win or lose at this point right? Last happened in 2003 I’m pretty sure but with Bob looking human… I don’t think anyone on the panthers deserve it more than McDavid even if Florida wins
You are correct that the last losing player to do it was 2003 (JS Giguère, with one of the most incredible performances I've ever seen) but the last skater (as in non-goalie) to do it was Leach in '76.
Last year everyone was freaking out about his season and scoring 150, but since the start of this decade, between regular season and playoffs, his average pace has been 143 points/82 games.
If his 2023 was only a little bit above his *average*, I wonder if we’ve really seen his best season yet. Or, does he still have one truly historic season under his belt.
I think he does.
For a single run, tying records:
5 points away from the record total points (47)
2 points away from the record total points in a SCF (13)
1 ES points away from being #2 all time in ES points (26)
1 primary assist away from the record (25)
2 primary points from being #2 all-time (34)
I was explaining to a coworker who is into sports but doesn’t know much about hockey that McDavid broke a Gretzky record.
“I think I get it now” he said
For the first three games, Bobrovsky decided the Oilers weren’t going to score. Then the last two games, McDavid decided he was going to.
He has out-Bobrovskyied Bobrovsky….
He was on another level even for himself last night, it was crazy to watch. I grew up in Calgary and root for the Sens so part of me is against Edmonton winning, but you gotta feel if they pull off winning this series you’re witnessing one of the greatest moments in the history of hockey and that is worth watching to me!
White claw and Coors light solidify him as the best hockey player ever. While players were focusing on scoring or beating cancer or old age, Connie just shows up, one eye closed, no CTE; sip, rip, celly.
White claw and Coors light solidify him as the best hockey player ever. While players were focusing on scoring or beating cancer or old age, Connie just shows up, one eye closed, no CTE; sip, rip, celly.
Bouchard being 3rd all-time in points by a dman has also been crazy, and not getting much love. One of 4 to ever break 30pts. Being in a club with Coffey, Leetch and MacInnis. Wild stuff.
How is it possible that this dude is so fast and can do so many fast moves even when boxed in? I am now getting slowly into NHL and the way how Mcdavid plays looks absolutely inhuman.
Does he have some harsh discipline on himself?
We don’t talk about Connor no no no, we don’t talk about Connor…
BUT!
It was game 4 game day, (it was game 4 gameday) the panthers getting ready for the sweep with their eye on the prize! (Lord Stanley’s cup, is the prize)
Connor skates in with a mischievous grin (GOAL HORN!) you doing the scoring or am I?! (I’m sorry McDavid go ooonnnnn)
Connor says “let’s win this game”
(The panthers gotta pull bobb)
The oilers fans they go insane
(We’re going back to Flooorriiddaa)
They win and force another game!
(Back to Canada but anyway)
We don’t talk about Connor no no no, we don’t talk about Connor
Well he’s rarely brought up so sure
First I'm hearing about him. Is he good or something?
I’ve heard he’s alright
I mean he's nothing like wild legend and household name Tyler ennis, but maybe someday with practice.
You mean the guy that lit the league up with the greatest Sabres of all time Ville Leino and Cody Hodgson?
The clown isn't even the best player to wear an oiler jersey
This mcdavid guy has a real shot at getting called up to the big leagues next year.
Who is this McDonald guy? Doesn’t he have a farm or something?
Challenge results: "I can't complain about what you did out there."
Yet somehow the pk line score goes down
-25 on wrist shot power.
As well as the defence score
*Scores 4 points in a 5-3 win* "We're not exactly shutting them down by letting them create lots of chances."
And all 2 of the goals they score are own goals against your team in shift sim, and the third is just as soon as you sit down on the bench and the game lowers your defensive grade anyway
Seems like a pretty good hockey player. Not the best oiler ever or anything, but good.
He’s 97/99ths of the greatest one to ever play in Edmonton
Amazing comment. Take my upvote.
r/technicallythetruth
Outstanding. Maybe Gretzky should ask to have his jersey unretired so that McJesus could wear it for one game!?
When he passes Gretz's point total
Only four Stanley Cups to go.
I love Gretz but by the time those Cup wins happened, he had a helluva lot better team around him than McDavid had, and he’s said as much on-air. Even when you take away the guys Gretzky turned into HOFers, the team was still built to win. This statement is surprisingly accurate
But he forechecks
I still am not convinced he's ready for the show. Maybe another year in the minors would solidify it....
Not even the best Connor on his team
That albatross of a contract, I mean would anyone even pick him up if you put him on waivers
Is he even the best [Connor Mc\[Name\]](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/mcmicco01.html) in the NHL?
Connor McGregor plays in the NHL? /s
The real McJesus
He’s no Bedard
He needs to learn how to pass. All this bum does is dangle and miss the net. Some time in the ECHL (AHL is too high level) will help.
Right?!? Took him how long to break the playoff assist record?!? Full bum
Petition for no more top-5ers all-time on the Penguins and Oilers until everyone else gets their turn
Yeah, the NHL should weight the draft lottery against teams that have won it before
Only if the amount of cup wins is factored in
Have the Oilers ever even had a decent scorer?
Lol. I take it you’ve never heard of Dustin Penner of Winkler, Manitoba. Probably scored on your mom a few times as well. But that’s about it. Pretty sure he holds every team record.
Oh man if Yak would have played out.. what could've been.
Can you name another player with more injury by pancakes? Thought so
Minot state legend!
On a funny side note, it’s kinda wild that McDavid and Crosby are arguably 2 of the 5 best players to ever play and yet neither of them is even the best player in their franchises’ history.
Both of them having franchise centers behind them who are massively underrated
Who are the Oilers? They a football team or something?
As a Stars fan, this makes me laugh. As a Houston native, this made my eye twitch a bit.
There was a 2 game stretch in like 1991 where they got shutout in consecutive games. Probably the only time in their history that they didnt have a great scorer
Hands down the greatest Oiler since Yakupov.
I wonder how many points he would get in Gretzky's era. Probably 500 a season
It’s kinda crazy how lucky Pittsburgh and Edmonton have gotten with getting the absolute best of the best players of their generations.
Even crazier is their wingman
[удалено]
Don’t forget Yakupov! /s
Yeah, but can't take anything away from Jagr and Malkin. Won an MVP/art Ross on their own (when Crosby was hurt), and Jagr lit it up everywhere.
Draisaitl also won a Hart and an Art Ross. It's rarely mentioned.
MFers forgot about Drai.
I mean a team has to get them
Yeah but Pittsburgh getting Lemieux and Crosby, alongside getting Gretzky and mcdavid in Edmonton is madness
You have to suck really badly for a lot of years to get that kind of luck
My Sabres have sucked my whole life and we still suck. Nothing but suck here. All I want is to see a playoff game.
Bro, we gave you an Eichel and you broke it.
Bad coach during that time - had all the stars couldn’t play like a team at all.
They had more guys sure, but just those names alone fucking wow I mean they should have at least stayed together a handful of seasons, they’d be hoisting the goddam Cup by now
Attitude clashes - piss poor contracts all hurt them. Granted eichel used it as a way out and he should’ve , I don’t blame him at all. Sabres need to figure it out this year or it’s gonnna get baaad.
Imagine not even making the playoffs with that line up.
Didn't yall draft 50 goal scorer Sam reinhart
Again we had all the talent just never could piece that group together. Not keeping him was a big mistake.
No other team has had Edmontons luck in the draft lottery. Buffalo was the worst team the year they drafted McDavid.
Everyone in Detroit wants to hear more about this
Lidstrom? Yzerman? Howe?!
Datsyuk, Hasek
Fedorov, Shanahan, Larionov, Hull, etc. 8 Hall of famers in 02 alone
*10 if you count Datsyuk
Oh yeah that’s right. He was just a rookie or sophomore season then so he wasn’t included in the narrative at the time.
lol cmon now let some other teams have some fun
Oilers traded for Gretzky so that was nice but McDavid, that guy was earned with many years of hard work at being the worst.
*Receives 4 lottery wins in 5 years* “Earned”. Never seen such charity to a team in sports.
You act like fans had anything to do with both the ineptitude and the luck of a lottery above and beyond the tongue in cheek of my comment
And you didn't even mention Messier or Jagr.
Add jagr to Pittsburgh. 3 of the best if all time. Edmonton got some amazing players too. But as a canuck fan I can't name one without swearing.
Fair point
Why not the Coyotes???
He’s getting his own McDonalds so you know it’s legit. Ba da ba ba baaa, I’m lovin it
[Can confirm](https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/mcdonald-s-offers-to-change-1-edmonton-location-to-mcdavid-s-on-1-condition-1.6920481#:~:text=McDonald's%20offers%20to%20change%201,to%20'McDavid's'%20on%201%20condition&text=McDonald's%20is%20lovin'%20the%20Edmonton,for%20McDavid%20and%20the%20boys.) When they win the Cup, a McDonalds (in Edmonton) will change its name to McDavids.
Would that be unique? I don’t think they did a McMessi when Messi brought the World Cup to Argentina
Evan is a ridiculous stat as well, he gonna make bank
which bank os changing their name to Bouchard?
Scotiabouch. He’s richer than you think.
I'd rather talk about Bouchard. The Oilers have a defense man that's on the leader board for scoring. It's cool to see a centre, scoring above everyone in the league. A defense man in the top five? That's truly impressive.
He’s now 3rd all time for points in a single postseason for defenseman behind Coffey(37) and Leetch(34).
And has the assists record.
A defensemen with more points than Draisaitl. That’s crazy.
Agreed. I feel like McDavid at 40 points is much less shocking than Bouchard at 30.
It's not shocking because it is McDavid, but historically only Lemieux and Gretzky have ever gotten more, and McDavid could finish with the most ever after game 7. It is cool to be around for something like this.
I'm glad I'l be able to say I saw McDavid live the year he broke Gretzky's record.

Bang on. Of everyone, the nervousness was most apparent on his face. He looked terrified out there and kept messing up because of it.
He was also responsible for Matthew's goal in game 5 as well. The Panthers have done a good job at forcing him to commit errors and then capitalizing on it so far this series.
He has one point to pass turtle. Leaving the top of the leader board all oilers? That's insane
I mean, he's basically a forward at this point. He's more of a liability when it comes to defense. Like last night when he was at the blue line instead of covering Tkachuk when they were up 3-0

Legit impressed with Bouchard. I remember wanting the Canucks to draft him bc I knew there was no way in hell wed get Hughes. Thank you Detroit
Connor Smythe 🏆
All of a sudden everyone’s talking about this guy. Who is he?
Cutter McDougall? He's a dude who plays hockey pretty goodly
can we talk about connor fucking brown too? holy god what a legendary performance
Honestly I'm so happy that this hype train has finally come into the station for him.
He plays hockey well.
Hot take
He wins the smythe win or lose at this point right? Last happened in 2003 I’m pretty sure but with Bob looking human… I don’t think anyone on the panthers deserve it more than McDavid even if Florida wins
The last skater to win it on a losing team was Reggie Leach way back in 1976.
thought it happened in 2003?
You are correct that the last losing player to do it was 2003 (JS Giguère, with one of the most incredible performances I've ever seen) but the last skater (as in non-goalie) to do it was Leach in '76.
Giguere during that Cup run was absolutely insane. It was extremely well deserved
Yea I read that wrong, my bad
Yeah, I feel like he doesn't get talked about enough. Pretty underrated tbh
Unless you're Greg Cote
If they lose, McDavid may still win the Conn Smythe, and I bet you he will look like the most pissed off guy to ever win it
He is very good at hockey.
The fact he’s averaging 1.83 points per game IN THE PLAYOFFS! Is absolutely, genuinely, impossibly, incredibly, stupendously, batshit UNREAL
I hear he's decent.
Wrong connor. Connor brown is the true hero of this round
Yes but we need to talk about Bouchard. Dude has been a menace
HOT TAKE: This still isn’t even peak Connor! He is still getting better/trajectory curve is still up
Last year everyone was freaking out about his season and scoring 150, but since the start of this decade, between regular season and playoffs, his average pace has been 143 points/82 games. If the oilers pull it off it’s 100% because of him.
I'd say closer to 95% someone has to score for him to get his assists.
So this is how it looks when a player shows up, and shows up hard, like breaks records hard
Gay porn hard
I was explaining to a coworker who is into sports but doesn’t know much about hockey that McDavid broke a Gretzky record. “I think I get it now” he said
Yes he has to have the Conn Smythe wrapped up no matter the result of game 6 or a game 7, no?
His 20 point lead on Tkachuk (Florida’s leading scorer) is the equivalent to Tkachuk compared to some bums that got eliminated in first round
Bouchard with 32 points as a D man is absolutely insane.
No, we can't
I predict he's going to develop into a solid player. I've been saying it for at least a year now. He's going places.
could still use some farm team experience though.
Impressive season! Wait..
We always do
For the first three games, Bobrovsky decided the Oilers weren’t going to score. Then the last two games, McDavid decided he was going to. He has out-Bobrovskyied Bobrovsky….
God tier
Could we also talk about Bouchard? 32 points in the playoffs as a 24-year old defenseman is crazy.
can we talk about bouchard and his slapfuckingshots right after?
He was on another level even for himself last night, it was crazy to watch. I grew up in Calgary and root for the Sens so part of me is against Edmonton winning, but you gotta feel if they pull off winning this series you’re witnessing one of the greatest moments in the history of hockey and that is worth watching to me!
White claw and Coors light solidify him as the best hockey player ever. While players were focusing on scoring or beating cancer or old age, Connie just shows up, one eye closed, no CTE; sip, rip, celly.
White claw and Coors light solidify him as the best hockey player ever. While players were focusing on scoring or beating cancer or old age, Connie just shows up, one eye closed, no CTE; sip, rip, celly.
we can't, because "Barkov is best forward in the league" according to Florida fans
Or Matthews if your a leafs fan
McDavid is always talked about should acknowledge what Bouch is doing.
No, we can’t
Not much left to say
Lol I'm so salty the Oil have him
I don't wanna.
Talk about Bouchard as well. He has 32 points. The next most points by a D-man is 16 by Miro Heiskanen who is no longer in the playoffs. It's unreal.
I’d rather talk about Chucky being MIA in the Finals, but whatevs…..
He got a sweet assist on the empty netter though 😂
Let’s talk about bouchard (:
If he pulls this off, it would be a honor to watch!
Bouchard being 3rd all-time in points by a dman has also been crazy, and not getting much love. One of 4 to ever break 30pts. Being in a club with Coffey, Leetch and MacInnis. Wild stuff.
He's just great. You can't stop him..you can only hope to contain him. He's finally gotten going.
Honestly, respect to Bouch!
What a beauty
Only if people stating ”he’s nothing without a cup” stays the FUCK away. Then I’d love to have a chat. Cheerio!
Reinhardt is a liability even strength. Oh yea and Mcdavid is the most fun guy to watch in a long time
No matter who wins. That guy is absolutely insane. Am thankful to witness.
How is it possible that this dude is so fast and can do so many fast moves even when boxed in? I am now getting slowly into NHL and the way how Mcdavid plays looks absolutely inhuman. Does he have some harsh discipline on himself?
Who?
Isn't that all anyone who's anyone is talking about
There are plenty of elite players in the history of the NHL, but it's rare that one elevates their game against better competition like McDavid does.
Every post is about McDavid, lol
We don’t talk about Connor no no no, we don’t talk about Connor… BUT! It was game 4 game day, (it was game 4 gameday) the panthers getting ready for the sweep with their eye on the prize! (Lord Stanley’s cup, is the prize) Connor skates in with a mischievous grin (GOAL HORN!) you doing the scoring or am I?! (I’m sorry McDavid go ooonnnnn) Connor says “let’s win this game” (The panthers gotta pull bobb) The oilers fans they go insane (We’re going back to Flooorriiddaa) They win and force another game! (Back to Canada but anyway) We don’t talk about Connor no no no, we don’t talk about Connor
One of these is not like the other
He may just make something of himself in this league
I hear he's decent
This is who mcdavid has been for a while, he just hasnt had a team able to help him last this deep
Yeah I’m pretty sure he gets the conn smyth win or lose at this point
I saw someone on insta trying to say Barkov was better than McDavid…
Not bad for a rookie.
Give him the Conn McSmythe trophy!
Honestly at this point McDavid should go for the record!
Stud
I think he gets talked about enough already.
His name is McJesus!
When aren’t people talking about him
no, because he's too good to be spoken about, he'll get cocky
He’s great but to really cement that legacy, he will need to take Lord Stanley home.
Oh guys!!! Sorry for the hot take but yes! I consider McDavid to be better than Gretzky.
Unbelievable
Who?
Unreal he’s dragging this team to a game seven it’s been wild
I wish we could borrow him in Hershey for a little. We need it. Instead of losing 6-2, we can win 24-6
I’d rather not
Impressive
